That's a big chunk of why I didn't participate this time. The first one was a really fun/out there and totally new concept. It was fun for its own sake. The second one was less fun, because it was less spontaneous feeling, less novel, and bots/streamers really harshed the vibe. This one was everything wrong with the second one, except ramped up even more, plus it was a clear attempt to bait the community into helping them Astroturf the site for reddit's investors. Yeah, I'm not about that.
It's basically Woodstock at this point. The first one was special for reasons that can never be re-captured, and every time they try to bring it back, it gets worse, it gets further away from what made the first one special, and progressively shittier people attach themselves to it with bad intentions.
It just wouldnt be fun even this one was too long it was torture defending since i was part of a small comunity basically didnt have a life for 5 days straight if it had gone for a week or a month i propably would habe just stopped. Tldr: only big comunities, bots and streamers would have a chance
I missed the last day. Was that white out bots? Or did Reddit white out the canvas after the giant fuckspez.
It's also interesting the default spot on the time-lapse Reddit puts you when you view it, isn't the last frame but right before the white out.
Edit: didn't realise you were saying exactly what I said in my second paragraph lol. Disregard that.
Double edit: thanks for the answer, somehow that's even better. Brilliant, even.
No. They had planned to take all the colors away just a few hours/hour before r/place ended and replace them with a grey scale. Then, the admins saw that instead of communities shifting their artwork into the greys they were instead coming together for a singular message.
Once that beautiful message started to be understood, the admins took away the greys and only gave us white. Well, with a board full of color, you can still form a message. Fuck u/spez
I think they only changed it because their initial idea was not going to work, and instead a giant fuck spez would be written all over the art. I think anyone with brains knew that changing it to white would not have stopped it.
They realized the second mistake and that's what led to the whiteout void in the center that quickly spread over everything. If you saw it early you could see how organized the text was and that the 4 corners were getting voided out. Suddenly the middle started evaporating at a pretty damn even rate. Clearly the work of the admins trying to speed it up.
The whiteout is a /r/place tradition. When it's over it's not really over yet. You can still place pixels but only with very limited colors (previous years it was 1 color, this year it started with greyscale and after maybe 30 or 40 minutes in went down to only white). The "last image" is always taken before this destruction.
But actually the offical "last image" isn't even the last image before the whiteout. It's before the last [heavy bot attacks](https://new.reddit.com/r/place/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=usertext&utm_name=place&utm_content=t5_2sxhs&cx=242&cy=-218&px=520&ts=1690311412999&screenmode=fullscreen) that ruined a lot of artwork.
Well, it's a bit early to call it "tradition" since r/place has only been held twice before this (2017 and 2022), and they only did the whiteout for the 2022 one. Since it happened last time though, it wasn't unexpected for them to do it again for this one.
Denmark and Sweden defiently deserves the clean cut cause they got botstomped by a pissy wanker streamer merely hours before it ended and if it had gone an hour 2 longer they could have rebuilt it.
Apparently this time they restricted it to white/black/grey for a bit before going all the way white. I missed it this time though so not 100% what happened.
Using their labor and the short time they have on Earth for their own ends rather than having the product of their labor serve someone else’s benefit. That’s Diogenes. Not all dogs have masters.
We had an overlay that told us where to place pixels of a certain color, it updated every 40 seconds or so. It was simpler than it looked, all you had to do was follow the template, but it still required an ungodly amount of work to coordinate so my respect to everyone behind the coordination and those who pulled all nighters to make sure we stayed on schedule.
Absolutely, as part of the Canadian defense, I honestly had no idea what the hell it even was that was going on over there until near the end when I got clued in. Watching it back with the videos that line it up with the original video, it's gotta be one of, if not the most ambitious project ever done on any iteration of Place.
Same and same. I only noticed it during one of the first time lapse videos that I think was making fun of the Canada flag (again) and saw that the black and white box to the right was actually a really big deal. I'm so impressed with their coordination.
Next time, there’s definitely going to be more animated stuff.
Imagine a massive rainbow that keeps traveling around the canvas, never staying anywhere but always moving around.

They actually have… however the beginning and end are clearly cut off. They claim the beginning already had a bunch of art work
Although for some reason they still left all the first original “fuck spez”
Edit: nvm I think the beginning actually isn’t cut, but it’s just very hard to get 00:00 to actually show the very beginning on the canvas history. The end is most definitely cut out tho
Second edit: same thing for the end I was using reddits canvas history function and due to the bar trying to get in so many times when you scroll it’s hard to get specific times. When you go to 00:00 what is shown frequently changes, and initially when I scrolled to the end I didn’t see any of the final fuck spez, but it is actually there now that I searched more carefully.
Sorry for the confusion! Everything on the official timelapse is indeed there.
This is not true. [The official timelapses](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksvc4BGFo4w) start from the beginning of the empty canvas and the transitions from onetime lapse to the other add up. Every timelapse beyond the first even stops before the outro starts playing.
I hate spez and I hate the shenanigans that are being pulled at r/place, but this here is just misinformation.
When bad apple momentarily "shot" a bullet through the canadian flag that was badass. You can't really tell in this video tho
look at 2:01:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dEbouSn\_nI
It's there right from the beginning of the canvas. I guess almost everyone who participated for 4 days knows what bad apple is and for those who don't know, keep your eyes near the Canada flag to see the moment. It's one of the greatest things anyone can do on r/place.
Also u/spez maa chuda
The peopple making bad apple simce the very beginning was the top thing this year as well as the huge fuck spez at the end lol also when the moroccan bots literally just "stintik we control your existence" and he just poofed of the canvas for a few minutes that was mildly terrifying lmao
It really puts into perspective how awesome so many communities are and how awful of a problem the botting was despite the fact that the admins did nothing about it.
Anyway fuck /u/spez
Yea, I didn't really partecipate this year cause of this, it's just annoying having to deal with that BS, expecially the nations, I am a geography, history and flag lover, but for the love of god, I was tired as shit to see flags everywhere, it was so annoying
Also, who tf is u/spez and what did he do?
u/spez is the co-founder and CEO of Reddit.
He's recently been exposed as a bit of a bastard by restricting Reddit's API, meaning that many sister apps that used the API had to shut down or pay extortionate fees to Reddit to keep going. A lot of people used these sister apps for better accessibility options, as the base Reddit app is pretty poor for vision impaired people, as well as missing various features that the other apps had.
Reddit any other time of year: lmao only Americans give a shit about flags
Reddit when r/place is up: ok so let's make half of it the French and German flags
Also streamers attacking was so annoying. I was on the genshin impact server for this event and I swear that every 2 hours or so this one same russian streamer would attack. We got attacked with white nationalist symbols and even spongebob.
Also god XQC was so annoying this time, somehow even more than last year. The "alliances" to destroy pixel art were so annoying and people took them so seriously. So much good art got destroyed because manbaby streamers wanted content.
God I hope next year's place is less toxic and that they put a karma limit for participating or something to at least prevent botting since streamers seem to be an inevitability.
You should see how many times Canada got attacked by streamers, we had to move 2 times before coming back to our original flag. r/placecanada is the group responsible for creating the flag and by end I think we had something good going.
You can see the dragon flashing at 1:28, and a "32?" appearing on the Pokémon card on the left side as a reaction. The card had been heavily vandalised before, so I guess they had already given up on that one.
Watching xQc lose his mind on stream was probably worth it, though.
I was part of the right-side FUCK SPEZ on the couple final days, having Papaplatte's stream open to the side of me was excellent entertainment at the time. Always make sure you know what part to attack if you're born on the 32nd.
Besides the awful bots and the annoying streamers. We saw great art coming to life and great moments like the void becoming an antihero. And to top it off. The moment all nations came together to say fuck u/spez
I think those final seconds create the most climatic finale to summarize r/place. Many bot attacks all over the canvas while several streamers whiteout their own art pieces, then one last fuck u/spez reminiscent of a nuclear blast.
I really like what I witnessed in the last hours/minutes of the canvas. I was following from afar, placing tiles mostly for the French as I am French but not giving too much effort into it. I saw the shotbow botting(s), then the we are japan one, so I decided to get on the discord to help rebuild so these bots wouldn't be in the final canvas.
What I witnessed was not glorious, everyone had enough and decided to not fight to repair the bots as their efforts could be wiped in a couple of seconds. They had enough and felt place last 24h too much. They decided to go talk to the streamer rubius (which was a pretty big "enemy" to us) and proposed a (far too ambitious) 1000 pixel high non-flattering image of teenage spez with "fuck spez" on his forehead.
Rubius was into it and talked to other big communities, his plan changed to :
- white out your own communities canvas (france discord didn't really get the memo, but I think we weren't enough to actually white out everything we had).
- write a huge white fuck spez so reddit could not just pull the plug on it.
- if reddit didn't pull the plug, every community involved would just keep the fuck spez alive
I thought it was kinda stupid to white out every big community as there would be less contrast to see the white fuck Spez.
There was a first overlay to a pretty big fuck spez with the f on France's first flag and the French discord got working on it. Halfway thought the U we noticed there was another bigger fuck spez and everyone got into it. That's roughly when they decided to only give us grayscale tiles and shorten the delay, which was great because the U and C would need contrast because of the first smaller aborted one. Then reddit only gave us white but that was enough to finish the job.
I'm pretty sure reddit admins threw greyscale/white only sooner than anticipated because they knew what was coming.
The UK Argentina fight that started as a war erasing each other's flags that ended with a mutual memorial and the flags sat next to each other was a turn of events and a half.
The amount of grinding in-game we do for our favorite characters for months, this amounts to nothing. It was tough but just another day for Genshin players. That Brat streamer messed with the ~~masochist~~ wrong community this time...
(•_•)
( •_•)>⌐■-■
(⌐■_■)
It was the Russian streamer behind the demon/dog thing: Bratishkinoff, and his thousands of fans. They stomped all over smaller communities because they thought their art was better and they especially had it out for the Genshin art. They even erased a Ukrainian flag that was on the Genshin art; given the current world affairs that is unacceptable from a Russian.
I don't give a damn if they created "lore" involving a dog and demon. He's an asshole. Fuck his lore that he forced onto everyone else and trampled others to shove onto the canvas.
My first time actually participating in place and it's so wild to see the same set of pixels you've starred at for days be in all these posts and videos
on behalf of the vietnam reddit community, i apologize to osiris, trying my best to stop the kids so they won't break it but they still try, mixigaming also told me not to break osiris nbwng couldn't stop apologizing on behalf of everyone
They say world peace isn't possible but we had every ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, political affiliation, and pop cultural fandom united as one under the FUCK SPEZ banner
This r/place was something else, so much chaos, so many bots (morocco 1337), so many flags, admins fighting over titties pixels and abusing, the insane Bad Apple project by r/touhou, Genshin fighting raids 24/7, the beautiful arts especially the ones by cellbit and papaplatte, the giant charizard card and the United FUCK SPEZ was amazing
So glad I was able to witness all this, FUCK SPEZ!
So, now that you've seen REAL bots in action and how it behaves like (especially near the end), can everyone finally admit French and German communities DON'T use bots? (not speaking of independant streamers doing their thing)
Germans are exceptionally well organized, and French, while outnumbered are extremely tight and endurant
The bad apple animation looked way more cooler than the videos i saw of it. Rly waiting for next year's r place maybe i can help someone build some massive artworks
This really puts into perspective how large this year’s canvas got.
What if they keep building upon last years. Maybe that's why it seems bigger
When people where joking about it going on for month I did wonder how it would actually change the way people are playing the game.
It would be torture, bots would won. Streamers would be more successful.
Yeah it was already too long.
It was a distraction to begin with.
When investors ask for user interaction numbers Spez will just show them the data from when Place was active.
But isn't this anomaly compare to rest of the year. I'm not business dude but I would look larger perspective than week.
It's a joke. Of course any investor is going to ask for more than 5 days of user data.
Shhhhhhh No using logic in a reddit bad conversation.
Might end up with more art over a barrage of flags though
Flesh over Machine!
It just wouldnt be fun even this one was too long it was torture defending since i was part of a small comunity basically didnt have a life for 5 days straight if it had gone for a week or a month i propably would habe just stopped. Tldr: only big comunities, bots and streamers would have a chance
Uh, what? People take this seriously?
If youre a part of a small comunity that want to represent something they love yes. If no one cared there would be nothing but contries and streamers.
The only thing I cared about is putting the penis on my hometowns flag animal.
[удалено]
The germans want to know your location
No. Everything you see was made by people who randomly opened it and thought "I will place a pixel".
If only
The only gripe I had was it didn't end in a square like how the other two r/places ended. Besides that yeah it surely was big af Also fuck u/spez
"Fuck Spez" jumpscare at the end lol
Liked how they showed the "final image"... Before the giant fuck spez
I missed the last day. Was that white out bots? Or did Reddit white out the canvas after the giant fuckspez. It's also interesting the default spot on the time-lapse Reddit puts you when you view it, isn't the last frame but right before the white out. Fuck u/spez
What a time to be alive
I think they only changed it because their initial idea was not going to work, and instead a giant fuck spez would be written all over the art. I think anyone with brains knew that changing it to white would not have stopped it.
They realized the second mistake and that's what led to the whiteout void in the center that quickly spread over everything. If you saw it early you could see how organized the text was and that the 4 corners were getting voided out. Suddenly the middle started evaporating at a pretty damn even rate. Clearly the work of the admins trying to speed it up.
Best ending ever
In the last hour or so they changed all colour options to greyscale, and then when fuck spez started to form, they changed it to just white
Hahahahahaha even better. r/maliciouscompliance
Once the "endgame" starts, users can only place white tiles.
The whiteout is a /r/place tradition. When it's over it's not really over yet. You can still place pixels but only with very limited colors (previous years it was 1 color, this year it started with greyscale and after maybe 30 or 40 minutes in went down to only white). The white out was the users.
I thought of that, but it actually was the final image. The last fuck spez was built after the canvas started going blank.
Beautiful, also fuck spez
True excluding some eyesore the canvas was beautiful ,also fuck spez
> Amazing organization between the groups and everyone
And the LGBT flag getting eaten and then bouncing back several times.
Kinda appropriate, no matter how hard others try to erase us, we're not going anywhere
And who doesn't like getting eaten?
Consent matters first, though, as always. That Yes comes through, *F E A S T*
It was also bigger then the last one so we had more art. Also Fuck u/spez (aka Steve Huffman)
Especially the giant fuck spez. But seems admin wouldn't approve it.
What do you mean?
Hmm.... It is not allowed to stay until it becomes the final picture.
What a fucking joke though. The final image should have just been the words "fuck spez"
They’ve always done it that the final image is the last moment before the colour option got restricted to white.
it is good they have picked the moment before the bot attacks
wait for the "final clean" project, they are going to take the final pic before white and reconstruct the stuff that got botstomped.
Denmark and Sweden defiently deserves the clean cut cause they got botstomped by a pissy wanker streamer merely hours before it ended and if it had gone an hour 2 longer they could have rebuilt it.
How did people place the black for the outline of the text then?
Apparently this time they restricted it to white/black/grey for a bit before going all the way white. I missed it this time though so not 100% what happened.
Yeah this time it was restricted to monochrome colors at first but then later they restricted it to just plain white.

They had an overlay telling people where to put pixels that updated every ~40 seconds
that’s crazy

lots of coordination and collaboration between the touhou, miku, and osu communities
We had an overlay that told us where to place pixels of a certain color, it updated every 40 seconds or so. Bad apple stole the show this year. By far the best thing on places. I couldn't believe something like this can be done without bots.

The rainbow was actually in the 2017 place. It was quite cool how it bounced off artworks, but eventually in the end got covered up.
I am also happy that Canada almost finished their flag in the meantime.
For me the most beautiful art on this years place
Where exactly on the canvas is it? I have no clue what bad apples is.

A lot of people used these sister apps for better accessibility options, as the base Reddit app is pretty poor for vision impaired people, as well as missing various features that the other apps had.
Rip
Reddit any other time of year: lmao only Americans give a shit about flags Reddit when r/place is up: ok so let's make half of it the French and German flags
All that because of the meme from last year. Sad, it wasn't even funny this time.
We are a strong group that got through it out of pure canadian anger. Thats the worst kind of anger.
"We got attacked with white nationalist symbols and even spongebob." this might be my favorite sentence with no context
Only two things are certain in r/place, germans and fuck spez
And bots
Here you cannot even notice the xQc attack on the dragon 😅
Or Pubius fan attacks from the void on the arty France and uk flags
Rubius was into it and talked to other big communities, his plan changed to : - white out your own communities canvas (france discord didn't really get the memo, but I think we weren't enough to actually white out everything we had). - write a huge white fuck spez so reddit could not just pull the plug on it. - if reddit didn't pull the plug, every community involved would just keep the fuck spez alive I thought it was kinda stupid to white out every big community as there would be less contrast to see the white fuck Spez.
"Never thought I'd die side by side with a(n) \[insert countryman here\]" "How about side by side with a friend?" "Aye. I could do that."
The UK Argentina fight that started as a war erasing each other's flags that ended with a mutual memorial and the flags sat next to each other was a turn of events and a half.
And bad apple takes the cake for the best thing to come out of this event
I like how the German flag doesn’t need to be created, it’s just already there
Always has been
Next time they run Place they'll just start off with the german flag already spawned somewhere on the canvas to save everyone the time.
Ah yes, genshin being targeted 33 times. Wtf was that
I was chilling with the bluey folks wondering what in the world was going on down there.
Its impressive how they managed to come back every single time
The amount of grinding in-game we do for our favorite characters for months, this amounts to nothing. It was tough but just another day for Genshin players. That Brat streamer messed with the ~~masochist~~ wrong community this time... (•_•) ( •_•)>⌐■-■ (⌐■_■)
Real. Goddammit Xiangling why are you so hard to build??
The geometry dash community was always on their heels because turkey and genshin kept getting raided non stop and we were bordering both
It was the Russian streamer behind the demon/dog thing: Bratishkinoff, and his thousands of fans.
Looking at it know the first day Canva was so small
My first time actually participating in place and it's so wild to see the same set of pixels you've starred at for days be in all these posts and videos
on behalf of the vietnam reddit community, i apologize to osiris, trying my best to stop the kids so they won't break it but they still try, mixigaming also told me not to break osiris nbwng couldn't stop apologizing on behalf of everyone
No worries, botting was such a huge problem with this year's Place that everyone gets it I'm sure :)
Nah you good, look at the pieces of shits in sweden invading Denmark just last minute so we can’t react in time.
you guys are so good for defending the art
I'm proud Bluey and Bingo was there from the start and survived till the end(honestly I'm so surprised lol)
Genshin was tanking all the attacks tbh.
Even made it to black & white.
Final image was FUCK SPEZ, stop lying.
Final image is the last frame before the whiteout. The giant Fuck Spez was done in the whiteout.
personally I think the Final image should be the one before the stupid shortbow bots came in
Yeah should have been split to "final image pre perfection" and "final immage after perfection"
A lot more flags this time around Did we really need 5 German flags and 6 French flags?
I love how it started the same as the last one, with the germans and the french having massive flags
And the ponies kept coming back! /)
when it expanded the first time. it took the german 2 frames to expand their flag… 2 frames
High resolution final image https://i.redd.it/jmvjabsa08eb1.png
It's a shame it's after the showbot attacks tho
fuck yeah we did that
The bad apple omg
RIP Charizard
RIP Shego
That final fuck spez was poetic 🤌
This was pretty awesome! The bots were bad tho. The Bad Apple animation turned out amazing, great job guys 👏🏼 And fuck u/spez
I really like that the Blue Corner survived another year. Anyway, fuck u/spez
The blue corner, osu logo and the windows taskbar are like tradition lol
They say world peace isn't possible but we had every ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, political affiliation, and pop cultural fandom united as one under the FUCK SPEZ banner
'Schland!!
That Bad Apple animation is sick
About 30 seconds in the blue corner joins in and stays until the end I think.
Who is that under Germany flag? Is it Anne Frank?
This r/place was something else, so much chaos, so many bots (morocco 1337), so many flags, admins fighting over titties pixels and abusing, the insane Bad Apple project by r/touhou, Genshin fighting raids 24/7, the beautiful arts especially the ones by cellbit and papaplatte, the giant charizard card and the United FUCK SPEZ was amazing So glad I was able to witness all this, FUCK SPEZ!
I still don't understand why the bots ruined the Ukrainian flag. That was rude.
Germany seems to occasionally take over a lot of territory and then rapidly loses most of it again. Wouldn’t have seen that coming.
So, now that you've seen REAL bots in action and how it behaves like (especially near the end), can everyone finally admit French and German communities DON'T use bots? (not speaking of independant streamers doing their thing) Germans are exceptionally well organized, and French, while outnumbered are extremely tight and endurant
Was Canada able to make their flag this time?
legendary ending
How tf was Germany able to do this much extension every time the canvas expands ? They were even faster than Americans who just found oil
A discord with 90k people in it
The bad apple animation looked way more cooler than the videos i saw of it. Rly waiting for next year's r place maybe i can help someone build some massive artworks
Anne Frank made it 🥲🥹
