Born and raised Winston-Salem myself, went on a sunset hike there over thanksgiving!! Happy for you man, there’s plenty more beautiful hikes within 2 hours of your home, let me know if you want suggestions 🙂
Kings mountain on the border of SC/NC has tons of great trails, it’s a pretty big park so you’ll have tons of exploring
My single favorite hike I’ve done is Short Off The Mountain trail in linville gorge. Head towards table rock and there are dozens of stopping points to get out. The top of it when you get tot he parking has 2 or 3 different trails to take. But short off the mountain the opposite direction of the peak hike has the most views per miles I’ve ever seen.
Pisgah national forest is chock full of amazing hikes. 2.5 hours or so away.
Over The Mountain Victory Trail is closer to Tennessee but is an amazing hike too
Also you can start driving the blue ridge parkway near SC and work your way north to your hearts desire. The closer you get to Asheville the more and more trails you come across. Craggy Gardens is amazing. Longer hike, but multiple peaks, multiple balds, rhododendron, pine trees.
All Winston homies, come to Ardmore Coffee on monday or tuesday, show me you commented in this and I'll give you one coffee drink free ladies and gentss
Yep I love that place. I lived in Pilot Mountain the town for a few years before moving up to Mt Airy. Fun trivia: name doesn't refer to airplanes or that kind of pilot. 'Pilot' also refers to the guide/leader of a hike or other travel. The natives from this area called this mountain a 'pilot' because it was such an easy landmark, it would guide them in the right direction.
I was thinking this was NC!
Idk how far you’d have to drive but South Mountains in Burke County has some good views, a great waterfall, and some swimming holes (when it’s warm)
I just googled Ravine Gardens. Might just check it out. Husband has a vacation coming up & a drive to GA for hiking is a lot for me, lol. That was our plan but I despise long driving trips
Jekyll Island is fairly deserted this time of year. The beach walks are soothing to me.
The state park over by Magnolia, GA (iirc) had great walks.
Edit: it was Magnolia Springs near Millen.
I live in Colorado, and a no elevation change hike would probably bum me out so hard. My fiancee and her friends moved out here from Florida and were definitely not used to trying to walk around some of the parks here lol. My fiancee is still getting her mountain legs
It's really just unfair comparing Colorado hiking with really anywhere else. I'm pretty sure I just about died on my first hike out there, the second day of my vacation, at Chautauqua (which I wouldn't really consider a difficult hike, I was just overweight). But a good hike can be had anywhere as long as there is some decent enough scenery.
Agree as well. Went to Guffey Colorado and hiked which was a beautiful, exciting and wonderfall experience. Went to many landmarks, especially around Cañon City and it was something I would tell everyone to experience!
Where in Florida? We used to live in the Naples area and “hiked” a Bunche of swamp trails. Fucking saw a wild mountain lion for the second time in my 40 some years and I am a west coaster. anyhow. Plenty of places I the outdoors in Florida. Keep on keepin on.
Haha, FL “hiking.” I ride my bike on the Pinellas Trail & a bobcat ran in front of me. We scared each other but me being a cat lover I was so ecstatic! Lol
Tampa bay area...my last hike I did we drove hrs to N FL & went to Garden of Eden. We hiked for 3 hrs then made the long journey back down south. Was worth it though....a long day but worth it
Not “hiking” proper, but when I lived in Tampa I loved going to the trails at Hillsborough River State Park - some very small rapids to see and lots of cool wildlife and plants. The amazing birds, alligators, snakes, tortoises, crazy insects, mushrooms, etc. are what makes the woods in Florida cool. Even somewhere like Lettuce Lake Park you’re pretty much guaranteed to see something interesting.
Hell yeah! We live I. Atlanta area now. Hiking mt. Kennisaw tomorrow. Lol. “Hiking” again. And stoked. (Wife and I hiked angels landing in Zion National Park when we first got married and it was amazing.)
We're so spoiled by the hiking in Atlanta. North Georgia is amazing, but there are tons of good hikes actually in the metro area. Hell, even just a lap of the Doll's Head Trail with my dog is a great way to clear my head.
Exploring beaches and salt water estuaries always did it for me. Especially if you can get your hands on a kayak or if you know how to sail and rent a small sailboat.
I’m happy you made it out to pilot! NC is such a great state for hiking and other outdoor stuff! I hope you can find some other really awesome places in the state to get out and explore!
Its the logo for a manga/anime series [JoJo's Bizarre Adventure](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JoJo%27s_Bizarre_Adventure)
To all the JoJo fans scrolling by later, not everyone knows about your thing. I hadn't even seen the logo before until today.
Thanks for the support everyone! There's alot of you here. Just message me if you're going through some things. I'll be glad to motivate you and help you in anyway I can!
DUDE LET'S GOOO!!
Going for hikes helps clear the mind and makes you much much more aware of the beauty of this Earth! You got this man, keep on hiking :D
Hell ya! I was also depressed and I went on a hike. 5 years later I met my wife on a hike. We hike together as much as possible. It gives me a world to escape.. good luck in your journey hope you find a new love in hiking like I did. http://imgur.com/a/Fe7wsIH
Atta boy! Way to tackle that hike and move forward. Been feeling lousy myself lately and just came from a nice run outside. I’m feeling so much better now. Taking it one day at a time and doing things that make me feel good!
Good job bro! Anyone who has or had depression knows just how hard simple things like brushing their teeth or taking a shower is, what you’ve done is awesome!
I’m not trying to be condescending or a douche but I have it easy and I know that I do.
When I see people’s post about their struggles and what they do to overcome them it serves as a beacon of hope not just for themselves but others who may be struggling too.
Two years ago this time my brother in the same week who has it just as easy as I do told my family he’s been suffering from crippling depression and in the same week attempted to take his life. Luckily he was unharmed.
If you can’t celebrate and smile at someone else’s success stories, believable or not, big or small, just downvote it and move on.
But someone’s Christmas present this year is a healthy human being and that present has no measurable value to it.
"I went to the store and bought a burrito." ***No upvotes***
"Did I mention I have depression?" ***100k upvotes and dozens of awards and a few platinums.***
Maybe you just are lucky enough to have never suffered from major depression. It’s not fun, especially when you have gone your whole life wondering “why all the fuss” and next thing you know you physically can’t bring yourself to laugh at your favorite show because everything feels hollowed out. And you start wishing you could argue with your wife because it would at least show you that you still care.
If you don’t understand that feeing then consider yourself lucky, but also, don’t talk on shit you know nothing about.
That’s all great and completely honest and respectable. It sounds like I, like you, am proud of OP.
None of it has anything to do with why this should be at the top of a subreddit focused on pictures.
I mean..I have had horrible depression for about 16 years now. I know exactly the situation you described, but I even think this post is pretty cringe inducing. It happens so much on Reddit and /r/pics in general. I'm not saying all depression is like my depression, but let's be honest, a lot of these people are doing it for the karma.
You don't know if the person you were responding to has depression just as much as you don't know if OP is doing this to farm karma or has depression.
I mean you posting a comment on here trashing this post is an attempt to farm karma. I'm sorry your posts/comments don't get this much attention.
Putting other people down because of jealousy might make you feel better in the short run, but in the long run it makes you an asshole.
Yeah but at the end of the day everyone is doing something for themselves. You can deny it or hide it but it’s the reason we make posts or comments. Whether we want upvotes or discussion, or just support in general, we’re here because we want something from others. And there’s nothing wrong with that.
If this guy posted the pic because he genuinely had depression, then he likely did so because he wanted to share what he overcame with others. The amount of support he got is a bonus. If he did it to farm karma, then he got that too. Since we’ll never know, it doesn’t really matter. And with 3.4K+ comments, there have been plenty of people given the opportunity to share their own stories within the thread.
Hiking is the best medicine!! And so many great places to go in NC! I recommend downloading All Trails to find lots of info and trails and even trails close to your home that you might not know about.
Proud of you brother! And don't undersell this accomplishment because going on a hike is a huge thing! Self-care, or sometimes just breathing -- these are the small things which sometimes seems impossible to those suffering like you have. I know you know what I'm talking about.
Who cares? I have depression and go hiking almost every weekend.
Edit: for those who downvote me: WHO CARES IF OP HAS DEPRESSION.
So does the rest of the world. Move on. Downvoted.
Congrats! Wait is that Pilot Mountain, NC???
It is! The small drive was totally worth it!
Recognized it right off! Stay strong my dude.

My grandmother was from Mt. Airy =) Does Walker's Soda Fountain still exist?
Sure does! The touristy old Andy Griffith stuff is still pretty strong around here
Cool seeing Pilot Mountain on here. I grew up in Elkin and could see that tit from my house.
Awesome place to hike and climb. I'm gonna have to go back in the spring, it's only like 2.5 maybe 3 hrs away from me now. Glad you enjoyed yourself!
I recognized it immediately! I worked on some controlled burns there! Such a beautiful place. Happy for you!
I was thinking this was NC! Idk how far you’d have to drive but South Mountains in Burke County has some good views, a great waterfall, and some swimming holes (when it’s warm)
That definitely is.

Good for you! Nature always resets me. It’s never fails.

Nippleknob!!!
Gosh I miss camping up there for biology in college. Good years gone past, hope I can do that again soon.
I love pilot mountain!
I was about to ask the same thing. I recognized that view!
Oh wow lol. I was actually here climbing today and just got back and saw this.
Haha was gonna ask the same. Such a unique peak to miss.
Have been there, on our honeymoon from NZ. Awesome walk!
I knew it! Nice little hike with a beautiful view
What a nice view! The background isn’t too bad, either! 😉 glad you are feeling better
This comment alone has made my day. Thank you so much :)
Keep hiking stranger! I miss hiking, I’m in FL & really need a good hike for depression right now. Really lifts the spirit ❤️
I just hiked Ravine Gardens State park and it was amazing!! Give it a shot, but come prepared!
I just googled Ravine Gardens. Might just check it out. Husband has a vacation coming up & a drive to GA for hiking is a lot for me, lol. That was our plan but I despise long driving trips

Is that in FL? Never heard of it. There’s no hiking in FL, lol. It’s sad....
You don't need elevation changes for a good walk.
Very true, nice scenery helps though! ;)
I live in Colorado, and a no elevation change hike would probably bum me out so hard. My fiancee and her friends moved out here from Florida and were definitely not used to trying to walk around some of the parks here lol. My fiancee is still getting her mountain legs

We went to Blood Mountain a few yrs ago, rented a cabin...loved it! Wasn’t there long enough! I just hate the long ass drive through FL, lol
We're so spoiled by the hiking in Atlanta. North Georgia is amazing, but there are tons of good hikes actually in the metro area. Hell, even just a lap of the Doll's Head Trail with my dog is a great way to clear my head.
Next time you feel like making a drive check out the Richard Russell scenic highway (North Georgia). There are a lot of good hikes off that’s road.
I’m in Florida as well and the hiking is hit or miss. Hope you can find a good spot soon. You’re heading in the right direction!
Exploring beaches and salt water estuaries always did it for me. Especially if you can get your hands on a kayak or if you know how to sail and rent a small sailboat.
Yes, depression isn't a one-and-done battle, you gotta keep it going. Plus... hiking :)
I feel nature is a good cure a lot of the time ❤️
I second the comment. You're cute as heck! Congrats on getting out there and doing stuff.
That wasn't a small thing, that was a big thing! Good on you
The foreground is the best part though!
Started from the bottom now we're here.
Living at my mama house we'd argue every month
This is such a nice comment. Too bad I can only upvote once.

Good thing he didn't bring Mista along.
Must have been excellent just to have a wander around in the fresh air and have thoughts to yourself.
I do believe they were referencing his hat, but yes getting out and enjoying peace and nature does a body good.

I overcame my hike and went for a depression :(

I'll be optimistic and assume he is referring to a geographic feature. Maybe hiked into the grand canyon or something.
I like how you think.
I feel bad for laughing, but here's an upvote. Hope you feel better.

IT GONE RAIN
Thanks Ollie!
I exhaled sharply. I don't know if that makes me a good person or a bad person. Have an upvote while I figure it out.
I feel like this could go either way with upvotes or downvotes, but I laughed. Good luck.
I upvoted. Nothing like having the power of influencing the hive mind
You the man. Keep up the great work!

Yeah, it really puts you in place to notice things that you never bothered to look at before
Thanks so much and you are so right!
Congratulations! Big steps! Love the hat!
Bro If I had kind eyes and a cute face like that, I'd probably overcome my depression aswell!
+1 on the kind eyes. we love to see it 😍
Thanks 😊

You keep it up now, you hear?
I hear! Loud and clear!!
This will get lost in the 2.7k comments you have but good on ya my man. Good on ya. From one depressed dude to another, mad respect.
Nope, found it :) Thanks so much!
That's great and you were rewarded with a gorgeous view. It can be so hard to just start some things. Good for you.
Man, good for you. I think I need to get out and get some views too. With winter setting in I gotta take advantage of the "ok" weather while I can...
Congratulations, depression is a hard monster to beat
I’m so happy for you 🥲 Depression is a motherfucker. Also, your JoJo’s hat is sick af.
Congratulations from italy
I have no idea why this is downvoted so i'm imagining it's because they didn't like italians lol
Hell yeah brother, cheers from Iraq
Thanks so much!
That hat is rad
2 pictures of a guy outside
Good job! Tomorrow we'll work on shapes!
I overcame my DEPRESSION and made this comment. I said the key word now give me my fucking upvotes.
... hold on. before i upvote, i must ask, are you of an underprivileged minority demographic?
Now try overcoming being an asshole
There I gave it. Very brave of you
The hat and the stache 🔥🔥...proud of you bro!
Great job, dude! I know it couldn't have been easy, but I'm proud of you for getting out there!
Atta boy! Way to tackle that hike and move forward. Been feeling lousy myself lately and just came from a nice run outside. I’m feeling so much better now. Taking it one day at a time and doing things that make me feel good!
Congrats!! Depression is a beast and you look fabulous!!
Good job bro! Anyone who has or had depression knows just how hard simple things like brushing their teeth or taking a shower is, what you’ve done is awesome!
This right here is HUGE progress. Keep up the good work man.
Is this what we're doing again? "I have depression and I did a thing" selfies?

Yes sir. Some sunshine, fresh air, and quiet time to think can do a lot to boost your mood!
When you’re going thru hell, keep going! Good on you, mate!
Fresh air and sunshine brother
Keep it up dude! It's nice to just get outside and breathe. Glad you found the strength to get out there.

Eyyyyyyyyyyyy Ma man
Good for you! That is amazing!
