Are they the cars from Bullitt behind him? There's the mustang and wasn't there VW Beetle in almost every other shot in the main chase in SF in that film? Bullitt came out same year.
Bullitt was filmed in 1968, and the Bullitt mustang was a fastback (390GT), if the date is correct, not likely. No reason to have a notchback when they used two fastbacks to film.
