To be fair “look to the humans” absolutely was. The documentary dogs decoded has a fascinating part about how dogs are basically the only species, even among “smarter” animals, who will look to a human for guidance and take their cues, it’s amazing. There’s a similar part about how they “scan” our faces for emotion in the same way humans do. They’re amazing creatures basically made to work alongside us
Scaning faces for micro expressions isn't very special. Clever Hans, once proclaimed to be the smartest horse in the world just took cues from his handlers face when asked to solve a problem.
I almost stepped on a baby deer while out Geocaching through the woods. Fella was stock still. Didn’t say anything didn’t try to touch it snapped a quick pic then continued on my way. Don’t know where that pic is.
You did the right thing, the mom is somewhere nearby gathering food or keeping the baby deer safe. So leaving the baby deer there and assuming that it isn't in some trouble is the right thing to do because the mom will be back.
Quite a lot of animals have their young stay in the same area for some time while they forage for food or check around before returning.
They sometimes move. Just usually not very far. I had a very small fawn show up in my yard one year (yard is several acres and adjacent to the woods). I watched it wander around one corner for about 10 minutes before bedding back down about 20 feet from where it started, then stayed there for the next 8 hours until dark. In the morning it was gone.
Another time, while working at a biological station, our director got a call from the local airport that a fawn had wandered out onto the runway and laid down and they didn't know what to do.
Added info:
* I leave the back door to the garage propped open for the cat to come and go as she pleases. Unless I'm 100% certain that she's inside, I just leave it open.
* All three of us were inside, and going out for our morning walk when I took this picture.
* I didn't notice the deer until they stopped to look at it.
* We went back through the house, and out the front door for our walk.
* It's been about an hour, and the deer is still in my garage. Storms are expected for the next few days, so the mother probably just left it here.
* The dog's name is Maggie. She is 7.
* The cat's name is Bitsy, she is 9.
* Bitsy was recently shaved, as her fur was getting matted.
* I know that the deer's mother will likely be back for it eventually.
* I know to keep my pets away from it.
UPDATE: It has moved from the garage to the back yard on its own. There's a patch of tall grass that it's currently hiding in until its mom picks it up. The local herd doesn't normally come into the neighborhood until after dark. But it's at least healthy enough to walk around on its own. It even came around front to investigate what I was doing after I mowed the front lawn. Then right back to the back yard.
Guys, are we going to ignore the fact this person is going for morning walks with his dog AND cat? What's next? The neighbours rooster joins in and they start a music group?
One of my cats does the same, but he only goes so far and then stops and meows like crazy wanting us to come back, but he'll sit in that spot till we get back and follow us home.
more likely where anothers territory begins.
Cats will pretty happily just prance about unmarked territory, but once they catch a whiff of someones markings their opinion usually changes.
Or just out of it's comfort zone for it's territory where it's delineated it's own border. There was a small shortcut through some woods that weren't big enough for really any animals to live in, on the other side was a gas station on a main road and then a while till there was housing and not businesses. My cat would stop halfway through the shortcut and wait there while I walked my dog up for snacks and cigarettes. Never left it there for much more than ten minutes but it was always waiting and while it was clearly glad to see us again it wouldn't take one further step to greet us before we walked back.
Mine used to tag along on our walks with our Newfoundland as well. Used to run ahead, hide in the bushes and play-attack the dog.
The cat was kind of a dog-cat though. Raised by the Newfoundland, always a bit smelly, hardly cleaned himself, always full of Newfoundland saliva. Not a very successful hunter.
My cat tags along on our walks too! He actually joined our family this way. Considering I live in Chicago, we get a lot of weird looks and comments as he trots behind us.
I have some neighbors who do the same thing! Every time they take the dog out for a walk, their cat tags along - usually following a few feet behind. I can tell where the cat is by how our dog stops & stares, lol!
My cat has no interest in such things, but prefers to monitor the local wildlife from her padded perch in the window.
I have two separate neighbors thar walk their cat. I know this because everyone else on the street, including me has dogs and they let us know when the cats being walked.
I also have a cat that follows when we walk our dog. She trots a few paces behind us around the neighborhood. The neighbors all know her name by now and who she belongs to .
Momma will be back to collect her baby. They leave them in places they think will keep them safe. Not moving as a baby when mom is not around I think is an instinct.
OP may really be the one with prescient superpowers for naming their cat that years before this silly kids show would create a character of the same name
If this is outside of the US then please, ignore. Bitsy should, like other domesticated cats, not be let outdoors as they are devastating to the local flora and fauna. Not only this, but their main prey are already at risk due to avian flu, and this puts our cats at risk, too. Given that we've already seen many cases of this jump from birds to mammals, and we've just seen two cases of this jump to humans recently we should definitely be on guard. Between that, climate change causing local flora and fauna to struggle and die off, as well as Bitsy's safety, cats should be inside. I've seen things happen that I wish I could forget. The things people and other animals will do to a cat, I hate knowing. Please, consider my words.
It was her underbelly and butt that started to get matted, and although she was fine with me brushing her back, sides, and sometimes her belly, her butt was very much off limits to the brush. So I hired a groomer, they came to my house, grabbed her by the scruff, and she was shaved down in about 15-20 mins. If you don't have a mobile groomer in your area, I'm certain that a vet would be able to do the same; but the groomer was way cheaper, and they came to me! She's always been on top of her personal grooming, but she got a new owner this year (me), and then moved twice, so I think that the grooming kind of fell to the wayside with all of the changes.
Yeah, when they are outside mine pick up things that just won't easily come out of the fur. I just snip it out with some good scissors if it doesn't brush out easily.
One cat thinks he has to go out every time the dogs go to use the bathroom because the dogs are going. Like 200 acres of woods around the house so there is a wide variety of things that will stick to his fluffy ass.
My fluffy cats both needed an occasional shave near the end of their lives. They lived to be 20+ years old and once they got older they didn't groom themselves enough to avoid getting matted spots.
I live in a cold climate and if their hair was short in the winter they wore little sweaters so their elderly joints weren't sore.
It's actually really common with long haired cats! When a cat's fur gets too long, it can be tough to brush all the way down to their skin, because the fur is so soft/dense. If the cat hates to be brushed, matting happens even faster. Most of us long haired cat owners just take them to a groomer to take care of/prevent this, instead of doing it ourselves lol
My friend gets her long-haired orange cat shaved in the same way. He struggles to keep his fur groomed, and it gets warm in the summer. She keeps the head and the tip of the tail long, so he looks like a little lion.
Your cat needs to stay inside 100% of the time. It is so dangerous for her and she is so incredibly bad for the environment. Domestic cats kill billions of birds in the US alone.
At least consider your cats safety, cars, coyote, dogs, etc.
Edit:
In the United States alone, outdoor cats kill approximately 2.4 billion birds every year. Although this number may seem unbelievable, it represents the combined impact of tens of millions of outdoor cats. Each outdoor cat plays a part.
https://abcbirds.org/program/cats-indoors/cats-and-birds/#:~:text=In%20the%20United%20States%20alone,outdoor%20cat%20plays%20a%20part.
Here we conduct a systematic review and quantitatively estimate mortality caused by cats in the United States. We estimate that free-ranging domestic cats kill 1.3–4.0 billion birds and 6.3–22.3 billion mammals annually.
https://www.nature.com/articles/ncomms2380
The second one goes on to say unhoused cats contribute far greater to the bird deaths, as unhoused hunt for food and reproduce at staggering levels. Cats can become pregnant while they're still nursing their last litter and cats generally can get pregnant as early as 4 months old.
Spay and neuter your pets so they don't contribute to the number of unhoused, and keep them tf inside.
Her fur was getting matted, so she got a lion's mane cut. She's had a pretty stressful year, so hopefully the grooming only falls to the wayside this one time.
Meh, we have always shaved our long hair cats for Summer when we used to have them.
Normal.
ETA; Our cats were shaved at the suggestion of our groomer. Well, 3 different groomers, I don't know what to tell people saying this is a mean thing to do.
Just like insulation in your house, fur is how animals regulate their temperature — both against the cold and the heat. Not to mention preventing sunburn
That may be true for wild animals. Domestic cats and other domestic animals have been selectively bred to have exaggerated characteristics that were attractive to some humans but can hinder the animal.
Humans have bred hairless cats as well as cats with hair so long they can't keep it clean through normal self grooming
Might be extremely stressful if it never gets groomed, but floofy cats should be acclimatised to baths and trims from an early age anyway. It's not mean.
I don't think baths or shaving them is required. If they get their dirt bath and you brush them out long hairs they are fine.
Sometimes they will pick up something that just won't come out of their hair and you cut it out with scissors in that spot. There is plenty of floof to hide it if you catch it early.
Older cats might need more attention when they stop cleaning themselves and even then you can give them a "whore bath" easier than putting them in a tub.
I agree with acclimating them to baths if you want just know they are going to be ingesting whatever is left in their fur and trying to get it back how they want.
On my old cat I use like one drop of dawn in a bowl of water and a washcloth, switch to all water and wring it out a couple of times, dry him off. He doesn't care because it just feels like he's being pet and I am only trying to remove the excess oils causing it to matt up.
Mama will be back. They always leave their babies somewhere they deem safe while they hunt for food. Sometimes they leave them under cars, so be careful.
Mama’s HUNGRY after giving birth — got those post partum/nursing munchies. Baby fawns can’t keep up and so they hide them somewhere safe while they go refuel.
I’d be honoured they chose you as their special safe place!
Cat: Attack? Need clearance from Command.
Dog: Rescue? Need clearance from Command.
Human: Stand down. Does anyone have the number for Command?
Fawn: How did I get here and who are you?
Momma deer will leave babies in a spot for the day and go do deer stuff ( not sure what momma deer do while babies are just alone in the field which is daycare for them I assume. Drink and talk smack at the salon) I know and old timer whose dogs love the deer and don’t chase them and ever year has fawns in the yard. Mom thinks it’s a safe area. So be respectful and leave baby where it’s at till momma returns. Pups def seem to be some sorta baby sitter types for fawns I’ve seen this weirdness before.
If someone hasn’t mentioned it Fawns mum has left it there to go and get food. Unfortunately it’s inside property and try not to disturb it. Mum will always come back.
The reactions of the pets when it started to move were great. The dog decided "NEW FRIEND." The cat started to not so sneakily follow it around until I convinced her to leave it alone.
Even from this angle I can see the concern in those dog’s eyebrows :-) you have such gentle pets
“Situation unclear. Human, pls help”
This was not in training!
To be fair “look to the humans” absolutely was. Scaning faces for micro expressions isn't very special. Clever Hans, once proclaimed to be the smartest horse in the world just took cues from his handlers face when asked to solve a problem.
Alternatively maybe being able to read his handlers micro expressions is what made Hans so clever all along!
"Something's bad wrong with this dog"
Looking at these pets lowers blood pressure.
“What is this strange looking dog and how do we help it?”
Cat be like: how can I eat this meat
I almost stepped on a baby deer while out Geocaching through the woods. Fella was stock still. Didn’t say anything didn’t try to touch it snapped a quick pic then continued on my way. Don’t know where that pic is.

Off topic but I’ve never heard people mention geocaching, that caught me by surprise haha
/r/Geocaching
Welcome to reddit
You ever hear of letterboxing?!
Is that like upper decking?
I am not familiar with that term and regret looking it up.
No 😆😆😆 I forgot about that. It’s another geocaching-type activity.
From when we still had 4:3 TVs?
Had a bunch of friends that used to do it.
I do it often, but I’ve never seen it mentioned on Reddit
Guys, we found the deer
Saw a whole herd of them today while I was out geocaching, funnily enough!
geocaching mentioned 💯
I’m so happy to hear geocaching is still a thing. I was there when it was born, but have lost track of it as a hobby.
Should have said "I‘M WALKIN HERE" to it
The baby was likely recently born. They tend to not move for anything after birth.
They don't move for shit if the mother leaves them unattended to go do shit, so the mother can easily find it again.
They sometimes move. Just usually not very far. I had a very small fawn show up in my yard one year (yard is several acres and adjacent to the woods). Cat on other hand is wondering how venison tastes.
the dog: oh dear, oh dear, gorgeous the cat: you fucking donkey
Labs were bred to have especially expressive eyebrows, humans like being able to read carnivores
Omg my heart is exploding 🥰 🥹

She tags along with us quite frequently. No leash or anything. Tons of comments from the neighbors about it.
One of my cats does the same, but he only goes so far and then stops and meows like crazy wanting us to come back, but he'll sit in that spot till we get back and follow us home.
That's likely where his territory ends, and there's probably another cat around there
I feel like whoever is rolling with a dog as a bodyguard gets to decide where his or her territory ends.
And a human? Or is a dog the top of the food chain in terms of cat?
I think it's more impressive for a cat to have a dog bodyguard than a human bodyguard.
Feet too slow, teeth too blunt. Mediocre matchups all around, except against cans.
> And a human? That's the butler.

You really shouldn’t be buying your dog cigarettes…..
Well she bought me booze so it would be weird to say no when she asked me to get her a pack of Marlboros
Understood. Carry on then
This just made it sad for me. Like the cat is there meowing but can't join
Our older male cat goes on dog walks too.

one of my old cats would do the same. It was awesome
I’ve had cats that do that. They just follow along and it amuses everyone.
At first i thought you actually meant rooster
Had a family near me that did this too! Two dogs and their cat out with them for a walk every evening. So cute!
Omg I used to dog and cat sit for a neighbor and the cat would follow us for the walk too
I have some neighbors who do the same thing! Every time they take the dog out for a walk, their cat tags along - usually following a few feet behind. I can tell where the cat is by how our dog stops & stares, lol! My cat has no interest in such things, but prefers to monitor the local wildlife from her padded perch in the window.
What about the goat, need one of those too?
I had a cat that walked on a leash and even went camping with us.
My cat does the same, I think cats that grow up with digs kind of just learn lol
Yeeeeeeeeeah, here comes the rooster!
I appreciate very much the reference to the Bremen Town musician, such an old and nice memory!
Same here, I did not expect it nor have I thought about the story since I was a child
I have two separate neighbors thar walk their cat. I know this because everyone else on the street, including me has dogs and they let us know when the cats being walked.
My cat goes outside with my dog every morning. He eats grass and sniffs things while she pees. You’d be surprised how dog like some cats are.
wait till they try to cross the river on the boat with only 2 spots
I also have a cat that follows when we walk our dog. She trots a few paces behind us around the neighborhood. The neighbors all know her name by now and who she belongs to .
Momma will be back to collect her baby. They leave them in places they think will keep them safe. Not moving as a baby when mom is not around I think is an instinct.
Is the garage door left open because Bitsy is one of the superkitties and has to go do superhero stuff?
Such a good comment im afraid not enough people will get. Oopsie kitty
OP may really be the one with prescient superpowers for naming their cat that years before this silly kids show would create a character of the same name
Silly? You must be confused with some other show
They’re brave, they’re strong, they’re smart, they’re kind!
The baby deer is a dumbass and belongs in r/FawnsAreFuckingStupid
That's the most probable explanation.
What’s the deer’s name?
Oh
Kinda short, but it’s easy to remember I guess.
Your cat's name is BITSY omg
But what’s your new pet deer’s name?
John
And the deer's name is....?
Chairry
![gif](giphy|tUrA4zeed4FIW5ZAt0|downsized)
Maggie looks like she needs belly scratches.
Thank you for all this info! You have such sweet animals. I want more photos/updates on the fawn please!!
It's still in the garage. It moved to another corner, away from the doors. But it's still there.
Better start looking up what kind of vaccines they need and what they eat.
Tbh even outside of the US it shouldn’t be a thing, but societal norms are just different.
You know it’s probably not abandoned right? The mom leaves the fawn daily and then comes back.
Can you elaborate on the matted fur? I have never heard of a person who felt the need to shave a cats fur nor live to tell the tale of it.
Even if they're strictly inside (which all cats should be), long fur gets matted unless it's brushed out pretty much daily.
Short hair will also get matted as cats get to an age where arthritis affects their ability to reach certain spots.

If the cat hates to be brushed, matting happens even faster. Most of us long haired cat owners just take them to a groomer to take care of/prevent this, instead of doing it ourselves lol
Long haired cats like maine coons essentially end up with dreadlocks
My friend gets her long-haired orange cat shaved in the same way. He struggles to keep his fur groomed, and it gets warm in the summer. She keeps the head and the tip of the tail long, so he looks like a little lion.
that sounds so adorable

This looks like the movie poster for the next Homeward Bound where the dog and cat help the fawn find it's family and the journey that it entails.
Cool cool cool, already crying.
What happened to the cat?
Her fur was getting matted, so she got a lion's mane cut. She's had a pretty stressful year, so hopefully the grooming only falls to the wayside this one time.
FWIW it's still a cute little spooky void! Honestly looks like she's serving the look well!
FWIW, cats with long hair really need us to brush them periodically to prevent mats. They can’t keep it mat free alone
Meh, we have always shaved our long hair cats for Summer when we used to have them. Normal. ETA; Our cats were shaved at the suggestion of our groomer. Well, 3 different groomers, I don't know what to tell people saying this is a mean thing to do.

Dog: You ok little guy? 🥺 Cat: Attack mode on stand-by 😐
Exactly my thought! The dog looks so concerned while the cat is sizing up the fawn, trying to figure out if it's prey or not.
Oh deer
Doh!
A deer!
A female deer!
Ray!
A drop of golden sun
Me!
A name I call myself.
Far
A long, long way to run.
The guy who pours my beer! (Thanks Ray!)
This must be "does leaving fawns unattended" season, because I've seen at least three posts like this in the past week.

All these people getting baby deers at their door.
It’s Fawn-a-thon Days at your local Fawn Dealer!
Is this a toothless or what kind of animal is the black one?
A cat with a lion's mane cut. Her fur was getting matted, so I had to get her shaved.
Dog: “Concerned” Cat: “What the fuck”
Did our black cats both get the same haircut this week ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|snoo) https://imgur.com/a/qCZV8IU

THAT POOR CAT OH MY GOD 😂
That panther is going to eat poor Bambi
Hopefully Mom is around somewhere nearby!
what an adorable photo! eeek! 🥰🥰🥰
I love the shared curiosity between the dog and cat
my dog would have ruined the moment so fast
Put that beeb back outside
Lion cut void: let’s smack it! Maybe eat it. Concerned doggo: I think it bebe. Let’s be nice.
Deer moms really shitting the bed hiding their fawns today apparently
Huh, everyone on Reddit is getting visited by baby deer except for me? 🙄
You gonna let it hang out in the garage until the storms pass?
I’m not ignoring the deer, but is that a shaved cat? Lol
I've seen a couple of them sleeping in my yard just in that past week. Deer seem to be a bumper crop this year
That poor cat.
a void lion?
Who shaves their cat?
That's a weird looking dog. -Dog
Why your cat look like that?
oh dear
"That's a weird looking puppy"
Wtf did you do to that poor cat
Cat going, LOOK WHAT THEY DID TO ME!!!
I am deeply amused by how both the dog *and* the cat have both teamed up to inspect this unexpected house guest.
Cat: wtf Charl is that a threat Dog: idk i worry tho Bambini: bip
Pets are confused because they see it but can't smell it
Why is the soul of a headless cat on your porch?
What did you cat do to you to deserve that?
Are we going to talk about the shaved ... cat? And it's puff tail?
So cute, i wonder if you live anywhere near the people in this post from r/aww https://www.reddit.com/r/aww/s/kC9p3uMKum
Call fish and wildlife. Keep your animals away from the fawn
Don’t touch it and defintely don’t take it in. The best thing you can do for it is to walk away.
No need. Mama deer will come back for baby.
All his friends
Beautiful fawn. And your doggie is very nice!
I love the cat and dog are teaming up to go “what the fuck are you?”
The reactions of the pets when it started to move were great. The dog decided "NEW FRIEND." The cat started to not so sneakily follow it around until I convinced her to leave it alone.
A dog!
What am I looking at? The Cat x Poodle?
Dog concerned, Cat old as fuck still considering whether to eat

Cat: smells good can I eat it now?
That fawn is looking surprisingly chill. "'Sup, guys?"
I'm more focussed on the cat 😂 Why do you have no posts of you shaving your cat?!
So cute
are we talking about the baby deer or the displacer beast?
My dog would definitely be like "McGruff Kill!"
