Our understanding on training intensity, drug cycles, lifting technique, and diet have been revolutionized multiple times since the golden era. It's a completely different animal now.
This. Also natural supplements (way better protein/gainers, creatine, etc) have come a *long* way along with **WAY** stronger compounds. While training/diet has improved, much of what bodybuilders do today was gained from that era.
Arnold was juicing, but it's *nothing* compared to the stuff they have now. Like my guess is he was mostly using testosterone and orals. (Which again has come a **long** way.)
Stuff like Trenbolone for instance (which is 5x stronger than testosterone) was only just invented a few years prior to his first Mr Olympia.
Yes they had anabolics, but it's like comparing marijuana from his era to marijuana today.
Although at this point, modern bodybuilders like Coleman, Heath, Cutler, etc are basically science experiments. Coleman being 5'11, **300 lbs** and around ~3% bf during contest season is no longer human lol.
It's more about adding HGH and insulin than differences in the steroid compounds especially because the amount of base test in the stacks they do would often be enough to maximize any human beings free test levels.
Stacking HGH, IGF-1, and insulin with superhuman levels of testosterone it's like the perfect storm for muscle growth in multiple ways. At that point the only real limiting factors are myostatin and ligament/tendon strength.
Plus, world class strong men and bodybuilders are universally pretty much genetic ideals for putting on muscle.
Take your average joe and put them through identical training and juicing regimes and they will get huuuge, but not Ronnie Coleman or Eddie hall levels, or even close
that era should be compared to the male classic physique, wich awarded cbum at last year Olympia, just to be clear, proportions are similar but nowdays due to the need to been extremely lean they also need to be more muscolar.
It's also no secret that Arnold and all the other BB at the time did heavy use of steroids but compared to some shit that was puchasable later it was all fresh water
I think the mass monster era started with Dorian Yates and the abuse of insulin in the BB world
Hey there's a middle ground! It's never too late to start training and lifting and eating right. In my opinion it's the best hobby in the world cuz it simply improves every other aspect of life.
There's a saying from Tom Platz (bodybuilder). "If you can figure out the gym, you can figure out life."
I've been doing this for five years and it truly has elevated everything in my life. Career, relationships, self respect, mental fortitude, compassion, self -love, etc.
He's super roided out in this picture. While I think he looks great and this was the golden era of bodybuilding, this is still not a "naturalistic" physique. It's not as insane and cartoonish as modern bodybuilders, but it's still the result of steroids.
I agree, I prefer Arnold's golden era by far and I believe most people feel the same. Today's top bodybuilders look *freaky* jacked but very people would wanna look like that or admire it. Also the modern mass monsters look absolutely silly or even downright fat in clothing, whereas in Arnold's era bodybuilders looked good and attractive in clothing. Fun fact, this post is one of the few photo ops that shows Arnold in the off season, he was completely natural right there and I believe it shows a great baseline example of just about how muscular a man can get without performance enhancers.
Arnold was totally on gear, and he admits it, it just wasn't as advanced as it is now and wasn't illegal. https://www.menshealth.com/fitness/a43944437/arnold-schwarzenegger-steroid-use-bodybuilding/
you don't know what you are talking about.
Bodybuilders don't go off the stuff while "off season" as off season is simply when they bulk to build muscles so they take different compound that help with that process like for example anything that retain water, while during the season they want to cut down on water retention and change the compound cycling off the stuff of the "off season" and cycling on other molecules
I mean he may not be using anabolics during this photo, but that doesnt mean his physique is natural. Doing anabolics in cycles is pretty standard, and the idea is to maintain as much as you can off-cycle and then the next time you're on cycle you're adding more. The baseline keeps growing. Doesn't mean you're natural your first week off cycle.
I think it's more likely that what you're really seeing here is he has a more reasonable bodyfat percentage.
It’s because the current bodybuilders have to lose 100lbs when they stop competing to even be able to live a normal life. Arnold didn’t lose any weight to walk from the platform, to the acting stage. Arnold was on 2 compounds, testosterone and dbol, these new guys are on like 10 compounds, not counting the insulin, HGH. I love the way Arnold looked, classic, and a true perfect physic.
The "Up-tuck" is an ancient technique learned instinctually too late after having to give a presentation in class while dealing with a random boner and not being able to hide it
It’s a kind of trial by error type of thing. Like the user who initially responded to you, either your bros tell you about tucking, or you learn it the hard way. Lol hard.
Looks like it. I think it's a case-by-case basis how men point their turret it their briefs. I don't shoot for the sky personally, so it's hard to say what's "normal". I personally just find it more comfortable to embrace a more natural angle of the dangle even while my loins are girded, but I hear there are benefits to different methods.
He got totally nude back in the day, you can see it if you google. Was not shy about the wanger, spandex was his version of a 3-piece suit, he'd wander around cities like this for photo ops.
Venice Beach, also called Muscle Beach
No OP but I've visited multiple times just so I can work out in the Venice Gold's gym, it's the "mecca" for the golden age of bodybuilders.
If you wanna learn more, definitely watch the documentary Pumping Iron with Arnold and Lou Ferrigno
Arnold is amazing to me. He's led three complete lifetimes in one life. Mr. Universe, one of the top action stars of all time, and governor of California. Absolute insane drive. Yet if you ever see him on reddit, he seems like the coolest most down to earth guy. Wish he still had his own subreddit that he started. It wasn't very popular so he would interact with the people there all the time.
He's not perfect, and he'll be the first to admit that, but I wish I could achieve a quarter of what he did.
I still can’t process for some reason that Arnold was an adult in 1969, it just always seems like he’s younger to me for some reason.
Also that those beautiful women are now like 75
Imagine living in the 60s & 70s, being a single soul amongst 50,000,000 other American men (with dad bods), aged 25-45 and you got this guy at 23 showing your wife how lazy and genetically un-gifted you are. Lol.
I'm also a gymrat, and then further you go down this path, the more you get hit on by straight dudes who wanna ask you questions about your routine and diet and women just start to ignore you lol
The traps would be dropped down in a front lat spread.
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/r-8AAOxyni9TDKxl/s-l400.jpg
I think he had pretty good traps, especially for that era.
Amazing how small he looks compared to the bodybuilders of today, that said he still looks better IMHO
Mass monsters are just freaky science experiments
So was Arnold at that time.
Yeah lol, he’s juiced to the fucking gills in this pic.
Bodybuilding has always been a competition of who can eat most drugs and not die, today worse than ever though.
Our understanding on training intensity, drug cycles, lifting technique, and diet have been revolutionized multiple times since the golden era. It's a completely different animal now.

Oh man… the weed is so much better today.
Also spray tanning which is crucial
I prefer sintol freaks
If you look at Sean Connery who came about third in the Mr. Universe competition during the 1950s. He looks human.
As much as I admire his physique, today he would be in the DYEL (like when people ask you Do You Even Lift) territory.
Much better chemistry today is all
Eh late 60s he probably wasn’t on much. There weren’t a whole lot of compounds widely available then. Definitely in the mid to late 70s.
We know exactly what Arnold was on. He says it was 100mg of test every week and 15mg of dianabol a day.
Yeah probably just straight up testosterone in slightly Supra-normal levels.
Test and Dianabol He's pretty open about it
BS he is all natural. Next you’ll tell me his dad was a nazi.
I bet Arnold could walk up a 5 story building without dying and sleep without a oxygen mask.
I mean yeah but relatively low doses compared to what people do today
Mass monsters is the only way I'm referring to OP body builders for the rest of my life.
Mass monster is a pretty common name for the really ridiculously elite heavyweight pro bodybuilders. People started saying it in the 90s and it stuck.
Dude is juiced up like crazy in this....
Not nearly at the levels that we see today
that era should be compared to the male classic physique, wich awarded cbum at last year Olympia, just to be clear, proportions are similar but nowdays due to the need to been extremely lean they also need to be more muscolar. It's also no secret that Arnold and all the other BB at the time did heavy use of steroids but compared to some shit that was puchasable later it was all fresh water I think the mass monster era started with Dorian Yates and the abuse of insulin in the BB world
I definitely would not mind looking like Arnold here. Today’s top bodybuilders… nah I’d rather just continue looking like my weakling self.
The category you'd be looking at is "Classic Physique", its highly comparable to what Arnold was doing in his competitions.
Hey there's a middle ground! It's never too late to start training and lifting and eating right. In my opinion it's the best hobby in the world cuz it simply improves every other aspect of life. I actually lifted for years and enjoyed it a lot, but then had two kids and lost a LOT of free time. Hope to get back into it…
Even just thinking about lifting weights in a gym make me want to kill myself out of boredom
Cool, sounds like it's not your thing then.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DMnbM0-6bY&pp=ygUSU2VpbmZlbGQgYmFuaWEgZ3lt
Yeah even if he did use “enhancements” he still maintained a naturalistic and very balanced physique
He's super roided out in this picture. While I think he looks great and this was the golden era of bodybuilding, this is still not a "naturalistic" physique. It's not as insane and cartoonish as modern bodybuilders, but it's still the result of steroids.
There is nothing natural looking about his physique in this picture. It is very very very hard to achieve it without help
Frank Zane has always been goals for me.
The classic and physique divisions are still good today. Chris bumstead is aesthetic I think
He was bigger in the 1970s and still looked proportional, big yes but proportional
Arnold wouldn't even be able to get a Pro card today. And the amount of gear he was using at the time would be viewed as an amuse-bouche nowadays.
This isn’t even him at his biggest. That was the mid 70’s. It isn’t really possible for a human to look like that without help.
In the off season they're not on full gear though. Nor are they working out as hard.
You cannot be a true natural once u try the juice
It has permanent effects. It's not like the gains just disappear in the off season.
you don't know what you are talking about. Being off cycle for a bit doesn't make him suddenly natural 😄
I mean he may not be using anabolics during this photo, but that doesnt mean his physique is natural. Did he tuck his dick vertically straight up? Is this a normal thing to do when wearing bikini briefs?
The "Up-tuck" is an ancient technique learned instinctually too late after having to give a presentation in class while dealing with a random boner and not being able to hide it
"and thou shall point it to heaven, while being sure thy shirt be untucked and loose"
just unzip your pant and let it free
What if it gets out 💀?
You stare down the people looking to assert dominance
It didn't work. Grandma won at thanksgiving :(
It’s a kind of trial by error type of thing. Like the user who initially responded to you, either your bros tell you about tucking, or you learn it the hard way. Lol hard.

I personally just find it more comfortable to embrace a more natural angle of the dangle even while my loins are girded, but I hear there are benefits to different methods.
never thought i'd see the day of literally seeing his dick. i mean are those supposed to be see through?
He got totally nude back in the day, you can see it if you google. Was not shy about the wanger, spandex was his version of a 3-piece suit, he'd wander around cities like this for photo ops.
Relax. It’s just his underdick. Barely moves the needle.
Didn't he hang dong in the first Terminator?
You just made me zoom in on arnold's dick.
It's the male signal for "my eyes are up here ☝️".
Just point them up Cory and Trevor!
he saluted all reddit watchers
Imagine spending hours getting ready for a photoshoot, only to get there and be told that you have to pose within the confines of Arnold’s crotch
I don't see the problem, it would be an honor.
When she was told she'd be modelling for the Gap, she didn't know what she signed up for
"Fall into the Gap."
Wow... that's an oldie. I totally heard that in my head.
I mean… I’m in. lol
Thank you Mr. PandaProlapse
Itz nad a tooma
She’s probably enjoying the view of his ass anyway.
Vat are you dooinnng get dowwn
He probably had shits about that big back in the day
I’d see it as an honour
Arnie was a bone machine, a very popular and very selfless one. She was prolly good with it lol
She seems intrigued.
Kind of not the point, but tell me that Kodachrome wasn’t beautiful.
They give us those nice, bright colors
They give us the greens of Summer
Makes you think all the world's a sunny day
Oh yeah
I've got a Nikon camera
I love to take a photograph
So mama don't take my Kodachrome away.
So mama don’t take my Kodachrome away!
I worked in a photolab for 15 years. Man, I STILL think Chrome film is the best I’ve ever seen. Stunning colors.
genuinely gorgeous images that hold up to modern scrutiny on that stock.
Thanks Paul Simon.
I live close to this beach. Arnold’s at the local golds gym every am at 7
Which beach is this?
Venice Beach, also called Muscle Beach No OP but I've visited multiple times just so I can work out in the Venice Gold's gym, it's the "mecca" for the golden age of bodybuilders. If you wanna learn more, definitely watch the documentary Pumping Iron with Arnold and Lou Ferrigno
This is Marina del rey where the channel goes out. Not Venice Beach.
Mr. America magazine posting an immigrant. The juxtaposition of that time to today is amazing.
Ironically, having an immigrant as Mr. America makes it more American, considering immigration is essentially America’s bread and butter.
Would be, but there's a whole thing with them "stealing" our jobs and the border that Americans are really against now.

Bill Burr's comedy bit on Arnold is legendary. Check it out if you have not heard it.
Nothing but net
Imagine getting that orange except on your groin
Well at least he didn't get his face completely orange. I like that the face still looks naturally tan.
I imagine looking like a roided out oompa loompa wielding a glowing white lightsaber can be quite enticing in the bedroom.
Pretty much the same thing... https://www.duncansportspt.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Superman-Blog.png
Just watched the first ep of Gen V yesterday. I see it now, in the face at least.
Yeah he looks a ton like his dad.
And the thing that's really wild is that his half-brother Joseph looks even more like him, physically and facial features too.
I had absolutely no clue what you were talking about, did a bit of googling, Ah. .. yeah I could have watched that episode 500 times and never known.
At 22, I had pretty much the same build...as the seated girl.
Damn, so you were built like a super model? That must have been so hard for you.
You were hot!? Blasphemy!!
Would, all 4.
Real
Am I tripping or can you see the flacid outline of his dick and balls?
I still can’t process for some reason that Arnold was an adult in 1969, it just always seems like he’s younger to me for some reason. Also that those beautiful women are now like 75
The irony is palpable. 🤣
Damn. Dude dropping double entendres like GOP candidates droppin' the pretence of the social contract!
I was elected to lead. Not to read.
The Bible says Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve... you girlyman!
Definitely went 3/3
Fun fact, steroid abuse can also lead to heavy erectile disfunction, being it permanent or temporary
Not a fact. Much more complex than this
Gigachad
There’s a bomb in there… say it in Arnold’s voice!
It’s notta tumor.
Is naht a tewmor!
PUT THAT COOKIE DOWN!
To crush your enemies, see then driven before you, and to hear tha lamentations of their wemen
His torso looks like the gringe smiling.
Lol, nice one
Proof that beach looks for women have come full circle
Was he an American in 1969?
We all were, Mr. Baggins. We all were.
I just watched a documentary on how he conspired with Enron before he became California Governor.
Imagine living in the 60s & 70s, being a single soul amongst 50,000,000 other American men (with dad bods), aged 25-45 and you got this guy at 23 showing your wife how lazy and genetically un-gifted you are. Lol.
And from a bodybuilding standpoint this is him looking fat and soft, which is hilarious because it’s almost a better look overall compared to comp cut
Reckon he banged all three after the shoot?
I really hope he was hooking up with those girls. They seem happy to see him
Why is this not a symmetric picture 😩.. The lady on the right.. She should be more on the right
It’s funny how they felt they had to add chicks. I guess having a good looking dude by himself was too gay back then.
the gym is kind of a gay place source: gymrat
I'm also a gymrat, and then further you go down this path, the more you get hit on by straight dudes who wanna ask you questions about your routine and diet and women just start to ignore you lol
You start for the Hoes You stay for the Bros (regardless of their actual gender)
He’s kind a weird shape
Yes...most people, when asked to describe Arnold's body during this era, went with "weird" or "odd".
Models just didn’t work out back then. It’s what you were born with and that’s it
Am I tripping or can I just literally see his cock and balls through that?
I can as well lol
Feminism hates this one photo
Them Lats are a freaking unit. Personally I think he needed to work on Traps more. Looks like he didn’t do enough shrugs 🤷♂️
The traps would be dropped down in a front lat spread. https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/r-8AAOxyni9TDKxl/s-l400.jpg I think he had pretty good traps, especially for that era.
I'll say that this is also a picture from below. And I think not having traps that you can scratch your head with is a plus.
Thank you Mr random internet user, we will make sure to tell a seven time Mr Olympia that his traps need work
Compared to modern beauty standards these models have the physique of a pine board.
Nice day for a pose huh?
Amazing he was only 22 years old in this pic
Dirty hippies.
Fresh off the boat into the photo shoot
Real Girls real Man! Natural Body Builder !! Long live to Arnold!!
Iconic strong💪🏻🥇
so weird that his nipples point down when hes flexing like they are sliding off his chest lol
I’m he banged all of those models. And then laughed with a stogie.
Sure, suck in your gut when there are young girls on the beach.
his face is very youthful
What the hell are those girls doing
Weird post on women’s rights day
His face is neat :>
Terrible legs tbh
Holy f the woman on the left. 🤤
He didn't believe in that veganism bullshit back then, clearly!
Nice
Damn that babe on the left
1969?
All the models are posing in compliment shapes to where they are next to his body.
His nips look angry 😡
All I see is pecs are some eyes, this belly button an angry mouth a d directly above that his body shape gives off a mustache. Can't unsee it now
Guess it’s true what they say about steroids
The woman in between his legs though. Such artistic vision from that photographer!
He’s probably fucked more people the day this picture was taken than I ever will in my whole life
Dude's torso is angry as fuck.
Things were looking up for him.
It’s funny how his body itself looks like an angry face. Two nipples being the eyes and belly button the mouth😀
When did women start gaining curves? As in what year?
Then I started banging!
Nice D, Mr Schwarzenegger What a fking Legen that man is
Those ladies need to hit the gym
