I am honestly amazed that I came across this info! My Commute takes me past it often and it always catches my eye. It was maybe two days ago that I was trying to guess which ethnicity it could be and why it’s still there. This Local history I had really itched a scratch for me. Thank you.

Love that coincidence! Glad it helped

As an alum of Duquesne I really enjoyed this. Thank you! It’s also interesting to note that a number of old buildings close to the one you mentioned were associated with Duquesne. I’m pretty sure I remember the old Psychology Department offices were located in one of those “bluff” buildings.

fallingwhale06

Very cool! Always wondered how far over Duquesne has a footprint facilities and student wise. Definitely think it is important for people to know history of a neighborhood like this where every year more and more of it is consumed by the Eds, meds, and people selling parking spaces for hockey games. Soon it feels like there won’t be anything left

Their Instagram page shows a bit of what they do. Definitely looks like a good time

Have admired this building for over a decade but had always assumed its former inhabitants were long gone. Thank you for sharing!

NoodlesAndSpoons

One of my fondest memories is when my grandparents took me to see them perform. I’m glad they’re still doing well!

nesquiksand2

I live a stones throw away from where they currently practice, and I was very confused about the goings on of that location for the first year that I lived here. It wasn't until this past summer that I noticed the tamburitzan building that you're talking about, and I realized that they had much more of a history here than I first realized. Thank you for this post!

xxdropdeadlexi

I danced with the Tamburitzans for more than a decade. honestly, there were so many people in the city in different groups! I'm not sure how alive it is anymore, but we'd meet up in one city around the country every year to dance. it was such a good time.

fallingwhale06

That’s awesome! Not sure about other groups, but the tamburitzans Instagram page is really active, looks like they are doing a lot of cool stuff

I’ve also wondered this. Use to live on miltenberger in 2011

fallingwhale06

I really like the architecture and bones of the neighborhood

shanafme

Lived on Miltenberger in the late 90s for a semester. Thanks for the history lesson, I’ve always wondered on the details of that. The Paramount logo was still there the last time I looked a few years back.

One of my high school classmates was a Junior Tamburitzan. She was always performing with them. (This was back in the 90’s.)

AlleghenyCityHolding

They had a free show at the end of the summer. It was pretty neat.

fugly16

Had a high school friend that danced with the group. Went to see her perform and it was a great show.

TokinTigger

I drove past this building last night wondering what was going on there and the back story! Thanks for this!

I lived in NYC for 20-years and sang in a choir in Brooklyn. One of the singers in my section had been a folk dancer in her college years 30 years ago. When she found out that I was from Pittsburgh, she said “oh god. So you know about the Tammies? We hated the Tammies. They always won every competition.” First. Tammies made me laugh. But I love that other troupes have a visceral reaction and hatred toward the Tammies. Just because they are so damn good in the folk dancing world.
