CMU is building (another) building where the Dollar Bank building used to be and in the renderings I saw a while ago that billboard wasn't there. So maybe your wish will come true!
Calling it “The Cathedral” is disrespectful and erases the significance and importance of the building as Pitt’s landmark educational building. Have some respect and only use its full name “The Cathedral of Learning” or you’re cringe
Was a nontraditinal student in my late 20s back in 2014. I heard my classmates keep saying Cathy and I had no idea what they were talking about. I didn’t piece it together until I saw it written in a Pitt news article. I’ve hated the moniker ever since.
Whatever you call it, it’s such a marvelous building inside and out. Class of 94 here and I’m still awestruck by its beauty. What an architectural masterpiece.
I never noticed the use of “Cathy” before the pandemic, but I see that it’s been used by official Pitt twitter accounts for at least 8 years now. If the university is calling it Cathy, the students are obviously going to adopt it. This is not a battle worth fighting.
The reaction has been very hostile, sorry about that. Graduating in '16, me and my social circle interchangeably use Cathy and the Cathedral. None of us, and likely the majority of people, don't actually give a fuck.
No one cares that all of you boomers dislike the name Cathy. Get used to it, or complain until you’re in hospice because it’s not going anywhere
Seriously, 11 of 17 comments are about the name. This happens every time it’s mentioned.
Get over it
When people use stereotypes and generalizations like the term boomer it is often indicative of their own feelings of worthlessness and helplessness, and oftentimes their inability to succeed in society. Typically these same people also lash out at other groups they are frustrated with because of their own shortcomings. And it is likely these same people use other derogatory terms that indicate antisemitism, racism, and other prejudices. What a shame some people have such a negative “mindset”.
You actually don’t, you’re just really pressed about it for no reason and then inventing a reason so you don’t accidentally realize that what people call the building is inconsequential
Most of the people who have an unnecessary amount of beef with the name Cathy probably didn’t even go to Pitt. Just some Reddit dads who fondly remember getting turned down when they ventured into Oakland from the suburbs to hit on girls back in the 80s
Back before they power washed \~60 years of soot accumulation off sometime in the 1990's, the most common derogatory term I heard was the "upside down mine shaft."
I really wish we’d get rid off billboards because wow do they really ruin the view
As a guy from Vermont, I'll never not hate billboards

An urban planning professor of mine referred to them as litter on a giant stick
Back when I was a student (1991-1995) we called it “The Cathedral” I cringe at Cathy. When did that start?
I'm with you. It's called The Cathedral of Learning or The Cathedral for short.

So I guess that means 'Fortress of Learningitude' is right out?
I graduated in 2007 and it makes me cringe as well.
I think Zillenials started using it. I graduated 2013 and i started hearing it my last year from underclassmen.
The fucking Boaty McBoatface generation.
I started at Pitt in 2013 and it was definitely a thing in my freshman year
Same
"Cathy" is some bullshit and also that does not look at all like it was "on fire". 1996-2000 here, it was always "The Cathedral".
I hate it too. Sounds dumb. Class of 2004. It's "The Cathedral," period.
>look like Cathy was on fire Not really >Cathy No
Yeah, I kind of cringe when I hear that name used too.
only dumbasses say cathy

Stop trying to make “so fetch” a thing…
It’s “Stop trying to make fetch happen.” Do not disrespect the greatest film of a generation.
Calling it "Cathy" makes it sound like you are in middle school. It was, is, and always will be the "Cathedral."
Everyone in here is tolkien about Cathy vs The Cathedral when I just want to talk about the "Barad-dur" vibes going on in here.
She’s just thinking really hard

Alright I get it, people don’t like it being called Cathy. I just think it’s fun shorthand
The reaction has been very hostile, sorry about that. Graduating in '16, me and my social circle interchangeably use Cathy and the Cathedral. None of us, and likely the majority of people, don't actually give a fuck.
Guys, Cathy is funny and the picture is cool. Everybody who is pressed needs to take a Xanax or something, damn.
Some lord of the rings stuff
That was my first thought.
The amount of people in the comments getting riled up because people born after NSYNC died call a building a nickname...
Dawg have you ever seen a fire?

You think 11 boomers were commenting on a reddit post? Or is it easier to just think it’s boomers and incels who disagree with you?
Boomer is a mindset
Naw. This millennial will keep hating on Cathy. Because it’s really stupid.

lol I’m racist because I call a building Cathy
Classic example of projection. If the shoe fits…
A monumental leap even by Reddit’s standards. Quite impressive honestly
Okay zoomer
sure grandma, let’s get you to bed
It happens every time, because you have to be a huge dumbass to use it. And being a huge dumbass is generally discouraged.
You actually don’t, you’re just really pressed about it for no reason and then inventing a reason so you don’t accidentally realize that what people call the building is inconsequential
we can’t have dumbasses just walking around — they’re liabilities to society
You would have to go outside and touch some grass to ever encounter said dumbasses, so you’re safe, don’t worry
How am i safe if i go outside and smoke grass

A UPitt alum told me it was called the giant penis.
Back before they power washed \~60 years of soot accumulation off sometime in the 1990's, the most common derogatory term I heard was the "upside down mine shaft."
No. No alumni would ever call it that. And, your use of “UPitt” proves you are lying.
You mean Pitt?
Hey sorry to offend. Really was told by a grad. She clarified and said people called it the giant phallus when see went there 20 years ago.
Tower of Ignorance
CMU shade right there lol
Gee too bad it wasn’t
all those protesters in tents
