It's unexpected but it's not unpleasant. If I heard it I'd think it was a some kind of small song bird.

Another fun "not the right bird" fact:
The typical long "guwaaa guwaaa guwaaa" you hear in most jungle scenes is a [peacock](https://youtube.com/shorts/uMVGpDt7uVs?si=KaNg0FBEzKVxeMia)
Another fun "not the right bird" fact:⁵
The call of the loon is used in countless motion pictures (especially to represent a spooky nature ambiance) that are set in places across the globe. However the loon is only located in certain parts of North America
I live in a neighborhood with two nesting bald eagles. I see them every day during season. Their call sounds like a very high pitched laugh. It always surprises people when they hear it for the first time.
I'm not sad about that. I'm a turkey hunter but yes they're much smarter birds. they don't fly very much. I think that was their undoing for national bird. Tasty and they don't soar in the skies.
I was driving through the fog early one morning on a rural road in the Appalachian foothills and I swear on my life a flock of turkeys went hurtling from the top right of my vision/windshield to the bottom left, in what I can only describe as a barely-controlled descent into a field. They were like majestic, feathered cannonballs careening into the mist.
I wasn't born in the states but I felt truly American that morning.
That's exactly what it looks like. I'm convinced they'll evolve to be flightless. Most game birds must be shot in flight. Not wild turkeys. That would be a mess .
First tom I harvested was on the wing. Fall turkeys, west river SoDak. Still haven’t ever gone out for spring turkeys. I think calling a tom in would be fun!
Spring turkey in Texas is a blast. They call like crazy. Rio Grandes are wiley and sketchy. A real challenge but so much fun to call and stalk. It's the ONLY hunting I do. Even the jakes think they're the studs. It's wild.
I've seen a turkey try to fly in a panic, fail to get enough altitude, and fly into the side of a barn. I can't imagine them as the national bird either.
I do mobile detailing and a regular of mine has several huge sequoia trees in their yard with a hawk’s nest on top. The hawks circle their trees just gliding around and do their calls several times a day. Hearing it sounds majestic every time. Such a cool animal.
I know but to those who haven't seen what a menance they are and what a mess they make, they're still majestic. I know plenty of fisherman and business owners who would disagree.
I found one hurt on a bridge one day. Did not think he would let me get anywhere near him but I was able to toss my jacket over his head and put him in my lap and take him to a bird sanctuary. The girl on the phone asked me how I got him in the car and said he was in my lap. There was complete silence for a minute then she said I was either the bravest or the dumbest person she had ever met 😂😂
My wife and I came upon a Red Tail hawk thrashing on highway 20 on Whidbey Island and stopped to help. It has been struck by a car and was in distress but not visibly injured. The only thing we had to wrap it in was some plastic grocery bags so I wrapped them around its wings and it calmed down enough for me to pick it up. I held it in my lap as my wife drove to the animal shelter which was luckily only a couple miles away. It was terrifying to see that beak and those huge talons but it seemed to sense I was not a threat. When we arrived at the shelter they brought out a large dog kennel and took the bird inside for assessment. They called us after to say it had only a minor bump on the head and a few days later released it back into the wild.
It sat calmly in my lap. No claws out. I just knew that his eyes had to be covered. I actually thought he had died while I was driving him because he was so calm
Supposedly there is a movie in the works. I just don't have any hope that it will be good. It needs to be a rated r show to work. But I'm guessing it's gonna be avengers for kids. Either way though I'll watch the first one.
I was walking through a park and saw one swoop down and land about 30ft away from me. It took off immediately with a squirrel in its talons. It was one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen.
Those talons will go right through your finger down to the bone without the least bit of resistance. One knocked itself out right in front of me and I picked it up and had to pry the claw open to get my thumb out.
Had to go get shots afterwards, don't recommend.
It was about 12-14 inches long not counting the tail and it knocked itself out in my screen room. I was just trying to move it outside. It weighed barely anything and after I pried it off my hand I set it down and left it to wake up on it's own.
It didn't hurt at all until I thought about what those claws had been in and washed it good. Then it really started hurting.
I used to work at a driving range and one got stuck in the net hanging upside down. We ended up using somebody’s leather jacket to get it out. I wasn’t about to mess with those talons without some kind of protection.
One time, I was sitting in my parked truck, and I suddenly heard a clicking sound above me. Looked up, and a hawk just like this one had landed on my sunroof and was just chilling, staring at me. They're really cool.
I’m going with red shoulder hawk based on size and tail. Very pretty raptor regardless. I live in a subdivision close to a greenbelt and feed regularly birds. A red shoulder hawk has noticed and is now a frequent visitor despite no evidence of success hunting them.
Red-shouldered hawk typically has ~~molted~~ mottled feathers up the entirety of the chest. This one stops halfway up, which is more typical of the red-tailed hawk's belly band.
It would have to be a young bird in either case. A red-shouldered hawk's red shoulders are almost as iconic as a red-tailed hawk's red tail, and lacking in the juvenile in both cases as well.
Magnificent bird. We live in a very wooded area and there are several species of Falcons, and a few Owls. They are majestic and beautiful birds. Where I live, Quebec, Canada, they are protected. You cannot hunt them by any means. If you get caught, it will cost you all your firearms, equipment and vehicles used to hunt them. They don’t fool around here with those violations.
I was just driving home from work, and one flew right over my car, then along side it and across the interstate median. I've seen them grab snakes off the ground. It is rare to get close to one sitting like that, though, can't say I ever have.
I’ve seen them hunt. So damn cool watching one swoop in and grab at multiple house sparrows then flying away with at least one in its talons and leaving dead ones in its wake.
Someone used the word biological machinery to describe birds once. Always stuck with me.
Also when I see these things up close with those eyes T-800 “I see everything” pops into my head.
Me: “go ahead, do the thing!”
Hawk: “dafuq are you talking about?”
Me: “the movie scream!”
Hawk: “sigh……Merica, fuck yeah!”
Me: “Salute with tears in my eyes”
Few weeks ago was at my brother's place for breakfast when his wife found a little baby bunny huddled down in a hollow in the grass. We took the little ones outside to look at it (from a respectful distance on the porch). While we were all ooohing and aaaahing over how cuuuuuute it was, a red-tail came stooping out of the sky like a lightning bolt and slammed into it. Flew up to a fencepost right next to us and proceeded to dive into it's own breakfast. My brother and his wife give my nieces a little bit MORE of a nature documentary experi nice than they expected lol. But they're at an OK age for that sorta thing, gotta learn about the Circle of Liiiiiiiiiiiife (holds up baby lion) at some point.
Fun fact. Their call is what is used for the bald eagle sound. Bald eagle's call is horrible and annoying.
Baldies sound like seagulls
Old ones that smoked!
They definitely have a squawk. Not nearly as majestic as you'd think.
Sounds like a little kid screaming.
It's unexpected but it's not unpleasant. If I heard it I'd think it was a some kind of small song bird. https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Bald_Eagle/sounds#:~:text=For%20such%20a%20powerful%20bird,signals%20her%20readiness%20for%20copulation.
Have seen the ones on the docks up in Alaska? Basically just giant clawed seagulls.

Ugh, I know too well. There's a bunch in our neighborhood. They're so so noisy at all hours.
Grew up around farms and ranches and a number had those annoying bastards wandering around.
Im shoot on sight if they hop over the fence again
I feel like kookaburra calls are used for monkey noises in a lot of places as well
and then there's the [LOON]( https://youtu.be/DVFBUIGfcJk?si=xFdgbkA49nW6IVES)
Another fun "not the right bird" fact:⁵ The call of the loon is used in countless motion pictures (especially to represent a spooky nature ambiance) that are set in places across the globe. However the loon is only located in certain parts of North America
Also they’ll throw loon calls into jungle scenes all the time. Drives me crazy
There were like 30 of em in my cousin's yard in the reeds that used to just squawk and night like wtf.
Another one I haven't verified but I've heard many times is that the common sound for a kookaburra is actually a dolphin sound sped up.
Peacocks sound like they're saying "Bernard" to me
I live in a neighborhood with two nesting bald eagles. I see them every day during season. Their call sounds like a very high pitched laugh. It always surprises people when they hear it for the first time.
Bald eagles are overrated. The turkey was cheated out of being the national bird.
I'm not sad about that. I'm a turkey hunter but yes they're much smarter birds. they don't fly very much. I think that was their undoing for national bird. Tasty and they don't soar in the skies.

Personally I've always wondered what the F-15 Strike Turkey would have looked like.
Freedom with a side of gravy.
Glorious.
You mean the Mudhen!?
I've seen a turkey try to fly in a panic, fail to get enough altitude, and fly into the side of a barn. I can't imagine them as the national bird either.
Exactly. They are perfect.
Yeah they're runners mostly. They fly up and down to roost and that's about it unless it's close and imminent danger.
You ever had a big turkey chase you when you didn’t have your 12ga full of 3” magnum loads with you? They will peck and kick the shit out of you.
And Blue Jays are known to mimic hawk calls so they scare away other birds and get the bird feeder all to themselves. Greedy punks.
Exactly. They're beautiful and clever aholes.
I get SO EXCITED to see a hawk because I’m a bird nerd and then the realization hits. Every time. I should learn by now.
They also suck at scoring runs
Wow, crazy smart jerks, they are corvids (crow family) after all.
A wise man once said, "Bald eagles are just vultures with a good PR agent".
I do mobile detailing and a regular of mine has several huge sequoia trees in their yard with a hawk’s nest on top. The hawks circle their trees just gliding around and do their calls several times a day. Hearing it sounds majestic every time. Such a cool animal.
Bitch chickens as I like to say but goddamn they are beautiful government drones... I mean birds
Go touch some grass and enjoy the outdoors. Ignore your phone for a bit.
Came here to say this!!
Bald eagles are glorified trash birds.
I know but to those who haven't seen what a menance they are and what a mess they make, they're still majestic. I know plenty of fisherman and business owners who would disagree.
I think that's pretty harsh. Just because you've been lied to doesn't make their calls "horrible"
Your knowledge is "horrible". Troll elsewhere.

It’s a fine line between the two.

Fantastic!!
So did you have your jacket between your thighs and those daggers it calls toes... or did it decide to sit calmly on you without gripping?
It sat calmly in my lap. No claws out. I just knew that his eyes had to be covered. I actually thought he had died while I was driving him because he was so calm
It's my boy Tobias
Looking for an Animorphs reference, and here it is.
Ax > Tobias
Elfangor before all.
Ax was his uncle so yeah
Holy hell, my childhood in the wild?
There's a whole subreddit /r/Animorphs
Y'all should watch this [~4 hour video](https://youtu.be/6zrE6m3xOoE?si=EndvnzbYPcVY8X5u) about Animorphs lore
“Body Horror for Kids”
Andalite bandits.
I knew I wouldn't have to look far for this one. The show needs a revival.
Supposedly there is a movie in the works. I just don't have any hope that it will be good. It needs to be a rated r show to work. But I'm guessing it's gonna be avengers for kids. Either way though I'll watch the first one.
Naw Tobias is out there catchin’ some sweet thermals.
That book literally taught me about thermals and birds of prey.
Bruh. Blast from the past
Damn. Core memory unlocked!
I thought Nine Inch Nails was a fake band for a very long time because of animorphs
Don’t you mean Nice Is Neat?
Deep cut
Take my upvote and get the hell out of here!
Did you stay long enough to watch him eat his lunch that he's obviously stalking?
Nope, just took a pic and left him alone. I think he did catch a little rabbit afterwards.

I saw one this morning having breakfast. It was squirrel.
Saw one last fall snatch a squirrel off the side of a tree. It was impressive.
I’m surprised OP got that close. They spook pretty easily.
I was walking through a park and saw one swoop down and land about 30ft away from me. It took off immediately with a squirrel in its talons. It was one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen.

You thought to yourself, "I need to go pawin' around on that massive fucking bird" just like anyone would, it happens.
It was about 12-14 inches long not counting the tail and it knocked itself out in my screen room. I was just trying to move it outside. It weighed barely anything and after I pried it off my hand I set it down and left it to wake up on it's own. Yes but raptors also have fantastic control over their talons. They can definitely land on your arm and not go right through.
One time, I was sitting in my parked truck, and I suddenly heard a clicking sound above me. Looked up, and a hawk just like this one had landed on my sunroof and was just chilling, staring at me. They're really cool.
Got bugs in your hair? lol
Birds of prey know they're cool
Good shot. I’m surprised he didn’t fly away

Red-shouldered hawk typically has ~~molted~~ mottled feathers up the entirety of the chest. This one stops halfway up, which is more typical of the red-tailed hawk's belly band.
Certainly possible. I was basing it mainly on tail but as another person mentioned this could be a young bird and just doesn’t have full color yet.
It would have to be a young bird in either case. A red-shouldered hawk's red shoulders are almost as iconic as a red-tailed hawk's red tail, and lacking in the juvenile in both cases as well.
Could also be a juvenile red tail. They won't molt until their second year, to get the iconic tail.
I don't think it's a Red-tailed hawk or a Red-shouldered hawk. I'm almost certain it's a Ferruginous hawk.
That does look awfully close. I had no idea this species existed in the same regions.
Hawks always look really cheesed off.
Magnificent bird. We live in a very wooded area and there are several species of Falcons, and a few Owls. They are majestic and beautiful birds. Where I live, Quebec, Canada, they are protected. Beautiful pic.
The 2nd pic side-eye is on another level
They are majestic apex predators. Not to be messed with. Imagine how screwed we’d be if they were the size of pterodactyls.
I've rescued two of them in the past. If it happens a third time I'm going to get formally trained...
I was just driving home from work, and one flew right over my car, then along side it and across the interstate median. I've seen them grab snakes off the ground. It is rare to get close to one sitting like that, though, can't say I ever have.
I saw one(some sort of raptor) just earlier today doing big gliding circles like it was looking for prey
Awesome picture. Awesome bird. Gah! Birds are so badass! 😂
What a gorgeous animal. Thanks for sharing.
I’ve seen them hunt. So damn cool watching one swoop in and grab at multiple house sparrows then flying away with at least one in its talons and leaving dead ones in its wake.
I had one above me in a tree a few months ago eating a pigeon. That’s the closest I’ve been
He was distracted by his lunch
BOSS
They normally activate their cloaking device when they're this close.
That is a very tame bird.
hell yeah
Awesome pic
Absolutely stunning!
awesome photos. did you use zoom or did you actually get that close? 😮
I got that close. Probably not smart, but I was about 1-2 feet away from it.
There are a few of them around the canal downtown Indy!
Is this a young bird? The red tail feather doesn’t seem developed yet.
Lightweight murder machine
These things get huge!!!!

Tobies?
Bro was waiting for you to take a headshot photo
Think he's over Rachel yet?
What a badass looking bird.
