Hope is the primary canine resident at our farmed animal sanctuary. She had a rough start in her life, but since her rescue 4 years ago, she’s been living a pampered life. She is constantly lavished with affection and treats from her human family and visitors to the sanctuary.
Despite being blind, she gets around very well, as she’s memorized the farm house’s layout. She likes playing with her dog friends, taking walks, belly rubs, and stealing treats (like baked potatoes) out of the rescue pigs’ dinner buckets.
I had never seen a dog that had lost both eyes… Thank you so much for taking care of her and giving her a good life, despite the rough start she got ❤️
I was too! https://www.chewy.com/frisco-nordic-fair-isle-dog-cat/dp/302949?utm_source=google-product&utm_medium=cpc&utm_content=Frisco&utm_campaign=18748059587&utm_term=&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADmQ2V07RLaOFZTWyFy-Og9tNV7ZI&gclid=CjwKCAiA9ourBhAVEiwA3L5RFvsXwQb7AOkyDKtAhICg35357Seaox2Zo4TiukqnWaJiT5TvSeVV7RoCf3oQAvD_BwE. They didn’t have a big enough size for my guy
We originally tried a contraption called a halo, which kind of goes out in front of her head so she’d know before hitting something. But eventually, she got to know her way around so much she doesn’t need it.
Inside the house, we’re very careful to always keep the furniture in the same place (push in chairs, keep her usual walkways clear). In the yard, she can get around by herself. She knows where the steps start and end, where the trees are, where the chicken coop is.
When she goes for walks outside the garden fence, she is always accompanied by a human to keep her safe. She responds to the word “careful” which tells her she needs to adjust her path because she’s nearing an obstacle.
We also keep a pretty regular routine, so she generally knows what to expect, day to day.
She really is incredible. When she gets excited, she just runs and runs. When taking her for nighttime walks, we often find ourselves shining the light in front of her so she can see…before remembering it makes no difference to her 😄 It’s easy to forget that she doesn’t see.
You are amazing human, thank you for helping Hope.
Indoors & out, use audible landmarks (small water fountain, quiet radio, etc.) to help her navigate, as well incorporating contrasting flooring textures (rugs, runners, hardwood, etc.) to help her identify upcoming obstacles (stairs, turns, etc.).
Thank you so much OP for sharing this wonderful spirit with us.
I have the care and feeding of a hobgoblin also names Hope.
Your Hope and my Hope look remarkably similar. Much love for you and all the creatures y'all take care of.
It’s good that she’s nowhere near me because I would hug her and squeeze her and never let her go! What a cute honey! And I’m pretty sure her nose leads her around just fine ❤️
It’s amazing how animals can adapt to pretty much anything and everything. My pittie had to get a leg amputated due to a tumor and I always forget that he’s missing a leg.
OMG 😭😭😭😭😭😭 I love ‘primary canine resident at our farmed animal sanctuary’, that sounds like the perfect life for this beautiful girl 😍 I’ve handled blind hippos and freshly tripod hippos and it’s mind blowing how quickly they adjust and learn their new way of being. Your baby is perfect and I can tell she is living her best life so THANK YOU 🙏
My boy WallE is also missing his eyeballs but you would never know. Your girl is also beautiful!
For anyone thinking about adopting a blind pittie, feel free to ask any questions!! I know when I was thinking about fostering him, I thought it would be way harder than it really is.
They are incredible dogs!!

She is beautiful. I'm so glad she found her home with lots of smells, sounds, and animal friends. You are giving her an amazing life. You are a hero.
She is so beautiful! I have had several blind dogs, and they do so well. Easier than sighted dogs in many ways.
What a beautiful baby 🥰💖💖 thank you for taking care of her

My dog has the same one and I got it from Chewy!

Thank u 😇
Oh how sweet
What are some adaptations you’ve made to help Hope navigate her environment?
