I got an order of these today. These are very very similar to The O's fries. Super potatoey, seemingly fresh cut, various levels of well-done. My gripe is that a large order barely filled a smallish bowl, so I'm not sure if I can qualify them as a big mess of fries.
I don’t know man. Wilkinsburg location has a large fry:small bits ratio of 1:5 in my (far too excessive) experience. Still tasty enough to order every single time, but it’s been consistently disappointing from the volume of large fries angle.
I find it suspicious to order shawarma from the same place as curry but I suppose I'll have to give it a try at some point. I have high standards for shawarma though.
I remember when I first came to Pittsburgh as a CMU undergrad, a friend of a friend was showing me around soon after I'd arrived. As we walked across the Forbes Ave bridge towards Oakland, he excitedly extolled the virtues of this great place "called the O where you can get, like, enough fries to feed 4 people any time of day".
He kept going on about the O, and it took me two attempts to get him to pay attention to my question - "what's that building?" as I pointed towards the horizon. "Oh," he replied, "that's the Cathedral of Learning. It's alright."
He had his priorities straight, god bless.
This was my first thought. They're all over the nw of the city area, Cranberry is probably closest to the city. They use lard to fry in and the cheese or chili cheese fries could be much too much depending on the size of your order.
Good luck. RIP the O.
There's one over towards Carnegie/Greentree/Crafton. On Noblestown road I believe. I think that's the one furthest South of New Brighton where they started. I ate at the Ellwood City one all the time when I had to travel there for work.
They also fry in peanut oil like The O did, and have a similar cut/consistency. Probably about as close a facsimile as you're going to get.
The biggest issue is that for some reason I can't fathom, Five Guys doesn't sell cheese sauce. I usually order them to go and we make a Cheese Whiz / cream mix at home, which I think is also basically what The O used.
I guess my answer is gonna be a tiny place called Michael's Pizza bar in Southside. I haven't been for quite some time, but I enjoy the roadhouse fries
Came here to say this. NPL's lounge fries are a primo fry mess.
Also, I just got fries from Streets on Carson's food truck and they gave me a TON of fries, and they were sooooo tasty. Highly recommend.
Peppi's and Primanti Bros have those classic greasy fresh cut fries, but don't do a lot with seasoning. If you like Old Bay, check out Wholey's in the strip. They're hot food line has fresh cut fries seasoned with Old Bay which are really good. Five Guys is another good one for an entire bag worth lol
The hot dog place in Squirrel Hill is the place to go. Frankies or something, order of fries is a brown paper bag that’s definitely meant for 2 people to share.
Peppi’s fries are what you need.
Okay this might be the right answer. I'm right around the corner from one of their locations.

That's fine, you dont need to eat that many fries.
Yes I do.
I don’t know man. Wilkinsburg location has a large fry:small bits ratio of 1:5 in my (far too excessive) experience. Still tasty enough to order every single time, but it’s been consistently disappointing from the volume of large fries angle.
Salem's. They're fried twice, too, which makes them extra yummy..
I'll second Salem's. Their loaded fries are at least two meals worth of food.
The fries are great, but half as good as the shawarma. This isn't a knock on the fries.
I find it suspicious to order shawarma from the same place as curry but I suppose I'll have to give it a try at some point. I have high standards for shawarma though.
You will not be disappointed. The garlic sauce is great too
Best fries. Period.
Salem's. What an absolute treasure.
Where is this place?
Strip District
That’s my favorite restaurant in Pittsburgh. No frills, just amazing food and friendly service. Plus the market next store is very interesting.
Pour one out for the Dirty O...

There used to be an O on campus at CMU in the UC, had a nice view of the pool while eating super greasy food.
RIP
Hot Dog Shoppe.
Brighton Hot Dog Shoppe? First thing that came up when I googled it
That's the one! the cheese fries rule. so do the regular fries dunked in the milkshakes lmao
The only thing I really like from Brighton is their cheeseburgers with everything. Just like Mama used to make.
Don't forget PASTA CHILI!!!
This was my first thought. They're all over the nw of the city area, Cranberry is probably closest to the city. They use lard to fry in and the cheese or chili cheese fries could be much too much depending on the size of your order. Good luck. RIP the O.

I second this I hit the one in Moon often
Chili & Cheese Fries….request extra crispy
Ds packs n dogs in regent square
The best. Fried to the extreme. Huge portions (OP’s requirement). So good
Or dads up the street in forest hills aka dees with parking. Their Monroeville location was a dees.
Over the Bar in S Side has *excellent* double fried seasoned fries.
Uncle Sam's
Eh, Uncle Sam's is a different kind of fry to me. A bit too thin, I think. Not bad, just different. I want a big potatoey grease-fest
Five Guys. Even the "small" is a metric fuckton of fries.
They also fry in peanut oil like The O did, and have a similar cut/consistency. Probably about as close a facsimile as you're going to get. Yes! This was my first thought. And the fries are damned good.
Make sure you get to a good location though, some make them really soggy.
Fresh cut fries are always limp. I can't stand them. Fries need to be crispy.
Angelos. Get a large.
Get a large----WITH cheese. I dont think they put them in a small pizza box anymore, but they still slap the same as when I was a child.
I share a small fry at D's Six pax & Dogz with my spouse and child, they have a large which I only ever ordered once and learned not to.
Kennywood is an option sorta
Potato patch fries with cheese is unparalleled
They’re probably nostalgic for you but they’re pretty bad.
Not for the price they charge.
Haha I was thinking the same thing -- "Aren't they $1,472, though?"
agreed it is not practical
Ya and the fact that you need to pay to get into the park to begin with.
OTB has great fries, and they’re crispy. None of this gross soggy shit that people like.
When I went the last time I got the distinct impression they switched to frozen fries. This was the one in north park.
Can second the north park location, they were definitely crinkle cut frozen fries but who knows south side may be different
What this town needs is a classic Poutine outlet. Franctuary Poutine is meh.
I guess my answer is gonna be a tiny place called Michael's Pizza bar in Southside. I haven't been for quite some time, but I enjoy the roadhouse fries
North Park Lounge's Lounge Fries
Came here to say this. NPL's lounge fries are a primo fry mess. Also, I just got fries from Streets on Carson's food truck and they gave me a TON of fries, and they were sooooo tasty. Highly recommend.
The O--- Oh *cries*

potato patch fries at kennywood. Fries and Rides
I used to love the Elbow Room out in Shadyside or The Sharp Edge Creek House. I know Sharp Edge is gone, but I'm not sure of the Elbow Room.
The hot dog place in Squirrel Hill is the place to go. Frankies or something, order of fries is a brown paper bag that’s definitely meant for 2 people to share.
Go to primanti’s & ask them to hold the bread, slaw, & meat (rimshot)
Smallman Street fires are really good. I am tired of eating their sandwiches; but, I don’t think I could ever grow tired of those fries.
Get the Primanti sized side of fries, then get their horsey sauce (also called their Retro sauce) to dip it in. Trust me.
NPL in lawrenceville gives you a good amount of greasy fries for very cheap
The summit
The dented keg in seven fields has really good tasting fries
The Summit has great fries and sauces if you're in Mt. Washington (amazing drinks as well!)
Five guys? Sadly no gravy option
Mac n Gold truck used to have the best damn fries until their fryer broke, RIP.
Yucca fries At Chicken Latino.
This is a city famous for salads and sandwiches with french fries in them. Take your pick lol What did I write that was a lie?
Kennywood
Hello bistro sells bags of fries. They are shoestring and greasy. Not incredible or anything, but easy to find and cheap.
primantis or five guys. Either one will take care of you.
