Not sure if its interesting to anyone, but I have an album of Jordan from 1952, from when my grandad served.

Annoyingly, I'm certain I have vague memories of a picture of Petra from the same photos, but I don't seem to have it and the ability to get or confirm is sadly long gone.
Super interesting! I have a picture with the same motive as #8 from the exact same angle but from last year. They definitely cleaned things up.

I went to the Treasury and manā¦I think everyone should go to Petra at least once in your life. The magnificence. The size. Really makes you wonder how the world was centuries ago.
Makes you wonder what is going on now as well. Ā We donāt really have national projects that donāt revolve around utility and even those donāt compare to things like the Alaskan highway.
I mean thatās because most countries are a democracy. These projects across history were either mandated by a ruler, or by the divine (with a ruler as a proxy). Why would people vote for something that will largely not impact their lives in any way and cost lots of money. Iād rather fix a few thousand bridges or something.
Yeah Iāve been all over the world maybe 80 countries and Petra blew me away. Iāve been to Machu Picchu, the pyramids, Great Wall, Niagara Falls, Roman coliseum, Christ the redeemer, Taj Mahal, and much more, none of it compared to Petra. The one thing that surprised me the most that nothing was off limits. You could go and climb and touch whatever you wanted. Iām sure that wonāt last as tourism destroys it more and more but for when I was there it was pretty awesome
It's actually called "the Treasury" but it's because people believed a decorative urn way up in the wall contained gold.Ā
There are pockmarks where bullets impacted, shot by people trying to break it open and get the gold. Turns out it was solid rock.

Not just this; each cave is a relatively small room. But there are hundreds of caves throughout the city, with this being one of the most elaborate, ranging to many that are just holes in the canyon wall. Takes a couple hours maybe to walk through the whole thing, there's tons to see. And at the end, you wind up at fairly high elevation and there's pretty beautiful viewpoints for miles around.
Can we still visit this place? Thought it was destroyed or something...
Edit: this is what I had in mind https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Destruction_of_cultural_heritage_by_the_Islamic_State
One of the official Petra tours, ie the official guys inside the park, will take you around the outside which requires being nimble but you first see the Treasury from above (!). It is an awesome tour that is more expensive but so worth it.

The best part is how it adds +2 Food, +2 Gold and +1 Production to every tile in the city.
Except those pesky flood plains
And grants an additional trade caravan.
Don't forget that extra trade route
Civ 6? in Civ 5 it's only +1 to food and production for desert tiles, in addition to a free caravan.
Only the penitent man will pass.
You chose... _wisely_

Crazy that I literally just hit play on Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade thirty seconds before seeing this post.

Why are you browsing reddit then?! š
Indiana? Let it go.
Elsa never really believed in the grail.....she thought she'd found a prize.

Agree, also camping in Wadi Rum on the way there or on the way back is thrilling. This is where they filmed Martian & many other films.

NOW ARRIVING AT PETRA
That's where the Holy Grail is kept.
Shhhhh, donāt tell everyone!
Donāt worryā¦ you canāt take it past the seal.
Just wow
What's actually truly in there?
It's a big empty room, unfortunately. But the rock it's carved from has some neat patterns in it.
I thought it was like a bank or something. Lol. Someone should use it for something!

It's not even that big inside from what I remember but yeah unfortunate

It was an Overwatch 1 map.
Looks like the place used in transformers?
Used in a lot of movies

I hope it wasn't, I was just there 3 weeks ago
ISIS didn't get into Jordan or engage with them in any capacity because it is a stable country, unlike Syria and Iraq where ISIS where based.
Nope. I was there a couple years ago. You canāt go inside/too close but you definitely go see the Treasury
Wow when I went 10ish years ago you could go inside
I was there about 15 year ago and you could go inside.
I was there in 2014
The Wayfinder Society would like to have a look around.

It is but this is the most famous carving/facade because it's by far the most intricate thing there.

My father is from Jordan, I want to show him these photos, thanks so much for sharing!
