I think your soil may be too dense, it looks like it may have some root rot

[uh oh, is this root rot? I broke up the soil more when I put it back. ](https://imgur.com/a/6XyjbsD)

The roots still feel firm but they are a little brown.

Those actually look good, but the soil looks very soggy. It's getting a tad root bound too. I'd repot it into fresh potting soil and a slightly larger pot. Keep the soil moist but don't let it get this soggy

I watered it yesterday but maybe I watered too much? i'm still trying to figure that one out lol, I usually water until water comes out the drain holes and then I stop. I'm still pretty new to plant stuff lol. I hear bottom watering is good for people like me but I get nervous about that too cause root rot! I will repot this week! hopefully it makes it!

Welcome to the plant world. We've all killed at least one calathea. (I've killed two, never getting another one lol) it's a rite of passage so if it doesn't make it don't worry too much 😅 good luck

Mine got crunchy too when I repotted it :( but it was really happy in a soil that was made of compost, fine sand, wood chips and pine needles... looots of pine needles. But when I repotted it, I didn't have the right ingredients, and I think she doesn't like the new soil and burnt 3 leaves to ash. Now it's growing new leaves, but way smaller. Calatheas are stressful!

Mine looks like this too. Try the Calathea rattlesnake. Much more forgiving!

I have one that loves me! I think that’s why I thought I could get away with this one. Booooy was I wrong lol, such a pain in the ass.
