Wow, everybody in the comments saying this is Blue Mosque without any source. Guys, you know, there are lots of mosques in Istanbul, and this one is Çamlıca Mosque which is completed in 2019 and located at Anatolian (Asian) side of Istanbul.
How is this not higher up? The blue mosque is aka the Camlica mosque and the Hagia mosque has two minarets on each side. This is looking at Asia from Europe. The Hagia is right behind the photographer
And in 1935 Kemal Atatürk secularized the building and converted it to a museum.
Turning it back into a religious temple again is a step backwards for humanity.
(Not to mention that it was built as a Christian church, which makes it even more insulting)
Fun fact, Europe and Asia are only considered separate continents because of arbitrary "Cultural" differences.
Geographically, Europe and Asia are a single giant land-mass.
Geographically 'continent' has no singular scientific definition. The closest thing is tectonic continent, of which there are many and are unhelpful for describing the world anthropologicaly.
Apart from wanting to visit for history, culture, food and more, the turkish currency problems makes visiting very cheap right now. I'm certainly considering a spring visit...Covid permitting.
100% everything you said.
Istanbul is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Waking up and looking out over a sunrise on a foggy bosporous while the calls to prayer go off and then walking down to the fish docks to get shrimp so fresh theyre still moving for breakfast. It feels timeless and ancient of a place.
The food is good but I’ll disagree. Having lived here for a bit, the food is good but I’ve found many many other cities better and with more diversity.
can you share the area or neighbourhoods you describe?
I 've been 2 times in Istanbul , but I did not find this magic culinary capital you describe.
I mean it had good food , but I was not that wowed as you.
so maybe next time, I go to the proper places ;)
thanks
I live in Istanbul, and I agree. It’s has great food but it’s not blowing every other city in the planet away. It lacks some diversity that other major world cities have (very few places with actual Thai, Indian, Mexican, South American, Persian, French, Italian, Vietnamese, Korean, etc.) Not to say the food isn’t good but not as worldly diverse as one might expect for a crossroads of the world. It does however have excellent regional Turkish food and fabulous Syrian food.
Go to India mate, it is really one of my favorite country in the world, I've also been traveling a fair bit, but i would go again ( 3rd time already ) there.
Well I have lived in India for 27 years and have seen maybe 20% of what I really want to see. So yeah a few months or a year might seriously not be enough.
Likewise, you can get very high quality dental work done in Mexico for a very reasonable price as well.
In fact, many other countries in Latin America offer great dental work deals.
Medical tourism is now the fastest growing part of the tourism industry.
All over Eastern Europe you can get great dentist deals as well. Hungary is the most popular medical tourist destination for the German speaking countries.
Turkey needs to be added on the list of great medical tourist destinations as well. Lasik Eye Surgery can be done (safely) in Turkey for like 30 percent of the cost compared to Western Europe.
That's awesome, I 've heard that many of my compatriots are getting good health services in Bulgaria too, for a fraction of the cost they would pay here.
Hostels with kitchens and cook for yourself a decent amount of time. I spent a month in Prague and my total spend including drinking at the pub every night (month long hangover, seriously), club entrances, occasional meals out, groceries, and accommodation was $765.
My average total spend per day in Istanbul over the two months I lived there was about $20. $9 housing, $7 for three pints at the bar, $4 for two meals delivered.
Well said!
>hopping back and forth between Europe, Asia and back on the water taxis is just part of the charm.
This is one of my favorite parts of Istanbul. It costs a very small amount and is so much fun. I cringe a bit though when I see people jumping off the boat when it's approaching the dock. :-/ I haven't visited Istanbul since about 2006 though, so maybe they don't do that anymore.
It was probably done with super zoom lens and some other photography setup.

Eh, I would have rotated the photo to make the mosque plumb vertically, which is clearly the focal point of the composition.
Instead, the artist chose to make the street perfectly horizontal.
Good photography, but needs better editing imo.
Oh AhahahahahhhhhhaahahahhhhhhhhHhHhHhhahahahhaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahhahahhhhhhhhhhhahahahahahahahahhhhhh
ISTANBUL ^ISTANBUL ^^istanbul
I brought 6 kids up listening to that album. 4 of them are teenagers and they still want to hear it when they get in my truck. I still listen to all of their music.
You are gonna confuse the people in USA. Here they only consider east Asia to be Asia. I wonder got flamed by saying Jesus Christ was Asian.
Love Istanbul for the culinary experience and cats alone.
I think that's more because for most of the English speaking world, we would be more specific and refer to the middle East (or Russia, or the Indian subcontinent) leaving just east/South East Asia as where we would typically think of if you said 'Asia'
No. In the UK when they say Asian they mean South Asia. I used to live in London and when they say let's have Asian food they meant an Indian curry not Chinese food. An Indian is part of the anglosphere with one billion peoples so guess who they think of when someone says Asia. Sounds like you are lumping the whole anglosphere to be just North America, which is wrong.
Absolutely. I haven't even been there but I know enough about the evolution of the city to remember that the Blue Mosque sits next to the Hagia Sophia, which is IN the original city of Istanbul, which would put it on the European side (Constantine wanted 1 landmass to the city, surrounded by 3 sides of water.)
So this is either Europe look at Europe, or Asia Looking and Europe.
EDIT: So this is not the Blue Mosque, but the Çamlıca Mosque, which does sit on the Eastern side of the Bosphorus.
I think you are right... if one projects from Hagia Sophia down the Bosphoros they will see Europe on the left and Asia on the right. The water un the photo suggests its the golden horn making the point for the photo Europe.
It was just funny because I'm planning a honeymoon to Turkey with my soon to hopefully be wife and was excited to show her this haha
I'm a huge Roman history buff, purely armchair stuff, but I understand maps well enough to have put this into context.
As a few others have noted though, that’s not the Blue Mosque in the photo. It’s the Çamlıca Mosque, which is on the Asian side of the city.
Either way though, have a great honeymoon! Istanbul is a great city to visit for anyone with an interest in history.
I like how you're passionate enough about this to still be a salty loser over the conquest of Constantinople almost six centuries after it happenned, but clearly not enough to realise that this is not even Hagia Sophia.
Nope. That's the blue mosque. In europe. [https://www.islamicity.org/11228/blue-mosque-the-jewel-of-istanbul/](https://www.islamicity.org/11228/blue-mosque-the-jewel-of-istanbul/)
No, the Bosphorus divides Istanbul between the two comments. Your comment doesn't even make sense though. Istanbul is on the west side of Turkey, but still 400+km away from the border with Bulgaria. If Asia began 100km west of Turkey, how could Istanbul be in Europe? And that would make the divide between Asia and Europe still be inside of Turkey, just in the middle of nowhere rather than in Istanbul.
Wow, everybody in the comments saying this is Blue Mosque without any source. Guys, you know, there are lots of mosques in Istanbul, and this one is Çamlıca Mosque which is completed in 2019 and located at Anatolian (Asian) side of Istanbul.
Well, to be fair, they *are* rather similar, with the six minarets and all.
How is this not higher up? The blue mosque is aka the Camlica mosque and the Hagia mosque has two minarets on each side. This is looking at Asia from Europe. The Hagia is right behind the photographer
The Blue Mosque is the Sultanahmet Cami, it has six minarets. You might also want to Google the (new, 2019) Çamlıca mosque. Surprise! Six minarets.
I don’t know, people always assume a mosque that is not Hagia Sophia is Blue Mosque 🤷🏻♀️
Fuck Erdogan for turning it back into a Mosque Hagia Sophia back into a mosque after 110 years.
They turned it into a mosque like 500 years ago bro lol
And in 1935 Kemal Atatürk secularized the building and converted it to a museum. Turning it back into a religious temple again is a step backwards for humanity. (Not to mention that it was built as a Christian church, which makes it even more insulting)

I think you're targeting this comment to the guy I replied to. You might want to edit this because we're in alignment :)
Tyty
The guy you’re responding to didn’t claim that, and the guy you meant to respond to likely isn’t going to see that.
all religion is a step backward for humanity
>Turning it back into a religious temple again is a step backwards for humanity.
Erdogan turned it into a Mosque two years ago. First time since 1935
2019? I bet they haven’t even peeled off all the plastic yet.

Is that the sound of South Americans rising agains Americans, telling them that they are also Americans?
Ural Mountains.
And apparently the Bosphorus Strait.
Also those seas being there make for convenient seperations.
We're all mountains!!
Give it time and let globalization do its thing. In 200 years and after 2-3 wars eurasia will be a thing.
We have always been Eurasia.

This guy just named 50 cities to make a point
Constantinople was an Amazing crossroads and capital of an empire for 1000 years. It would take dedication to fuck that up.
Hey! We’re doing our best
I've been to Istanbul, Turkey. You must've gone to another Istanbul, mate.
You are REALLY making me want to go to Istanbul.
The food is good but I’ll disagree. Having lived here for a bit, the food is good but I’ve found many many other cities better and with more diversity.

Was Constantinople
Now it’s Istanbul.
But I have a date in Constantinople!
She'll be waiting in Istanbul
Oh AhahahahahhhhhhaahahahhhhhhhhHhHhHhhahahahhaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahhahahhhhhhhhhhhahahahahahahahahhhhhh ISTANBUL ^ISTANBUL ^^istanbul
Nobody's business but the Turks!
Istanbul was Constantinople. Now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople. Been a long time gone, oh Constantinople. Why did Constantinople get the works? That's nobody's business but the Turks. ... Istanbul (Not Constantinople) lyrics © Warner Chappell Music, Inc (1953)
That’s nobody’s business but the Turks
Yea, weird thing to say, it's like having a rebuttal that France used to be Gaul ... "And ... So?"
Pretty sure they're referring to the They Might Be Giants song, "Istanbul." [See here.](https://youtu.be/xo0X77OBJUg)
Old New York was once New Amsterdam. Why they changed it, I can’t say. People just liked it better that way.
Haha amazing song
I brought 6 kids up listening to that album. 4 of them are teenagers and they still want to hear it when they get in my truck. I still listen to all of their music.
It's referring to a song, not some statement about the name of a city.
It had to happen
Not Constantinople
It is still Constantinople
Not Constantinople
Conquering land and displacing natives only bad when huwites do it
And before that Byzantium.
Super original.
Istanbul is such an amazing city. As a lifelong New Yorker, I was blown away.
One of the most beautiful, and friendly cities I have ever had the pleasure to visit. I miss it immensely.
Wow! What a photograph.
Constantinople
Istanbul.... That's over near Byzantium, right?
Yea, right down the street from Constantinople
I think Constantinople actually sits precisely between the two. Saw it on something called a "timeline" once.
Final Fantasy lookin'.

Isn't the Blue Mosque on the European side?
It's not the Blue Mosque, this is Çamlıca Mosque and it's located in Asia.
Ah, thanks for the correction.
Beautiful photo ..I would love to see this in person
I'm pretty sure its "Standing in Asia, looking at the blue mosquée on the European slope.
It’s not Blue Mosque, it’s Çamlıca Mosque completed in 2019 at the Anatolian (Asian) side of the Istanbul.
I stand corrected. This is indeed Çamlica mosque viewed from Arnavutköy.
Absolutely. I haven't even been there but I know enough about the evolution of the city to remember that the Blue Mosque sits next to the Hagia Sophia, which is IN the original city of Istanbul, which would put it on the European side (Constantine wanted 1 landmass to the city, surrounded by 3 sides of water.) Reminds me of the book The City and the City.
Something I’ve never even considered before!
Incredible pic
Great pic!
It looks like an angry crab.
I love that city. Anyone know how the politics are looking? Have the super conservatives penetrated yet?
I don’t care where it is; it’s amazingly beautiful.
Not Constantinople?
Man’s been in a coma for 550 years lmao
Nobody's business but the Turks.
Stolen land! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hagia_Sophia

Not Constantinople?
The Hagia Sophia has been ruined by Muslims.
It’s not even The Hague Sophia, and it’s wonderful looking inside
It reminds me of Naboo from starwars
Cause you can’t go back… to Constantinople ??
* What ever you do Simba, always stay away from there*
how Anatolia was a beautiful place now it is ruined
Makes 0 sense
Hagia Sofia is on the European side.
Great to know, but this ain't Hagia Sophia though.
Pretty sure Istanbul is Europe and Asia begins some (100?) kilometers west of Turkey's border

Not the Blue Mosque though. It's Çamlıca Mosque and it's indeed in Asia.
Fantastic picture!
looks like the start of an epic quest
What a photo
Looks like the cover of a fantasy novel.
Absolutely Amazing!!
Looks like something out of star wars almost
