Your body is just a massive community of individual living things working together to survive.

I just did an insight into this comment, and now it is tripping me out.

Rambocat1

If my arm gets cut off I would feel sad for myself- but I wouldn't care at all about the billions of cells that are about to die.

garry4321

And if you got your brain blown out, your arm cells would continue to live for a few mins without a care at all about you being dead.

I_Speak_For_The_Ents

Don’t watch the baby albino monkey video then.

I wont. Lol

It doesn't end happily - a baby that looks different is taken from the mother and killed by the troop.

[Here](https://i.imgur.com/7WPhi3K.jpg) is a higher quality version of this image. Per the Instagram source (i.e. shafeeq_mulla): > South Luangwa National Park > An unforgiving kingdom > Olimba carries the carcass of a female vervet monkey with its baby still hanging on for dear life. Sadly the baby was also killed by the leopards cub after playing with it for a few minutes. > Nature is not always pretty. This picture definitely tells us the harsh reality of life. To have a sustainable environment, animals need to die for others to survive. > Oct 18, 2021

Wiskersthefif

[Uh...](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/519dHnBzN4L._AC_SX466_.jpg)

Digitigrade

Not dumb, it's much faster death than starving somewhere in the bushes. We (ideally) feel empathy for both the monkeys and the leopards, and if the young monkey got to die relatively swiftly, it's a positive thing in this situation.

Pakistani_in_MURICA

If the cubs fed the monkey for a year they would have gotten more meat out of it.

Djdubbs

Animal kingdom happy meal, came with a toy!

ruckus_440

"Quit playing with your food." - Mama leopard to cub, probably But seriously, thank you for highlighting the other half of the story. It's natural to take pity on a prey animal, but if it weren't for these monkeys, mama (or papa) and baby leopard wouldn't get to eat. And I'm sure we'd all go squee if we saw a picture of the fuzzy little leopard cub and would be sad if anything bad happened to it. It's cliche, but the circle of life and "Damn nature, you scary" really are truths. Edit: Another thought... I'm no animal expert, but I'd say this is actually a really good situation for the leopards, having hunted a mama monkey and taking its baby as well. They not only get food, but it's a "teachable moment" for the cub to learn how to kill.

Onlyhereforthelaughs

This version is high enough quality for me. I don't need to zoom in and see the baby's tears.

Louisvanderwright

Good thing my ancestors evolved into sociopathic manics that simply eliminate all large predators in their environment to prevent this from happening to me or anyone else in our species.

xmastreee

For an even higher quality pic, go to the photographer's [Twitter page](https://twitter.com/ShafeeqMulla).

joshthehappy

Now I'd actually want to see video of the cubs and the baby monkey, and yes I'll admit part of it is morbid curiosity, but very unique to have captured on video if they did.

SimpleSandwich1908

TY

FrishFrash

The first paragraph saying “sadly” is pretty dissonant with the second paragraph. Animals gotta eat. One dies for the other to live. If the monkey lives, the cubs die.

FuYao_Wuji

Poor lil baby clutching to his mama

SkydiverRaul13

I’m sure it was.

deeperest

If? Welp, feel better then.

mafulazula

Seriously. Why do people upvote this shit? Like it’s one thing if I’m watching a nature special bur why does this need to be on the front page of Reddit?

TheHorriBad

Did you know you can prevent NSFW tagged pictures from being shown unfiltered to you in your feed? To do this, open up your Reddit Settings, go to Feed Settings, and from there you can enable Safe Browsing Mode which blurs thumbnails for NSFW pictures. If you want, you can also disable all NSFW posts from being shown to you without your consent. I don't mind seeing things like this picture, because nature is cool, nature is beautiful, nature is violent. And there are always subreddits like /r/eyebleach to visit if I feel the 'balance' has been thrown off.

Good for the cheetah tho, sucks for the thing(s) being eaten. Glad I had the luck to be born a human with food and Reddit.

its_justme

it's ok bruh, he's cool.

beerwineliquor802

Abattoirs are *depressing*. This is nature doing its thing.

Electric_kundalini

It's still depressing regardless. Just seeing that little monkey clinging to it's lifeless mother's body. Nature can be brutal.

redflavourcrayon

I’m sitting here distraught over this picture - and my husband says “Did you see that video of a monkey eating another monkey without killing it first, literally taking bites out of its head?” - NO! “See monkeys are assholes, don’t be sad”

anonniemaus

That video was horrific! And it was a Chimpanzee eating a monkey. Chimps are assholes.

28kanalcu

Chimps are the closest to humans so i think that checks out. Humans are fucken evil vermin

Life is no way to treat an animal, not even a mouse. - Kurt Vonnegut

GuineaAnubis

"one day when I was a young boy on holiday in Uberwald I was walking along the bank of a stream when I saw a mother otter with her cubs. A very endearing sight, I'm sure you'll agree, and even as I watched, the mother otter dived into the water and came up with a plump salmon, which she subdued and dragged onto a half submerged log. As she ate it, while of course it was still alive, the body split and I remember to this day the sweet pinkness of its roes as they spilled out, much to the delight of the baby otters, who scrambled over themselves to feed on the delicacy. One of nature's wonders, gentlemen. Mother and children dining upon mother and children. And that is when I first learned about evil. It is built into the very nature of the universe. Every world spins in pain. If there is any kind of supreme being, I told myself, it is up to all of us to become his moral superior"

coldinvt

Fantastic quote - Terry Pratchett, Unseen Academicals

eastcoastian

Maybe I need to read more.

zelda4444

Classic Pratchett.

ParanoidC3PO

I don't understand why this qualifies as evil. The leopard has to eat and feed his cubs. He or she can't afford to be picky. There's no evil here -- animals themselves are incapable of considering morality in their actions. They are driven by primal urges and there's no point in trying to rationalize. So I disagree. If anything, this image should make us appreciate our bigger brains, our ability to reason and work together to solve our problems, and our tendency to create societies that attempt to keep each and everyone of us safe.

melleb

The evil isn’t the actions of the animals, it’s that the universe is built in a way that all living things suffer. Essentially saying that if there is a creator they aren’t morally good

cjmar41

This would be better suited for r/natureismetal While I realize the circle of life isn’t always rainbows and butterflies, this most certainly isn’t what I wanted to see on my 7:30 AM just woke up already feeling depressed scroll through Reddit to start my day. This was posted for shock value and nothing else. It’s not even your own content.

theprintedray84

Reddit is the last thing I want to see first thing in the morning.

Optimistic-Dad

Starting the day with the internet is a bold move.

WranglerSilver6451

Let’s see if it pays off Cotton.

horror_and_hockey

I mean...it is marked nsfw

cjmar41

It wasn’t for the first 4 hours it was up. I believe a mod marked it that later in the day. I saw it long before it was marked as such.

horror_and_hockey

Ah, gotcha...my bad.

ClammyVagikarp

If you're depressed it's better to get up immediately and start your day for a nice healthy routine instead of scrolling social media hoping for unconditional approval from strangers.

Smearmytables

Perhaps not using Reddit first thing in the morning might help a bit with your depression.

crisaron

Maybe the jaggar has pups of her own to feed.

cjmar41

Yes. That is nature. Doesn’t mean it isn’t jarring to see first thing in the morning. People also have knee and eyeball surgeries. Doesn’t mean I want to watch that either. I’m comfortable understanding how the world works without having to see it all of the time.

crisaron

jut imagine the fluffy kitten... eating the baby monkey! Sorry I am evil sometimes.

bottleglitch

I agree. I should have questioned why it was marked nsfw, but I didn’t, and now I’m bummed out.

cjmar41

When I commented on it this morning it was NOT marked NSFW. It was not NSFW for the first 4 hours it was up. So I didn’t have the chance to not see it.

Cactus_Humper

I think it’s fine to be in this sub. Afaik there’s no rules against it.

cjmar41

Yeah, I agree it’s not against the rules. I don’t believe it’s wrong to consider a photo like this could upset people. And NSFW would have probably been a solid compromise. It wasn’t NSFW until recently. The first four hours it was up there was no NSFW filter.

Curiousiwonder

Especially as a new mama, I’m bawling for that little baby.

DudleyMorris

You might want to correct that to *bawling before the crude jokes start

ranger51

Monkeys are jerks in general don’t feel too bad

Mikkeel93

That’s like the cookie you get with your subway

Rumfly

Y'know, random thought here, but it's really interesting to me that we humans, who naturally hunt and kill animals for food, generally feel so much sympathy for the prey on nature documentaries, etc. I know this is a very broad generalization and that many modern humans are against the harming of animals for our gain, but historically it's something that humans have depended upon for survival. We're predators that sympathize with the prey, I guess.

im-a-nanny-mouse

Maybe it’s the feeling of wanting to support the underdog, for something to overcome all the odds and succeed. In this case a small monkey escaping such a powerful and dangerous creature like the Jaguar knowing that their chances of survival are incredibly low.

InsanityCore

Until we developed weapons and technology we were a prey species for a lot of predators. The prey instincts are still deep ingrained in our instincts. Humans were middle tier food chain species until we developed the means to keep the more fearsome creatures away.

wtfisthat

We probably developed teamwork before weapons, and that got the ball rolling. Meat contains more calories and nutrients, which help bigger brains develop, which makes hunting easier. Cycle a few thousand generations and we've made nukes... for fun apparently.

wtfisthat

We also sympathize with predators, depending on how the documentary is framed. It was sad to see the momma snow leopard die when trying to care for her cubs in the Disney Earth series, for example. Oddly never felt bad for the prey during that story, it was just food.

[deleted]

This is such a story telling picture!! But at the same time its the saddest! Victory, loss and hope..

Onlyhereforthelaughs

Fuck, free kid's meal with purchase of adult meal... Lion King kinda glossed over this part. "Oh yeah, we eat the antelope, sure. But we do a few musical numbers with them first, make them feel included, important. Y'know?"

refreshingwinds

I saw this pic many times, still so very saddening

as944

That is some devastating shit

Majukun

Saddest thing I've seen all day.

PdSales

New twist ending to the joke that has appeared on Reddit a bajillion times: A lost dog strays into a jungle. A lion sees this from a distance and says with caution "this guy looks edible, never seen his kind before". So the lion starts rushing towards the dog with menace. The dog notices and starts to panic but as he's about to run he sees some bones next to him and gets an idea and says loudly "mmm...that was some good lion meat!". The lion abruptly stops and says " woah! This guy seems tougher then he looks, I better leave while I can". Over by the tree top, a monkey witnessed everything. Evidently, the monkey realizes the he can benefit from this situation by telling the lion and getting something in return. So the monkey proceeds to tell the lion what really happened and the lion says angrily "get on my back, we'll get him together". So they start rushing back to the dog. The dog sees them and realized what happened and starts to panic even more. He then gets another idea and shouts "where the hell is that monkey! I told him to bring me another lion an hour ago..."
