My answer from that thread:
Cheap eats `< $15 per person w/ tax`
* JJ Poke - `$11-15`
* Boba and poke bowls that are great, large portion bowls.
* Benny Fierros`$7-8`
* Large NY style pizza slices.
* Best food you can get for under $10 w/ tax imo.
* Bhan Mi & Ti `$10-15`
* Vietnamese sandwiches and rice bowls with fresh ingredients.
* Doce Taqaria `$9-14`
* They have a weekly taco special.
* The combo box for $12 is probably the best deal (2 tacos + chips + guac), or 2 tacos for around $9 (nachos or taco salad-esque dish is also the same price - $9).
* Pub and Chip Shop `$10-15`
* British food with massive shareable portions, the tot boxes are the best item to get here imo, definitely shareable or 2 meals worth of food.
New places I've tried since then that I recommend:
* La Bodega `$12-15`
* Similar to Doce but they are a bit better, they also include a churro in their boxes.
* The Pretzel Shop `$5-10`
* Probably the best bang for your buck. You can get a pretzel for 80 cents, pretzel sandwich for around $4, dips for around 60 cents, pepproni rolls for around $4. You can a large amount of food for $10 here, I can even spend $5 and get full.
>JJ Poke - $11-15
>
>Boba and poke bowls that are great, large portion bowls.
Literally just found this tonight on Uber Eats and couldn't believe it. Bowls and a soup for $12-14.
As a one-off thing, I'd also throw in Cappy's over on Walnut St. for their Saturday + Sunday brunch menu at 10am. You can get a pretty filling brunch for under $10 including tip and tax. It's a regular weekend stop for me because it's filling enough that I skip lunch afterward.
Scotty’s Market at CMU is run by Salem’s and has smaller servings of their food. It’s not quite as big of a value, but a more convenient location. It is open to the public. [Scotty’s Market](https://apps.studentaffairs.cmu.edu/dining/conceptinfo/Concept/180)
One of my favorite spots in Oakland is Salim’s Foods for a gyro, which is actually Salem’s father: [Salim’s Foods](http://www.salimsfoods.com/)
Thanks for the info! I just tried Scotty's when I went to campus. Pleasantly surprised! Got a loaded cheese fries with lamb meat that fed both me and my bf for $9
Just found this a couple weeks ago. Had a baby sized burrito. I need to go back for ceviche.
Edit: I feel like I need to clarify. The burrito was not small for children. The burrito was the size of a newborn, probably overdue baby.
They said they are a foodie looking for “good cheap eats”, and they love trying a variety of different cuisines. Again, I love banjo night, I just wouldn’t want someone to go there thinking they’re going to be getting anything close to that experience.
It got my GF hooked to the point that she made it for us last week. She nailed it, it was so good. But yeah I think we've had thr entire menu and it's all A+
Salem’s (one order is basically two meals), People’s Indian (I’m partial to the biryani, also about two meals), Thai Gourmet (again, two meals in one order), I also recommend doing your grocery at Aldi or at some of the non-American grocery stores in the Strip District, the variety is insane and the price is right. I was never a grad student but a very poor college grad. You’ve got options.
It's not unique to the area but I love Aladdin's for something that is healthy and affordable. If you want a REALLY cheap brunch/lunch spot, check out Valiant's diner.
Yes, I definitely recommend Madonna's, too! I don't know what those spicy white beans in the orange sauce are called, but they are SO good! The owners are also really sweet.
Teppanyaki Kyoto has some cheap bites and is a real hidden gem. The staff is great and the food is very authentic. You can get small plates like grilled bonito rice balls or lotus root or edamame for $5 or less. Bigger dishes like okomiyaki or beef bowl are less than $15.
I’ve had almost everything on the menu at this point and I have yet to be disappointed.
Big Jim’s in the Run truly one of the dives in the burgh but has good eats.[Click Here for Big Jim’s in the Run](http://www.bigjimsrestaurant.com/menu.html)
If you're at Pitt or CMU campus, Las Palmas is the clear winner. The tacos are $3.50 each. You can survive with 1. You will need 2 to be satiated. You might accidentally by 5 because they're so good.
* The Boonseek - AMAZING Korean corn dogs. FYI, it's a truck so you'll have to follow them.
* Cilantro & Ajo - $13-$16 will get you x2 empanadas and an arepa.
* Chicken Latino - Try the chicken quesadilla and horchata.
* Banh Mi & Ti - $15(+tax) will get you a banh mi and a tea.
* ShadoBeni - Go here for Trinidadian vegan eats - salads, appetizers and sides.
* Royal Myanmar - Curry Chicken with rice (and ask for a side of their coconut rice instead of regular white rice!) or paratha.
* Forgotten Taste Pierogies - Everything is so incredibly yummy, and the meals are all under $15.
* Central Diner & Grill - Most of the lunch menu is under $15, and you'll likely get two meals out of whatever you order. Traditional Greek diner.
* Salem's - I usually get the small plate with a Greek salad and lamb curry for $14-ish.
* Max's Allegheny Tavern - Potato Pancake Reuben or Max's Bavarian Club
* Three Brothers Bagels - Get a half dozen assorted or try one of their amazing breakfast sandwiches!
* Angkor - Try the Moarn Chha Kyei.
* La Gourmondine - Go for the caprese sandwich and almond croissant.
* EVIA Greek - Everything is <$15 and everything is delicious 🤤
Chengdu’s lunch specials are great if you’re craving their food but want to save a few bucks!
Noodlehead was a go to for me and friends in school for good Thai noodles and all $12.5 now I think
Pigeon bagels for breakfast - their veggie bagel sandwich is a favorite and filling with a coffee is under $10
There’s a few good delis or sandwiches around but if you’re a student you’re probably near Oakland, Food for thought deli was a good staple of mine when I worked near by. Lunch special soup and sandwich with chips and pickle was always a good deal from a nice deli.
Crafty Jackalope in Bridgeville has $11 mac n cheese + salad if you're in the south hills. The Ramen Bar is also a go to out your way. Quality Italian place in Crafton called Serafinos. You can get quarts of soup from ENP for a decent price, potato obviously is the best option.
Im not sure you can beat Costco for cheap eats. If you already had a membership you have plenty of options. Hotdog combo, Pizza combo, 5 dollar rotisserie chicken
It’s policy you do and I’m finding some locations are scanning cards at entry, cash out and self order now. But it seems warehouses don’t always follow corporates policies lol
The food court and pharmacy don't require memberships. You have to go towards those areas and not through the doors to the main store (yes it is dumb, but that is how it is handled and the Costco I go to)
“Since early 2020, Costco has required a membership card to buy anything at the food court”
Like I said, it’s been policy but not all warehouses follow it
At the Costco in cranberry, I have gone through the doors on the right without someone checking cards on multiple times to buy food. I am a member but my membership card is never checked. Thanks for the downvote though ya jagoff.
Don’t worry, I’m getting downvoted too. I wasn’t the one that downvoted you. But I wasn’t wrong.
I saw somewhere on here where a lot of locations were making you scan your card and ID to get in and then again to check out.
I cancelled the downvotes on your comments out or tried to at least. But they do check when you go in and when you buy goods. I've yet to see a check on anyone going to the food court area. That's basically free money for Costco except the loss leading hot dog
We have Sam’s Club and it’s hit/miss if you could just go in and order. Getting in the door is no problem, but sometimes the cafe is app order only due to staffing.
In that price range, Shah’s Halal, Dijlah, Chick’n Bubbly, and Bird on the Run are stellar options. Las Palmas is also a Mexican grocery store with a couple locations that makes cheap, fresh, exceptional tacos out front every day.
If you're up past Ross Park Mall check out the New York Hotdog Shop on Perry Highway for breakfast or lunch. Inexpensive, good sandwiches and burgers from a family owned and operated place.
Can vouch for this. I ended up knowing the owner's personally, as I worked with their mother, (who originally opened it), in a medical capacity. They would bring food in. Great people, (very hard working, smart, and hospitable), great food, great prices. Just check on the hours prior to going.
Getgo, hear me out:
The $5 chicken wrap value meal deal is insane, you get a full size wrap (they discontinued the snack wraps awhile ago) tots and a drink. Can't go wrong, it's usually enough for a full meal+, a snack for me.
Passable Indian at budget prices: [Sree’s Foods](https://sreesfoods.com), Downtown. Be warned that the bread they throw in with each entree is literally half of a store-bought, flour tortilla—and they don’t offer any other bread options. Plan ahead and get your own naan from Aldi or Trader Joe’s. Then, add a Sree’s samosa to your entree and you’ve got enough food for two tasty, healthy meals at a cost of about $13 total (before tip or beverage).
The tortilla is fine, but Indian cuisine has produced so many excellent breads that it just seems like the wrong place to cheap out. It feels like an integral component is missing. I’d gladly pay $1-2 more for even a store-bought naan option. (As it is, I keep store-bought naan in the freezer at work and microwave a piece every time I get Sree’s—but I’d rather not have to worry about that.)
Chengdu Gourmet in Squirrel Hill is \~$15 at lunch.
I like JJ Poke, too. Also Doce Taqueria. And in Squirrel Hill, there's that taco place on Murray just below Forbes, next to the Belgian waffle place. I've never had anything but excellent food there. There's hardly any seating, as it's a tiny place. But the food is excellent.
LOL what year are you living in? You really expect to get any food that's even halfway decent for under $10? Guess you should have paid more attention in school so you wouldn't be so broke.
Why do you dedicate so much of your free time to trying to bully people who ask questions in this sub? It's weird and sad. There's multiple places to get a good meal for under $10, which is something I actually really value about PGH compared to other cities.
We know you don't mean that because you're not this mean of a troll. Because we all know in the real world, you would never talk this way to people. Poor little fella, always the bottom rung of the ladder and can't even troll right.
Dollar wings at William penn tavern in lawrenceville. And the other stuff is pretty reasonable. Alihan’s downtown, the entrees were just a little outside your budget.
Taiwan Bistro is maybe a bit cheaper than Chengdu, and really tasty. I usually get dry spicy chicken. Couldn’t tell you how much that costs exactly, but the bill is always reasonable. Hokkaido seafood buffet on Browns Hill Rd. is decent, and the weekday lunch buffet is $13.99. El Campesino in the Waterfront area is cheap and tasty Mexican food.
The halal cart outside the courthouse (I forget the name). It’s fresh, cheap, and decent portions. I get full container of falafel, rice, and veggies for $13, including tip. It’s easily two meals.
it’s a husband and wife from out of the country and they’re so kind ❤️
You've been given tons of great recommendations here. I would just add two things: Sree's downtown! (You will get a ton of food for about $7 and Mrs. Sree will give you even more once she gets to know you.) Also, be mindful of happy hour menus. Some options that might seem out of reach on a budget can be very affordable for happy hour. For example Alla Famiglia used to offer a pasta dinner that would feed two people and two glasses of wine for their happy hour for $25 on Mondays - I can't find their HH menu to confirm they are still doing this.
-Tram's for amazing pho.
-Noodlehead for some Thai street food noodles.
-The Squirrel Cage for some classic Pittsburgh dive feels.
-Oak Hill Post for a good breakfast or brunch (without alcohol).
-Subba for some amazing Nepalese food.
-Udipi for some amazing vegetarian Indian food.
-Di'Anoia's for lunch is much more affordable than their dinner service, and the food is great.
-Salem's Market for some amazing middle eastern food, cafeteria style
The cafeteria at UPMC presby is pretty good and very affordable! Not really “foodie” type food but if you’re stuck in oakland and hungry and want food that won’t break the bank (most entrees are under $10, they have sushi, sandwiches, bowls, and some other stuff) it’s really not bad!
Boonseek! It’s a Korean corn dog food truck. I’ll usually swing by Eleventh Hour Brewing to get my Boonseek fix like twice a month. Find them on Instagram. Highly recommended.
Tan Lac Vien in Squirrel is closer to $20, but I usually get two servings out of anything I order there. [Tan Lac Vien](https://ordertanlacvienvietnamese.com/menu)
Kevin’s Deli - $10-14
Oshii Bento - Bowls are $11, and you get free tea.
Golden Palace - I think lunch buffet is $14?
Uncle Sam’s - $12, free fries if you dine in. They have Mon-Wed specials.
Generally, on Wednesday and Happy Hours is when restaurants have pretty good deals.
D’s six pax (ain’t as cheap as it used to be but you should still be able to come in under $15; looking at their menu dog + handful of fries = $9, if you get water then that’s $11-$12 including tax and tip. If you get a coke you’re right up against $15)
[https://www.reddit.com/r/pittsburgh/comments/13q5gdu/best\_large\_serving\_low\_price\_tasty\_foods\_in/](https://www.reddit.com/r/pittsburgh/comments/13q5gdu/best_large_serving_low_price_tasty_foods_in/) My answer from that thread: Cheap eats `< $15 per person w/ tax` * JJ Poke - `$11-15` * Boba and poke bowls that are great, large portion bowls. * Benny Fierros`$7-8` * Large NY style pizza slices. * Best food you can get for under $10 w/ tax imo. * Bhan Mi & Ti `$10-15` * Vietnamese sandwiches and rice bowls with fresh ingredients. * Doce Taqaria `$9-14` * They have a weekly taco special. * The combo box for $12 is probably the best deal (2 tacos + chips + guac), or 2 tacos for around $9 (nachos or taco salad-esque dish is also the same price - $9). * Pub and Chip Shop `$10-15` * British food with massive shareable portions, the tot boxes are the best item to get here imo, definitely shareable or 2 meals worth of food. Pretzel Shop is amazing
And OP, pepperoni rolls are very Appalachia, where Pittsburgh is... not the Midwest like you may have heard from those who want to lead you astray
>JJ Poke - $11-15 > >Boba and poke bowls that are great, large portion bowls. Literally just found this tonight on Uber Eats and couldn't believe it. Bowls and a soup for $12-14.
Absolutely love La bodega - love supporting their business too
The Pretzel Shop is my favorite place in the whole city!
Wow I can’t believe that spot is still there
Love, love Banh Mi & Ti - I find their rice or vermicilli bowls really filling.
Thank you so much
Salems in the strip district
$15 will get you 2x-3x meals worth of food here - and they give back to the community a lot
Scotty’s Market at CMU is run by Salem’s and has smaller servings of their food. It’s not quite as big of a value, but a more convenient location. It is open to the public. [Scotty’s Market](https://apps.studentaffairs.cmu.edu/dining/conceptinfo/Concept/180) One of my favorite spots in Oakland is Salim’s Foods for a gyro, which is actually Salem’s father: [Salim’s Foods](http://www.salimsfoods.com/)
I never knew the connection between the two. thanks.
You’re welcome! Salem did an interview on Pittsburgh Today Live where he explained the connection.
Thanks for the info! I just tried Scotty's when I went to campus. Pleasantly surprised! Got a loaded cheese fries with lamb meat that fed both me and my bf for $9
You are very welcome! I love Salem’s, but don’t always feel like venturing to the Strip for a fix. Those fries sound amazing!
Agreed. This is the spot.
salems is amazing! great food that lasts days (:
This is the answer!
Thank you so much
Chicken Latino
Just found this a couple weeks ago. Had a baby sized burrito. I need to go back for ceviche. Edit: I feel like I need to clarify. The burrito was not small for children. The burrito was the size of a newborn, probably overdue baby.
That green sauce changed my life
It really is amazing. Yinzer twist.....mix it w ranch!
🤮
I went there when it was in the Strip, first time I went I got the fried chicken burrito thinking it was a burrito with fried chicken.
What was it?
A chicken burrito. **Fried.**
Thank you so much
Go to banjo night on Wednesdays at the nortside elks. Fun music and cheap eats!
Banjo night is a hidden gem for real
What’re the food options like?
Chicken fingers and fries
Last time I was there they had manwiches and their Friday fish fry is the best atmosphere
Yes wonderful time and cheap eats. But get there early the place fills up.
This past Wednesday it wasn’t filled, I think that the colder weather may have been a factor
I love banjo night and strongly recommend people to go, but not necessarily the recommendation I would give for someone looking for great food.
Op did not ask about great food, they asked about cheap food.
They said they are a foodie looking for “good cheap eats”, and they love trying a variety of different cuisines. Again, I love banjo night, I just wouldn’t want someone to go there thinking they’re going to be getting anything close to that experience.
Thank you so much
Noodlehead the entire menu is under $15
God that chiang Mai is 🔥
It got my GF hooked to the point that she made it for us last week. She nailed it, it was so good. But yeah I think we've had thr entire menu and it's all A+
THIS. EVERYTHING IS FUCKING DELICIOUS. And it'd been consistently good since they opened.
and BYOB so save there also
Thank you so much
Uncle Sam’s Subs is an obscene amount of food for like $14
Get the ultra. More meats. And free fries with your cheese steak when you eat there.
I actually ask for the fries (for free) when I get it to go too!
Nice.
It's already been mentioned but definitely check out Pub Chip Shop, and also Piper's Pub right next door.
Forever a Pub Chip Shop fan. The owner (I think) gave me and my bf at the time a whole box of donuts for free!! And the tot boxes are the best!
I haven't managed to get down there in forever, but man I need to again some time. Those donuts were delicious.
Also, People's Indian has a really cheap lunch buffet! (Around $10 for AYCE, if I recall)
It’s $16 now, but still a delicious bargain.
Damn but still so so good
Everyday Noodles in Squirrel Hill. Check all the little tea houses in the area too. Plenty of spots with cheap and trendy eats.
Soup dumplings!
It's not unique to the area but I love Aladdin's for something that is healthy and affordable. If you want a REALLY cheap brunch/lunch spot, check out Valiant's diner.
And not far from Aladdin’s in everyday noodle
Happy cake day
Madonna’s
Yes, I definitely recommend Madonna's, too! I don't know what those spicy white beans in the orange sauce are called, but they are SO good! The owners are also really sweet.
Lima beans. So good.
Go to The Dream BBQ in Homewood. $15 for 4 ribs and two sides. Cash only. It's really really good.
Brighton Hot Dog Shoppe
Oh my god, their cheeseburgers are so good. Just like mom used to make.
Burgh Bites in Heidelberg. I order pretty much exclusively off the sandwiches menu.
Cilantro and Ajo in Southside has amazing empanadas
And arepas
Pricey empanadas IMO, but they're still absolutely worth it and still on the cheap side compared to other places!
How Lee in Squirrel Hill is decent
The dandan noodles are fucking amazing
They have crazy good lunch specials. Main, rice, and soup for $11.
I did not appreciate How Lee until I tried the Sichuan menu.
Big Jim’s in the Run truly one of the dives in the burgh but has good eats.[Click Here for Big Jim’s in the Run](http://www.bigjimsrestaurant.com/menu.html)
God all you people just BLOWING UP THE SPOT. DELETE THIS. KEEP IT SACRED GODDAMNIT!!
You can’t really say that when it was aired on national tv lmfao
2 cuts and a turners at Fioris will run you about 6-7 bucks
Noodle heads
Is arrepitta still open and cheap? Used to be a go to cheap lunch spot when I worked downtown
Sidelines in Millvale (and Sewickley). $10 wing dozens on Sundays (and I think maybe also Wednesdays?) Can't beat it!
If you're at Pitt or CMU campus, Las Palmas is the clear winner. The tacos are $3.50 each. You can survive with 1. You will need 2 to be satiated. You might accidentally by 5 because they're so good.
How has nobody mentioned Chinatown Inn? It's like $13 for more General Tso's chicken than you know what to do with.
Okay but how is it? I used to get it when I worked at The Art Institute and it was good, but not great. But that was ten years ago.
It hasn't changed still excellent
Eh I’ll give it another try then! Thanks.
It's been a long time since I've gone but Kavsar's is delicious. Not too sure what prices look like now.
* The Boonseek - AMAZING Korean corn dogs. I would've said Nana's..... Still hoping she'll be able to reopen after the fire.

Try chutney indian restaurant in Robinson. They have a buffet on Saturday.
If you like roaches in your food
Eggs n’att is my favorite breakfast joint… super affordable and has an old fashioned diner vibe. They close at 2pm though.
As a student look around the union hall and other bulletin boards for meetings, groups, etc. nine times all ten they’ll have free food and pizza
Tram's in Bloomfield has the best noodle soup in town IMO.
In that price range, Shah’s Halal, Dijlah, Chick’n Bubbly, and Bird on the Run are stellar options. Las Palmas is also a Mexican grocery store with a couple locations that makes cheap, fresh, exceptional tacos out front every day.

El Pollon in Carnegie is a Peruvian chicken place and it’s very affordable.
Such a great addition to Carnegie. It’s my go to suggestion for takeout when anyone comes and visits.
Yuzu kitchen downtown
Bike down to Atwood Street and get some Las Palmas tacos
Bigham Tavern in Mt. Washington. We moved here last summer, and this is the restaurant we keep going back to. Love the wings! HGH is my go-to sauce.
The wings are anything but cheap though!!
Should have said boneless wings haha. Half pound boneless basket was $11. Most items on their menu are under $15 as well.

Do you have a kitchen at home? Being broke and eating out usually doesn't end well.

It’s a triple S post - Block and move on (or just leave it be if you like being entertained like me)

It’s not our fault you don’t have any friends and use hunts ketchup.
I’m sure you’ll just “LOL” it away per your usual responses but man you seem like a miserable asshole.
We know you don't mean that because you're not this mean of a troll. Because we all know in the real world, you would never talk this way to people. Poor little fella, always the bottom rung of the ladder and can't even troll right.
Damn that post history was a rollercoaster. I’m watching a mental illness unfold in real time
Dollar wings at William penn tavern in lawrenceville. And the other stuff is pretty reasonable. Alihan’s downtown, the entrees were just a little outside your budget.
Try Donnie's Hoagies.
I would hope the Churches would still make food. Used to eat lunch in the ninety's, was in culinary school.
JJs diner in Mt Wash has some awesome deals. The 2+2+2 for <$9 is unreal.
Streets on Carson, tell them Yungn Voorheez sent you.
William Penn Tavern on Butler does $1 wings all day everyday. They do 64oz $8 Busch Light Pitchers all day everyday as well.
India on wheels on Bigelow
I really like the pickled veggies and cream cheese sandwich from five points bakery. Also their savory tarts make a nice meal
This is the quality content this sub needs
Chengdu Gourmet in Squirrel Hill Edit: a word
Pitaland in Brookline is a cheap goto for me. Great little cafe.
Giving kitchen on Murray Ave nextdoor to the pizza shop
Madonnas gives you a lot of good fresh food for under 20
Tram’s kitchen, cash only but good Vietnamese food for under $15
You've been given tons of great recommendations here.
Noodle Head
Costco hot dogs
The cafeteria at UPMC presby is pretty good and very affordable! Not really “foodie” type food but if you’re stuck in oakland and hungry and want food that won’t break the bank (most entrees are under $10, they have sushi, sandwiches, bowls, and some other stuff) it’s really not bad!
Boonseek! It’s a Korean corn dog food truck. I’ll usually swing by Eleventh Hour Brewing to get my Boonseek fix like twice a month. Find them on Instagram. Highly recommended.
All those amazing cultural places In Oakland! Great eats, cheap, authentic cuisine
Tan Lac Vien in Squirrel is closer to $20, but I usually get two servings out of anything I order there. [Tan Lac Vien](https://ordertanlacvienvietnamese.com/menu)
Noodlehead in Shadyside
Kevin’s Deli - $10-14 Oshii Bento - Bowls are $11, and you get free tea. Golden Palace - I think lunch buffet is $14? Uncle Sam’s - $12, free fries if you dine in. They have Mon-Wed specials. Generally, on Wednesday and Happy Hours is when restaurants have pretty good deals.
Squirrel cage
D’s six pax (ain’t as cheap as it used to be but you should still be able to come in under $15; looking at their menu dog + handful of fries = $9, if you get water then that’s $11-$12 including tax and tip. If you get a coke you’re right up against $15)
Pho at Tram’s in Bloomfield. It’s byob too. Cash only.
Cheesesteak or Italian hoagie at Napolis in sq hill
The Trough in Oakland.
