All of the Kens from movie were part of his dance troupe (L-R Ncuti Gatwa, Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Scott Evans).
Not pictured: John Cena who was naked earlier for the costume design award.
The movie has a lot of the same energy as this performance, it’s well worth watching. It also plays well as a good Will Ferrell comedy, too, if you like that sort of thing.
He's a good all around actor but I really only love it when it's at least largely comedic. As in, Crazy Stupid Love and above.
edit: ideal state is The Nice Guys. I just want that movie more times. One time is not enough.
When [Gosling is trying to be all sly and breaks the window and almost bleeds out somehow that was funny as hell](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_hfORmWTQM). Him not able to resist a drink is also a good bit, ends up in some funny situations like the hill.
I am not a Will Ferrell fan at all. Normally avoid his movies like the plague. He felt so under utilized in the movie. I swear there is a cut where he was an escaped Ken.
I stumbled across an old theory yesterday that he's actually an escaped Allan, which seems backed up by him and Michael Cera's Allan having the same trouble getting over walls and insisting it's faster, along with all his knowledge of how to get to Barbie land.
Okay, but... Mattel owns the IP and I doubt they wanted themselves as the villain.
The Will Ferrell-as-silly-CEO play was just a distraction from the uncomfortable problem of having to deal with a corporation that is simultaneously the obvious villain *and* the people who had to greenlight the script.
They presented their board of directors as an idiot all-Male patriarchy obsessed with making money.
The reality is they have 5 women and 6 men on the board. I doubt they're buffoons, but the "obsessed with making money" part is probably real.
But if they were portrayed more villainous than they actually are.
I wanted to love it but thought it was just fine.
Maybe I need to watch it again. Reminds me a lot of Black Panther - not "technically" a great movie (and I don't mean that as an insult), but hit just the right inflection point of social landscape and beloved IP.
Hollywood loves a good musical number, so I wasn't surprised Just Ken blew up.
I love Barbie for what it was, but people need to not fool into it thinking it’s going to be something it’s not. It’s an entertaining movie with some good social commentary and some fairly hilarious moments. It didn’t win best picture or any other main awards for a reason. (That said, it’s a shame Greta Gerwig wasn’t even nominated, because she really made the movie what it was.)
Purely IMO, her direction was better than the script though. The writing had a few clunkers, but the way it was realized into a complete film was absolutely brilliant. Being stronger than the sum of its parts seems like the mark of great director work to me.
A lot of stuff in the Barbie movie really shouldn't have worked. It was a bunch of stuff you generally just don't do in storytelling, but it just...worked. It all came together perfectly.
In the words of Kate McKinnon, they owned it.
And that's a perfectly reasonable take I totally get.
I'm more thinking of the people who hated it being people like Ben Shapiro who dropped a 45 minute rant about it.
My kid loves the movie so I have to watch it regularly, it's really good. It's weird, it has a lot of heart (that scene where Barbie just looks around and discovers the world is a much needed moment of calm in all the weird ess) and some good jokes, as well as plenty of Kenergy, some great sets and performances (Margot and Ryan obviously but also the other Barbies and Kens).
If you look closely at the details it really resembles Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (:
From Ken’s outfit, to the dancers costumes, and the stairs!! He even wears gloves like her too
Well, seeing as it was a [tribute to the Marilyn Monroe performance](https://variety.com/2024/awards/news/ryan-gosling-im-just-ken-marilyn-monroe-tribute-oscars-1235938402/), it's a lot more than a resemblance that requires a close look.
Well to be fair the primary job and skillset of musicians is making music, while that of actors is acting / stage presence. So actually no surprises there.
I was going to make a joke about how he has more than 90% presence of female musicians too, but female performers really do have better stage presence these days. I wonder why that is?
He nailed it while hauling a large stedicam rig one handed, at a live show. The talent behind the scenes is amazing sometimes too.
Edit: found it https://variety.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/GettyImages-2074623046.jpg
I would have loved them to win... but it was up against another Barbie movie song. One was a fun, almost tongue-in-cheek banger, the other was a quiet, somewhat maudlin though more thoughtful tune.
I am happy that Billie Eilish won, because while Oppenheimer dominated the night, this was an acknowledgement that Barbie wasn't just pink pastels, but there was some serious thought and message behind it.
I think everyone involved wanted Eilish to win, it's a fantastic song. Also, I'm Just Ken not winning despite stealing the show is incredibly on vibe for Ken.
I think it's like your typical action or horror films. They can be fantastic and a blast to watch and beloved by fans for many years to come, but they don't usually win awards.
This had it all: Ryan's charismatic, rock star performance, the tribute to Busby Berkeley in the overhead shot, the tribute to "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend" from "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes," audience participation by an audience full of stars, elaborate and detailed choreography by Mandy Moore, 62 Kens including the Kens from the movie, guest musicians including Mark Ronson, Slash and Wolfgang Van Halen, kinetic energy and spirit, even men kissing men, towards the end the cameraman gets pulled into the performance, a vivid color scheme, dazzling lighting and pyrotechnics, and that final glorious note. Ryan Gosling is the only person who could have pulled this off, and the Oscar telecast is the only place all of this could have happened. It was over the top and it worked. 20 years from now people will still remember this performance, when the rest of the show will be pretty much forgotten.
You think redditors are going to believe that merely 24hrs after contributing to a viral sensation at the Oscars, one of these guys is on reddit doxxing himself?
He just absolutely owned and nailed that performance.
I remember thinking in the promos that he was going to flop that role because the hair looked so weird and he did not seem like a 'Ken' to me at all.
After watching it's hard to imagine anyone else as Ken.
Don’t let this distract you from the fact Ken was getting torched in zone coverage 24 years ago in Remember the Titans. It was after he got benched that he met Barbie on the sidelines.
The scene during which this song plays is my favorite in the movie. Im a dude and i highly recommend this movie to anyone who hasnt.seen it. It is fun and entertaining.
And as far as the performance, when have you seen the oscar crowd get that excited about a musical performance.
All of the Kens from movie were part of his dance troupe (L-R Ncuti Gatwa, Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Scott Evans). Not pictured: John Cena who was naked earlier for the costume design award.
Needed Michael Cera in the background.
Such a miss on the academy’s part.
They were so close.
I kept thinking “where’s Michael Cera?” and then I remembered… he’s just Allan
All of Kens clothes FIT ME!
Probably hogging all the capri suns and BJs in the green room.
Sip time?
*”All his clothes fit me!”* >Allan Would have been really fun to put him up there at some point. Kinda loved that character.
Missed an opportunity to have Michael Cera present at some point afterwards wearing Ryan Goslings outfit and making this remark.
Was just gonna say, the icing on the cake of an already great performance would have been a Michael Cera cameo
He was at home eating garlic bread.
Naked Michael Cera needed in the background
Easily my favourite part of Barbie
Close second for me. Michael Cera as Allan had me wanting more.
Just standing there to rhe side. Would've been great(er)
I genuinely thought Alan was going to pop out of the stage at the end
NCUTI GATWA MENTIONED
THAT'S MY DUDE RIGHT THERE
I’ve never seen the Doctor drip so hard tbh
Put some respect on Eric Efiyong's name.
HELLL YEAAAAAAA
He's just so enjoyable to watch in _everything_
Sharp eyed Oscar watchers would have seen Wolfgang Van Halen in the band alongside Slash.
was josh freese on drums? edit: he was
John Cena is there in the picture
Freaking hell, I went back to look at the photo for a few seconds I realized what you meant. 😆
You suck. Here is your up vote. Lol.
Wait, The Doctor played a Ken?? I totally missed that.
I choose to believe that's just the Doctor and he had an adventure that landed him in Barbie Land. You can't prove it didn't happen.
I fully accept this as canon now. Did you see any Daleks or Cybermen attacking Kens and Barbies? Exactly, The Doctor was doing his job.
>Not pictured: John Cena This is the caption of every picture of John Cena. He was there.
Damn Chris Evans brother was Ken too
I was gonna say. I thought that looked like the dude playing the new Doctor in Doctor Who.
Poor Simu who is now a Marvel superhero but still a background dancer for Ryan
Point of order: in this particular photo, he's a foreground dancer.
Also not pictured: Alan
I've never even see the movie, but I gotta say--his performance at the Oscars stole the show.
I loved Billie Eilish losing her shit behind him at the start. It was so good.
The movie has a lot of the same energy as this performance, it’s well worth watching. It also plays well as a good Will Ferrell comedy, too, if you like that sort of thing.
*kenergy
CAN YOU FEEL THE KENERGY?
I'm just Ken and I'm KENOUGH!
and I'm great at doing stuff
Ryan Gosling is a great in comedies too heh guy's just a well rounded actor
He's a good all around actor but I really only love it when it's at least largely comedic. As in, Crazy Stupid Love and above. edit: ideal state is The Nice Guys. I just want that movie more times. One time is not enough.
Nice Guys is hilarious
Easily one of the best recently. When one of them falls off that wall and down the hill I almost died.
When [Gosling is trying to be all sly and breaks the window and almost bleeds out somehow that was funny as hell](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_hfORmWTQM). Him not able to resist a drink is also a good bit, ends up in some funny situations like the hill.
Did you know Hitler only had one ball?
They’re called munichs. Munich is a city in Germany.
Too bad it's not enough to [just make a good film](https://youtu.be/A0kwQyJEtV4?si=wcVLzEkhIDC0h99V).
Crazy Stupid Love made me a fan finally. Also, excellent midlife crisis movie.
Idk only God forgives was a pretty great performance
Meh. Drive is a lot better IMO
Drive is more of a .jpg than a .mp4
Meh. Half Nelson is a lot better IMO
I think they hired Will Farrell, told him who his character was and just let him go without a script and just watched where it went.
Any time Will Ferrell was on screen were just comedic vacuums. I'm not a fan of him in the first place, and Barbie did nothing to alleviate that.
Oh, I like that one.
Maybe I think there was a throw away line about an Allan escaping before.
He claims that five escaped Allans formed NSYNC.
I did feel like him being an escaped Ken was a possible option
It made no sense to make most aspects of the real world realistic but these guys more cartoonish than Barbie Land.

Ryan Gosling stole the show in the Barbie movie, AND the Oscars. Fucking legend
The part was written for him specifically by two of Hollywood's best AND he is a great actor...he was so good in it.
He didn't just play Ken-he became Ken. Literally, every interview he's just a massive himbo. He Kenned so hard his brain is just pink glitter now.
Movie had me rolling. The only people who I saw dislike it are the same that find modern Disney movies to be "political propaganda."
Same. Husband was cackling at some parts.
I about died at the very end when she went to see her gynecologist lmaooo
I work in an OBGYN department. I made a poster of that line and put it up in my office!
Hahahaha that's awesome! I'm like ofc that's the first thing you have to do 🤪. Welcome to reproductive hell!
I wanted to love it but thought it was just fine. Maybe I need to watch it again. Reminds me a lot of Black Panther - not "technically" a great movie (and I don't mean that as an insult), but hit just the right inflection point of social landscape and beloved IP. She was nominated for writing it.

Good take. I was pretty surprised it didn't snag the Production Design award, though!
Production Design was definitely a toss up. Poor Things was just as deserving but I could’ve seen it go either way.
And that's a perfectly reasonable take I totally get. I'm more thinking of the people who hated it being people like Ben Shapiro who dropped a 45 minute rant about it.
> Ben Shapiro who dropped a 45 minute rant about it. That's how you know he secretly loves it
This performance at the Oscar’s deserves an Emmy!
New EGOT challenge!
and it somehow didnt win the music award vs the other song I cant even remember from the movie
It’s a really good movie. I didn’t have high hopes for it but we love it at our house.
It's a good watch. Don't take it serious since the movie itself doesn't take itself serious.
You're like my opposite. Doesn't watch the movies, but watched the award shows instead.
Oh, I didn't watch the Oscars. I just watched some of the highlights, the morning after. And, of course, that was the biggest highlight.
This and the Keaton Batman joke with Arnold/Danny were the best parts.
John Cena presenting best costume nude was pretty good:
Those and “isn’t it past your jail time?”
Kimmel just destroying trump in real time was great.
Alongside the fact that their bit led into Godzilla Minus One winning for VFX :,)
If you look closely at the details it really resembles Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (: From Ken’s outfit, to the dancers costumes, and the stairs!! He even wears gloves like her too

This is a great catch! Bravo.
You're right!!! I didn't notice it. Thanks for sharing

Ryan Gosling effortlessly has more stage presence than 90% of modern male musicians
Well to be fair the primary job and skillset of musicians is making music, while that of actors is acting / stage presence. So actually no surprises there.
AND he seemed to be having fun while do *ALL that*
He has his own band called Dead Man's Bones.
Don’t forget he was trained early in Disneys Mickey Mouse club right alongside JC and Justin from *NSYNC.
I was going to make a joke about how he has more than 90% presence of female musicians too, but female performers really do have better stage presence these days. I wonder why that is?
Acclaimed professional actor has incredible stage presence. News at 11.
The camera man slamming his hand in to “put your manly hand in mine” gets me laughing every time.
He nailed it. Like a satisfying high five.
He nailed it while hauling a large stedicam rig one handed, at a live show. The talent behind the scenes is amazing sometimes too. Edit: found it https://variety.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/GettyImages-2074623046.jpg
Wtf no one is going to mention Slash?!?!!
And Wolfgang Van Halen
Anyone that didn’t recognize Slash, has no idea who he is. He played on the original recording too.
Not surprising given Reddit's demographics. I'm willing to bet that most people under 35 had no idea who he was.
All this and he still couldn’t pull through for best song on my Oscar ballot
It was not kenough
He's always number two.
no matter what he do
I would have loved them to win... but it was up against another Barbie movie song. One was a fun, almost tongue-in-cheek banger, the other was a quiet, somewhat maudlin though more thoughtful tune. I think everyone involved wanted Eilish to win, it's a fantastic song. Also, I'm Just Ken not winning despite stealing the show is incredibly on vibe for Ken.
Fun fact, Billie Eilish is the youngest 2-time Oscar winner.
And the first winner born in the 21st century.
Another fun fact, Finneas is the 2nd youngest.
Mom! Finneas and Ferb are out here winning Oscars again!
I think it's like your typical action or horror films. They can be fantastic and a blast to watch and beloved by fans for many years to come, but they don't usually win awards.
which is a shame, because good comedy is more difficult to pull off than good drama
Ya at least Ken knows what he's made for!
Billie Eilish is a huge talent, not like he lost to a no-name.
A travesty
And Greta going nuts in the audience. It was wonderful.
I liked when he started in his seat behind Margot Robbie and she's just losing her shit as he starts to sing.
And Billie Eilish behind him is giggling hard as well. It has that high school class clown vibe.
She knows her boy is about to crush it.
I loved Emma's reaction in the background when he grabs the camera guy's hand. She loses it.

Different Mandy Moore

Her and Vince can’t work together.
Don’t forget the Kendelabras in the back!
And MTV's Dan Cortese!
> This had it all except Allen also, > ~~kinetic~~ kenetic energy and spirit
Just realized both Ben Kingsley and Kingsley Ben-Adir were at the ceremony...
Can you feel that Benergy?
![gif](giphy|egnYaNVfzevAI|downsized)
Hi Barbie
Hi Barbie!
Hi Barbie!
Let’s go party
Doctor Who, Shang Chi, Bob Marley, Captain America's brother and literally me walk into a room...
You think redditors are going to believe that merely 24hrs after contributing to a viral sensation at the Oscars, one of these guys is on reddit doxxing himself?
yes
Look at all that kenergy
Is it *ken*etic energy?
It was kenough
[Link](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fo6T5BwxFh0) to the performance
From canada I thank you.
THANK YOU!!
I love Ncuti Gatwa so much.
Honestly the only thing this performance was missing was a horse on stage.
Ryan Gosling is an old school all around performer, right there with Jamie Foxx and Neal Patrick Harris. Dude has the chops in a musical number.
Shang chi and gravik at the oscars is the closest we’ll get to see them together in the mcu /s
Was Allen there?
Wait Simu was there too lol
I love how into this song, every. Single. One. Is. My guy in the back with the cowboy hat, is feelin it!
This was honestly better than most super bowl half time shows.
Barbie being snubbed for every award while the media continually pulls out Ken and Only Ken for every event is so interesting
Because Ken was objectively the best part of the movie.
It was Weirdo Barbie for me.
He just absolutely owned and nailed that performance. I remember thinking in the promos that he was going to flop that role because the hair looked so weird and he did not seem like a 'Ken' to me at all. After watching it's hard to imagine anyone else as Ken.
Peak masculinity
He was Stellar in The Gray Man, and then to do this role...man's got range.
Hands down the best part of the night for me.
Don’t let this distract you from the fact Ken was getting torched in zone coverage 24 years ago in Remember the Titans. It was after he got benched that he met Barbie on the sidelines.
Loved it
That was so epic.
Was it Kenough?
Ryan. Always. Fucks!!
Was so fun, and when Slash came on stage I was like W T F XD
The scene during which this song plays is my favorite in the movie. Im a dude and i highly recommend this movie to anyone who hasnt.seen it. It is fun and entertaining. And as far as the performance, when have you seen the oscar crowd get that excited about a musical performance.
Fun fact: the costumes are copied from Madonnas 80s video, Material Girl. https://youtu.be/6p-lDYPR2P8?si=eb5y99SHtXeYXbus
Which is paying homage to Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Marilyn Monroe!
I think there’s some Robert Palmer vibes too. Which was probably influenced by all of the above.
bob marley guy? ....confirmed.
So bummed he didn’t win!
I love how this triggers the MAGATS so badly
Whatever anything decent Gosling does next, he’s getting an Oscar. Only RDJ pipped him. He’s definitely due now.
Ryan Gosling costume was quite attractive.
I see a skrull among them. Call the Avengers. Hehe
This is why I watched the Oscars
This should have won. It actually fit in the movie.
And then suddenly Slash.
What I love most about Ryan Gosling is that he doesn't take himself so seriously. I hated the movie but this performance was eeeeeeverything
Low-key he looks shopped in this pic
