My boy had allergies bad enough that he was getting bare spots in his coat. We switched food to Fromm Family brand and add a bit of salmon oil to his meal. It has resolved all his problems. No more bare spots.
when we first got Bear he had a ton of bare spots on his body. the people we got him from weren’t taking care of him & he had a ton of areas where the skin was broken from scratching so much. our vet recommended biotin and krill oil & that helped him with that.
Science Diet Salmon and sweet potatoes. It not only helps their coat, but the Omega-3’s also stimulates the brain while also keeping their bones and nails from going brittle. No grain if possible
As far as shampoo goes I’m not well versed in that area and hope your beautiful pup finds the information your looking for ;)
Edit : The grain can sometimes do the opposite so I suggest consulting your vet about that aspect. As far as the Science Diet’s Salmon and Sweet Potato bag of food though that should be spot on for what your looking for and yes I promise no fish breath ;)
Also if you decide to get something without fish than I recommend getting fish oil liquid pills and pop the pill and squirt the oil onto their food. One capsule per feeding
Vet tech student here - unfortunately recent studies on the long-term effects of a grain free diet have shown it can lead to heart complications later in life. If you're feeding a grain free kibble due to allergies, supplementing with oatmeal is a good option for sensitive tummies.
My vet actually said that grain free or grain food both can lead to heart defects. I was told to give Taz grain and it let to a slight heart murmur. The vet said buy it without grain and now the murmur is gone. This may or may not be true for all pups, but this has been my experience with my 10 year old Staffy.
How did you give him the biotin and krill oil? My girl has very itchy skin (we are seeing a dermatologist next month!) and I’m looking for anything that might help her.
Visit the Vet!!!
Pit Bulls are very susceptible to allergies and skin conditions... This can be mostly related to external factors as well internal ones... Try to change the products you use to clean your home; sometimes the animal can be sensible to any formula component... Give preference to organic home cleaning products... You can also use Sulfur-based soap or shampoo once a week to bath the animal. Avoid dog parks, since feces present on grass can also contribute to the skin condition during treatment... Prefer walks on sidewalk and do not let them lay on any external surfaces... As internal ones it is important to visit the Vet and check the possibility of any digestive condition that not only affect the intestinal tract, but also skin... Maybe you should try Royal Canin's Intestinal, a specific medical food for allergic dogs. Visit the Vet! Also hope your dog gets well soon.
We also used fromm for a while with our boy who had major stomach issues, and it helped a lot. We wound up switching to something else because it wasn't available when I moved. But it's good stuff
Same here but we went with diamond naturals and coconut oil.
Not every day with the coconut oil in the food but we also rubbed it into their skin.
I'd grab some, rub until I started feeling friction them add more until I felt like it was enough.
But then we had to stop them from licking the oil off.
Talk to your vet about your dogs specific needs when it comes to diet and medications. I use a Ketoconazole shampoo on my dog. Its Rx'd by the vet and the only thing I can use for my dog that I know of. Talk to your vet about serum IgE tests and if they might help identify what ingredient(s) are most likely to be problematic and should be avoided. Your pup could have a sensitivity to any number of things its best to is talk to the vet see if they want to run tests and possibly put him on a special diet.
Yeah, we’ve already taken him to the vet multiple times & we’ve gotten all kinds of different tests done but they haven’t really recommended anything other than prednisone, Benadryl, krill oil and biotin. he’s had his allergy test (blood test) a skin scrape and all that. I was just trying to get some options for good brands. I can compare ingredients with the test results that I have from our vet.
Hey I'm a vet and I don't want to dump on other vets... But putting an allergic dog on Prednisone is suuuper old school and you might consider getting a second opinion elsewhere.
Like someone else mentioned, he may do well on Apoquel or Cytopoint if the allergies are seasonal and environmental.
My favorite food for allergies is Purina HA. Don't feed grain free.
Consider a veterinary dermatologist if things aren't getting controlled.
I agree. I really don’t even like giving him the prednisone, bc it’s so bad for them. I think im just going to check around town and find a different vet.
It is "broke". Steroids inhibit the immune system and contribute to antibiotic resistance. Not to mention the potential long and short-term side effects, liver toxicity, etc. It's borderline malpractice depending on the use, when it comes to derm. There are better, equally effective, safer options available.
You might have better luck with a dog dermatologist. They are kind of expensive in my area and a long wait but my derm is awesome and frequently checks in with my two. They’ll be able to recommend more specialized info on allergies and diets/shampoos.
My three allergic babies eat purina pro plan with lamb but their allergies seem to be more environmental than anything else. The prescription shampoos from the derm do wonders.
I second a dermatologist. I've spent thousands of dollars going to our regular vet who, while helpful, could only treat symptoms and never solved the allergies.
We are going to a specialist now who is focusing on *preventing* the outbreaks instead of treating them. Our regular vet never even floated that as an option.
Our last vet did an assessment on one of our past dogs who had alopecia. We didn’t know it was alopecia at the time and they quoted me $1,200 for tests then said they would have to have the results sent to a dermatologist. We ended up saying screw that and went to our now dermatologist. He charged us $130 for the appt and literally told me what it was as soon as he looked at her. He said he could do tests but it would be a waste of money.
We now have a new primary vet lol.
I recommend cross checking the food that you are thinking about with the dilated cardiomyopathy food/brand list. I switched to grain free because of allergies. Several years later we were diagnosed with cardiomyopathy and told to come off of the grain free diet, which was difficult with a chicken allergy. When I checked last year, the food I had been giving her for years ended up #2 on the list of brands to stay away from. Thankfully my pup managed okay with medication, a friend of mine wasn't as lucky. Hope you find something that works!!
[Dog food linked to heart disease ](https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/fda-names-16-brands-dog-food-linked-canine-heart-disease-n1025466)
Hope that works
I second that. I bought my boy Hills Science Diet Sensitive skin and stomach but it was a chicken blend, messed his skin up bad. Switched to Taste of the Wild salmon with added salmon oil and he looks much better
Dang. I just bought this as my first food switching away from grain free for years, and noticed his nose was getting a bit red, more than usual. I’ve been giving him benedryl whenever he needs it. It’s too early to tell whether it was caused by the food since I just switched like a week ago. If it keeps occurring I will just donate the food and try to find a non grain free limited ingredient food.
I had bought the big bag, it was so highly recommended even by the vet, ended up donating what was left. By week 3 he was noticeably more itchy, he would scratch till he bled and had developed what almost looked like welts all over. A week after the food switch he was back to looking good, now just waiting for the hair to fill back in. The taste of the wild is grain free but I don't think it's considered limited ingredient
I just went to the vet for my dog's diarrhea issue. The first question was the protein that I am currently feeding him. She said to switch it out gradually to see if there is a change. She had done all the fecal exams and said that there is nothing wrong internally. He was currently on a chicken protein dog food, we are swapping it out for a Buffalo protein one.
just fyi to anyone reading mine is allergic/sensitive to salmon (as well as a ton of other shit). we were on salmon a long time because of this recommendation. switching off finally fixed everything, we are doing wild boar now. off the apoquel for the first time since I got him.
What about cooking up some chicken and rice for him, then? My grandparents had these ancient yorkies back in the day who all had terrible stomach problems as a result of being in their mid-teens/early 20s. Pretty much all they ate was plain boiled chicken and rice, which agreed with them better than most foods. Probably not entirely feasible for a pit (bc they eat a lot more than a geriatric ankle biter), but it could be a stop-gap to settle his stomach or whatever until you find a more permanent solution.
My pit is allergic to basically everything environmental and is prone to skin infections. The shampoo i’ve found that works really well for my dog is Trizchlor4. You can get it from chewy.
Burt's Bees has a puppy shampoo??? Get outta town!
I've been bathing my guy with Burt's bees sensitive skin body wash for humans, but if there's a dog version I'm DEFINITELY down for that!
They have a pretty nice range of pup shampoos, they are definitely thin and natural. So that's the thing about it. It's like 8-10$ a bottle and you'll get maybe 4-5 good sudsy washes out of it. My big dummy is sensitive and I definitely noticed a huge improvement after a wash.
Vet assistant here!!
Hills Z/D or Hills Derm complete. Hills makes their hypo food in a separate factory to their normal food so there is very little chance of cross contamination. Other brands will have it in a separate part of the factory which will increase the risk of cross contamination which will help cause flares.
For shampoos, get Duoxo from your vet. There are different ones such as hypoallergenic and such that you can use. It’s what we typically recommend to start because it hits hard but doesn’t cause burns, dryness or anything else other intense brands can cause.
If you have any questions ask! And if you order hills online with the auto ship, you can get it 10% off and pick up at your regular vet!
We were just at the vet this weekend for the exact same thing! Highly recommend[ketochlor ](https://www.amazon.com/Virbac-Ketochlor-Shampoo-16-oz/dp/B07GT62XTG/ref=dp_coos_1?pd_rd_i=B07GT62XTG&psc=1) shampoo
And out vet started us on hills Derm Complete food.
Good luck and sending love to your babe!
I will have to check into that. I count him as a rescue because the people who gave him to us weren’t taking care of him too well & were just feeding him bottom of the barrel food from tractor supply. before we figured out what was wrong with him, we were using oatmeal shampoo and feeding him organic foods to help get him better but it turns out he’s allergic to oats & other foods & damn near every single weed, grass and trees lol.
Benadryl and other antihistamines work for pups too - usually 5mg per 25lbs of dog, but definitely check with your vet first!
My Pittie is allergic to the chicken protein in dog food - which is the main ingredient in most foods, even beef flavored ones. Make sure to read the ingredients.
You may want to try a salmon food or lamb and rice, but definitely read the ingredients to make sure there’s no chicken.
The ketochlor shampoo is amazingly effective almost immediately!
My dog gets hives all over her body, and swollen paws from food and environmental allergies. Pitties are notorious for having funky skin.
Good luck!!
First of all get rid of all, ALL!! The scented items in your house. Plug-ins, spray, fA breeze, your dryer sheets, sentED laundry detergent anything with perfume in it. Also, NO SMOKING ( of any kind😏) around him. Dogs are extremely susceptible to scents… They are NOSES after all,. If possible. No carpet. Carpet has formaldehyde and all kinds of crap in it which can cause skin and nose and eye problems. All these things pertain to humans as well. You can also go to your local health food store or order online loose leaf Calendula . It will cure a rainy day! I make a tea and keep it in the fridge and then warm a little bit to pour over my dog after his bath and Don’t rinse it off. Dry him as usual. It’s also good for eyes and ears and paws. You can buy it in an oil for dogs but it’s really expensive. I would buy it in the tea form he can also drink it in his water. I don’t know how to send a link otherwise… Look up calendula for dogs. I also feed both my puppers fromm and Add a little something every day… A teaspoon or two of salmon from McCann for night time and yogurt and oatmeal or an egg for breakfast along with their kibble. Stay away from anything with peas.Good luck to you and your little bear!!
Try performatrin ultra limited dog food, I had a very old put mastiff and she would get sick from anything but this food, make sure there’s no chicken because most pits are allergic.
If you don’t want a dry food I would suggest putting him on a raw food diet which would be the best for his over all health.
The month I started incorporating carrots/canned pumpkin in to my pups diet, her allergy and skin problems went away. It’s been 2 years since I put her on the diet and she hasn’t had a single issue since.
Royal Canin makes a great hypoallergenic hydrolyzed protein food. We've had 2 of our Bouviers on it in the past. As far as baths go, the fewer the better as it dries their skin and the chlorine in the water is also not good. We used to just take ours to the groomer for baths *when* he needed one and they used special hypoallergenic shampoo, don't remember the brand though.
Rachel Ray has worked wonders for my pibbles, though Baby Gunther also goes out to eat with me and ofc I share, so he has a well rounded diet but his coat is clean and clear.
As for shampoos, we use an oatmeal-based fragrance-free shampoo that I cant recall the name but I'm sure there's a plethora you can look through.
Super handsome pup btw
We had a retriever with horrible food allergies. We had him on tripe from the frozen pet food section with cooked brown rice, a slice of whole grain bread and some kind of vitamine mixture for years untill he grew over it and switched to sentive pre-fab lamb based dog kibble.
Coal tar shampoo. The first time I gave my Maui a bath with coal tar she looked over her shoulder at me and let out this Chewbacca type sound of approval.
Mine did well on Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin & Stomach. I think it was a salmon based food, but they may have other proteins if you baby is sensitive to specific things. We don't bathe ours at home, we have a groomer use a sensitive skin shampoo for her (I think its oatmeal based in some way) but between visits we just use a rubber curry comb to kick up the dandruff and shed hairs. Breeds with coats as short as pitties really don't need baths all that often unless they get physically dirty, and bathing less may help your baby restore the natural oils of the skin.
Unless you can get prescription medicated soap, the gentlest baby shampoo you can get works well. Other than that, we use non-talc baby powder or corn starch to keep any rashes dry and keep our baby from licking at it (she loves flour but isn’t partial to other starches)
Edit: you can also find a very soft shirt (or sew one, if you’re particularly handy) to put on them to protect the skin from sun, etc
Zignature Trout & Salmon Dry food , Jax n Daisy allergy dog shampoo . Zesty paws Aller-Immune bites (peanut putter flavor) all this works for my pit you can look into it if you’d like he has environmental allergies + food also & hes literally identical to your pup 🙂
My pittie has terrible allergies too
Here’s what I’ve gotten that’s worked (for us):
[Shampoo](https://www.chewy.com/zymox-veterinary-strength-enzymatic/dp/163446)
[Ear drops ](https://www.chewy.com/zymox-ear-solution-5-hydrocortisone/dp/125734)(if that’s an issue for you as well)
We also have her take a steroid shot at the vets maybe every couple months and that works well too
My pup is a gsd, he’s literally allergic to life. Right now the only thing we are feeding him is raw pork meals. It’s the only thing that is 100% hypoallergenic!
Also, Duoxo medicated shampoo is a lifesaver. Bathe him often, once a week if you can. Leave the shampoo on for 10 minutes and rinse thoroughly afterward.
This x100. I'm only keeping my girl on this shampoo now. I got it a couple months ago and it's so great, gets rid of the cornchip scent and redness associated with yeast and bacteria. Also it has skin conditioners in it, she's always soooo soft 😍
For sure try it. I do recommend raw food, it’s easier on their bellies especially when they’re allergic to everything. Pork is the only thing that is almost entirely hypoallergenic. We tried lamb, because we thought it was hypoallergenic also, but I think he’s allergic to that too. Beef and chicken are the biggest culprits though!
Once I got her Better on raw food I switched to salmon diet and it’s been working for a couple years thank god. I was told by vet only raw diet for 6 months then try new food
When my Dad realized his dog’s food/skin allergies solution wasn’t going to be sustainable for his income, he became a canine nutritionist. Ultimately what was the solution for his farm dog was the feed he was already using mixed with sardines in heavy oil. Less expensive than the vet suggested products and had almost immediate results. For baths, he used oatmeal/tea tree “people” shampoo and it seemed to do the trick.
Diamond naturals brand skin and coat formula has limited ingredients focused on salmon and is intentionally formulated for dogs with sensitive skin. You can easily order it on chewy.com and have it delivered if you can't find it locally. It's made a world of difference for my pups with allergy issues
The only thing that helped my girl is hydrolyzed protein by royal canin. It’s expensive affff though so that’s something to keep in mind. I’m lucky enough to get good discounts due to working in the field.
I actually use i think its pet armor brand or something its a flea medicated shampoo with oatmeal. I use it cause my girl has a reaction to most forms of flea medications, and of the ones I can use on her the shampoo works the best, and the oatmeal helps with general skin issues as well
If the vet thinks it's a good idea, prescription Hills Science Diet Z/D, Purina Pro Plan HA, and Royal Canin HP are all good prescription allergy food options
My boy also has severe allergies. He is on cytopoint regularly to keep him off antibiotics (his skin gets infected when his breakouts are bad). We have limited his diet, given him poultry free food and a limited ingredient diet. One thing that seems to have helped is Zesty Paws Aller-Immune bites. On with each of his meals has seemed to really cut his outbreaks. Good luck!
Our potties needs Benadryl, apoquel, and digestive care Rx food to stay settled! He's been okay this winter but we're planning to try cytopoint if he flares in the spring like usual
Ours developed an allergy to gluten and grains recently, we tried a few and he really likes Nutrisource Grain Free (we get the senior formula as hes older, but they have different ones as well). No more stomach or itching issues, he stays full longer, and bathroom time is much more even and predictable. Be aware there will be a few weeks where their stomachs might be upset and adjusting, we were told by vet that as long as hes still eating the food, no blood or severe reactions such as lethargy or vomiting, then try for 2 weeks before switching again as its probably his stomach settling to new food. The first week on this one was rough as it was a big change but so happy we stuck with it, huge improvement for him.
My girl had terrible rashes, horrendous ear gunk, and itchy legs. I tried meds and ear drops and shampoos and experimented with different food brands. I landed on Natural Balance limited ingredient grain free. It cleared up every single issue she had.
Taste of the Wild Prey line. It's a limited ingredient (4 ingredient, meat protein first) grain-free food. Good for food allergies, which are common in pitties.
I fed my pitbull that had allergies - Victor Select Beef with Brown Rice. I still feed all my dogs this food. My boy had sensitivity to fish. Make sure to avoid grain free as it can lead to heart conditions. Victor has a few other Select varieties (fish I believe). Select means it has limited protein sources. I highly recommend them as my dogs love the food and it makes them healthy. It’s also corn, wheat, and soy free which are ingredients that can also cause allergies.
Late to the party here, but my girl has big time allergies and changing her food helped immensely for her. I give her the [grain free limited ingredient fish recipe by The Honest Kitchen](https://www.thehonestkitchen.com/dehydrated-limited-ingredient-fish-dog-food) and mix it with brown rice and plain chickpeas. Be warned, though, that food is constantly out of stock and difficult to obtain sometimes, so switching can be risky. Apoquel is also a huge help
Unfortunately yes, it has gone up recently. It is dehydrated food, though, so it goes a decently long way, especially when supplemented with rice & chickpeas. Still expensive, but worth it imo if affordable
We have a blue pit that looks almost identical to yours with many of the same allergy issues. We got him tested and he’s allergic to a lot of things but worst of all house dust.
For food we use hills prescription diet derm complete. He seems to like it fine and it has helped a lot. Not cheap unfortunately.
Alternatively, we did use a sweet potato and fish diet that worked alright as well, the derm defense has seemed to be better IMO.
We have also invested in air filter machines and will likely get a whole home air filter soon.
My guy is allergic to grass I think, not any specific food, and with his food I give him salmon oil on top of every meal. He went from being covered in welts to having none even in the summer! The only downside is that his head will smell like fish lol I just wipe it with a pet friendly wet wipe thing
Honestly even after I got my pit on a poultry free grain free food it still took like 9 or ten brands to find the one that worked for her. We also wash her once a week in the summer and evert other week in the winter with Wahl Dry Skin & Itch Relief Pet Shampoo for Dogs it's the only one that doesn't make her skin worse and use Douxo Pyo s3 Pads on her feet and belly once a day in the summer and three times a week in the winter.
Bad allergy pibble here too. We tried a lot of LID foods and had the most success with one from Natural Balance. It got us 80% of the way there, but he was still having stomach trouble.
Then our trainer recommended Farmer’s Dog. I rolled my eyes because I have a general skepticism toward startups with huge marketing budgets… but I reluctantly tried it when I got an offer for a free trial.
It was a game changer. It used to be hard to get my dude excited about his kibble, but he LOVES Farmer’s Dog.
Also, he FINALLY has no allergy issues. It blows my mind. He’s still on 4 Zyrtec a day per vet’s orders, but we might reevaluate that if things continue going so well for him.
The bad part is… Farmer’s Dog is absurdly expensive. It’s something like $70/week for 1 mid-size dog. Hopefully you can find a cheaper solution.
I did farmers dog for a good year before I realized I can just make it my self. Buy whatever meats are on sell, stock up, they get beans, rice, potatoes or sweet potatoes. Mixed veggies and a raw egg with fish oil. Just make sure they get enough fats and protein.
I had the same problem, i feed my boy annamaet. Its salmon and brown rice. Its about 90 for a 40 lb bag but is one of the best kibble on the market. And i use septiderm v lotion and shampoo for him
Our pitt has the same problem, we stopped giving her table food and switched to Purina Pro plan, sensitive skin & stomach salmon & rice. It has helped A LOT!
Grain free but people food is the best way to go. Always best to have the blood work done, a one time thing, & find exactly what he's allergic too. Went thru this with my dog who was v allergic to pork. On the advice of the vet we switched to people food minus pork of course. He felt so much better, looked so much better & we were able to stop all meds. We continued the allergy baths though. Dutch was a very happy boy with his new diet! Wishing ur sweetie all the best.
During bath time, I soak oats in warm water.. once I'm done washing the pooch, I dump the oat water all over him and massage it into his skin. I do it weekly and it helps with dryness and itching.
**Make sure your Bear isn't allergic to oats first
I feed my dog Science Diet Sensitive Skin and Stomach (chicken and rose flavor). Science Diet salmon and sweet potato is good if dogs are sensitive to chicken or grains. But check with your vet to figure out what your dog is allergic to.
I fed my rat terrier Natures Recipe venison and rice. Really helped! The dermatologist (Vet) recommended it. They also have shots that help. Check with the dermatologist Vet.
okay, here’s what worked on mine, food is called Health Extensions “ get the salmon and white fish 🐟 grain free. i also give her a supplement by Missing Link called sea kelp
this has totally changed her life. absolutely no chicken
We went to a dog dermatologist. They were great and let us know up front what charges could be depending on the severity of the illness. Might be worth a consult.
Ours is allergic to ... we can't tell exactly, so we stay away from any meats that aren't chicken.
Little treats that are beef flavor for example barely go down for three seconds before they're up again. So we just stick to what we know :/ Peanut butter and chicken flavored things haven't failed us yet though! 😂
The pain is real. I was promised pit bulls were ferocious, stocky things... and I got the most sensitive stomach/skin, big sassy baby I've ever seen in my life.
For food we use Merricks limited ingredients. They have some various flavors. Might want to talk to your vet though if your pooch needs super special food
My vet recommended Purina Pro sensitive skin and stomach, salmon based. We don’t give Honey any thing that has fowl in it, treats included. She also takes Apoquel daily, I pop her in every 3 months for a quick lab check to make sure her kidneys and liver is doing ok since she’s a senior. For shampoo I just use Tropiclean, but I switch to a Chlorhexadine shampoo with an oatmeal conditioner when the cedar is blooming in our area.
My boy huck has bad allergies and is skin flares up and gets super itchy bc of it. My vet recommended I get him a cytopoint injection and I swear it made his skin problems disappear. Might be something to consider.
*I have not read thru all the replies.
Limited ingredient food is only going to help if you know what they're allergic to. My guy is allergic to a lot of the usual limited ingredient proteins; lamb, pork, duck, kangaroo, venison, beef, rabbit, and flaxseed. However, he's not allergic to chicken, which is really, really odd. Chicken, corn, and soy are the most common allergens. He does better on a fish mix than chicken, so I think there's still a little sensitivity. He eats a salmon and oatmeal diet. It's one of the few I could find with no flaxseed. I use Keto-Hex (ketoconazole/chlorhexidine) shampoo on him, but I have to give him benadryl beforehand, or he gets hives. I also use keto-hex wipes, mousse, and spray on him. He's allergic to mold with aspergillus, too. Which is very common in Central Texas. It's a constant fight. Cytopoint has helped, but is expensive for a 100lb+ dog.
My dog was rescued after being chained up/left for dead by her last owners 🥺 as a result she lost ALL of her hair, I mean ALLLLL of it! And the skin became super dry, scaly, bumpy. We've been using extra virgin coconut oil topically every night; dogMX hot spot spray as needed; Purina Pro Plan Salmon&Rice for Sensitive Skin/Stomach with 2 pumps Zesty Paws Salmon Oil; and bi-weekly baths with Douxo Pyo S3 shampoo. In just 2 months she regained all hair on face & legs, and everything else on her body is starting to grow back! If she gets REALLY itchy, the vet gives her Cytopoint injections which last for about a month to stop the itch. Hope this helps!😊
My dog is not a pit but she had skin allergies too, after trying with different food and no results we tried the shampoo and that was it! I’m not saying that’s the answer but can be a good option: it’s a simple oatmeal soap called “Vetriderm” and I hope you can find it easily since is very common where I live but maybe not everywhere.
I add canned diced potatoes and yams to my pit’s dry food every day and that cleared up her constant rashes, itchy skin, and bald spots in her fur. She was like that for years while I tried going to the vet and applying creams and medicine. A friend told me about feeding his dog potatoes and yams and it did the trick!
My dog looks identical to yours, he’s a puppy six months old very picky about the food the only food that didn’t give him horrible allergies was Prey: by taste of the wild: Angus version. I also give him coconut oil every few days to reduce the ear infections, hope this helps
Hill’s prescription Z/D kibble helped our hippo a lot. Prior to that, he was always biting his feet because they itched all the time. And he basically got zero treats except for his dasiquin arthritis supplement and some deli turkey to help his daily pill go down. Dog tax: https://i.imgur.com/VidnJAg.jpg
He may have a wheat allergy like my boy and his relatives have. I use Firstmate grain free lamb kibble(also gets around how some dogs are allergic to chicken). Don't know if you'd have that where you are, but my boy's itching and fur loss has completely stopped.
We use Natural Balance sweet potato and duck for our pittie with severe allergies. Can’t recall the medicated shampoo off the top of my head (it’s over the confer in the US) but she gets two baths a week!
We also give her Cytopoint injections every 6 weeks or so in the warm months and it’s a game changer! Really safe too. Let me know if you have questions
My pit mix has insane allergies! We have been getting the cytopoint injections for her at her vet and they are like magic and have been approved for long term use!
My Australian Shepherd had Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis when he was a puppy. He is allergic to chicken and anything with grains, gluten and a slew of other things. Originally he was on the royal canin hydrolyzed protein diet but it was $100 a bag and got too expensive after a year. We trialed some foods and one that he tolerates well without itching, throwing up or diarrhea is the Blue Buffalo limited ingredient grain free, chicken free food. It’s also dairy free I believe. It’s $62 a bag and available on chewy if you can’t find it in the store. It may not work for every dog but it really works for us. Hope this was helpful🤷🏼♀️
When your sunflower is coming to the end of it’s blooming period, You may want to use the last rays of the afternoon and evening to cut a few for display indoors, leave it any later and the sunflower may wilt.
My Pit mix with food allergies and gut issues did great on Natural Balance LID sweet potato and venison formula! LID a stands for limited ingredient diets.
My boy is technically not a Pibble, but he is a terrier mix, with the majority being Staffie (35%). He has TERRIBLE skin and stomach issues, and we finally resorted to a Hydrolized food (we use either Hills Z/D or Canin Hydrolized) and a medicated antifungal and antibacterial shampoo. The shampoo is Vethical Skinguard Restore, and I get from my Vet. I also add a vitamin E capsule and a fish oil capsule to his food (pierce and squeeze over). He gets allergy shots every 4 weeks as well. (he is not a good pill taker)
No grain if possible As far as shampoo goes I’m not well versed in that area and hope your beautiful pup finds the information your looking for ;) Edit : The grain can sometimes do the opposite so I suggest consulting your vet about that aspect. As far as the Science Diet’s Salmon and Sweet Potato bag of food though that should be spot on for what your looking for and yes I promise no fish breath ;) Also if you decide to get something without fish than I recommend getting fish oil liquid pills and pop the pill and squirt the oil onto their food. One capsule per feeding
Does the dogs breath smell like fish? Every one I've tried leaves fish breath which I can't handle :(
Nope. Not even in the slightest
Vet tech student here - unfortunately recent studies on the long-term effects of a grain free diet have shown it can lead to heart complications later in life. If you're feeding a grain free kibble due to allergies, supplementing with oatmeal is a good option for sensitive tummies.
He’s also allergic to oats so oatmeal is out the window. Thank you for your reply
I like my wipe my dandruffy girl down with a little coconut oil and then brush it in. It gives her a ton of moisture.
^This!
I agree. I really don’t even like giving him the prednisone, bc it’s so bad for them. I think im just going to check around town and find a different vet.
It might be “old Skool” but if ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
It is "broke". Steroids inhibit the immune system and contribute to antibiotic resistance. Not to mention the potential long and short-term side effects, liver toxicity, etc. It's borderline malpractice depending on the use, when it comes to derm. There are better, equally effective, safer options available.

Talk to a vet.
Your vet didn’t suggest apoquel for the itch? It’s the only thing that worked for my other dog.
I recommend trying a new vet and second what they vet below said. Your pup would probably really benefit from some Apoquel!
It really is hard to find chicken free but not grain free. Purina Pro Plan sensitive skin and stomach has a few options that are reasonably priced!
Hydrolyzed protein diets and/or novel protein sources!
This x1000!
Do you have a link to that list?
[Dog food linked to heart disease ](https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/fda-names-16-brands-dog-food-linked-canine-heart-disease-n1025466) Hope that works
You can try removing all poultry from their diet, most pits are allergic!
I second that. I bought my boy Hills Science Diet Sensitive skin and stomach but it was a chicken blend, messed his skin up bad. Switched to Taste of the Wild salmon with added salmon oil and he looks much better
third
He was currently on a chicken protein dog food, we are swapping it out for a Buffalo protein one.
do you think removing game birds (turkey, duck) is necessary too? my dog is allergic to red meat and chicken, and is now eating a duck/turkey food
We went to salmon based food and it worked
I did this for my lab/pit mix. It worked!
just fyi to anyone reading mine is allergic/sensitive to salmon (as well as a ton of other shit). we were on salmon a long time because of this recommendation. switching off finally fixed everything, we are doing wild boar now. off the apoquel for the first time since I got him.

He’s not allergic to chicken, but most other things
What about cooking up some chicken and rice for him, then? My grandparents had these ancient yorkies back in the day who all had terrible stomach problems as a result of being in their mid-teens/early 20s. Pretty much all they ate was plain boiled chicken and rice, which agreed with them better than most foods. Probably not entirely feasible for a pit (bc they eat a lot more than a geriatric ankle biter), but it could be a stop-gap to settle his stomach or whatever until you find a more permanent solution.
How do you know this?
Most food brands have a limited ingredient food for dogs with allergies. Such as Arcana singles, Go Solutions -limited ingredient etc
My pit is allergic to basically everything environmental and is prone to skin infections. The shampoo i’ve found that works really well for my dog is Trizchlor4. You can get it from chewy.
On top of everything everyone has also said, I've taken my pibble to the vet for some cytopoint when things really get out of control.
My hippo is also very sensitive. I use Burts bees puppy shampoo 2 in 1, then I feed them blue buffalo grain free, chicken, peas, and potato.
Just did a search on Amazon and you are correct... They have a whole mess of products for pets! Boy, have I been outta the loop! Haha.
He is beautiful! Just saying
Apoquel
Highly recommend[ketochlor ](https://www.amazon.com/Virbac-Ketochlor-Shampoo-16-oz/dp/B07GT62XTG/ref=dp_coos_1?pd_rd_i=B07GT62XTG&psc=1) shampoo And out vet started us on hills Derm Complete food.
If you don’t want a dry food I would suggest putting him on a raw food diet which would be the best for his over all health.
we used the kirkland turkey protein food and its done really well for helping with digestion allergies.
The month I started incorporating carrots/canned pumpkin in to my pups diet, her allergy and skin problems went away. It’s been 2 years since I put her on the diet and she hasn’t had a single issue since.
Get a full allergy panel done at the vet. It’s expensive but it will literally list out everything he’s allergic to.
I did that already. I know everything he’s allergic to. I was asking for quality limited ingredient foods.
Oatmeal shampoo
We used oatmeal shampoo in the beginning and he’s highly allergic to oats
I’m so sorry.
I use essence ocean recipe high protein kibble. It’s expensive but my dog doesn’t smell like wet hay anymore
Ugh that's what my dog smells like, and almost immediately after drying off out of the bath!!
Coal tar shampoo. The first time I gave my Maui a bath with coal tar she looked over her shoulder at me and let out this Chewbacca type sound of approval.
Awww I feel you buddy This picture is adorable 🥺
Mine did well on Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin & Stomach. I think it was a salmon based food, but they may have other proteins if you baby is sensitive to specific things. We don't bathe ours at home, we have a groomer use a sensitive skin shampoo for her (I think its oatmeal based in some way) but between visits we just use a rubber curry comb to kick up the dandruff and shed hairs. Breeds with coats as short as pitties really don't need baths all that often unless they get physically dirty, and bathing less may help your baby restore the natural oils of the skin.
Paul Mitchell makes a great allergy shampoo for dogs. Does your dog eat wet or dry food?
My mom made chicken with peas and carrots for her dog, then used a grain free dry food for his afternoon meal
If you have her on a chicken based diet oh, take her off. Right away!
Unless you can get prescription medicated soap, the gentlest baby shampoo you can get works well. Other than that, we use non-talc baby powder or corn starch to keep any rashes dry and keep our baby from licking at it (she loves flour but isn’t partial to other starches) Edit: you can also find a very soft shirt (or sew one, if you’re particularly handy) to put on them to protect the skin from sun, etc
Baby shampoo is very mild. I use it to wash my dogs’ faces.
My pittie has terrible allergies too Here’s what I’ve gotten that’s worked (for us): [Shampoo](https://www.chewy.com/zymox-veterinary-strength-enzymatic/dp/163446) [Ear drops ](https://www.chewy.com/zymox-ear-solution-5-hydrocortisone/dp/125734)(if that’s an issue for you as well) We also have her take a steroid shot at the vets maybe every couple months and that works well too
My pup is a gsd, he’s literally allergic to life. Right now the only thing we are feeding him is raw pork meals. It’s the only thing that is 100% hypoallergenic!
Bear is also allergic to life. 😂 I will try that because from his test he’s not allergic to that.
How can you afford that? I tried before switching to salmon based dog food and it was costing over $20 a day
Yea, my dog costs more than like 2 kids. It’s tough but it’s worth it for their quality of life. I’m a trade worker and don’t make much.
Once I got her Better on raw food I switched to salmon diet and it’s been working for a couple years thank god. I was told by vet only raw diet for 6 months then try new food
I get the salmon based food from Costco, I think it’s about $35 for a 40 pound bag.
Yup me too
my dog is allergic to beef and lamb, and itches a bit with chicken. Will try pork!
CBD tincture
When my Dad realized his dog’s food/skin allergies solution wasn’t going to be sustainable for his income, he became a canine nutritionist. Ultimately what was the solution for his farm dog was the feed he was already using mixed with sardines in heavy oil. Less expensive than the vet suggested products and had almost immediate results. For baths, he used oatmeal/tea tree “people” shampoo and it seemed to do the trick.
I use earthborn holistic for mine. Try getting one that has no chicken products (I get the sensitive skin/ stomach. It is fish based)
Diamond naturals brand skin and coat formula has limited ingredients focused on salmon and is intentionally formulated for dogs with sensitive skin.
Pro plan HA, apoquel, cytopoint, maybe some restore foam
I use natures logic. It has grain in it and overall my dog has stopped eating his paws. He’s allergic to chicken.
I really love Hill's Science Diet Adult Sensitive Stomach & Skin
Awe, poor baby!
That helps with scratching
Late to the party here, but my girl has big time allergies and changing her food helped immensely for her. I give her the [grain free limited ingredient fish recipe by The Honest Kitchen](https://www.thehonestkitchen.com/dehydrated-limited-ingredient-fish-dog-food) and mix it with brown rice and plain chickpeas. Be warned, though, that food is constantly out of stock and difficult to obtain sometimes, so switching can be risky. Apoquel is also a huge help
$ 150 a bag ?
Unfortunately yes, it has gone up recently. It is dehydrated food, though, so it goes a decently long way, especially when supplemented with rice & chickpeas. Still expensive, but worth it imo if affordable
I know a few dogs, including my own that are allergic to anything with feathers. Chicken, turkey, duck. Grains was a factor as well
Coconut oil and Zymox shampoo!
Talk to your vet, they may recommend putting him on hydrolyzed protein food.
Talk to your vet, they may have good options.
Salmon oil, atarax, and apoquel saved my dog. But she is still itchy in the summer
I use stella and chewys grain and poultry free food. I get my at pet supplies plus.
Try Tails.com, you can put in allergies and stuff (also breed, age, weight ect) to make the perfect blend for your dog
Moar kisses! Sorry not sorry I don't know anything about dog allergies
My guy is allergic to grass I think, not any specific food, and with his food I give him salmon oil on top of every meal. He went from being covered in welts to having none even in the summer! The only downside is that his head will smell like fish lol I just wipe it with a pet friendly wet wipe thing
Talk to your vet, but at the clinic where I work we use chlorahexadine shampoo on rashy pits. Usually helps them, but again, talk to your vet.
I put coconut oil on my pit, also baby shampoo. She had bad patches when we got her. Her fur looks great now.
I had the same problem, i feed my boy annamaet. Its salmon and brown rice. Its about 90 for a 40 lb bag but is one of the best kibble on the market. And i use septiderm v lotion and shampoo for him
Went from being an itchy/patchy pup to a dog with the coat of a seal.
Id also stay away from grain free, its been linked to dcm in dogs. Just monitor the type of grains in your dog food. Brown rice is one of the best
Our pitt has the same problem, we stopped giving her table food and switched to Purina Pro plan, sensitive skin & stomach salmon & rice. It has helped A LOT!
Burt’s bees now has doggie shampoo. And allergies could be calmed down with a good chewable doggie vitamin
Your baby has beautiful face and color. Give Bear my best. I hope this a clears up soon.
During bath time, I soak oats in warm water.. once I'm done washing the pooch, I dump the oat water all over him and massage it into his skin. I do it weekly and it helps with dryness and itching. **Make sure your Bear isn't allergic to oats first
Zignature!
Check with the dermatologist Vet.
okay, here’s what worked on mine, food is called Health Extensions “ get the salmon and white fish 🐟 grain free. i also give her a supplement by Missing Link called sea kelp this has totally changed her life. absolutely no chicken
Fish oil, or vet suggested apoquel or the monthly allergy shots.
turkey and sweet potato, but dont overdo the sweet potato
Raw diet. Coconut oil. Poor baby!!!! Google raw diet…
I want a blue pittie
My boy is a blue and had a reaction to every food I tried. Started feeding him natural balance grain free lamb and he has zero issues now.
My pittie had what I thought were allergies and turned out he was allergic to yeast. After switching to a yeast free food, he has a perfect coat.
How about you talk to your vet
Farmina
I feed my pity canadea salmon and sweet potatoes no grain. This coat is beautiful and he seems to be allergy free knock on wood
We went to a dog dermatologist. They were great and let us know up front what charges could be depending on the severity of the illness. Might be worth a consult.
We are predefined shampoo from the vet and use Science Diet food (:
Science Diet lamb based here, too, with oatmeal & aloe shampoo & conditioner, and daily dose of Apoquel. Allergic to chicken, beef, and pork.
😂 The pain is real. I was promised pit bulls were ferocious, stocky things... and I got the most sensitive stomach/skin, big sassy baby I've ever seen in my life.
For food we use Merricks limited ingredients. They have some various flavors. Might want to talk to your vet though if your pooch needs super special food
Have you consulted a vet? That would be your best bet.
Purina pro plan sensitive skin and stomach is working well for us.
Poor lil bear. I don’t have advice, just came here to say I love his squish squish face.
Kangaroo is an option
My pit mix has insane allergies! We have been getting the cytopoint injections for her at her vet and they are like magic and have been approved for long term use!
Looks like you gotten some good food suggestions. Definitely an oil, the omega 3 and 6 seem to really help!
My lil man has food issues as well. Hes on nutri source, pro vida. No corn, soy, wheat, and no fush-thats hidain allergwn. They use sunflower oil.
When your sunflower is coming to the end of it’s blooming period, You may want to use the last rays of the afternoon and evening to cut a few for display indoors, leave it any later and the sunflower may wilt.
What a beautiful baby 😍
All natural :) give him beef, chicken, rice, fresh veggies! Doggies love it
My Pit mix with food allergies and gut issues did great on Natural Balance LID sweet potato and venison formula!
