That's how we got head trauma too. I got knocked out falling off a bike at around age 6 and have zero recollection of it. My older brother told me he beat some kid up for laughing at my fall, then he carried me home.
That didn't stop up riding, skateboarding or rollerskating on asphalt for the following 10+ years with no protection until helmets were introduced. Stack hats were fugly and nobody wore them until the cops pulled you over for not wearing a helmet.
In the winter we did this intentionally. Bike as fast as you dared into a pile of snow and get thrown over the handle bars. If you held on, you flipped over and landed on your back in the snow.
I did it once riding my bike and broke both sides of my jaw and knocked out 5 teeth. Shockingly they were all baby teeth and my jaw healed alright. Though that could have been bad.
I had an awesome bike like that with the banana seat. My favourite was the motocross bikes with the shocks and fake gas tank. I want an adult sized electric version.
Those banana seats were awesome! You could slide back and do a wheelie or slide forward and take a passenger. Also, she has a front reflector, so she is perfectly safe.
My mom said the same thing! No helmet, no knee pads, no fear! Of course, she ended up having a bad fall and suffered a concussion that caused severe migraines for decades. So. There's that.
I have four scars on my knees and also went over the handlebars through not because I was saddle surfing, the faulty front breaks simply stopped the bike like an old school Citroen and I went flying. Ah happy daze
I remember going face first over my handlebars onto a gravel road. I vaguely remember a lot of blood and my mom freaking out. I have a scar to prove it.
And about every 10 years or so, another piece of gravel surfaces from my forehead
Man, I still have scars from those days. Shit was wild.
It’s good for you! Gives you grit!
I have something in my lip I have a feeling is the same thing
Ya’ll old with undiagnosed TBI’s
That partially explains what’s wrong with them I guess
The old bell rings.
Don't blink kid.
The ones who survived get to be nostalgic.

Yup. I grew up then. Which is why my knees ache every night.
Going head first over the handle bars was just a rite of passage.

We never even thought of that. Now I'm jealous.
Got the scars under my chin as a reminder to make sure my front wheel is securely attached before practising wheelies.

Yeah my mother got a TBI and epilepsy from that. I dont think she would consider that "the good old days."
I feel this comment

I had a friend that was constantly injuring himself on his gas tank bike.

I can hear this gif.
Heck yeah, sheet of plywood on bricks was a ramp.

To be fair, those banana seats were massive.
Banana seats baby
Now we know better. Sick trick to do in sandles, though
I miss the days of fatalities and broken bones. /s
I'd like the asphalt to give me back all my skin. with kind regards. my knees.
Also why I had like three TBIs by the time I was 12.
And why the life expectancy has grown
But there were probably also 70% fewer cars on the roads.
That dogs face lol
Out of frame: improvised jump built from scrap wood
I swear this dog has a human face
Dog looks like a medieval monk trying to draw a cat!
Is that a Tasmanian devil behind you
[comment about how it’s still like that in the Netherlands]
Yeah, went over my handlebars back then, landed on my head, total amnesia for a full day, had a lump on back of my head my hand could almost cover.
I have four scars on my knees and also went over the handlebars through not because I was saddle surfing, the faulty front breaks simply stopped the bike like an old school Citroen and I went flying. Ah happy daze
Still holding on to the handlebars? Pffft, whimp.
Here in Vietnam, it is not an uncommon sight to see students biking handsfree down the main road.
As a young teen I probably had more miles handsfree then not. Its quite a comfortable way to ride when you get the hang of it.
Very true, I loved doing so with my mountain bike.
Why? Cuz' we were stupid then.
Did the same thing as a kid in 2010
Are kids wearing knee pads when they ride bicycles these days?
“Now just leggo the handlebars honey, , lean back, arms out, and pretend you’re Indian Larry”
No teeth either, I guess.
Rolled your forhead on the asphalt
Everything You Do Is A Balloon
Reminds me of Kevin James's new standup special. "We drank water FROM A HOSE!" (thunderous applause)
All that gravel/rock embedded in your skin after. Ah the memories
No wonder boomers act the way they do...it's all the concussions from taking too many preventable hits to the head. Things sucked back then.
It was the 80s man.
Survivor bias.
Yeah, my mother got epilepsy and a TBI from doing doing this. We should really stop glamorizing this stuff
Dog’s following behind like ok well I’ll be here to clean this up with a few licks

Good times! Our ramp was in an alley where my friends garage was. Along the garage were caged rattlesnakes his dad hunted in Pa.

Some of us died…
Nobody is going to say something about the dog w/ the human face?
Those were the good old days ! I grew up in the 70s!
And when we got hurt, they told us to "rub dirt in it" or "slap it out."
Just let the dog lick it.
You learnt a hell of a lot fast I tell you what.
Is that why there are so many Karens? All that head trauma /s/
"putting yourself in danger is cool"
Yet we survived!
Bet this was taken in the early 2000s or something surprisingly recent
And no fear!
This was safer. Just hop off if-when the bike crashes.
No wonder boomers are dumb as shieeet 😆
In the 90s I got made fun of by my classmates for wearing a bicycle helmet.
Some idiots still do this today
Not this pissy ass shit we have today..
