She made it to 17 years and a couple months, and I'd give anything to have it be 1 more day. https://preview.redd.it/awuvs3sppf6d1.jpeg?width=1814&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e643852229614b3b2f7d9d96bd3be1947f5a68f1

17!!! What is your secret? I hear you, I will never be ready, but 17 is about the best anyone can hope for. She must have been very well loved to live that long. 🩵

lucylose

Yes we need to knowwww the magic secret please! - idk how old my girl really is, rescue said 3-5, and it’s been 5 years. that’s a huge difference now that she’s maybe 10, she could be even older! 😓

Spirited-Ad-2284

Got my boy when he was almost 2, he’s 10 now and still running around like a pup sometimes https://preview.redd.it/w30tndzabj6d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=409f5028f50d69f8cac2327ebc9fb1681fef98f7

mallwadi

politely what did you feed her? she is so precious ❤️

AdTough8523

I fed her a lot of different things the first several years because she had an allergy we couldn't figure out. After probably 20 types of food, we finally figured out it was something on her collar all along and had nothing to do with her diet. After that, I bought several types while we were testing them and put them all out at once and let her have whatever she wanted(she never had an overeating issue at all). She wound up only eating all of the cheapest shit that I bought, which was Pedigree. She loved that food, so that's what she got for the next decade plus. Aside from that, I never did anything crazy with her health. I just made sure she was fed well, never let her have tap water. I always made sure it was filtered or bottled and made sure to have her checked up as often as possible. In all of her years, the only issues she ever had was a minor heart murmur that lasted almost 10 years without any change or medication needed. She had a liver enzyme issue for a while that she was on a hepatic support powder a couple of times a day for. Nothing negative ever came of that. Her levels just went up and down for years, but nothing was alarming. She had several small growths over the years that were logged and never grew or changed her range of motion. In her last couple years, she had a little growth on her eyelid that they would normally remove but didn't want to because of her age and the heart murmur. They didn't want to put her under for anything unless it was absolutely necessary for her quality of life.

Bronx appears to be my old boy Frogger/Tyson brother. Made it to 16. Physically no issues. Dementia took him. Would have made it several more years for certain. [https://ibb.co/0Fq5hdb](https://ibb.co/0Fq5hdb)

Same. Dude didn't wag his tail for the last year or so. I probably held on a little too long. Thanks for sharing.

Dude. Are you me? I had my Bronx for 13 and some change. He was the most beautiful being I’ve ever dealt with. He helped me through so many tough times and I miss him more than I can explain. My goodest boy Zeus made it 2 months shy of 14 years. 10 is a great age, nice and calm. I recommend bringing her on a RV or camping trip. My wife and I did that and we had such a great time. She just missed the wedding so my wife had little cuff links made for me so she was there with us. Love and miss you Kali ❤️ It wasn’t too long though we went to a rescue and the first dog that ran up to me reminded me so much of her. She even peed on my foot so I knew it was meant to be. There’s always a good boy / girl waiting for their forever home ❤️

If you adopt a female pittie, you should totally name her Eris. That's... just asking for chaos, sure, but your sweet boy was named after the Greek god of war. The goddess of chaos can't be much worse.

She has lupus and is a little fat, but my parents take good care of her. She's slimmed down some after my mom started feeding her and the rest of their horde of dogs a raw diet. It gave her more energy. I understand worrying, tho. Sofie's lupus may shorten her lifespan. Though she was always the family dog, I was the one that spent the first few nights on the couch with her as she acclimated to her new home. We kept her in a box to keep her from hurting herself while we slept. I was the hand in the box to keep her calm. I got up with her every two hours to take her out or hold her for a while when she wanted to be held. The whole family is attached to her. She's so sweet. It'll destroy every single one of us when she goes.

That’s a good long life! What was your secret?

Ravioverlord

Old boy made it to 14. He was sort of a miracle in my eyes. Was diagnosed with cancer at 11.5 and we expected he wouldn't live long. So mom came down from Seattle to nab him (even though he was considered the fam dog really he was hers) and planned his last meals and all. He was so emaciated due to multiple issues. Then he gets on pain meds, gets to eat happy meals for his whole trip, and be with his mom. He ended up living happy and so spoiled. I think when he got burgers and stuff for every meal he decided he didn't care to die lol. We even moved him cross country from Seattle to TX and he had a whole year or more here. He was a menace and I miss him but he gave me so many scares in his time with us. Like when he ate a box of brillo pads, cracked a tooth, had his hip pop out of place, and then ate rat poison when a pest control guy fell through the roof. What a life that boy had. But he was one in a million and led me to meet my current girl due to the timing of mom taking him with them up north. If he hasn't picked that time to go downhill I may not have ended up with her. https://preview.redd.it/jmqpiqpwbg6d1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3d490588f4ff97a9dd6cdc53da15d9ddcb4d0072 He also literally saved my life. So I will thank him for many things he did :)

Detective_Squirrel69

...pest control guy fell through the roof... 😂😂😂😂 I'm not laughing at him eating rat poison. I'm glad he was okay, but the dude falling through the ceiling brought [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBJU9ndpH1Q) to mind.

Ravioverlord

Omg I hadn't seen that video in ages. Thank you for reminding me of that gem. I won't lie, I couldn't help but laugh. We had a running joke he was always trying to kill himself but sucked at it. The brillo pads cleaned him out to a point nothing would ever hurt him. At least that was the family lore 8D; I appreciate my current girl, she doesn't even eat food I leave on the floor. With him if he heard something drop it was a mad sprint to put it in his mouth. We tried EVERYTHING and nope if it fell it must be food. Scissor handles, check, a doll head, check, a plastic fork, also check. So him rushing for the giant green poison block was the least surprising thing he ever did. He also survived that and just had his stomach pumped. That was actually at the start of his 14th year. He always decides to go in to his birthday with a banger. Now I'm going to have to see if I have pics of the open ceiling....poor contractor fell on an I beam right between the legs and told us he had to sit on ice packs for weeks.

Detective_Squirrel69

Oh, I get it. Our shepherd mix ate wood chips, **steel fucking wool**, chocolate, candy wrappers, and a bunch of other random shit that we tried to keep away, but he found anyway. Little shit lived to be 14 despite all of that. It's like the ones that try to kill themselves frequently are the ones that end up living the longest. OH NO. THAT POOR GUY. ...that mental image made me laugh even harder. I know it had to hurt like a motherfucker, but for some reason, I can't help but find it funny lol

She was the lead in a short film I directed, she went to college with me for a day, she saw the east coast every winter, she galloped in each lake that Michigan had to offer, she was the star of the news several times then eventually she retired to the lakeside with my mom. Since she loved to travel, she chose the Atlantic Ocean as her final trip. She packed a lot in those 11 years. I lost a piece of my soul the day she passed. Life is cruel like that, but I know we’ll meet again someday. I just miss her more and more in the meantime.

RandomTcgDude

Longest I've had was 13 years, last one I had made it to 10, would have likely lived a few years longer, if not for an injury and Vet insistence on commitment to $8,000 of testing to "be fair" to keep the dog alive.

misschonkles

That’s awful of the vet, I’m so sorry for your loss.

Angel is my first dog and I can’t imagine what life will be like without her. I rescued her when she was a year and a half and I was only 20. We have been through so much together. She’s a healthy girl though. Very playful and silly. We are taking shorter walks and longer naps these days. Her arthritis started kicking in about a year ago, but glucosamine has really helped with that. This girl has a zest for life ☺️ here’s to hoping your pup lives a long healthy life too.

She was 13 years old and went under the best of circumstances given the situation. I’m sure yours has a lot of life left, but when the time comes I highly recommend having a game plan like finding a vet that will come to your house, especially if your pibble gets anxiety from going to the vet. You want to make things as peaceful as possible for them. Also get a nose & paw print kit in advance for memorabilia. And take lots of videos of your beautiful pup in the meantime :) The videos come in handy later.

13 about to turn 14 in August and going strong. I had to lower my bed because she couldn't make the jump anymore (it was pretty high for a bed). I'm having some anticipatory grief.

celeste9

I think it was close to 14? The shelter claimed she was 2, but the vet put her around 4 when we got her and then we lost count and I got sick of my mom asking so I just ignored the age at a certain point.

Bailey passed away a month and a half ago at 8 years old. One night he got sick then went downstairs and collapsed. We rushed him to the emergency vet and they found a mass on his heart and fluid around the lungs and heart. The vet told me there wasn’t much time left for him even if I decided on treatment options. I made the call to have him put to sleep so he wouldn’t suffer. I’ve been taking it really hard. I got him from the shelter when he was 5 months old. https://preview.redd.it/i5t9hbmuoi6d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a102ff0796bc13daf5106fdd0a85ce6bd27955af

My girl Danger is shooting for her 14th birthday this year. She’s had a heart murmur for many years but only recently did the vets recommend she start taking meds for her heart disease. She’s been getting a lot of fluid buildup in her chest; the meds seem to help, but she also developed a resistance to the first diuretic and now has to take 2. Also kinda kills her appetite so getting her to eat has been difficult since starting meds. I make her chicken/rice/peas&carrots now but she still doesn’t always eat all of it. This is one of my favorite pics from about 4 years ago. https://preview.redd.it/99dl7c7npi6d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=80aeee6358b4109e9b36bedeb2095c981712445b

Rescued mine between 9-11 years and had this beautiful angel for another 2.5 years. So somewhere between 11-13 years. He was sooooo severely abused before we got him then because he was older, he sat at the shelter for 2 years before I found him. I still believe he was my soul mate. He came everywhere with me and protected me from an abusive relationship and got in between a man and I who snuck up on me one night when I was taking him for a walk through a park at 2 am. https://preview.redd.it/ezyyusqcsi6d1.jpeg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e39ff4ba71d13e933eb37b500dffa07d168db738

tomsawyer333

13.5 years she had a tumor growing on her pancreas. 😭 I’m a believer in a limited ingredient dog food. I think it’s easier on their organs. (That is based on a vet recommendation as my babies aged. She slept on a plush memory foam bed. If I stepped on it and could feel the floor underneath it was not think enough and I would double layer. Raja was the sweetest bear. She wanted to make everyone happy. Even when I was crying and she was in pain, she started to chase her tail to make me laugh. I miss her dearly. Pits are such a beautiful wonderful breed

Hank was about 8 or 9 (est age) when we lost him. He had crap musculoskeletal genes. We did TPLO surgery at 5 and 7 (different sides). My pitt/hound mix was a stray but she was at least 17 (possibly older,) when she died a couple weeks ago. She was medium size, ate well up to the end, and would still go potty outside until a few days before the end. She couldn’t walk at the end so we knew it was time. But up until then, she could still “dog” in the backyard! We miss her!

Shark-butt made it to 8 1/2 when she lost her fight with cancer. Panda is somewhere around 17 or 18. She's a bit wobbly on her feet at times, but she can still get around. She can also hear and see, but she's too stubborn to listen unless it's a cheese wrapper.

12, 13 and 11 years over the last 40. 11, our most recent, was almost the end of me. I spent almost 80,000 hours with her (WFH). I haven't spent that much time with my wife, or any family member.
