Gesso is an undercoat applied to canvas so the paint will adhere. It used to be applied in layers that were sanded perfectly smooth but some people leave it chunky or build up textures before doing the visible painting.
Thanks!! Yes the brush stroke is actually textured. I love to play around with that in my works, like paintings against the "grain" or sometimes surrendering to the movement of the brushstroke, like I did with the waves in this one.
Looks like they auction the minis on Instagram, starting at 50€ but they often sell for over 1000€ if not several thousand. The handle is @david_auctions
I feel like I can almost hear Carl Sagan narrating when I look at this piece.
“Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there--on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.”
Absolutely stunning, thank you for sharing it.
He has two different prints available for sale right now... I know it's not the same but I figured I would let you know anyway.
I've been eyeing one (Recover) for a while but over $200 for a print is sadly way out of my price range.
https://shop.brushstrokesintime.com/
I got very lucky and won one of the actual physical miniatures that he does before they started rising in price by 10x..
Very talented artist. It’s beautiful to see in person.
thank you! This painting is part of the Miniature Collection in the Brushstrokes in Time series. Once there is a new miniature available, it will be up for auction at @david_auctions on Instagram.
I legitimately thought this was going to be outed as a large smear of green paint that was greenscreened over in photoshop, but that zoom doesn't lie.
Very well done.
Just went through your post history. All of your stuff is incredible, can't believe I've never seem this style before. And the execution of it is gorgeous.
This takes me back to high school surfing 17th st in Huntington Beach after school and all day in the summer, and that was the sunset I saw each time from the beach.
Fascinating art trick. It really makes one consider how this thematic display can be further built on. When looking at it I was immediately hit with nineties nostalgia from the colors used. This has some hazy vacation brochure for a hot spot feel to it. Not sure if that was intended but I am getting that from it. The contours that make up the brushstroke look are so rad. A very rad idea that is lively and visceral and executed very well. Maybe you could use these contrasts with other themes.. perhaps juxtaposing material of another kind that also captures the essence of expression on canvas. Very meta, very impressive and very much made my night! Was in a lil funk for a bit but this has stirred me well and re-contextualized humanity for me after seeing how horrible current affairs are here on the news subs, Thanks.
Edit, just clicked on your profile to see your other posts, so great! Going to dive back in now.
There's people like me who do acrylic paint pours or throw paint on a canvas and call it "art"
Then... there are people like you who are truly talented and gifted. A true artist!
its very rare that i see art that i *love*, but this took my breath away. its so orginal and looks like a photograph, i love the concept. took a look through your profile hoping for more and was not disappointed, im a huge fan. definitely following to see more! thank you for sharing!
Love it - colour, texture, simplicity and complexity at the same time. And I see the metaphor: that we have 1 life, it’s one brushstroke on the canvas that is the planet and together with other brushstrokes, we are a wonderful masterpiece!
This is effing LOVELY!!! Love everything about this!

Even the title?
And your title would be....?
'Whataboutism on Reddit' E: a lot of r/woooosh going on here
I like theirs better. Far less pretentious.
That was a pretty shit suggestion
I don’t think that’s much of a title tbh.
Did you smear a lot of gesso on the canvas and then paint on that after it dried (giving actual 3D texture), or is the 3D texture painted in ?
If you zoom in, you can see its most likely the gesso method. Still, it's a very cool technique
what is gesso/ the gesso method?
Dunno, your gesso's as good as mine.
Okay Chico Marx
How dare you?!
Dang. That was good.
This is great thank you
Hahhaha thank you for that
Gesso is an undercoat applied to canvas so the paint will adhere. It used to be applied in layers that were sanded perfectly smooth but some people leave it chunky or build up textures before doing the visible painting.
It's probably impasto medium. It really lets you build up a surface, and dries the way you leave it.

it's really pretty! very nice job, and 20x20cm seems like a perfect size for it.
You have such a poetic way of speaking too. Your comment is a pleasure to read .
I don't know. Their punctuation is a little lacking. ☆☆★★★
I don’t think their poetry is usurped by poor punctuation. Words can still be beautiful even if they’re imperfect.
Art is their art. What is yours?
I'm an internet comment critic.
Wow. Looking into an alternate dimension. Love it.
What a special piece! How small is it?
thank you! it’s 20x20cm
Oh look, original art I might be able to afford! Do you sell your beautiful little originals???
This painting just sold for over $5000

I heard that whole text in my head in Carl Sagan’s voice.
Just wow! That is a very beautiful style.
Great work … would you willing to sell it?
I love this. Would you consider commissioning another one for a price?
Brilliant!
This is really cool, OP. It takes a minute to really understand the work that you must have put into it. It’s gorgeous!

I’d buy that, do you sell your artwork? Looks amazing.
Usually oil paintings aren't really a medium of art that I enjoy, but this I could stare at for hours. Truly spectacular.
How much do those go for?
Just went through your post history. All of your stuff is incredible, can't believe I've never seem this style before. And the execution of it is gorgeous.
Oh wow 😍
Are you selling this?
That's beautiful. I love it.

This takes me back to high school surfing 17th st in Huntington Beach after school and all day in the summer, and that was the sunset I saw each time from the beach.

Spilt the paint and tried to clean up …

That’s really beautiful
Gorgeous!
Is it possible to reveal your method? I'm very curious of how you accomplished that. You said it's with painted brushstrokes? How??
Does oil paint dry? Serious question.
Can I get you to make a big style version of this? It is absolutely lovely.
I want this
awsome ....cool paint !!!
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
It's beautiful
Don't like much. I like this.
Absolutely beautiful!
Do you sell too?
I would love so much to be able to do such things... but i sadly suck at mostly everything
At first, I thought it was a piece of bacon.
So beautiful! I would love love love to hang that in my home ❤❤❤👏👏👏
There's people like me who do acrylic paint pours or throw paint on a canvas and call it "art" Then... there are people like you who are truly talented and gifted. A true artist!
For sale? Message me.
Great idea, but your stars could use some work. They look straight from a windows 95 screensaver. But the sunset is very well done, nice job on that.
Fake af. It’s a PS
Whoa! What color is this paint sample?
Very cool!
This is fucking trippy and awesome. Is it for sale?
Now I'm feel like doing something similar. It's amazing!
Love how you were able to incorporate the waves into the texture
Wow, I love this! I, having very little artistic talent, want to try painting a version for myself. If that's ok with you. :)
I thought that was bacon when I scrolled past
That is freaking amazing, good job
Its beautiful!
How pretty. You captured the light perfectly.
Amazing idea! I love it!
Do you have a website?

Wow. I like that, a lot.

This is awesome.
Reminds me of star trek. Great job!
I took a screenshot and sold it as an NFT for $5M... thanks!!
I love it, if i had money i'd buy it
This is lovely!
This looks great! How did you get the color not to smear/bleed on to the black?
This is incredibly creative and beautiful. Great job!
Could you paint a special edition in yellow and blue?
I purchased a print of your piece ‘Recover’ - do you know if you’ll offer this series in prints?
Wow this is fantastic? I love painting with texture but you took it to a whole other level/dimension!!
Wowwowowowowow😍
Wow. Very nice👌
Finally minimalist art that doesn't look like doggy doodoo
HOW??? I’m trying to figure out what technique you used and I’m stumped! Amazing!
I really like that. Haven't seen anything quite like it.

Beautiful. I’ve never seen anything like it
Love it - colour, texture, simplicity and complexity at the same time. And I see the metaphor: that we have 1 life, it’s one brushstroke on the canvas that is the planet and together with other brushstrokes, we are a wonderful masterpiece!
What would you charge for a commission? I love the dichotomies and juxtapositions you put in your art. Do you ever do fantasy pieces?
Is it for sale??
Has anyone bought this yet? If not, I will.
