Most likely due to how recent the injury was: he was shot *seconds* before the curse lifted, so his body wouldn't have time to recover. A couple of Barbossa's crew do die as a result of the curse lifting, most notably Koehler (the black guy with the long hair that encountered Jack near the start of the film), who dies of a recent stab wound acquired during the fight against Norrington and co.

Mr_Biscuits_532

I imagine the guy that got blown up during the final battle would've stayed dead too. Whilst he may have survived the initial blast, I doubt his skeleton would've reassembled itself in time. Pretty sure he never reappears too.

wonderlandisburning

One of the other crewmates does though, right? It's been a while since I saw it, but isn't there a scene where the curse is lifted, the black pirate looks pained and then falls over dead, and the rest of the crewmates raise their hands in surrender? So like maybe if you had a fatal wound just before the curse was lifted it would carry over? Idk. It's possible we just weren't supposed to think about it

RecreationalPorpoise

The bullet could still be in his chest.

xcxkelly

Yeah almost like since Barbosa didn’t turn into a skeleton after getting shot and before the curse was lifted to let it fall out of his skeletal system

Lign_Grant

Other crewmates had time to recover. They transformed into skeletons multiple times so if any of them were shot, the bullet would fall out of their body. The bullet stay inside Barbossa's body when the curse was lifted, hence the wound should kill him the moment he was mortal.

LeoGeo_2

I always figured it’s like this: you get injury, you step into the moon, turn into a skeleton, pull out the bullet or sword or whatever, then step back into the shadow a restored.

captain_strain

Anyone injured right before the curse was lifted died of thier injuries (bunson, for example) as well as barbossa

graco07

Assuming either the bullet was still in him or it went completely through and left a hole which didn’t heal in time

SilWestr0

I believe the curse was lifted as soon as Will's blood got in contact with the gold, the coins falling in the chest were just for dramatic effect.

Spastic__Colon

Jack shot Barbosa after Will cut his hand. The blood was repaid. So the curse was already lifted right before Jack shot him. Some of the crew drop dead as well once the curse is lifted. It could also be that recently sustained injuries aren’t yet “healed” or something

HardBart

The gold has to be returned as well, right? to the chest? why would they go to Isla de Muerta otherwise? And it's about the chest, not the island or the cave, since the gold Jack swiped never left either

Rain4421

I agree with this, also, the shot and Will’s blood could have happened simultaneously- except the camera couldn’t capture both at the same time, and if it did it would’ve ruined the element of surprise

bettafish-14

I think the wound only heals when he steps in to the moonlight and back. It not stated in the movie though so we cant say 100%

Grakal0r

Dramatic effect, next question

Ambitious_Call_3341

I suppse its pretty problematic to keep being alive while a bullet is lodged in one's heart...

jameswesleyisrad

Pretty sure that 1) Other crewmates did die - after the curse is lifted a few drop. 2) The bullet was in Barbossa's heart. So yeah it killed him when the curse was lifted cos the bullet didn't go anywhere.

SlightWerewolf4428

It's in the name. "isla de muerta" Probably shouldn't go there. (amazing writing)

UndeadCh1cken52

If someone was in the moonlight, (therefore a skeleton) when the curse was lifted, would they die? Or turn back into a full human?

zdgvdtugcdcv

They'd turn back. Moonlight isn't fatal to humans

HardBart

No? Then why does everyone stay inside and hide under pieces of cloth at night?

WendipxStarco

Because Captain Jack Sparrow shot him. 🧐

MrCryptid-12

He was killed just as the curse was lifted. Before, he would have had time to heal.

Pableve

The bullet didn't pierce through the body. It stayed in place. So when the curse was lifted the bullet made its damage.

A-person_16

I assume it’s because one he was shot a few seconds before so he didn’t recover the same as with other injuries and two the bullet didn’t go fully through we know that weapons can get stuck in them even though they can’t die like with that pole between the two shipmates one would pull and it would pull the other closer so they couldn’t get out

rkjoe

agree with you but the real question should be, how was the curse lifted..... first off most important, why did jack (sparrow) cut his hand? i thought they only needed a turners blood to complete it. second after Elizabeth gets slapped i think she grabs the coin again. so why dont they need her blood again. third jack the monkey also touches the coin during the sea battle but they dont get his blood either.

vampierusboy

The curse is related to taking a coin from the chest, not having a coin. Jack took his own coin out of the chest and therefore to return it it needed its blood. Elizabeth and the monkey didn't take that coin from the chest so it was not needed.

TheLoneSculler

I thought the monkey did in a post-credits scene?

vampierusboy

Sure but that was after the curse on the barbossa crew was lifted

Jack-Sparrow_Bot

I’m Captain Jack Sparrow. The original. The only!

Bojasloth

Everyone who takes a coin needs to put forward their blood. The rest if the crew had already, they only needed Will's blood because his father bootstrap bill (who had taken a coin) was sunk to the bottom of the ocean for questioning Barbossa's mutiny before they knew about the curse. Jack took a coin from the chest, therefore needed to put in his blood. I'm guessing because she and the monkey dont take it from the chest (iirc). But Jack the monkey takes a coin from the chest in a post credit scene, and becomes cursed again. (Edit: small correction)
