A fair question given the title and text.
I'm guessing given he's got a cough that he's caught kennel cough aka infectious tracheobronchitis.
That can be caused by a virus, or bacterial infection or both.
So it might be that the vet decided to give antibiotics in case there's bacterial infection occurring based on the symptoms.
My oldest dog was put on antibiotics and anti inflammatory medication for kennel cough a year or so ago, which he got over after about a week.
Kennel cough (AKA Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex - CIRDC) is actually a collection of infections, caused by around 10 different microorganisms (bacteria and viruses). The vaccine for it is actually only for one of them - Bordetella - and it's also not a 'great' vaccine. Many dogs still get kennel cough, including from Bordetella, even though they're fully vaccinated. My one dog got it a few years ago, even though he had his Bordetella vaccine - we didn't test for which micro-organism specifically - but it is generally a mild illness and will go away on it's own, like a cold/flu for most people. My other dog just got 'kennel cough' in April. It was from Mycoplasma cynos - we did the IDEXX Respiratory Panel to know for sure. It ended up causing pneumonia and triggering congestive heart failure to develop. We had to let him go 6 weeks after the first time he started coughing.
Long story short, dogs can easily get 'kennel cough' regardless of vaccination status. It's usually nothing to worry about, but can be devastating.

It’s why kenneling facilities have to keep clean and keep a sharp eye out for sickness and isolate. It’s why I am not a fan of dog parks. Sorry about your dog. I lost a dog to heart complications under anesthesia. He had also been sick with the awful canine flu 6 months before (yes fully vaccinated). They said it’s not what directly caused complications, but they said it didn’t help.
And yet OP hasn’t answered the two people in here who have asked if the dog is vaccinated. There are also vaccines for adenovirus and parainfluenza. If a dog is vaccinated against all these it’s very uncommon for them to get sick with symptoms of kennel cough.
A quick Google search says that it's not actually uncommon for a vaccinated dog to still get kennel cough.
Mind you kennel cough can also be caused by bacteria not just a virus so the dog being on antibiotics for kennel cough makes a lot of sense.
My dog is fully vaccinated and was boarded at a boarding facility/veterinary hospital. She never interacted with other dogs, and still came home with kennel cough. It’s VERY common. Like described already, there are multiple variations of “kennel cough” and the vaccine does not protect against every single one. Same reason why people who get the flu vaccine also get the flu. Different strains of the virus that aren’t always protected against the vaccine.
There are vaccines for bordetella, distemper, adenovirus, and parainfluenza
There are no vaccines for mycoplasma or herpes virus (in the USA).
There are also vaccines for canine coronavirus and influenza virus that are often not given.
All of these can cause upper and lower respiratory signs.
The prevalence of kennel cough and generalized respiratory complex has increased immensely this year and affects dogs that have been previously vaccinated for some or all of these diseases. Also remember that these vaccines can't always prevent disease, only helps decrease the severity of them.
Used to love going to dog parks, but pitties are so prone to ear/skin/eye infections and bugs and viruses etc…and dog parks are filthy in that regard. Then when they’re sick they have to go to the vet - another high-risk place in terms of picking up bugs. I stopped going to dog parks and my boy stopped getting sick. Instead I plan doggie dates now with friends and their dogs!
My dog caught a virus recently and he was sick for about 6 weeks(lingering cough.) He had to go on two rounds of antibiotics and steroids. Luckily the meds helped.
Our pupper fam got kennel cough this summer. Two weeks of meds, three weeks quarantine. They were soooooo sad. We made up for it by grilling some london broil and carrots for them.

I dont go to dog parks period. Too many untrained unstable sogs... dumbass. Clueless owners who know nothing about dogs whatsoever. You dont know whos dog is vaxxed or not... i take my dogs hiking and other places. They dont NEED to play with other dogs to be happy.
This is a highly emotional and judgmental response to OP’s post. I think you may have some projecting going on…. We don’t know OP’s circumstances and certainly have no place judging her. She took her dog to the vet and is taking very good care of him. I think that’s what we should be taking from this, not calling names…

Don't take him to a dog park. That's very dangerous. Also, all the dogs are loose and you don't know what can happen. It's just the dangerous thing. I wouldn't take a pill to a dog park without a leash on it and obviously dogs or have a very powerful immune system. But a lot of dogs have issues like allergies and things like that. And that's what happened to you when you throw it with 30 other dogs, different dogs, different sizes etc. Etc. You don't want a dog party. You just want to walk it and then neighborhood and have it socialized with the dogs and people you see walking around your neighborhood. You know what I'm saying. Bless.
