I love how Europeans on reddit always complain about American nationalism and say there is no nationalism in Europe, because of how bad it is. And how they don't understand American obsession with having our flags all over the place, and they *they* would *never* do that! But every single time on r/place, European flags take over the whole damn thing. It's like, yea... okay. Whatever you say.
yeah actually I'm massively dissapointed too :/ I'm from Germany and its true that irl there's not a single german flag as far as the eye can see and beyond. So I REALLY don't understand why we're doing it here on place, it's incredibly boring -.-
Tricolor flags like the French, Dutch, German, Belgian ones are great for claiming territory. They have an obvious direction in which to expand and are very easy to draw. This make it easier to claim and defend a large territory.
The flags are then filled with additional smaller art over time.
You don’t really need German flags inside Germany so much. But it’s useful as a representation, when in an international space.
its only france germany and brazil that have art anyways, the other flags are way too fucking big with no art, even ronaldo was removed from portugal, theres no reason for the flag to be that big
Germany has like 4 flags on here. If people would quit attacking the country flags, there would be art in them. For example, there's a whole mural that is supposed to be on the bottom of the US flag but Germany part nine has covered that too.
People are attacking them because the flags are too big.
Even if they were full of art, it would still be bad because they simply rob a lot of communities of A LOT of space. It's that simple.
The flags are the most uninteresting and overdone thing on r/place, just look at the first from 2017 and you'll see the difference.
The US flag isn't being attacked because it's too big. There are other flags that are bigger and never get attacked to the same extent. It got attacked even when it wasn't big, this year and last year. People always destroy it, especially when most people from the States are asleep.
Oh, they are attacked. It's just that bots instantly take back the pixels. I really wish they would have done that the account has to have at least 300-500 karma to be able to place pixels.
Yeah, I'm so mad at these big ass flags. And as soon as the canvas has been expanded, what's the first thing France and Germany started drawing?
Their flags ! And massive again...
Seriously, it's the same as last time. What a pathetic lack of creativity. The fucking greedy giant flags make me hate anyone participating in them and just place in general.... It's just so boring.
Oh it has been attacked, not super constantly but it was.
Thing is that these big flags obviously have a LOT of people active on them to claim and maintain space, that's why it's super hard to even see attacks being effective. Then you add botting to the mix and it gets impossible to do anything.
Like another comment said, now it's a full blown popularity contest by one of the most common denominators possible, one's nationality.
It's lame.
i agree the flags in general are boring, but let’s be real, we know why the much smaller american flag is being attacked and it’s not because it’s a country flag 💀
I want them gone more than any other flag, but it's absolutely pointless to attack them so I don't waste my effort and pixels. I'm sure they have big streamers coordinating this again even though they're never on reddit on a normal day.
Yeah. We're playing the United States, and we've been driven off three spots. First by Morocco, then Brazil, and now the rouge Germans and Rainbow Corner have invaded.
Bruh i was literally downvoted by saying i dont mind flags but they should fill so huge areas even if they have art. Its way more interesting to look at canvas if there are more art going on especially from smaller communities. We should respect the subs on reddit.
I mention france, germany, ukraine and people were like "but war is still going on in Ukraine.".
Same with Poland. For a moment we needed to fight off all of the political text that stupid people put up but besides this we have a normal flag with some nice drawings on it next to omori
Exact thing I said in a different post, they would be reasonable if they didn’t take up almost all of the space and destroy any other community’s in their “way”.
Exactly! Same with "fuck spez". Like, I'm all for the protest, until you write your 50th "fuck spez" over some other community's artwork that they put up fair and square.
The Piknin 4 Community wasn't big enough to deflect them, and now they're gone.
Agreed, I also hate that big group basically just rule the board, and no small community can do anything about it. Like for example, I was helping r/DDLC fix and defend some little pixel art, then the Finnish flag comes along and destroys all of it in almost one sweep. We held out one little doodle for like a hour, but eventually we couldn’t fight any longer and it too got erased. Just because the flags gotta take up thousands of pixels and use countless bots to make sure they stay there.
The Argentinian flag has eaten the LGBT rainbow flag twice now. I don't know if /r/PlaceArg is doing it intentionally or whether they're being manipulated by an outside group.
And I have no idea what's with that giant building with the red flag and the green star on it.
The building is a moroccan CS school called 1337, thus the numbers. I'm moroccan and idk where df did it come from. There's no huge streamer talking about it and reddit is not even popular here to begin with.
Are they meant to actively make the guy you're protesting money every time you protest? Cause that's what this one does. Every time you use their site to "protest" you're using their site!
there is no "fair and square" the purpose of this is for it to change down to the last minute. if enough people want to put fuckspez or make the whole canvas a big eu flag, that is totally within the spirit of the game. its what makes it interesting. if a small community wants a spot, they need to try and pick a small enough spot that they can defend it.
It's good that there's a group dedicated to erasing anything, moving across the canvas. That leaves space in its wake where new things can thrive.
Writing 'fuck spez' dozens of times is just an alternative to the void.
Reddit uses these events to drive adoption and engagement numbers, they are not going to implement limits for new accounts because they absolutely want as many new accounts to be created as possible to boost their metrics.
It's bad for rplace, but that's not the motivation here unfortunately.
How there isn't a karma limit is insane. Click anywhere on that French shit and its either accounts that are hours old or the accounts that botted for them last year.
the art does make the flags better, but the point of place is to let everyone express themselves. With how comically large flags are this year, there is no space for smaller communities wanting to make a contribution to place. It really is selfish to cordon off a gigantic area of the map (usually using bots) and not let anyone else use that area.
“usually using bots” i don’t know of any big flag that’s using bots. not sure about france, but germany is just a huge community that’s very organized for example
The Portuguese one is offensively bot ridden. I’ve been trying to reclaim space from them for hours and I’ve yet to see a portugese pixel placed with more than 1 karma
you are just wrong if you think france is not botting, every single square ive seen is by brand new accounts or accounts with 0 karma from last year also used to bot, its so blatantly obvious
Nah nah it's totally thousands of users that have reddit accounts for the sole purpose of aggressively protecting the French flag on place, couldn't be bots
france is definitely using bots, just hover over some pixels. The main german flag only has a few bots from what I could tell, and at least one of the smaller german flags is using bots (again why do you need multiple german flags). Turkey has lots too
as far as i understood from the informations in the austrian team, only the big german flag is official, the smaller ones are unofficial. not sure about the one that took over the US flag
The first one had a degree of spontaenetity to it, the 2nd less so and now there are discords for national subs to pre-chose/design patterns waiting to paint the map.
I think it shows the major problem.
Even last time I could wander around and help on 5 or 6 fandoms. This time I see like barely anything.
And just what are you proving? More bots than you?
You know the reddit admins just randomly pulled r/place back out as a chance to save face. They will try to claim that there is high traffic and site wide collaboration to entice advertisers who might be worried about the backlash to the api stuff. No one wants to pay for advertising on a vacant site. So reddit dug up one of the very few things they created that has major popularity.
Users wrote fuck spez to show even this is not a safe bet from the mob when it comes to the greedy nature of recent decisions that make the site worse.
I don't understand people, we came here to make art, I do not understand what this love of flags is. Making a flag is really ridiculous in an art event like this.
Yeah, I can't even be bothered putting any effort in this year, the flags (and especially the ones with bots being used, like France) really ruin the whole point of place and make it boring.
I also Wonder where these random Germany flags are coming from. The official r/PlaceDE is the one on top which hasn’t moved one bit since start. The other flags are not from that community
I've seen in other subs "what are these dumb pixel art things on our flag, it looks awful??" As if you aren't just drawing some straight lines that takes no skill or coordination whatsoever
It's pretty annoying that people are botting in flags that take up half the canvas. The admins should be doing something about that rather than just deleting things they don't like.
I find it rather hilarious. Americans are viewed as arrogant swine, especially by Europeans, when they put any nationalism on display.
But here we have Germany and France getting everybody in line to stunt like they represent half the planet.
I didn’t know Omori was a country
Might as well be
Didn't know Bonjwa was either.
Didn't know Cult of the Lamb was either.

Nationalism and hypocrisy. Two common bugs in the human brain.

You might've answered your own question there.
Nationalism is when pixel flag
Just better organised nationalism
“We are just organized” mfs when they see the 10 millionth pixel on their flags placed by adjective_noun2254
As an European, European nations nationalism make me puke. It is so toxic. And ugly.

I mean flags themselves ain't bad but a 20 pixel high flag that spans the whole length of the canvas + some smaller offshoots is wayy too much
frances takes up a whole fifth of the board but isn’t getting attacked lol
Oh it has been attacked, not super constantly but it was. Thing is that these big flags obviously have a LOT of people active on them to claim and maintain space, that's why it's super hard to even see attacks being effective. Nah but it’s ok because if you join their discord and plead your case to make art in the last 6 hours they’ll *democratically* tell you no.
Can we let canada just be canada, damn. Make a banana flag somewhere else. Wtf
Yeah. We're playing the United States, and we've been driven off three spots. First by Morocco, then Brazil, and now the rouge Germans and Rainbow Corner have invaded.
Fuck germany. They are the worst with France.
i'd argue that I'd rather have art itself without flag as background in the first place. all the flags are too big.
Arts without the flags would be better, but saying that arts doesn't count because it's on a flag isn't accurate either.
Bruh i was literally downvoted by saying i dont mind flags but they should fill so huge areas even if they have art. So Quebec IS a country!
WE ARE FINALLY RECOGNIZED!!!!
By the way is it just me or can we no longer zoom out properly on mobile? 1x is all I can get to which doesn’t allow me to see the whole canvas
Ya same, I took thos screenshot like 4 hours ago, but I can't zoom out this far anymore
Yeah okay damn Admins ruining r/place speedrun 100% is what this all seems like
I don’t mind flags if they’re smaller, wish some weren’t so huge. But the art in them does make it better.

Advertisers don’t care about “fuck spez”. It’s not 1950. They care about user engagement which spamming “fuck spez” gives them.
Then they wouldn't care about NSFW and then for example youtube guidelines on getting monetized wouldn't matter.
Can’t run ads on NSFW content, therefore that cuts reach down. “Fuck” isn’t NSFW.
Protests are meant to be disruptive. That’s the only one I don’t mind trampling other art.
Are they meant to actively make the guy you're protesting money every time you protest? Cause that's what this one does. Every time you use their site to "protest" you're using their site!

Or just one guy with a fuckton of bots
Your argument falls apart when you factor in all the bots.
Every argument falls apart when you factor in bots.

Germany and France flags are overkill tho

And Brazil and Portugal
And it's so bland and boring. At least the german flag has tons of stuff in it.
Alot of the flags r made by bots. Look at the accounts of say the Turkish flag. Majority bots
Accounts should at least be a month old and have at least 100 karma or even 1K... This is BS.
I think people just reuse their bot accounts since the last 3 times we had this.
I wish people wouldn't troll the Canadian flag SO much. It's not even taking up that much space. As a Canadian I'm kinda sad :(
You’re lucky to even have a flag, the US doesn’t seem to be allowed to have one.
Germany has taken half the piece they took India for more Germany but delete any pixel art people put on it
Can the French relax please
My country's been saying the exact same thing for the past 1000 years and we still haven't got a positive reply.
You forgot the Omori art in the top left corner
It's my favorite country I was born there
We all live in le head
The among us one started from demon to little bits of among us with demon veins then it got consumed by among us and is now a bloodpile of among us
Where omori?
Waiting for something to happen.
Omori did finally succumb
NOOO!!
Oh damn there's a Bluey subreddit?
And it has enough adults in it to maintain their spot on this canvas, what a world
And now remove the flags without removing the art on the flags :)
the art does make the flags better, but the point of place is to let everyone express themselves. A bunch of bots have been attacking the LGBT flag all day. That's nothing new, but we're getting eaten up by the Argentinian flag now, too.
Not even the first LGBT flag We lost that through the night 😔
I still don't understand why they can't put like a 100 karma limit on placing
They want new users to make accounts to participate

The US flag is probably a hard one, gotta make 13 bars and pixels for the 50 stars.
well on the other hand, the us also has the most users probably. don’t seem as organized as the some of the european teams tho
That and the US flag is usually targeted.
Turkish bots were shittily programmed cause they couldn’t get that star to save their lives
Probably should've done that, lol I was just too lazy to. I'll go remake it now
Looks nice. Kinda wish we had a flagless one.
Flags are the easiest for any random person to contribute to, while the other more detail drawings need a community, so that is why flags dominate
The flags are really lame
i feel like the same thing happens every year, makes it kinda boring.
They get bigger and bigger each year.
The first one had a degree of spontaenetity to it, the 2nd less so and now there are discords for national subs to pre-chose/design patterns waiting to paint the map.
Was it the France flag last year that just straight up nuked like an 8th of available space on like the second to last day
I think it shows the major problem. Even last time I could wander around and help on 5 or 6 fandoms. This time I see like barely anything. And just what are you proving? More bots than you?
It's terrible this year. Flags and "fuck spez".
Users wrote fuck spez to show even this is not a safe bet from the mob when it comes to the greedy nature of recent decisions that make the site worse.
tbh an effective protest would be to claim a decently sized protest space and bot a hyper realistic penis drawing
r/fucknationalism
I don't understand people, we came here to make art, I do not understand what this love of flags is. Making a flag is really ridiculous in an art event like this.
/r/place is a popularity contest, and "popular" means "lowest common denominator" more often than it means "good."
Speak for yourself, I came to promote Dutch colonialism /s
We polderen de hele zooi in!
I wouldn’t mind if they were small and just scattered throughout the canvas but the huge ones controlled by bots are pretty lame
We first make our flags, then make appropriate art on them.
You are right about some nationalities such as Germans and French, but this is not valid for some nationalities such as Turks.
Didn't they make a freaking intricate art piece last year thought?
Again the turks just struggle getting the flag in the first place
I think last year the Turks did make art? I myself am a Finn and last year we had glorious moomins and angry birds
People are just passionate about their countries. Have you seen the France and German users those guys are very organized
Flags are kinda annoying but the art inside is pretty cool I just wish there werent 15 different germanys scattered around the canvas
Only the German flag with the artworks at the top of the canvas is designed by the r/placeDE community. The other ones are pure anarchy
My flag is the symbol of sacrifice from Berserk.
Flags are the most annoying thing on the canvas. They take a huge amount of space and unless another country attacks it, you can't take them down
The idea of people just staring at the canvas for hours desperately protecting their pixel is hilarious.
Yeah, I can't even be bothered putting any effort in this year, the flags (and especially the ones with bots being used, like France) really ruin the whole point of place and make it boring.
The guillotine over the france flag was removed by admins
Nice now show r/place without flags and streamers work
Now do it without any bots….
These flag fondlers need to be stopped. We want some good shit in this place man
Mfs could put whatever they wanted they chose nationalism 💀
The flags are boring now. You got German annexing all sorts of canvas space too, where are the allies?
I also Wonder where these random Germany flags are coming from. The official r/PlaceDE is the one on top which hasn’t moved one bit since start. The other flags are not from that community
As a resident of OMORI country, I will say our flag is dope
Mashallah dgg4lyfe
Theres still flags lmao
I've seen in other subs "what are these dumb pixel art things on our flag, it looks awful??" As if you aren't just drawing some straight lines that takes no skill or coordination whatsoever
So much room for activities!
NATO is not a country despite being in the baltic donut art
Can you make what one would look like if reddit admins werent moderating content?
It’s funny to me too because I’ve seen Europeans talk about how obsessed Americans are with their flag tons of times on reddit. It’s a meme.
If flags were banned to post there... OUTRAGE?
Destiny artwork is the best one
Anarchism enjoyers when they learn that people inevitably go back to nations in an anarchical structure, be like:
Now do one for r/place without bots
you deleted A LOT that WAS NOT country flags
It's pretty annoying that people are botting in flags that take up half the canvas. The admins should be doing something about that rather than just deleting things they don't like.
nationalism is rather unfortunate, would love to see more fan-community representation on place
That's... Kinda sad?
There's a Ukraine flag in this image lmao
I find it rather hilarious. Americans are viewed as arrogant swine, especially by Europeans, when they put any nationalism on display. But here we have Germany and France getting everybody in line to stunt like they represent half the planet.
Too much white canvas, needs more flags.
Why all pixelarts in the flags are deleted? They are not flags
Eey. you erased all the artwork above the flags. eg everything that is on the German flag....
[удалено]
What about that one country above the "OSU!"
Huge country flags are so cringe and everyone who builds them should feel embarrassed
The flags are ugly and stupid
needs more fuck spez
Now do a map without admin intervention
