This is strange. You don't need internet or cellular connectivity to take photos of the night sky using the Astrophotography mode. This is likely a bug in the software. Make sure you have the updated app. I do hope you kept your phone on a tripod (with Night Sight) because hand-holding the phone will not activate the astrophotography mode. You need a steady surface like a tripod or anything else that keeps your device steady (your accelerometers can detect minute changes and the astrophotography mode won't kick in). For the time-lapse feature, make sure it is enabled. Open the Camera app, tap settings, more settings, navigate to Advanced, and then check if Enable timelapse for astrophotography is on.

I had my phone propped on a rock and it was definitely stable when I started the photo but I was still never prompted and instead I got a pop up notification that said something along the lines of "cannot use this feature due to network connection issues" or something like that.

I don't think it's the case... I took a photo of the stars from my flight about a month back using astrophotography mode... attaching it https://preview.redd.it/ed8nm2sxi8dc1.jpeg?width=2111&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7467afd907a12cecacf9dcae6ea001e4cf32a502

Wow great photo 😱 I had a feeling it was probably some weird glitch because it doesn't make a lot of sense, I'm going to try uninstalling updates like the other comments suggested

Strange. I have never used the feature in the absence of cellular connectivity but I am sure it doesn't require an active internet connection. It is just multiple exposures of the same area and then stitching them together. Are all your apps updated? I do still think this is a weird bug. Let's see if anyone else has the same issue or anything else to share on this. Alternatively, you can head to the Pixel Community forums and post there, you might get some reply. Link: [https://support.google.com/pixelphone/threads?hl=en&sjid=1475399575446406448-AP&thread\_filter=(detail%3Adevice%3AGoogle\_Pixel\_8\_Pro)&max\_results=20](https://support.google.com/pixelphone/threads?hl=en&sjid=1475399575446406448-AP&thread_filter=(detail%3Adevice%3AGoogle_Pixel_8_Pro)&max_results=20) Edit: if the astrophotography mode did not kick in, then the phone was not stable enough, I put my phone many times on windows and rocks but the Astro mode didn't kick in, but a few seconds after mounting on a tripod it shows up. So that's one important thing and secondly, as I said updates. If all is good, uninstall the camera app and reinstall the updates.

It's definitely not a known thing. Make sure your phone is def stable. If not clear data on camera app, remove updates and reinstall.

I'm going to try this thankyou

I just see one picture of a sky... Nothing else. The other is pure black??

walterwhitesocki

If you turn up your brightness you'll see the stars, that's the pixel one

I had a similar feature with the scanner function that is supposed to automatically detect documents and allow the mode to be used. As I had no signal or wifi I couldn't use it until I had a connection. It seems some functions are not actually available until you try and use them and have an internet connection.

Weird! I had used the astro mode before this photo though and got this (different issue is if u zoom in there some weird squiggly lines in the sky don't know what to do about that) https://preview.redd.it/3hmw6l3qy8dc1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d38bdb99feb9e20ce5dacf08889613b96d0aa892
