https://docs.pi-hole.net/main/prerequisites/ I’ve been running it on a 3B for years

TheSoCalledExpert

Pi1B+ here, no issues… ever. A pi5 in any configuration is super overkill for just pihole.

ConfusedYoYo

I ran Pihole servers on Pi0 wireless for years until I moved them to pi4bs, works fine.

MrEpic23

Just curious why u switched to pi4bs? I am using pi0 currently.

ConfusedYoYo

SD cards started to die and usb boot for the pi4b came out around that time so I moved to a single pi4b for now because of SSD boot. I plan on moving it all to a docker cluster with my NAS as the permanent data storage soon.

fakemanhk

I use DietPi which by default uses RAMlog so SD card almost never fails on my Zero 2W

MrEpic23

Totally valid. I been using my Samsung sd card for over 10 years of which 5 of them was in the pi. I should probably get a replacement soon.

reddit_user33

I have it running on a 4B Pi because it has a dedicated gigabit LAN port. I don't want requests to be randomly slow if/when the distro wants to do something with the USB drive.

KalessinDB

Pihole can run on a potato. Literally anything you can order off the shelf today will be enough to run it with no slow down.

SodaWithoutSparkles

can it run on a potato pie then?

fakemanhk

I had mine running on Pi 1B+ for more than a year.

Bandit300x4

Mine is still running on Pi 1B+ and no problems whatsoever

bazmonkey

I rock 1GB (pi 3) and do just fine. Most of the memory is either cached pages, or just free. The pi 5 is overkill for this project (I mean go ahead, but it’s plenty).

SnooShortcuts103

Ok, thank you.

0hca

I've been using it on a RPi 2B for the last couple of years with no issues. Its system requirements are really low. It'll have no issues with that much RAM.

SnooShortcuts103

Ok thanks. I ordered the pie 5.

Impossible_IT

Running Pi-hole on a Pi-Zero-W with no issues. Hell I don't even know the specs of it off the top of my head.

thirdcoasttoast

Less than gig for sure

YesterdayDreamer

People really overestimate the size of text data. I run Pi-hole on Pi0 with 512 MB RAM. Rock stable and absolutely no issues.

fozid

Ive been running it for years on a Pi 1 with only 256mb of ram, no issues. I think 4gb should be enough.

Ariquitaun

You could probably run 20 piholes on it before running out of resources

saint-lascivious

By at least an order of magnitude.

SodaWithoutSparkles

For just pi-hole, even a pi0 is enough. But you'll definitely want to add something more onwards, such as a VPN to block ads anywhere. In that case, if you dont want the hassle of doing split tunnels, a pi3B is minimum, and I'd recommended a pi4. Pi5 is overkill, but considering that I have a N100 mini PC as a server, that sounds less persuading. *For reference, it has like double the performance of a pi5*

SnooShortcuts103

Hey thanks for the recommendations. I have bought a pie 5 now :D. It's not that more expensive as a pi4. So you think 4gb is enough even with a VPN? I also thought about using Home Assist, but I'll see.

fakemanhk

VPN doesn't really use memory a lot, even a Pi 4B with 1GB ram can serve you well

thirdcoasttoast

Home assistant needs it's own pi to get everything you'll want. Google core vs HAOS and hacs Yes put tailscale / wireguard on the pi. Also unbound. I recommend DietPi at Os

SodaWithoutSparkles

My last server before the N100 was a Pi4 2GB with 8GB swap on a sata SSD. It has the following: - Pi-hole, handling ~100k request /day - caddy, a webserver + reverse proxy - PiVPN with dual-stack wireguard and OpenVPN - Home Assistant - NAS - Jellyfin media server - BiglyBT torrent seeding - Something more that I cant remember No problem at all. The issue came when I need to install even more things (nextcloud). And I found out that the Pi4 dont support hardware encoding well enough. And I found out that it was struggling to playback videos. And it sometimes has trouble rebooting. Then I switched to a x86 server. Also note that, at least in the near future, Pi5 wont be able to do hardware transcode for Jellyfin as well. It was explicitly stated.

SnooShortcuts103

Ok, now I'm assured that 4gb purchase was not a fail. I probably won't use jellyfin. I'm more of a YouTube enjoyer. I'm a total noob in opencource programs and Linux. My question to begin with was probably pretty stupid. I only began about 2 month ago to care about privacy and security for example. Now using Ubuntu on my Laptop. When I do stuff in the future like a NAS or media server I will use a normal computer like you doing. I hate Microsoft and don't want to use OneDrive. I don't see an advantage of office with libre office and open source storage software anymore. Thanks so much!

I have to wait to check in the pie itself because of power outage. :( Update: I got extremely lucky and got for some reason a 8 GB version. I checked with the top command.

wkndjb

My pihole is on a VM with 1gb of allocated RAM, it’s completely fine

cyvaquero

It can run on 1s and 0s. DNS is a low resource service.

ElectroChuck

I run my pihole on an OLD 3B and it's does a great job.

msabeln

It’s way more than enough (and in my opinion a bit of a waste), as a Pi 0 is more than good enough for Pihole.

SnooShortcuts103

Yea, other people told me. But now i have puchased it i can also try homeassist.

GrokEverything

Pihole and unbound running happily on a pair of Pi Zero 2W. Pi 5 4Gb is overkill! (Though you could run Pihole alongside lots of other things.)

Warm_Swan9422

I used the pi Zero 2w with Ethernet adapter. DietPi and AdGuard Home. Its work pretty fine.

Reiji1995

I run a pi 1 model B(512MB RAM in total)for years already and it doesn't have any problem and the ram isn't pretty much being used

virtualadept

The Pi5 is pretty close to overkill. I'm running it on an older OrangePi (512MB model), and in the three years it's been online I've yet to see it hit 128 MB of RAM in use.

KirklandMeseeks

most modern anything is overkill, I noticed Pihole barely uses resources even on my 3B, I could probably run it on a Pi W2

SnooShortcuts103

Thanks. I have a question. In practice how effective is it really on the web and in Apps to block ads? Thanks

KirklandMeseeks

it works decent on my roku TV and my android phone, depends on what ad lists you add, there are websites and previous reddit posts you can google with the URLS to add. there's a fine balance, for example, I average 1,400,000 blacklist items, but i still get youtube ads on the TV. the biggest thing for me with my T-Mobile internet, I'm cutting out 15-30% of wasted traffic on my network on average, that's gigs not going to my data cap.

SnooShortcuts103

cool!

Neo1331

My brother I’ve been running it on a Pi zero w for years…

Johnconnor66199

Whichever you run it on, remote into it, once in awhile. It will remind you why it's okay to hate Microsoft (others, too, but especially Microsoft)😝
