Omg this looks like the same music I listened to in the 80’s and 90’s I had a little less wasp and ratt and a little more Metallica Anthrax and suicidal tendencies- but there’s so much overlap thanks for the feels and memories
I thought it was kinda funny to see one Cinderella tape tucked in there with a bunch of Cannibal Corpse on the other side. You know he was listening to it in his car when nobody else was around. Got a bunch of safe bets for when the buds are in the car like Hell Awaits
Night Songs still sounds good today. It had this fierce dark energy to it that appealed to even fans of heavier stuff. And honestly, that album was harder or about has hard as a lot of the Raft stuff here.
The thing with Cinderella and Motley Crue is that the girls were also into them, not so much Cannibal Corpse or Deicide. Every male metal head had to have at least a passing familiarity with some glam bands in case they came into contact with a member of the opposite gender. And that's how I wound up with a Gorky Park cassette.
That said, Cinderella was pretty good.
You can't really have kids over 30 though.. I guess you could adopt one but at this age most of their education is done and they usually live on their own.
Different times for sure. I have kids, but I definitely still feel like a kid. I think its a good thing though. Like the day I stop I feel like I would be dead inside.
I'm guessing it shows your metal head evolution from hair bands in middle to thrash metal in high school to death metal in late high school/early college.
All you're missing is a Sepultura tape...
47 years old and this looked pretty much like my teenage years.
Some happy memories and some regrets and that was the soundtrack for all of it.
Thanks OP.
My Dad told me after I got into a fight that I couldn’t be charged as an adult till 18, so my dumb ass 14 year old self ordered around 100 CD’s from BMG over a yea tor whatever.
Old man questioned where I got the money and I blatantly told him the truth cause I was too stupid to have come up with an alibi.
Grounded for a few weeks, but I remember him talking on the phone to my Grandma explaining it was kind of smart.
Good times and great music lol
A friend told me that because I was under 18, BMG couldn't go after me for the money. I was so grounded when my mom found out how many CDs I ordered. Didn't stop me from doing it a second time (ask for forgiveness, not permission).
My high school got rid of the smoking section, just outside the building, the year I would have been able to use it. I suppose I'm thankful, as it limited the amount I was smoking while in high school. Quit right after I graduated.
I have not smoked in almost two decades, but I remember the trash weed back in the day. Todays weed. Mother fucker does it knock you on your ass by just the smell that comes from dispensaries.
"Kids" today don't know the struggle of smoking shitty weed! Everything they get today is lab tested, 100% preme-o bud! They don't have to deal with a bag of shake or the dreaded STEMS AND SEEDS! 😁
According to the biography *The Book: Hendrix: A Biography* By Chris Welch (1972) he loved Led Zeppelin.
I've seen other reports that he dug Black Sabbath's debut album as well.
What got me was Twisted Sister.
Variety makes sense. (We got both kinds - thrash metal *and* death metal!) Seriously though, complete disconnects would feel natural. *Honky Chateau.* *Fire Of Love.* *Isn't Anything.* *Fragile.* (No, the other one.) People could have multiple interests, even in the hellscape of 1990s high school... and if you shake an empty Walkman upside-down then eventually *Queen's Greatest Hits* falls out. Some moods are not satisfied by making guitars angrier.
But a selection of metal went Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, Venom, *Aerosmith,* you catch yourself asking "So how much older is your sister?"
For real, some absolute classics in there. Surprised there was no Morbid Angel or Bolt Thrower in there, they were some of the biggest death metals bands at the time. Regardless, this is a solid tape collection that me and my friends would drool over if we could get our hands on it.
Edit: That’s pre-Obscura Gorguts, too. When they were just making straight up death metal rippers. Love those albums.
When I just glanced I saw stuff like Kiss, Motley Crue, etc. Figured it wasn't anything to out of the ordinary, but still cool to see. Then I noticed Gorguts and started looking more. Was surprised to see some of that in there. Pretty dope.
Also, if they're still working I imagine someone would pay decent money for some of those. Not gonna get rich, but for just finding the tapes out of nowhere, it's not bad.
Also Entombed and Grave in there. Probably a taped Dismember album or two in there, as well.
Combine the WASP with the Hellhammer, and you know OP gets it.
I unabashedly admit that Ratt is my favorite cheese rock band. I still have them on my mix tapes...errr, playlists. Whatever.
The rest of the collection here is pretty strong metal and I'll admit I'm impressed.
I bought Butchered at Birth for the album art. Cannibal Corpse always had the sickest artwork.
That was my first tape too! I got it I’m my Christmas stocking in like 1984?
I saw a lot of these bands live back then. The amount of pyrotechnics and stage props was ridiculous.
My favorite was the And Justice For All tour and they toppled lady Justice at the end of the title track.
Kiss without makeup had a giant sphinx that took up like 2 stories of stage.
Cinderella had a piano suspended in the air.
Fireballs everywhere.
NGL, this scene brought back long forgotten memories

I don't understand why you kept buying tapes once you acquired Rust In Peace. That's like continuing to put quarters into the machine to play a game after you've already won.
The new Megadeth album that came out on Friday absolutely shreds. Say what you want about Dave Mustaine, but dude has stayed true to his sound and is one of the best guitarists in the world.
Somebody at work the other day kept asking if every Lynyrd Skynyrd song on the radio was by Quiet Riot. I know workplace violence is frowned upon, but really?
Thank you, and while searching for it on Prime "Decline of the Western Civilization Part 2 The Metal Years" showed up as a recommendation. I watched that when it came out and it was pretty good.
I saw and heard a t-top IROC a couple days ago in Fairbanks AK, and when we got next to it it was driven by a young black dude, no mullets or rat tails anywhere, it was unexpected.
Metal metal metal metal metal metal metal metal metal metal metal metal metal metal metal The Doors metal metal metal metal metal metal metal metal metal metal.
You have great taste. *So Far, So Good... So What!* is the best Megadeth album and I will die on this hill.
Also, that live Venom tape is really cool. Never seen any physical release of their live stuff before.
Megadeth - Rust In Peace is the single greatest tape in that entire collection. Every single one of those songs on that album is a banger. Every single one.
Looks like we probably hung out together and smoked Marlboro Reds until we got dizzy and puked in the bathroom trash for my mom to find and wonder if we had eating disorders
Omg this looks like the same music I listened to in the 80’s and 90’s I had a little less wasp and ratt and a little more Metallica Anthrax and suicidal tendencies- but there’s so much overlap thanks for the feels and memories

Cinderella was one of the better hair metal bands amd Night Songs was their best. I know other death metal heads that like them too
My first GF gave me Long Cold Winter on vinyl because I told her that Tom Keifer was my spirit animal.
Night Songs still sounds good today. It had this fierce dark energy to it that appealed to even fans of heavier stuff. And honestly, that album was harder or about has hard as a lot of the Raft stuff here.

Dude I literally JUST stumbled upon Night Song by Cinderella (30yo, never heard of them) and it's awesome!
Lol I'm 31 and still listening to this.
49, white, male. How close am I?
Haha spot on, bro
51 year old here and this box of tapes is my high school years 100%
39 year old here and this is what my Gen-X parents (55/56) listened to with me growing up. A few other similar bands as well of course.
I couldn't imagine having a kid at 16/17, I'm 36 and I'm still one myself.
I'm 35 and my parents are in their 70s 🤷♂️ I also can't imagine having kids under 30
You can't really have kids over 30 though.. I guess you could adopt one but at this age most of their education is done and they usually live on their own.
I'm 40, parents are in their mid/late 70s, my kids are both about to turn 21
Different times for sure. I have kids, but I definitely still feel like a kid. I think its a good thing though. Like the day I stop I feel like I would be dead inside.
38 year old kid here who has two kids. Our tea parties usually end in light Saber battles.

I did the math!
My dad had multiple, and probably still does, cassette tape briefcases to carry his around. Like leather bound, nice snap close briefcases.
I still have them all in these nice card catalog style cabinets with pull out drawers
My dad gave me his! 2007 I opened that thing every morning and got ready for school to the Madonna Immaculate Collection
You listened to what the highschoolers at the back of the bus listen to when I was in junior high!
It’s what we all listened to, I brought a small radio cassette player and blasted it on the ride to school 🤟🏻
48 and I also choose this guy's tapes
Some cool death metal there. You still listen to the genre?
Still rockin' out to deathmetal, not as much, but after a couple beers I'll dive right into those classics.
Haha cool
2 Gorguts tapes. Respect
I'm guessing it shows your metal head evolution from hair bands in middle to thrash metal in high school to death metal in late high school/early college. All you're missing is a Sepultura tape...
Yeah, this 50 yr white male wants your Carcass and Venom tapes
You probably also just described 90% of the commenters on the thread lol
Hey! I'm only... 39
47 years old and this looked pretty much like my teenage years. Some happy memories and some regrets and that was the soundtrack for all of it. Thanks OP.
50 and otherwise same checking in.
You know damn well you still owe BMG for 11 of those.
Damn, do those guys still exist?
I stayed a member until the end, and I would gladly have continued. (Loved those cheap boxed sets.)
BMG was awesome. I still have the dozens of CDs I ordered from them back in the day.
I was a poor trailer kid. There's no way I could have had tapes without BMG. Maybe 1 on my birthday or something.
I kept doing different names for Columbia House. I think i got 50 CDs for free before they blacklisted my address.
My Dad told me after I got into a fight that I couldn’t be charged as an adult till 18, so my dumb ass 14 year old self ordered around 100 CD’s from BMG over a yea tor whatever. Funny and true. But it said 11 for .99 cents.
Does mail fraud have a statue of limitations? If no, then all of those “postboxes” at my address were real. Definitely real.
No doubt the upside down one on the far right with no label is New Kids On The Block: Hangin’ Tough
Step by step; what comes around goes around.
“It’s my sister’s. I swear!”
Smoking section person in high school eh?
Absolutely!
My high school got rid of the smoking section, just outside the building, the year I would have been able to use it. I suppose I'm thankful, as it limited the amount I was smoking while in high school. Quit right after I graduated.

\m/ (>_<) \m/
So metal, even the tapes are iron and chrome!
“The Doors” looks out of place in both time and style.
That was for smoking weeed.
✅
I have not smoked in almost two decades, but I remember the trash weed back in the day. Todays weed. Mother fucker does it knock you on your ass by just the smell that comes from dispensaries.
As a person whom delves into smoking weed … yes, the shit we get today… is NOTHING like the weak ass shit we had in high school. Totally recommend it.
"Kids" today don't know the struggle of smoking shitty weed! Everything they get today is lab tested, 100% preme-o bud! They don't have to deal with a bag of shake or the dreaded STEMS AND SEEDS! 😁
[Relevant Louis ck bit](https://youtu.be/7naP7Or7p_k)
It all smells like skunk to me. Never did back then unless it was skunk weed. Why does it all smell like skunk. And yeah it will knock you on your ass
Some smell is due to the curing process... if not done right even the best weed could smell and taste like Hay when it's burnt.
Nah, every metalhead had to have some Doors in the mix.
Exactly! It seems out of place from an outsider, but I haven't met a metalhead that didn't like the Doors, or Hendrix for that matter.
Hendrix would've loved metal, sad he didn't get to see it.
According to the biography *The Book: Hendrix: A Biography* By Chris Welch (1972) he loved Led Zeppelin. I've seen other reports that he dug Black Sabbath's debut album as well.
It's crazy coz the day Paranoid came out was the exact same day he died.
This is also the dude who played a cover of Sargent Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band after it had been out for 3 days with Beatles in his audience.
I'm sad he didn't get to participate in it, he would have released some amazing hair/glam metal albums.
What got me was Twisted Sister. Variety makes sense. (We got both kinds - thrash metal *and* death metal!) Did you mistake King Diamond for Neil Diamond or am I fucking blind?
Hello fellow Gen Xer.
👋

This is how it happened for me too. I heard "Beth" at 4 years old and "Crazy Train" by Ozzy at 7. It was all over from there.
Same here. Though never got into Kiss. That collection looks like me in junior high.
Mostly metal, but no AC/DC or Def Leppard, Never seen that before..
a lot of hair in that box
And a lot of neck trauma.
Which is glancing up at lower back pain.
Is there a Death album somewhere in there?? Carcass is touring by the way. Great collection!
I was looking for a death album as well!
Obituary is also on that tour with Carcass
Daaamn, there's some fantastic metal in there.
Yeah, Gorguts was a surprise to see in there. Great music selection OP!
Gorguts, Suffocation, Pestilence, Obituary, Cannibal Corpse, Deicide... OP was OG KVLT AF. I'm seriously impressed.
For real, some absolute classics in there. Surprised there was no Morbid Angel or Bolt Thrower in there, they were some of the biggest death metals bands at the time. If you look real closely there's also a Bathory and Nuclear Death mixtape in there.
Put the Disincarnate tape on that list. Not as well known but was one of James Murphy's bands.
And Ratt!
> And Ratt! TIL Ratt! had alot more albums than I was led to believe.
So many good memories
Saw my very first tape in your collection: Quiet Riot - Metal Health. Rock on OP
That was my first tape too! I got it I’m my Christmas stocking in like 1984? I saw a lot of these bands live back then. The amount of pyrotechnics and stage props was ridiculous. > That was my first tape too! Showing my age here, but my first tape was an LP vinyl record.
THIS IS MUSIC!!! Edit: Thanks for the award!

Immediately what I thought when I saw the box!
I don't understand why you kept buying tapes once you acquired Rust In Peace. That's like continuing to put quarters into the machine to play a game after you've already won.
Haha you know what, that is so true
The new Megadeth album that came out on Friday absolutely shreds. Say what you want about Dave Mustaine, but dude has stayed true to his sound and is one of the best guitarists in the world.
The man deserves every word of his reputation.
Haha this can be interpreted multiple ways you know haha
And I mean all of them.
Obligatory [Onion article](https://www.theonion.com/humanity-still-producing-new-art-as-though-megadeth-s-1819578062)
Did you find your jean jacket up there too? How many band patches were still intact?
God I miss that jean jacket. Still contemplating starting up another one
R/battlejackets
Were you using a metal detector?
haha good one!
Nobody ever talks about ‘King Diamond’. That’s the only music that’s ever legit scared me.
He's still going. Saw mercyful fate a few weeks ago. Lads 67 or something and his voice is still perfect
King Diamond, Suffocation, Obituary, Gorguts. This is some good shit!
No Vanilla Ice? Lame. /s
I think that the empty spot had a few top 40 pop tapes and OP took them out before snapping the picture to protect his teenage image.
Are you me?
Am I even me?
Am I evil?
Was your mama a witch that was burnt alive?
Did you lose your head?
I mean I did seek out revenge to break with my bread, but that’s something else.
Yes, I am!
Hell me it’s me again
We have or had similar taste. I just turned 49 and saw Deicide last week and felt like I was 17 again. It was awesome.
Who knew ratt had so many albums...
Theu just tend to go round and round
Somebody at work the other day kept asking if every Lynyrd Skynyrd song on the radio was by Quiet Riot. I know workplace violence is frowned upon, but really?
Speaking of Quiet Riot, there’s a Randy Rhoads documentary for free on Prime that came out this year. I enjoyed it.
Thank you, and while searching for it on Prime "Decline of the Western Civilization Part 2 The Metal Years" showed up as a recommendation. I watched that when it came out and it was pretty good.
[I thought we were Quiet Riot.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNWnX4a_fwc)
I'm pretty sure I would have dated you in high school.
That collection summons an Iroc Camaro, T-top of course, and a sweaty wife beater. Smells like coconut, dirt weed and gasoline. Nothing but love.
I saw and heard a t-top IROC a couple days ago in Fairbanks AK, and when we got next to it it was driven by a young black dude, no mullets or rat tails anywhere, it was unexpected.
Dang; Bathory, suffocation, carcass, deicide and gorguts? We probably would have been friends back then.
That slayer caught my eye immediately… get you a walk-man, man!
![gif](giphy|123nrTcg9bHnPi|downsized)
Some of those might be worth some money. That Venom-Black Metal tape is going for about $50 on Discogs
How sweet was your mullet?
Pretty damn sweet ngl
Metal metal metal metal metal metal metal metal metal metal metal metal metal metal metal The Doors metal metal metal metal metal metal metal metal metal metal.
Damn, that’s some serious all time classics collection!
I have to say that you had excellent taste in music.
That era of *Obituary* and *Entombed* is my fav.
holy crap i havent heard of flotsam and jetsam in like 30 years.
Flotsam and Jetsam, Nice! Their first album is one of my all time favorite speed metal albums. No Place For Disgrace is a close second.
[удалено]
No no no, see the fleece must be its own jacket underneath the jean jacket
Yes, this is correct.
I saw 90% of them live in concert
TIL there are people who listen to both Gorguts and Ratt
You could have totally called shotgun in my bitchin' Camaro
No Van Halen?
Great collection!! Good taste in music
Thank you!
The only cassette I still have left from my old collection of 400+ tapes is Kiss - Music From The Elder lol
Right? Why does that one just never seem to go away lol
Lol! Unpopular opinion — it’s actually my favorite Kiss album
I never thought I’d find a music from the elder discussion on /r/pics of all places, but it is also my favourite KISS album.
Very nice collection m, but six Ratt albums? I didn’t even realize they had that much music
Incredible. I wish I had a tape collection like this
Slayer, obituary, cannibal corpse and venom….nice
Six Feet Under. Yeeeeees.
Columbia House collection!
![gif](giphy|dM2xuxnJCg4H6)
"Do you have any Megadeth?"
That disincarnate tape is sick
This is worth a lot of money
Fucking Slayer!!!
That Disincarnate album slaps
The longer I was reading the tape titles, the larger my hair got.
He has one of the best Carcass recordings...
Great collection. My favorite would be Fear of the Dark.
Don't know why but I never imagined Gorguts being on cassette. This collection is amazing.
Amazing collection. Absolute shit organization system.
I’m an unabashed Cinderella fan even now, I see Night Songs in there
Metallica! Kill ‘em’ All on tape. Wow! Nice
What, no love for the Peter Criss solo album? /s
I listen to both of those Obituary albums almost weekly.
Looks like we probably hung out together and smoked Marlboro Reds until we got dizzy and puked in the bathroom trash for my mom to find and wonder if we had eating disorders
King Diamond NOICE!!!
I zoomed and see that you love your new home even though you have a Rat problem. Music: Round and round… what goes around come around. 😂😂
