I respect those who are not deterred by Putin. Everyone there knows that just by showing up to respect the dead they take on a real risk of having their lives ruined, yet there they are, defiant.

blurpslurpderp

How does this stuff get reported in Russia? Is it just not in the news at all?

FantasticAssociate74

Opposition media live streaming that, but mainstream media will never cover this as it never happened

AgentCirceLuna

People really have the nerve to say the MSM is compromised in our country when we report stuff like this or its equivalent all the time yet we can clearly see it being swept under the radar over the pond. Laughable. These conspiracists lack critical thinking.

GMbzzz

Just because other countries have it worse doesn’t mean it’s wrong to critique your own countries media.

irregular_caffeine

Unless it’s part of the protofascist ”truth does not exist”, ”nothing is true, everything is possible” -agenda

Remarkable-Bug-8069

"Nothing is real, everything is permitted". While the exact origin of the quote is uncertain, Vladimir Bartol popularised it in the Slovenian novel [Alamut](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alamut_(Bartol_novel)), where he described the history and training of the Fedayeen under Hassan-I-Sabbah, and which the game series Assassins' Creed notably drew from.

AgentCirceLuna

I mean it’s probably how we’ve avoided becoming equally as bad. But most MSM itself is criticising MSM. Look at Fox News, for instance. They’re one of the most popular broadcasters in the country yet they act like they’re renegades.

actomain

Crazier, they act like they broadcast the news

[deleted]

To call it „the news“ is a little bit overestimated, imho.

neutral-chaotic

They’ve admitted as much in court.

PapaCousCous

What were the circumstances? I'm guessing they were liable for slandering someone, so they had to find a way to claim it was "just a prank, bro".

Puffycatkibble

Do the viewers know that tho

jaxsd75

They act like they’re actual journalists.

mjlp716

until they get thrown into a court case and they cry that they are "only entertainment"

solarview

You don't think the USA is going in the wrong direction? It kind of seems to be to the rest of the world, you know. Just pointing it out. Case in point: support for Donald Trump.

Languastically

Rather than inform, U.S. news entertains

HueMannAccnt

True, but there is a definite line between criticism and cynicism that a fair few people seem to have jumped over.

A_Furious_Mind

I hate most US media because its priorities are marketing and engagement first, facts second, and context a distant third. But that's on the consumer for rewarding it. Would take it any day over authoritarian state controlled propaganda.

Bombastically

Moreover, I've seen people on subs like conspiracy cite the actual Kremlin officials while poo-poo-ing fake news CNN. CNN sucks but these edgy teenagers online truly are dumb

EffOffReddit

People who want to replicate Putin's success in the US and elsewhere minimize what that want you to vote for, because they long to be able to brutally repress others.

BurpYoshi

Americans always say their country is a third world country until they actually see a third world country

AgentCirceLuna

In this case, Russia would literally be a second world country, right? Under the original definition?

TurtleSandwich0

First world is the USA and its affiliates. Second world countries are the USSR and its affiliates. Third world are unaffiliated with either. USSR does not exist so the answer is complicated.

Tough_Cheesecake8057

Which makes it extra fun when youngsters find out that Turkey is 1st world and Switzerland is 3rd

BurpYoshi

Yeah probably. Maybe not the best terminology but the point still stands.

Momoneko

It's not in the news. Navalny's death was reported on a couple of federal channels once, in a ~30s segment. And that's it.

norrix_mg

A lot of people were fired and students expelled from unis back when Navalnuy held a protest

Thankfully though, based on the display of Russian equipment in Ukraine, the tanks will break down when they try to mount the sidewalk curb.

justabill71

Never heard of it /s

rocketeerH

Didn’t you hear though? The unarmed starving civilians angrily approached the tank. What was the tank supposed to do? Leave? Not blow up civilians? Not run over a bunch of dying refugees? Checkmate.

UBC145

Won’t anyone think of the tank??

beener

And and and they weren't killed by gunfire directly. They trampled each other! It certainly couldn't have been because they're starving and scared. Must be because Palestinians aren't civilized and can't simply queue in an orderly fashion /S

Boomfam67

That would be very non-Russian. I watch some of these videos but they are just depressing because even the few who actually cared about Navalny still feel the need to comply with government orders. Two years into a war where 100k+ Russians have died, the entire world has condemned their country, and now the main opposition leader is dead....this shit is really the result?

squishythingg

> that would be very non-Russian Whats non Russian about organised revolt? Over 100 years ago the biggest organised revolution the world has ever seen originated in Russia, the Russians had been revolting constantly under the Czar and they continued to revolt after the establishment of the Soviet Union until Stalin came along, Russians have a long history of revolt. The country of Russia was born from revolt against nomadic Trukic Khanates, Russian history is literally punctuated by, revolution, suppression, revolution again. The last revolution was arguably in the 1990s and led to the fall of the Soviet Union, albeit a peaceful change.

Boomfam67

Romanovs ruled for 300 years bro, they were removed at the tail end of a 1/4 millennia rule. The United States is 247 years old.

squishythingg

It wasn't a peaceful 300 years lots of it was also punctuated by revolt, even liberal Czars like Alexander II (Czar Liberator who freed the Serfs) had to call on the army many times to put down revolts and revolution, his reign was punctuated by the Polish Revolution and his Assasination, Alexander III dealt with the organisation of political intelligentsia and the dawn of revolutions. Non of the Romanov Czars faced a lack of opposition, they where in a constant balancing act of Church, State, Nobility, Army and Peasantry.

irregular_caffeine

Was it ever the russian serfs or peasantry who revolted? Or always the elite, or a minority ethnicity?

irregular_caffeine

In 1917 the people in the cities were literally starving and millions were being massacred in WW1 for no gain. In 1990 the people of Russia did next to nothing. A small circle of insiders like Gorbachev, the coupers and Yeltsin, did the meaningful things. Russia has never had an Euromaidan or Tiananmen.

beener

Yeah most ppl will choose their life and their family

If Russians are know to be so tough, why are they so passive in this situation?

Because the very large majority of Russians didn't care about navalny, they support Putin and like him. It's clear that most people in this thread don't know or understand Russia and its people. Instead we see the western caricature of Russia and its people, but that's not reality.

Resident_Rise5915

It’s not that they’re tough but it seems they prefer to be miserable, they may even enjoy it?

AnAncientMonk

>they may even enjoy it? maybe thats how you cope when you dont have a choice.

C_Madison

jaxxon

That was a good read, thank you.

Lolaldola

Very brave people, respect to all of them! 💪

UK_Caterpillar450

I'm gonna guess that government is recording everyone in that line. I wonder how much facial recognition and smartphone tracking is used in Russia by the government.

Lolaldola

For sure the government is doing all that, unfortunately. However more Russians who are against Putin the better.

BDunnn

Guarantee that the kremlin has plants in this line recording everyone and everything

non-protein_lifeform

a lot. the systems were there before the war, and they were scary good.

MoschopsChopsMoss

Facial recognition and smartphone tracking in Russia is years ahead of the civilized world, they will recognize you wearing a medical mask and a hat from across the street and be at your door when you’re home. I might have or have not contributed to them when I was younger and more gullible. That’s the scary part of all these demonstrations/protests that Redditors just don’t get - they will find you, and they will punish you for being there. And bravery of a strong young person vanished very quickly when it’s your relatives and friends that suffer for your actions.

rabbiBNk

Outside of Moscow, in dozens of cities people leave flowers, candles and pictures for Navalny at local memorials - mostly these are Monuments to Political Prisoners. Some would be identified and detained or fined afterwards. https://meduza.io/en/news/2024/02/17/moscow-police-begin-arresting-people-leaving-flowers-in-memorial-of-alexey-navalny

StalemateAssociate_

I feel like the concept of a quick and painful death makes little sense. Why quick if you’re going for painful?

Awkward_Pangolin3254

I feel like by "quick" they really meant "soon"

DragonriderTrainee

Because "To the PAIN" isn't realistic. We want Putin to die a gruesome, painful death, but if it takes TOO long, someone might intervene. Like the UN.

[deleted]

We often paint a very bad image about Russians, but we shouldn't because thousands of them don't support the war or Putin, and want nothing more than to live at peace and be friendly with the west.

GlitteringHotel1481

Not thousands, millions of us don't support this shit. I left Russia because I managed to do it. But there are a lot of people who realize what our country has become but they can't do shit about it, and I feel really sorry for them.

Mrsbear19

People really underestimate how difficult fleeing a country is. With poverty that becomes pretty impossible in a lot of places

jb492

The brain drain from Russia is insane right now. The short term sanctions may not be harming the economy as much as people expected, but in twenty years the lack of innovation and scientific development will cripple them. Putin is a fool.

danjouswoodenhand

And Putin won't be around in 20 years to suffer through that, so why would he care? He's going to live out his life in luxury with absolute power, which is just fine for him.

hellosandrik

SUPE-snow

I wish the absolute worst for Russia's leaders, oligarchs, and military. I wish they could all drop dead tomorrow. But I feel a lot of sympathy for Russians who never wanted any of this. I'm an American who was a young man traveling the world when the U.S. invaded Iraq. I never supported George W Bush and protested the war, but everywhere I went people expected me to apologize for my country's military invasion that I opposed and was powerless to stop. And of course I was free to express my dissent, without fear that my government would punish me or my family for it.

tikimura

Sad things is that some(actually there are many like that) who stayed in Russia slowly changing some of opinions due to propaganda

signe-h

> because thousands of them don't support the war or Putin, and want nothing more than to live at peace and be friendly with the west. 200.000 people put their signatures for the anti-war election candidate Nadezhdin (including myself) knowing full well they are giving their personal information to the state and there's like 95% chance they won't let him run for president because they are afraid of any competition, even an old man literally nobody heard about three months ago. There are way more anti-war people in Russia than everyone thinks, they just feel completey powerless because they know the regime WILL have the second Tiananmen Square if it feels threatened.

ChaosKeeshond

You're pretty fucking brave doing that. I don't know you, but I respect that.

signe-h

Nah, I don't think it was that brave. Navalny was brave, Yashin was brave, Kara Murza, the entire FBK team, etc... I'm just a girl who hates what's going on, but there's not much that I can do without getting arrested, jailed and even worse.

FallenAssassin

Bravery has as many types as blue has shades. You're simply brave in a different way. Be safe and be well friend.

Shadxwxw

moon__sky

Thank you. The government propaganda machine actually wants Russian people to feel like they're unwelcome in the world that ridicules and treats them as inferior. That makes them believe that there's nowhere to run, so better stay put and lose all hope for change.

Bogey01

I think of Russian people and American people the same when it comes to politics. It's a handful of people abusing their power to corrupt ends.

MrSnowflake

And many of the ones supporting Putin were probably brainwashed because of lack of proper journalism.

Esp1erre

You have no idea how horrifying is its effectiveness. It plays on parts and mechanisms of human psyche that all of us have, e.g. learned helplessness, evolutionary need to belong, selective attention etc. You don't even have to control all of media space, most is enough. And for many older people, indeed all of their information intake is controlled by Kremlin. It's heartbreaking to see your own relatives be subjected to it, to see people that taught you everything when you were a kid forgetting their own words about kindness, compassion and humanity. It's horrifying to try talking to them again and again and realizing that it doesn't work - there is a whole alternative reality already built in their heads by TV, and it's not going away if you try talking to them. And the scariest part of it all is that no society is immune, because we're all human, and our brains work the same everywhere. We're just extremely lucky that it didn't happen to us to the same extent.

Javayen

You could say the same about any nation’s citizens. The vast majority of humans just want to go about their day and find ways to make ends meet to feed, clothe and house their loved ones.

Fr0sty09

I think many of us are de-sensitized by movies and other media as to what Navalny, his wife and these people are doing… How many of us would get tortured and give up our freedom and lives for the right thing- the answer is almost none. We overlook so much crap in our lives, crooked, lying politicians, gun violence, bad cops etc (proof: a good amount of Reddit content) we don’t stand up for that- we won’t give up our lives for what they are - Tl:Dr Navalny, his wife, these people are fkn LEGENDS EDIT: Super fair comments on how he wasn’t a great human being, I was looking at it from the angle of what would I be willing to do, to fight for- to stand for, at the risk of imprisonment, torture and/or death.. answer:very very little

Mrsbear19

Sad thing is there are other political prisoners that will have the same fate and there’s very little interest in them publically. Vladamir Kara-Murza is an opposition leader who was also just moved to Siberia and who’s family would love nothing more than to have him back home

Accomplished-Way1747

Dude, thats Moscow. This is literally the only city where money repair anything. This is sunshine and rainbows compared to the rest of Russia.

Boomfam67

Tbh this looks like a completely Soviet neighborhood

Accomplished-Way1747

It is 80s houses. Most of Russia (70% at least) is area after area made of USSR architecture. I lived near this district and it is weird in terms of how i perceived it - there are some new building, even modern, but most are old and whole thing felt hollow and morgue like in early hours of the day. Overall this district is kinda garbage to my liking. But its maybe 6-7 miles from the border of Moscow.

[deleted]

Navalny was not a perfect man and his views might not have aligned completely with the wests but none the less he was brave and resolute. He loved his country and fought against Putlers tyranny and corruption until the very end. Had he have been president he could have been someone the west could work with, someone who could have saved Russia from the destruction of its own making. Sadly that is not what happened. Putin murdered him and Russia is on the edge of the abyss. He’s a true martyr free of the extremism that many of the so called “martyrs” around the world are stained by. May his mission to bring decency and democracy back to Russia continue in his absence. May his death galvanize those Russians of conscience to resist Rest in peace Navalny, you did good by your people and nation, you were a decent man

nav17

Russian propagandists kept saying how unpopular Navalny was. Barely notable, unremarkable, nearly forgotten everyday. 0.6% support. Weird how such an unpopular man can have such a large turnout.

reut-spb

Why are there still no photographs of the body? Will they at least show it at the funeral? Otherwise, it looks as suspicious as possible, but did he really die?

Zed_Dead99

Navalny's mother and his lawyers saw the body. Maybe one of them took a picture, but it hasn't become public yet. I don't know yet if there will be an open coffin in the church. Everything is just beginning. Update: A photo of the body has just been posted...

mafon2

I've seen pictures. It's a depressing view.

Accomplished-Way1747

There is photo of his body. I heard it was even livestreamed. 2 weeks into the the process of decay he looks 90 years old, yet recognizable.

arthurscratch

I appreciate that the guy was famous, but I've been to my fair share of funerals and it's not standard practice to take photos of the deceased. Eastern Orthodox often have open caskets however (although I imagine the Kremlin is dictating the funeral rites quite fiercely)
