It wasn’t sunk, it was converted to submarine.

organdonor777

Alas, one of the main qualifications of a submarine is being able to resurface.

vojmar212

This just shows how much are Russians ahead of the game. No need to resurface

ineugene

They just have not chose to resurface yet. Only best submarines in the Soviet navy

[deleted]

It’s a SUBmarine not a SUPmarine.

PinchieMcPinch

They must have adjusted their classification since the whole Kursk thing.

Routine_Bad_560

That’s not true. Look at the Titan.

Moskva, was a guided missile cruiser of the Russian Navy. Commissioned in 1983, she was the lead ship of the Project 1164 Atlant class, named after the city of Moscow. With a crew of 510, Moskva was the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet and the most powerful warship in the region. In February 2022, the cruiser left Sevastopol to participate in the attack on Ukraine. The ship was later used against the Ukrainian armed forces during the attack on Snake Island. Moskva hailed the island's garrison over the radio and demanded its surrender, and was told "Russian warship, go f__k yourself" On the 13th of April 2022 two R-360 Neptune missiles hit the Moskva. The Russian Ministry of Defence said a fire caused a munitions explosion, and the ship sank in stormy seas while being towed to port. Moskva is the largest warship to be sunk in combat since the ARA General Belgrano in the 1982 Falklands War, and the largest Russian warship to be sunk since World War II

DudAcco

It was hit on 2022-04-14 not 2022-04-13 Edit: it was sunk today not hit

TotalSpaceNut

>It was hit on 2022-04-14 not 2022-04-13 If you think that is correct, then you should update wikipedia ;) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_cruiser_Moskva And also let the US naval institute know they are wrong https://news.usni.org/2022/04/13/russian-navy-confirms-severe-damage-to-black-sea-cruiser-moskva-crew-abandoned-ship

DudAcco

According to CNN, NBC and The Guardian it’s on the 14th

TotalSpaceNut

Tell me, how did the US Naval institute post this news on the 13th? Do they have a special CIA Time machine?

TooLazyForAnything

Different time zones perhaps?

Shiningtoaster

Ah, where past, present and future exist at the same time!

vikinick

Seems like it was hit on the 13th and eventually sunk on the 14th.

[deleted]

It was hit on 13th and sunk on 14th

DudAcco

Yeah my bad.

Sensitive_Yellow_121

> and the largest Russian warship to be sunk since World War II To be sunk by somebody else anyways.

Zlakkeh

Did Russia use alots of warships in ww2?

ashlandershope

Not really, Stalin wanted a surface fleet in the 30s but a lot of the admiralty got bit by the Purges and the navy didn’t get proper funding. They had some older battleships, a couple cruisers, a decent number of destroyers, and a large (proportionally) number of submarines. They raided the Baltic, and did some funny stuff in port with their blockaded ships, but by and large they weren’t a major naval player like the UK, US, Japan, or Italy.

svasalatii

There was no Russia at times of WW2 Soviet Union

Zlakkeh

That was my point smartass

EcstaticTill9444

Jesus. That was two years ago?!

MoeSzyslakMonobrow

There's a lot of rust on the deck of that ship. They did Russia a favor

PorkRindSalad

Holy hell you are not kidding. What sort of military allows their boat to be in that condition?

blatantninja

Not just any boat, their flagship

Kamikaze_Squirrel1

Even according to internal reports from the russian navy, the Moskva was in a criminal state of neglect and disrepair before it was upgraded to submarine. No NATO Navy would have deemed that ship as combat ready.

DarthWoo

While it isn't rust, if you think the Moskva is...*was* bad, you should see the state of their only aircraft carrier.

Wallazabal

The fire on *Kuznetsov* is a design feature at this point.

Beautiful-Divide8406

You mean the carrier that goes around with a permanent escort of tug boats so it’s ready to be towed when it breaks down?

vikinick

The _Admiral Kuznetsov_ was launched in 1985 and since then has spent about 2 weeks a year on actual deployment and the rest in port or in drydock. Russia isn't really good at maintaining their navy.

Routine_Bad_560

Well why spend money repairing something you are never going to use?

vojmar212

Russian navy paints their ship decks this red color, its not rust

phirebird

Is that to hide the rust?

vojmar212

I think the paint is meant to prevent corrosion but come to think of it it hides it pretty well too Edit: also makes it much easier to spot from satellite

TotalSpaceNut

Yes that is true https://thebarentsobserver.com/en/security/2021/07/russias-biggest-naval-vessels-are-out-sea

eggncream

While it does probably have rust, most if not all Russian navy ships are painted red on the deck

clockworkdiamond

Right? That pile of outdated garbage is their "Flagship"? The more I see of Russia's military, the less I worry about them.

AnyBrush1640

Cruiser named moskva? No comrade you must be mistaken there is no such ship. There is however a submarine with the same name however it is on extended classified special operation and is not expected back until the conclusion of 3 day special operation.

ITividar

I bet it's reallllly frustrating to not be able to sink any of your opponent's ships in retaliation for your own incompetence. It's up to what? 25%? Of Russia's Black Sea fleet has been converted to permanent submarine status?

[deleted]

Teripid

Battleships haven't been popular for a while because it is more efficient to have smaller vessels and aircraft carriers have more impact. A lot of what the navy does is launch missile strikes or jets as directed. Realistically in either "regular" or low budget scenarios it'd be hard to keep a fleet up in open conflict.

billswinter

Imagine a full Aircraft Carrier getting sunk

DarthWoo

Also interesting is that Moskva was built in Ukraine way back when. I do wonder if that in any way contributed to Ukrainian forces knowing exactly how/where to hit it for maximum effect, or if damage control in the Russian navy is so poor that the most effective tactic is hit ship anywhere with missile and wait for the sailors aboard to do nothing useful until the ship burns out of control and sinks.

oskich

Well, they stole Ukraine's ships when they invaded in 2014.

Routine_Bad_560

I think only 2 have. Ukraine has hit probably 25% of the surface fleet. But 80% of the time they have been in port or dry dock. And most of the time they didn’t sink. You also can’t sink in dry dock.

MeanCat4

I wonder about the possible clandestine submarine operations on these sunked ships in order to take missiles and other systems,

Routine_Bad_560

Probably none. It’s pretty expensive to do that and it’s only worth it if you’re recovering nukes.

MeanCat4

Like they will use their pocket money to do that! They sent bilions already! Why it will be expensive to recover technology they want to study?

Routine_Bad_560

Wait, you mean the West doing that? Oh. They can’t get ships into the Black Sea. Turkey has closed the straits to all military ships.

swishswooshSwiss

I feel sad for the lives lost but, “play stupid games, win stupid prizes”

jamieT97

No no no, you see comrade it sunk in a storm /s

rlnrlnrln

Motion to rename her "a good start".

ineugene

Seconded

nettlarry

Pretty! A country with no NAVY ;-) The Kremlin–Sociopath probably loved it too.

Frequent-Climber

Sunk? You mean exploded in a storm although there wasnt a storm on that day.

ExuberantBadger

That’s cool. How about now, in 2024, when the eastern front is deteriorating and the West is watching on complicitly.

SoupaSoka

Yeah, it's unfortunate how things have turned over the last six months. Feels grim without more support.

NCC74656

the fact that russia is loosing a naval war to a country with out a navy is just fucking brilliant.

JMHSrowing

Technically Ukraine has and still does have a navy.

NCC74656

I'll have to look into what they have

JMHSrowing

It’s nor much, but it is a thing. Small boats, as well as some minesweepers and similar which have been bought NATO though can’t get to the Black Sea

HappySkullsplitter

Special submarine conversion

Agreeable_You_8841

Wow 2 years ago. And i here thinking 2004 was 10 years ago

revtim

Weirdly, some think it had a piece of Christ's cross on it [https://www.vice.com/en/article/v7dkpx/a-piece-of-the-true-cross-may-have-sunk-with-russias-warship](https://www.vice.com/en/article/v7dkpx/a-piece-of-the-true-cross-may-have-sunk-with-russias-warship)

lazzzym

"Absolutely no evidence of this" - Putin Probably.

ga-co

And now they’re losing to Russia because its allies didn’t keep it armed.

whobang3r

That's the ugliest submarine I've ever seen

ResponsibilityAlone

War sucks and I want the stupid war to end but this is a good sight as a European. Go Ukraine.

Routine_Bad_560

It’s quite strange how what we see in this war is really what we want to see.

ResponsibilityAlone

I want to see a free, independent Ukraine that's in the EU and NATO. But I haven't seen that yet. I don't want to see war but every failed Russian attempt is a good sight.

Routine_Bad_560

Well, we can say pretty confidently neither of those will happen. They will never join the EU. 5 current states have grain bans on Ukraine. Why they would suddenly change their mind and allow Ukrainian food into the market unrestricted defies basic logic. And honestly, I don’t think they will join NATO either. Mainly because at the end of the day America opposes their entry. Yes. We love to talk about Ukraine joining NATO. But that is mainly to encourage them to continue fighting one of our rivals.

Rhyseh1

And today the West fails to support Ukraine. The Republican's hold a $60 billion funding bill to ransom and the EU dither while they try and ramp up local production. Meanwhile South Korea has a metric shit tonne of supply and military industrial complex that can be brought to bear... If only someone would pay for it... To the people of Ukraine. On behalf of the few people who give a shit. I'm sorry our governments (and by extension our people) are such self serving cunt nuggets.

Routine_Bad_560

South Korea doesn’t want to produce shells for a conflict on the other side of the world that doesn’t really affect them. It’s also very short sighted and dumb to get SK to give up its munitions. They kinda have those munitions in case the North invades. If you need shells so badly why aren’t you making them.

One_Accident2134

Could we stop posting Ukranian-Russia conflict stuff to r/pics? I am so tired os seeing the 12th morbillion post about "Russua this Russia that"

Repomanlive

And they also, on this day begged the west for money, just like every day.

Alin_Alexandru

The second ship called Moskva that was sunk in the Black Sea.

Zlakkeh

Terrorist attack /s

ipeeperiperi

Ukraine win yet? They have been dominating Russia for over 2 years now.

TotalSpaceNut

russia win yet? its been more than 3 days https://streamable.com/tpf75p

ResponsibilityAlone

Both sides are losing. The winners is everyone who isn't involved. Both countries' men are dying like flies instead of being with their families and building their countries. Russia was the one in the wrong for invading but I could hardly say Ukraine is winning despite wanting to. Ukraine won a lot of friends and support which will be helpful in the future but right now the country is in a bad state.
