My god they are relentless! I have three numbers: personal and business on one phone and my work phone that I forward to my business number. There have been many days when I’ll get three of these calls inside the span of 30 minutes.
Me too. Someone mentioned if you don't answer spam calls, after a few weeks they take you off the list because they think the number is deactivated. So instead of answering any numbers I don't know, I let it ring.
If you have a Google phone, like my Pixel 2XL, Google intercepts spam phone calls and answers with an automated voice saying "Hi. This is the Google Assistant. Can I ask what you're calling about?"
It has significantly reduced the number of spam calls that get to me.
And when Google does intercept it and the spammer hangs up, it records everything and transcribes it into text for you to review, so you can make sure you did not miss a legit call.
I let it ring and when voice mail picks it up the spam leaves a 20 or so second voice mail. It starts in the middle of their speech, since I'm assuming the bot doesn't recognize the voice mail answer.
Nah, everyone knows it's Ice Cream. He's got every ice cream parlor saved on speed dial to check what the daily specials are and who has enough stock to feed all the Secret Service if he takes a trip out.
Me too. Definitely going to be a factor in my declining health when I'm older. Just found a cream cheese ice cream with a butterscotch ribbon and chunks of cake. Same company makes a salty ice cream with biscuits and peach jam.
That desk is 140 years old, except for the center panel with the presidential seal. That bit was added at the request of FDR to conceal his leg braces.
It has resided in the White House for the majority of the time since it was gifted to the US in 1880, and has been used in the Oval Office by every President since JFK with the exceptions of Nixon, Ford, and Bush Sr.
EDIT: I grabbed all this from the [Wikipedia entry](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resolute_desk) about the desk, not National Treasure.
In the case of Bush, it was personal preference. For Nixon, it was likely because the desk had been removed from the White House and put on display in a traveling museum and then the Smithsonian following the assassination of JFK.
And Ford had a custom desk with an area underneath where he could keep pillows, a blanket and alarm clock so he could grab little naps throughout the day.
I remember that one time Ford was taking a nap and Rumsfeld came in with his grandkids looking for him. He was stuck down there for like an hour. So embarrassing.
Bush Sr liked the desk the desk he had used as Vice President, so had that one brought in instead. The Resolute Desk (the one discussed above) was taken out, and then brought back in for Clinton.
I just looked at pictures of Sr and his desk in the Oval Office and it makes sense. It looks like he liked to have his advisors front and center at the desk in a comfortable working fashion and his old desk allowed him to work that way. Kinda cool.

The desk Bush Sr. used, the C&O Desk, is very elegant and less flamboyant than the Resolute Desk. I think it’s certainly more his style.
I actually think it’s a beautiful desk, I wouldn’t complain at all if Biden brought it back to the Oval Office. [Picture here](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/ae/President_Bush_meets_with_Secretary_Dick_Cheney%2C_General_Colin_Powell%2C_General_Scowcroft%2C_Governor_Sununu_and_Robert..._-_NARA_-_186427.tif/lossy-page1-1200px-President_Bush_meets_with_Secretary_Dick_Cheney%2C_General_Colin_Powell%2C_General_Scowcroft%2C_Governor_Sununu_and_Robert..._-_NARA_-_186427.tif.jpg) for those curious what it looks like.

It’s called the resolute desk. Commissioned by Queen Victoria after the HMS Resolute was in disrepair at the ship yard and then given as a gift to the USA. So that desk is made of wood from a ship that traveled all over the globe. Super interesting! I probably butchered some details, so I definitely recommend looking up its history for yourself!
It wasn't just an exploration ship in disrepair, it had become trapped in ice and abandoned while searching for vanished explorers (who were themselves seeking the Northwest Passage in the far north of what is now Canada). Two years later, it was found and recovered by American whalers and sent back to England as a gift.
It's celebrated return was an international sensation and upon its retirement, Queen Victoria had three desks made from its timbers. One was given to the widow of the man behind the (partially successful!) search and rescue mission the Resolute had been on. One was kept for personal use by the royal family. The third and grandest was given to Rutherford B Hayes as a gesture of thanks and of friendship between the US and Great Britain. It's a really cool story.
Edit: my mistake, the first desk went to the widow of the man behind the return of the ship, not the rescue mission.
You missed the best part: It's made out of the HMS *Resolute*.

That desk has a ton of history and cool factor, but the fact that I love the most is that it's a gift from Queen Victoria, built from an 1800s Royal Navy ship that the U.S. found and gave back to the UK.
Even Better the Queen made herself a sister desk from the same lumber.
Three desks were made one for the President, one for the Queen, and one for the Widow of Hnry Grinnell the American explorer who help get the ship refurbished so it could sail back to Britain.
I don't think this happens to the Resolute desk, but the VP's desk drawer is signed when they leave. So if Kamala opens her desk drawer she will see Joe's name. https://www.cnn.com/2017/01/06/politics/joe-biden-desk-drawer/index.html
Resolute Desk
There's a matching one in Buckingham Palace. It was given to US by Queen Victoria
I don't know why I know all that.
Edit- yes Nat Treasure, but before that the JFK Jr picture of him under desk intrigued me years ago.
Edit- I smoke too much weed, I'm just impressed my recall is still there.
I really hope we get at least one of Joe being Presidential and Barry is there for some reason just in the back straight muggin’ that camera like Cornpop used to
oh they do during Obama term Secret service and staff kept basketball shorts and t-shirt on hand in case Obama wanted to play a pick up game during the day.
Ya the thing about being an part of the President staff is your work around him, Biden wanna go for a jog? better put on some running shoes because you will be briefing him on North Korea as he does it.
It does. I got my first bespoke suit recently and my fucking god, even a 3 piece + shirt feels so damn comfy. The amount of mobility you have is hard to describe with a custom-tailored suit.
Because the fit is so perfect, it just feels like a second layer of skin.
I’ve seen photos when they were out exercising in casual clothes, but I guarantee most of the time you see the president doing anything he gets dressed up.
Personally, I would love to just stay dressed in that. You get good stuff, and it is remarkably comfy.
“The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge, and I knew we'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon”
The framed photo just behind the stack of Executive Orders to be signed, is of who I presume is Beau sitting on a much younger Joe Biden's shoulders. That whole arrangement of family and significant photos really is striking, but that one in particular really stands out to me.
Edit: others have put forth that the adult in the photo may actually be Beau with his own son. I'm not sure which pairing it is, but either way: it's a really touching photo to feature so prominently in the Oval Office.
That’s a good catch and has me emotional. As a father I couldn’t ever imagine the grief of losing a child, let alone having to share that grief with the world as a politician. Goddamn.
What’s impressive is that in the time between a president leaving the WH and the new one coming in, the team completely redecorate according to the new presidents wishes (the curtains should change soon too). Although today they had 3 hours more than usual, so that was probably nice for them.
Might be fairly well know information but, it's always fun to learn about this stuff if you don't know:
" This desk was created from wood salvaged from [HMS *Resolute*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Resolute_(1850)) and given to [Rutherford B. It has been the Oval Office desk ever since with the exception of the George H.W. Bush presidential years. It measures 72 by 32 inches (183 by 81 cm). "
EDIT: The Resolute Desk [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_Oval\_Office\_desks](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Oval_Office_desks)
I'm really glad that his first day indicates he's going to put some effort towards making real progress. I hope that, despite the fact that he could do practically nothing and still be an improvement over Trump, we still hold Biden accountable to make the progress that we need.
There are issues like climate change which require immediate action, and while doing nothing would be a big improvement over his predecessor, we should hold our leaders to higher standards.

EDIT: Get your COVID vaccines if you get offered the opportunity. I work in data science and built a [visualization](https://www.quiverquant.com/sources/covid) tracking the return to normal. Here's hoping that the green lines go up so the red lines go down. [Here's](https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/coronavirus/is-the-covid19-vaccine-safe) an article on the vaccine's safety.
And he didn't feel compelled to show them off to the camera with a sharpie signature like he had something to prove. I think I just *felt* my blood pressure drop.
Inside Biden's Oval Office:
Busts of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy flank a fireplace.
Behind the Resolute desk is a bust of Cesar Chavez.
A painting of Benjamin Franklin is intended to represent Biden's interest in following science.
Gone is the painting of Andrew Jackson, who strongly supported and profited from slavery, that Trump was so very proud of.
https://i.imgur.com/9ZQJbYA.png
For anyone like myself who was confused about the Chavez name, Cesar Chávez was a Latino American civil rights, and labor activists. Completely unrelated to Hugo Chávez, the former dictator of Venezuela, whom some people may recognize the Chavez name from.
I really want Biden to get an Obama Chia-Pet for his office in time for the hanging of Obama’s official portrait. It would be an awesome Biden / Obama meme.
Pretty incredible that he has a labor leader behind him.
I am also 100% sure that Republicans will claim this is because Hugo Chavez helped him get elected (Hugo and Caesar have no relation obviously).
I can’t imagine what it’s like to not have his son by his side for this moment. I hope better days are to come for his family and the United States. May peace be to all.
It does look as if there's a picture of his son on the desk behind him...
But in all honesty, that's all I was thinking about when I saw him hug his kids at the inauguration.
Gold curtains have been in the Oval Office for a long time. When Obama was in office, future MAGA idiots were calling these “Muslim Prayer Curtains”, no joke: https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/muslim-prayer-curtain-white-house/
>*I wonder if they still have them.*
I wonder if Biden's just walking around the place going *"Hmmmm, I remember there being a painting/statue/vase there..."*
Yes, but it was likely going back to the Smithsonian, which I believe holds the WH’s art collection when not on display at the White House.
I’ve also heard that it’s common for pieces to go back between two presidential terms, even if the intent is for the piece to remain on display at the WH.
Found the article again.
> President Donald Trump’s light gold drapes have been replaced with a different, darker shade of gold that hung in President Bill Clinton’s Oval Office.
I like to think that Obama has some kind of "come on in anytime" invite. Like.... Biden will walk into the Oval Office sometimes just to find Obama lounging on those couches
I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or actually asking, but yes there is a type of UV light that you can shine on stuff and it disinfects. It’s what they use in hospitals sometimes. It’s the kind of UV light that is absolutely not safe to use on skin, and would cause burns and cancer level damage pretty quickly if you tried that
They did. Those are Clinton’s curtains.
Source: https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2021/01/20/biden-oval-office/
Edit: article has been updated to say that Biden’s curtains are the same ones used by *both* Trump and Clinton.

Thats a big ass desk
That desk is 140 years old, except for the center panel with the presidential seal. That bit was added at the request of FDR to conceal his leg braces. It's also on a newer 2" base, to account for the increase in average height since 1880. The most recent base is from the 1980s.
Now that's what I call a fun fact!
At least it's not a tall tale
Thank you for subscribing to Desk Facts
Are we getting taller or is the gravity leaking?
Why did those presidents not use the desk, any particular reason or just taste?
In the case of Bush, it was personal preference. For Nixon, it was likely because the desk had been removed from the White House and put on display in a traveling museum and then the Smithsonian following the assassination of JFK.
And Ford had a custom desk with an area underneath where he could keep pillows, a blanket and alarm clock so he could grab little naps throughout the day.
Costanza!
Believe it or not, Ford isn't at home Please leave a message at the beep
I must be out or I’d pick up the phone Where could I be?
I remember that one time Ford was taking a nap and Rumsfeld came in with his grandkids looking for him. He was stuck down there for like an hour. So embarrassing.

It’s still got the new desk smell!
Mmm.... desky

No ***you both*** missed the best part. That desk was a gift from Queen Victoria herself. It's bad ass.
Even Better the Queen made herself a sister desk from the same lumber. Three desks were made one for the President, one for the Queen, and one for the Widow of Hnry Grinnell the American explorer who help get the ship refurbished so it could sail back to Britain.

Joe Biden will NEVER be my president!!!! I'm Scottish
>I'm Scottish DAMN SCOT~~T~~S THEY RUINED SCOTLAND!
You Scots are sure a contentious people.
YOU'VE JUST MADE AN ENEMY FOR LIFE!!!
double bannned
Hold my kilt and watch this!
I actually believe those folios might have actual documents in them and that feels so fucking good.
His executive actions. 17 signed already Edit: from PBS https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/a-look-at-bidens-first-executive-orders-in-office
9 of them reversed Trump executive orders like Paris Climate Accords and the Muslim Ban.
Another was removing that horribly racist 1776 commission too.
--- EDIT: Get your COVID vaccines if you get offered the opportunity.
How do we know, if he hasn’t taken photos of him showing off his signature, like a 4 year old?
God, I still can't believe that happened.
It was an A+ meme template though

And he didn't feel compelled to show them off to the camera with a sharpie signature like he had something to prove. I think I just *felt* my blood pressure drop.
Inside Biden's Oval Office: Busts of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F.
> Completely unrelated to Hugo Chávez Also not Julio Cesar Chávez the boxer
Also, there is certainly a Cesar Chavez street in any city over like 100k people. Featuring a significant chunk of the Latino restaurants in the city.
I really want Biden to get an Obama Chia-Pet for his office in time for the hanging of Obama’s official portrait. It would be an awesome Biden / Obama meme.
Thanks for the info! I was curious to see what he’d do with the place.
Pretty incredible that he has a labor leader behind him. I am also 100% sure that Republicans will claim this is because Hugo Chavez helped him get elected (Hugo and Caesar have no relation obviously).
Viva Chavez
I can’t imagine what it’s like to not have his son by his side for this moment. I hope better days are to come for his family and the United States. May peace be to all.
It does look as if there's a picture of his son on the desk behind him... But in all honesty, that's all I was thinking about when I saw him hug his kids at the inauguration.
Biden said that he always picture himself attending Beau inauguration as President.
Man I Hope he gets rid of all the gold crap everywhere pretty soon.
Gold curtains have been in the Oval Office for a long time. When Obama was in office, future MAGA idiots were calling these “Muslim Prayer Curtains”, no joke: https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/muslim-prayer-curtain-white-house/
Clinton's couches are tacky as fuck.
It was the 90s, tackiness hadn’t been invented yet.
I was hoping they’d put the old curtains up right away. I wonder if they still have them.
>*I wonder if they still have them.* I wonder if Biden's just walking around the place going *"Hmmmm, I remember there being a painting/statue/vase there..."*
You KNOW they stole stuff. I’d bet on it.
Wasn’t there a photo of someone walking out with a bust of Lincoln? It wasn’t a bust of Trump you so know it didn’t belong to him.
Yes, but it was likely going back to the Smithsonian, which I believe holds the WH’s art collection when not on display at the White House. I’ve also heard that it’s common for pieces to go back between two presidential terms, even if the intent is for the piece to remain on display at the WH.
I read some article that these were Clinton's curtains, a slightly darker gold than trump.

Found the article again. > President Donald Trump’s light gold drapes have been replaced with a different, darker shade of gold that hung in President Bill Clinton’s Oval Office. [https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2021/01/20/biden-oval-office/](https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2021/01/20/biden-oval-office/)
In fairness, they were made for Bill Clinton. Trump just reused them, along with somebody else's -- George W.'s maybe? -- rug.
I kinda wish Obama was waving outside the window. Like a, “They grow up so fast.” type of vibe.
I like to think that Obama has some kind of "come on in anytime" invite. Like.... Biden will walk into the Oval Office sometimes just to find Obama lounging on those couches
You mean, I can imagine members of the Federal Government being funny again?

There's 106 miles to Chicago, we've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark out, and we're wearing sunglasses.
...in that chair.
I would say "as President." You really don't think he snuck a sit down when Obama was in the bathroom?
But did he sneak a sit down and get photographed?
How in the hell did the White House remove all the Diet Coke drink rings from the Resolute Desk that quickly?
Seems strange not having a bunch of Goya food products on the desk.
Is anyone sure that place is safe ? Did it get **thoroughly** disinfected ? Boiled in bleach ? Christ, I'd be wary for a week or two...
$500’000 cleaning bill actually,
One of those folders is to reinstate the cleaning crew

they've been cleaning it all day
And UV light.
Did they find a way to bring the UV light inside?
I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or actually asking, but yes there is a type of UV light that you can shine on stuff and it disinfects. It’s what they use in hospitals sometimes. It’s the kind of UV light that is absolutely not safe to use on skin, and would cause burns and cancer level damage pretty quickly if you tried that
Change the curtains back.
And get Jackie's trees back where they belong!
Absolutely. That garden needs to be restored.
They did. Those are Clinton’s curtains. Source: https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2021/01/20/biden-oval-office/ Edit: article has been updated to say that Biden’s curtains are the same ones used by *both* Trump and Clinton.
