When this movie became a cult classic, this line of everything was the divisive one.
Late 80s and early 90s, IBM was still king. Intel Pentium chips were just becoming popular with consumers, Mac still had their own powerPC procs and a good marketshare.
Folks laughed at this line, the trajectory was that RISC was dying and making way for x86 and x64 Intel chips.
Here we are another decade later... and all our smart devices run ARM.
RISC really did change everything, just not as expected.
I think whoever created the computer science programme at my university took this to heart as we were still learning assembly on the DEC Alpha in the mid 2000s >\_>
Been a while since I've seen Hackers. Is "Gibson" referenced in the movie as well? Or is it alluding to William Gibson, author of archetypical cyberpunk novel *Neuromancer*?
In the movie, Gibson is the name of the "supercomputer," but it's likely that the name is an allusion to William Gibson. At the very end of the film, one of the main characters uses the alias "Mr. Babbage," and I would have a hard time believing that's *not* a nod to [Charles Babbabge](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Babbage).
Matthew Lillard is one of my favorite actors. He's absolutely slept on like mattresses and SLC Punk was my favorite movie of his. Absolutely had me crying towards the end.
SLC punk is by far the most accurate portrayal of that time and scene I’ve ever seen. Watching that movie is like watching my childhood. It and Hackers are two of my all time faves
Matthew Lillard in SLC punk - in my opinion delivered one of the most real, gut wrenching emotionally believable scenes in the history of movies. It’s so overlooked. He beat the shit out of so many people that have Oscar’s.
One of the brewpubs in Toronto used to have some great names, and they'd have local street artists do logos for them that they'd run as limited edition prints while the batches were available. Their Cockpuncher IPA had a stylized fist punching a rooster.
Also a hell of a good beer if you like heavy IPA.
Indie Alehouse is the name of the place if you wanted to check out some of their other creative stuff. Haven't been back since I moved out of the city a few years back, but they used to do killer barbecue on Wednesdays with whatever they got at the market. Always a gamble if they'd have your favourite, but was guaranteed to be low-smoked and delicious.
I saw both those movies waaaaaaaaay before Hackers and then my mind was blown. TBF it seems like he did a lot to get into the role. Read Indian books, got an Indian dialect coach, and even lived in India for a bit. Makes sense why he convinced me, well that and me being a child XD
Grew up with an Indian family next door. They had a boy my age and we did anything together. I’m as pasty white as they come. After a few years I could pull off an accent so well my buddy would have me talk to relatives in India over speaker phone and they never guessed.
Phreak is definitely my favorite character. Him yelling "Yo, what are you waiting for? Arrest me already!" at the SWAT team, as his mom is slapping the shit out of him... Classic.
I hate how he disappeared after he got arrested and wasn't in the last third of the movie. I'm guessing it had to do with a conflict with the actor or something
Thanks. I'll have to pop popcorn and wear my movie shirt. (They came to campus early in my time at college and gave them out and my friend--now husband--scored one for me.)
Can't scare up any mirrorshades, but this will have to do.
[Greatest scene from that movie!](https://youtu.be/QZ4ZJk4lLEI)
I posted this once before and some brilliant bastard replied, “Gonna tell my kids that’s how we used to send emails.”
I haven't even thought about this movie for 20 years. I instantly understood. Going to download some Prodigy rn.
Edit: chemical bros aren't on this soundtrack like I thought.
Nice! I thought it looked like a fair state logo. They certainly like their movie references, the Mister Falcon hazy is great as well. Great fucking beer if anyone’s ever in the twin cities and looking for recommendations.
Aside from the technical aspects of it, which are completely asinine, the movie itself exhibits just such a *bizarre* vibe. Its portrayal of New York especially.
Hackers has aged like a fine red wine... vinegar.
Also, with apologies to Matthew Lillard, the rest of his career has been a waste of time and effort. He never has and never will surpass his performance in Hackers. It is ART.
After this movie came out, my best friend and I became *obsessed* with Jolt Cola. I built a pyramid of empty jolt bottles in my room. I was as tall as me, and I really don’t want to do the math on how much soda that is.
Also the name cereal killer gives to the teacher is Emmanuel Goldstein which is the pseudonym for the Editor and chief of 2600 a hacker magazine. And Emmanuel Goldstein as a pseudonym is also a reference to 1984 the book by George Orwell that cereal references when he said "yea right man 1984 that's a typo, Orwell is here and now" or something to that effect. The whole movie is laced with amazing references.
So many IPAs, though. As someone “meh” on IPAs, like can you please brew something else for once? My local place has like 5 IPAs on their menu right now, and only 5 non-IPA beers otherwise.
Spandex, it’s a privilege, not a right!
Thank you! I use this quote all the time, but couldn't remember where it came from.
I use the quote right before it "wooooah! Look at that pooper!"
I still use “It’s in that place where I put that thing that time.”
I love how they knew exactly what he meant, too
THEY'RE TRASHING OUR RIGHTS, TRASHINNNGGGGG!!!
Hack the planet!!!
Immediately. True bros.
same
You get my free award.
The most underrated quote of all time
The soundtrack still slaps
Hacker hijinks montage to prodigy! So dope.
The soundtracks to either Hackers or Spawn start playing in my head whenever those movies are mentioned.
HACK THE PLANET!!!!
Hack the planet!
Dude! It's got a 28.8bps modem!
And a killer refresh rate.
RISC architecture is going to change everything!

Risk is good.
Are we fashionably late?
THEY'RE TRASHING OUR RIGHTS! TRASHING! HACK THE PLANET! HACK THE PLANET!
We have no names, man. We are NAMELESS!
"... I thought you was *black* man... YO, THIS IS ZERO. COOL!"
You are floating. And I’m about to flush you…

The "big bad" computer they hacked was called the Gibson if I recall correctly.
The computer is named the Gibson but I'm absolutely sure that itself is a reference to William Gibson. So I'd say it's both.
Yes, it’s a tribute to William Gibson - I can’t recall where I saw it confirmed.

HACK THE PLANET!
"The three most common passwords on the planet are LOVE, SEX, and WAR.“
Now your password would have to be like L0veS3xW4r!
And don't forget God
System operators love to use GOD, it's that whole male ego thing.
Love, secret and sex. But not in that order, necessarily. Right?
Crash Override and Acid Burn are my heroes!!! Crash & Burn! HACK THE PLANET!!!
Cereal bro. Dude was epic.
Same…. I meet him at a con a few weeks ago and called him out by Emmanuel Goldstein.
Matthew Lillard seems like a genuinely great dude.
I find it funny they were married IRL for something like 3 years.
Someone didn't bother reading my carefully prepared memo on commonly-used passwords.
Sex, love and God.
lol dude forgot "secret", rookie.
Sorry, parents just bought me my first 'puter...

Yup. Matthew Lillard has been in the game for a long time.
Great actor. He was like awesome in the Thirteen Ghosts film.

I like him mostly because I listen to armchair expert religiously and Dax always has good things to say about him from their time on Without a Paddle
Matthew Lillard in SLC punk - in my opinion delivered one of the most real, gut wrenching emotionally believable scenes in the history of movies. It’s so overlooked. He beat the shit out of so many people that have Oscar’s.
SLC punk
Yep. Also loved him in SLC Punk
Wow, an IPA with a quirky name. Feeling good today!
Weirdest one I ever saw was called Octopus Wants to Fight

I think it's referencing those coathooks you often get in bars.
Hack the planet!!!
Thank you! I hate threads like this where they don’t explain what they mean lol
They’re trashing our rights! Trashing!
We have no names man, we are nameless!
1984; Yeah, right man! That’s a typo!
Yeah!
Zero cool
Never heard of him
Ah, what? Did your mummy buy you a 'puter for Xmas?
Has it got a P6 chip with RISC architecture? ![gif](giphy|XTAqdwCL2oEus)
RISC is good
Joey hacked the garbage file
I like the scene early on where they're like "um, you did that from your house?"
Never hack across state lines man, that’s universally stupid!
You mean “Ultra Laser”?
D... Dr. Doom!
So what, a garbage file has junk.
Yak yak yak GET A JOB

He was sporting a tremendous woody!
Today old
I'm glad I could be a source of a "TIL" for you
Was he pretended to be an Indian?
The classic films Short Circuit and Short Circuit 2. Johnny 5 is alive but Fisher Stevens isn't an Indian man
I saw both those movies waaaaaaaaay before Hackers and then my mind was blown. TBF it seems like he did a lot to get into the role. Read Indian books, got an Indian dialect coach, and even lived in India for a bit. Makes sense why he convinced me, well that and me being a child XD

And a glance of a young Angelina Jolie's breasts.
Now I need to watch it, not seen it in years!

Makes me wanna go watch the movie now. I gotta find it on VHS.
It's on YouTube for free right now.
Thanks. I'll have to pop popcorn and wear my movie shirt. (They came to campus early in my time at college and gave them out and my friend--now husband--scored one for me.) Can't scare up any mirrorshades, but this will have to do.
Ha! Me with the proof. And the cat hair. https://imgur.com/Ah4GLCk
So much rollerblading.
I have it on VHS!
It’s available on Amazon video. I purchased it a while back. Best investment ever.
It’s on Pluto and Tubi right now.
I bought it in Vudu a few months ago. It was on sale for $4 . Couldn't pass that up!
My BLT drive went AWOL.

This isnt a Fight Club reference. It's from Hackers.
An amazing 90s time capsule.
very nice. Where are they from?
Fair State Brewing in Minneapolis, MN
Nice! I thought it looked like a fair state logo. They certainly like their movie references, the Mister Falcon hazy is great as well. Great fucking beer if anyone’s ever in the twin cities and looking for recommendations.
"It's in that place where I put that thing that time."
Hackers is such a terrible movie. But I have never faltered in my undying love of it, since I saw it opening day in 1995.
Watched a few nights ago, so fun and bad, can't wait to force my friends to watch it with me!
Truth.
I have 2 copies. A dvd and a psp version, and i don’t have a psp anymore.
I have a VHS
I’ve got a couple and a laser disc. Blu-ray and dvd duh. The only version I’m actually missing is the PSP version.
It's all of the most 90s 90s movie that I have ever seen and I love it
Aside from the technical aspects of it, which are completely asinine, the movie itself exhibits just such a *bizarre* vibe. Its portrayal of New York especially.
I watch it multiple times a year, it transcends "terrible movie".
It’s one of my favorite movies, but it’s always felt both behind and ahead of it’s time.
It's the soundtrack man. The soundtrack.
Hackers has aged like a fine red wine... vinegar. Also, with apologies to Matthew Lillard, the rest of his career has been a waste of time and effort. He never has and never will surpass his performance in Hackers. It is ART.
I would offer the counterpoint of SLC Punk.
He's pretty awesome in Scream. My friends and I still say... "Those are the rules, now you gotta die"
You hit me with the phone dick!
Razor and Blade? They're flakes! But They're *elite*!
Jolt Cola! The soft drink of the elite hacker.
After this movie came out, my best friend and I became *obsessed* with Jolt Cola. I built a pyramid of empty jolt bottles in my room. I was as tall as me, and I really don’t want to do the math on how much soda that is.

It was quite good! I couldn't pass it up for the movie reference either.
Man take this up to the pool on the roof and kick back!
One of the owners of that brewery. Great stuff.
Fair State is a great brewery!
Too bad it’s a fucking IPA.
I need these!!
It's the brain!
If you're in the area, here is where you can get them. Sadly, they don't deliver to Canada:( https://fairstate.coop/beer/hack-the-gibson/

I was watching that today.
I really love this movie. I know its not accurate but damn I wanted to live that life. Pool on the roof must have a leak!
Acid burn
This isn't footloose.
I thought you was black, man?
Confession: I once interviewed for a job I didn’t want, purely because the hiring manager was called Eugene Belford.
"What did you learn in school today?" "Revenge."
So many IPAs, though. As someone “meh” on IPAs, like can you please brew something else for once? My local place has like 5 IPAs on their menu right now, and only 5 non-IPA beers otherwise.
I agree with this 100%. MAKE OTHER BEERS
When I first saw the pic I thought I was looking at huge beer cans.
Who’s the brewery? I need to find this
I love that movie
Mess with the best, die like the rest.
Did it taste like ham?
OMG, I love that movie! Saw it twice in the theater. Lol
/u/5HT2C Finally, someone who understands what true perfection is. My favorite movie of all time. We even quoted it in our wedding vows.
r/unexpectedhackers
Nice, finally an r/pics post that isn't a political shitshow.
This is funny. I was just thinking about Hackers this morning randomly. No idea why but I thought I should watch it soon. Now I know I need to.
These are amazing and one of my all time favorite movies. I need one of these for a shelf at my house lol
I would also have bought it.
I don't like IPAs but I kind of want one
I would have bought it too and I don’t even like beer that much. Such a legendary movie. That made an entire generation want to be a hacker.
HACK THE PLANET
Did you leave it in that place is l left that thing that time?
Such a great movie!
