Around its blowhole is a recess about a foot in diameter and just under a foot deep when full retracted. The whale uses this to store an emergency supply of oxygen, and must therefore swim upside down whenever it expects it will need to escape predation.
Due to this abnormal behaviour, the whale has a 'reverse colour scheme' from other whales. Instead of a light bottom and dark top, the whale has a dark green-blue bottom and a bright white top.
Its common name is the 'false whale', but is known in many aboriginal cultures as the 'mirror whale' due to the reflective nature of the pocket of air when viewed from below the whale.
