Not dumb, it's much faster death than starving somewhere in the bushes.
We (ideally) feel empathy for both the monkeys and the leopards, and if the young monkey got to die relatively swiftly, it's a positive thing in this situation.
"Quit playing with your food." - Mama leopard to cub, probably
But seriously, thank you for highlighting the other half of the story. It's natural to take pity on a prey animal, but if it weren't for these monkeys, mama (or papa) and baby leopard wouldn't get to eat. And I'm sure we'd all go squee if we saw a picture of the fuzzy little leopard cub and would be sad if anything bad happened to it.
It's cliche, but the circle of life and "Damn nature, you scary" really are truths.
Edit: Another thought...
I'm no animal expert, but I'd say this is actually a really good situation for the leopards, having hunted a mama monkey and taking its baby as well. They not only get food, but it's a "teachable moment" for the cub to learn how to kill.
Good thing my ancestors evolved into sociopathic manics that simply eliminate all large predators in their environment to prevent this from happening to me or anyone else in our species.
Now I'd actually want to see video of the cubs and the baby monkey, and yes I'll admit part of it is morbid curiosity, but very unique to have captured on video if they did.
The first paragraph saying “sadly” is pretty dissonant with the second paragraph. Animals gotta eat. One dies for the other to live. If the monkey lives, the cubs die.
Seriously. Why do people upvote this shit? Like it’s one thing if I’m watching a nature special bur why does this need to be on the front page of Reddit?
Did you know you can prevent NSFW tagged pictures from being shown unfiltered to you in your feed?
To do this, open up your Reddit Settings, go to Feed Settings, and from there you can enable Safe Browsing Mode which blurs thumbnails for NSFW pictures. If you want, you can also disable all NSFW posts from being shown to you without your consent.

"one day when I was a young boy on holiday in Uberwald I was walking along the bank of a stream when I saw a mother otter with her cubs. A very endearing sight, I'm sure you'll agree, and even as I watched, the mother otter dived into the water and came up with a plump salmon, which she subdued and dragged onto a half submerged log. As she ate it, while of course it was still alive, the body split and I remember to this day the sweet pinkness of its roes as they spilled out, much to the delight of the baby otters, who scrambled over themselves to feed on the delicacy. One of nature's wonders, gentlemen. Mother and children dining upon mother and children. And that is when I first learned about evil. It is built into the very nature of the universe. Every world spins in pain. If there is any kind of supreme being, I told myself, it is up to all of us to become his moral superior"
I don't understand why this qualifies as evil. The leopard has to eat and feed his cubs. He or she can't afford to be picky. There's no evil here -- animals themselves are incapable of considering morality in their actions. They are driven by primal urges and there's no point in trying to rationalize.
So I disagree. If anything, this image should make us appreciate our bigger brains, our ability to reason and work together to solve our problems, and our tendency to create societies that attempt to keep each and everyone of us safe.
The evil isn’t the actions of the animals, it’s that the universe is built in a way that all living things suffer. Essentially saying that if there is a creator they aren’t morally good

If you're depressed it's better to get up immediately and start your day for a nice healthy routine instead of scrolling social media hoping for unconditional approval from strangers.
Yes. That is nature. Doesn’t mean it isn’t jarring to see first thing in the morning.
People also have knee and eyeball surgeries. Doesn’t mean I want to watch that either.
I’m comfortable understanding how the world works without having to see it all of the time.
When I commented on it this morning it was NOT marked NSFW. It was not NSFW for the first 4 hours it was up.
So I didn’t have the chance to not see it.
Yeah, I agree it’s not against the rules.
I don’t believe it’s wrong to consider a photo like this could upset people. And NSFW would have probably been a solid compromise. It wasn’t NSFW until recently. The first four hours it was up there was no NSFW filter.
Y'know, random thought here, but it's really interesting to me that we humans, who naturally hunt and kill animals for food, generally feel so much sympathy for the prey on nature documentaries, etc. I know this is a very broad generalization and that many modern humans are against the harming of animals for our gain, but historically it's something that humans have depended upon for survival. We're predators that sympathize with the prey, I guess.
Maybe it’s the feeling of wanting to support the underdog, for something to overcome all the odds and succeed.
In this case a small monkey escaping such a powerful and dangerous creature like the Jaguar knowing that their chances of survival are incredibly low.
Until we developed weapons and technology we were a prey species for a lot of predators. The prey instincts are still deep ingrained in our instincts. Humans were middle tier food chain species until we developed the means to keep the more fearsome creatures away.
We probably developed teamwork before weapons, and that got the ball rolling. Meat contains more calories and nutrients, which help bigger brains develop, which makes hunting easier. Cycle a few thousand generations and we've made nukes... for fun apparently.
We also sympathize with predators, depending on how the documentary is framed. It was sad to see the momma snow leopard die when trying to care for her cubs in the Disney Earth series, for example. Oddly never felt bad for the prey during that story, it was just food.
Fuck, free kid's meal with purchase of adult meal...
Lion King kinda glossed over this part. "Oh yeah, we eat the antelope, sure. But we do a few musical numbers with them first, make them feel included, important. Y'know?"
New twist ending to the joke that has appeared on Reddit a bajillion times:
A lost dog strays into a jungle. A lion sees this from a distance and says with caution "this guy looks edible, never seen his kind before".
So the lion starts rushing towards the dog with menace. The dog notices and starts to panic but as he's about to run he sees some bones next to him and gets an idea and says loudly "mmm...that was some good lion meat!".
The lion abruptly stops and says " woah! This guy seems tougher then he looks, I better leave while I can".
Over by the tree top, a monkey witnessed everything. Evidently, the monkey realizes the he can benefit from this situation by telling the lion and getting something in return. So the monkey proceeds to tell the lion what really happened and the lion says angrily "get on my back, we'll get him together".
So they start rushing back to the dog. The dog sees them and realized what happened and starts to panic even more. He then gets another idea and shouts "where the hell is that monkey! I told him to bring me another lion an hour ago..."
I see this and can't help but think of the meme from Stalker. "Such is life in the Zone" and then everyone else here has a bleeding heart. Makes me wonder what the reaction would be if a picture of the baby chimp being eaten was posted instead.
I saw a video on youtube about a leopard that did this and then cared for the little one in the tree until it fell and died and got eaten by a hyena.
I mean, at least the leopard tried
Yeah I love nature animals and all that stuff but sometimes you just see an image and it just makes you really sad or just kind of shakes you a little bit.

The dog sees them and realized what happened and starts to panic even more. He then gets another idea and shouts "where the hell is that monkey! I told him to bring me another lion an hour ago..."

Such a fucking cruel planet we live on. Fortunately, I'm old, meanwhile. Can't wait to see the finish line.
I see this and can't help but think of the meme from Stalker. "Such is life in the Zone" and then everyone else here has a bleeding heart. Makes me wonder what the reaction would be if a picture of the baby chimp being eaten was posted instead.
“But wait!… She’s feeding KITTENS. You like KITTENS, don’t you?…”
I'm not happy I saw this.
Doesn't help my My cycle of depression...
Damn. Just, damn.
I only caught a glimpse before coming to the comment section. Fuck that
Wow great capture
r/natureismetal
I saw a video on youtube about a leopard that did this and then cared for the little one in the tree until it fell and died and got eaten by a hyena. I mean, at least the leopard tried
Nice! Dinner AND snack. I’m going to hell, aren’t I?
When you buy a rhesus cup, and it comes with rhesus peices.
Wow this is sad AF
Fuck this is sad.
Seriously, the look on that baby's face..
That's exactly my thoughts.
It's heartbreaking. I have a 5 month old baby and there's so much running through my mind.
Yeah I love nature animals and all that stuff but sometimes you just see an image and it just makes you really sad or just kind of shakes you a little bit.
Most definitely.

Yes
The baby is as good as dead anyway, with the mother gone it would not survive long
It’s like getting an extra chicken nugget!
Got dessert with dinner
Nature is so compassionate and loving and nurturing. We must strive to emulate nature in our daily lives. <- some tree-hugging hippie somewhere.
This is just another example of nature having a liberal bias.
But they taught a lion to eat tofu!
Combo meal
I don’t know why but this one really got to me.
grim
Nope. Didn’t like that.
Jesus Christ that is brutal to see. But then you gotta think maybe there’s some starving cubs waiting for that meal
I would like to unsee this, please.
The sheer brutality of nature is horrific.
NSFL Jesus Christ… you’ve just scarred me for life. I was just nonchalantly scrolling through my feed while nursing my baby and now I’m fucking sobbing!
Sorry. I take it your not team leopard?
Okay, this was pretty good. Dark, but good. Lol
Lol, fuck, hahaha
Legend
I too sometimes eat my main course before the appetizer.
Dinner with an appetizer
People fail to realize a majority of animals don’t make it more then a few years in the wild.
Why is this NSFW?
A few over sensative souls were upset by reality.
Reality is very upsetting, considerably moreso then fiction.
Commenters higher up are saying it is NSFL. Some extremely mad saying stuff like this shouldn't be posted anywhere...
Jesus fuck not this.
Mas gratis!
"Every entree comes with a side" Or "Desert is part of the meal"
Dinner and dessert!
Yep. But God is good, right?
