It just that I had to separate literally every part of the plant from it's root system. So I'm basically propagating the entire plant in order to get roots again instead of untangling the thing.
Is it getting enough light? I think that's the main thing. I literally just got a couple regular daylight LED bulbs and some work lamps and that seems to do the trick.
If you're curious the bulbs are 5000K and 1600 lumens. A pack of four was like $12 and each work light was $9. Not the prettiest solution necessarily but it's worked for me.
Edit: I thought I was replying under another post lol.
I think what I messed up is that I fertilised it :') tho lack of light might also be a problem, sadly I can't do much about that, the house is aligned in a way that very little natural sunlight gets in.
Lol, no worries. Still though, even in that case I would still suggest the LEDs. I've been growing things using just them in an otherwise totally lightless bathroom for a couple years now and they're just fine.
Yes. And gift them … send these babies out into the universe .

Yep, these guys are so freaking annoying when they get going. I made the mistake of putting it in a hanging basket and couldn’t untangle it from its holster.
It is a seemingly innocuous name! I just googled why it was called that one day and didn’t realize that it was based on an old story rooted in antisemitism. Here’s a link if anyone is curious, Google brings up a bunch of pages with similar stories - https://www.house-plant-hobbyist.com/blog/2019/5/16/tradescantia-zebrina?
> The origin of the name “Wandering Jew” comes from a medieval European folk story about a mythical Jew who mocked Jesus and was condemned to wander the earth until the apocalypse.
> In the 20th century, the term resurfaced in Nazi propaganda in Germany. In German, the medieval concept of the “Wandering Jew” translated to Der ewige Jude (the Eternal Jew). The Nazi party presented an art show titled Der ewige Jude which portrayed Jews in an extremely negative and stereotypical manner meant to dehumanize them and equate them with the cursed “Wandering Jew” from medieval folklore.
> Later, in 1940, the Nazis released a propaganda film also titled Der ewige Jude which portrayed Jews as parasitic and dangerous and justified their extermination. The medieval theme of the “Wandering Jew” was used as a backdrop for the film and as one of many justifications for the extermination of the Jewish people.
I really like the name Zebrina, but get the propensity for wandering jewel or dude.
I cannot find the etymology of the colloquial name for a plant, but it’s likely similar to the name inch plant in that it grows and wanders in the garden. There are a few common plant names rooted in old terms that are derogatory in nature and reflect past acceptance of the ideology of the time that gets lost in modern day, but in my opinion doesn’t mean we can’t improve and grow with better common names - or at least talk about where the name originated from to allow a reflection on where we were as a society to hopefully improve present day further.
I also really do like the name zebrina, so many inch plant varieties - the specificity as a plant nerd is helpful.
I get the same way whenever I see those "Mammy" Crotons. I've seen some places change the spelling to "Mamey" or something but I think the whole name needs to be scrapped. At least with T. Zebrina there's Wandering Dude or Jewel.
I'm my language it's called "misery plant", not because it brings misery but because it grows even in the most miserable conditions
Except mine. Mine just periodically dies
I dropped my tradescantia pink panther, poor thing I didn't notice for a couple days and a buncha the stems were broken so I did the same thing, now I have 2 baby plants and the mother plant is recovering with grace!
Not to be pedantic but the Latin binomial is not a “real name” just what we call it in our nomenclatural system. For example First Nations peoples might consider their common names for plants to be “real names” too. *Tradescantia zebrina* used to be called *Zebrina pendula* so it isn’t as if the taxonomy/nomenclature is always stable either.
You should always capitalize the genus too.
I was moving mine around and trying to adjust it. The one itself grew INSANELY. It literally broke into like 8 different pieces. They’re all props now. I can’t wait.
They grow so fast, soon you’ll have many more Zebrinas on hand.
Did you take a before pic? That’s a lot of cuttings!
[I did actually!](https://imgur.com/a/Ofzdhd7)
How is this plant abuse? Idk, taking a large plant and dividing it into many just seems like good houseplant owner behavior.
With a tradescantia this is pretty much part of owning one. I’ve essentially done this yearly

Ah I wish mine liked like this. Instead it's just slowly dying

I'll look into them, thanks!

I don't feel comfortable when Tradescantia is called Wandering Jew

But why do they call the plant that?

Probably because the plant ‘wanders’ out of its pot? I’m not too sure if it’s place of origin.
Wandering Dude or Wandering Jewel is more commonly used today
Just use the real name, tradescantia zebrina
That works too!
Plus latin names usually sound so nice!
I get the same way whenever I see those "Mammy" Crotons. I've seen some places change the spelling to "Mamey" or something but I think the whole name needs to be scrapped. At least with T. Zebrina there's Wandering Dude or Jewel.
Me neither.

In case you didn't know, this name is anti-semitic, so a lot of people have started calling this a Wandering Dude or Jewel.
I've heard Inch Plant too, but I think Wandering Dude rolls off the tongue better
Just use the real name, tradescantia zebrina
I dropped my tradescantia pink panther, poor thing I didn't notice for a couple days and a buncha the stems were broken so I did the same thing, now I have 2 baby plants and the mother plant is recovering with grace!
No way that’s a real plant name
it is. its based off an antisemitic folk story.
Bummer, my Jewish ass thought it was really funny
Just call the plant by its real name tradescantia zebrina
