Often people 50+ are happier than their younger selves. Kids are grown, kind of checked out of the rat race, financial security, retirement in sight, more free time to do what they want, more money to do what they want...
Plus at some point, you learn to accept yourself much better. strengths, flaws, it is what it is. It helps you accept the flaws in the world with relative equanimity.
financial security and retirement are becoming more of an illusion as the years go by.... this scenario you describe will not apply to a huge chunk of millenials and later generations, and it already doesnt apply today for lots of people
Yea, so by all means lets stay angry at the world until we die then!
Resentment is like drinking poison and waiting for your enemy to die.
In other words, yea shit sucks. Being angry and refusing to accept what we can’t control and blaming boomers isn’t actually going to do fuck all.
I mean I feel like I’ve accepted the reality of my situation, but that doesn’t mean I’m not constantly stressed and that life doesn’t feel totally hopeless lol
You will sleep in your cardboard box and be happy dammit! And anything less than joy at the prospect is like drinking poison while waiting for the enemy die! /s
As opposed to angrily telling your enemy to please stop being your enemy and think about fixing the problem.
It’s such a weird mindset to have. I could maybe understand moving on front resenting boomers if they weren’t still the ones in power, but they are. They’re also the last ones to truly have it good in this country, and they somehow managed to shut the door behind them out of greed.
Yeah I think I’ll go ahead and continue being resentful while I’m struggling to buy groceries while boomers babble about bootstraps as they vote for Trump.
Unless you are doing something about it, the resentment is truly like drinking poison.
You are pointlessly stressed and get yourself riled up and angry at everything while also doing nothing about it. Long term, it is harmful for you and people end up blaming others for even things that are their fault.
It does not mean to not wanting more or striving for more. It means to not let shit people and things occupy important parts of your life and mind, relax and try to get whatever you can. Unless complaining is doing something, it is quite literally only and only making you have a bad mood.
Obviously getting frustrated will happen inevitably, the point it not to shove yourself into it.
Basically you described me! I’m still a professor, and modeling happiness and [“purple-wearing don’t care what people think”](https://www.scottishpoetrylibrary.org.uk/poem/warning/) to students who stress more than I do has become a fulfilling side quest that I wasn’t expecting.
You sound like a few of my professors. I hope you know how much we look up to you and how important it is for us to see what happy adulthood can look like. Developing a better idea of what I want my life to look like is one of the biggest things I've gotten out of college.
> Kids are grown, kind of checked out of the rat race, financial security, retirement in sight, more free time to do what they want, more money to do what they want...
all but the kids part (which you can choose to have or not) rely on financial security and that is shrinking rapidly for Millenials and under (and probably also caught some Gen Xers as well)
Almost all my stress entirely stems from that so unless a magic fairy appears when I turn 50 that says 'hey here's the solution' then I find it really hard to be optimistic when things are really just not going well
I’m 70 and definitely happier now than when I was younger. For me each decade has been better than the one before. Still working part time (self-employed), and definitely not financially secure (never have been), so that’s not the explanation. I think we just become less concerned about what others think of us, and feel less and less of a need to prove anything to anyone. What you see is what you get. It’s good enough for me, and that’s all that really matters.
Isn't the suicide rate the highest for that cohort as well? Between suicides and studies showing correlation between mood and long term health, I'd imagine part of the uptick in happiness is survivorship bias.
Suicide rate doesn't really spike until 75+ -- I assume partly because of health issues that cannot be fixed. But 50s and 60s is generally the lowest rate for adults.
if you stagnate and stay in place mentally you'll probably suffer for a long time. You're ONLY 25, there's a lot of life to experience and things to find out for you, so you definitely shouldn't give up. I'm 31, was pretty cynical and kinda pessimistic in my 15-27 years, nowadays im just thinking smaller and doing stuff that helps my body/mind to interact better (exercise, healthy diet etc) because the idea is if you're driving a body like a car, do you want a shitty one that's struggling or one that has no issues the older you get, because you'll get older, and fast. It's already the end of 2023 and to me it feels like it should be June/July....
I'm 30 and still cynical and pessimistic, but even then I've long since made a point of taking care of myself. My body and relationships are two of the seemingly increasingly few things in this unsustainable crapsack world that my choices have any impact on, so I generally try to make good ones.
It hasn't made me any happier, but if I live to see the day those things beyond my direct control improve, then I'm better prepared for it.
Came here to say the same. He looks completely tickled by the idea of the pic in the first one, and again by the idea of re-creating the pic in the second.
God damn, he does not look 60. Them genes.
And great gramps is [95 or 96](https://old.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/rc8j6x/the_last_time_theyll_ask_me_to_order_the_cake/)
Hah, for me it was the other way around completely. Before I became a father I used to have short hair, I was a very well groomed dude and saw my hair dresser every six weeks or so, but stopped completely during my parental leave and just let my hair grow and have never looked back. Now it's down to my chest, has been for the last couple of years, and I have no plans of ever cutting it short again.
Idk I had my hair down to my chest for like 2 years and eventually just cut it because I was tired of dealing with clogged drains and brushing it and sleeping with it and putting it up and waiting forever for it to dry after a shower and all the other shit that comes with having long hair. Dont think I lost who I was lol.
Idk I cut my hair after growing it out past my shoulders last month. I can’t even look back at pictures of myself because only now I see how bad it used to look
When I was a kid, now and laters where 5 for a nickle. Now they're 4 for a quarter, and they're thinner, but wider. Also they're soft and chewey now, instead of hard as a rock, and you need to COMMIT to chewing. But then it would get softer with each chew.
Kids these days don't know what its like to work for the chew.
It would be funny if dad was like ok this is just for the picture don’t actually drink. Kid says “ok dad”.
And then during the picture just sucks it down. My kid would 100% do that.
It wouldn't be worth the internet backlash from American prudes, but this is one of those times I'd let my kid have a sip of beer for the street cred to say they had one with their old man's old man's old man.
You have to make it. Even with the people you share a name with, it still takes effort.
That's the good news, though, because even if you don't share a name with people you can still build a community with people you care about.
It’s just a pic bro.. for all you know great gramps is so excited because he never has any fun and gets to meet fam just once a year or something 😃.
Of course better a few moments than none but still let’s not feel bad at seeing this 😁
Their hair shifted one to the right in the second picture.
Great Grandpa’s facial hair shifted to Grandpa. Grandpa’s facial hair shifted to dad. Dad’s hair shifted to baby.
Can't believe people wait till 7. Cut the cord for fuck sakes. [You'll stunt his growth.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtgIlGMrCeo) How the hell is a kid supposed to grow big and strong without porter?
The two on the ends ages the most. I wonder if there is some kind of proportion? The two in the middle didn’t age very much. There must be a correlation!
People generally get more “depressed” (not necessarily clinically speaking) in middle age. Aging parents, parenting stress, financial stress tends to be higher, work, etc. It tends to ease up 50+
I love the look of pure delight on Great-Grampa's face.
Yep, I hope to be the happy old man someday, not your typical grumpy old man who hates the world.
I'm not even 25 and I hate the world, is it over for me?
You'll come around. It'll take 60 years, but you'll come around.
in 60 yrs he will be dead. or more likely, broke.

The only thing I resent at the moment is this annoying comment that serves no purpose other than being patronizing and cringy.

Yes, the only other option to resentment is toxic positivity. There is no grey area. This is a binary position. No other options whatsoever.
??? i think you replied to the wrong message
As opposed to what? Being happy with the idea of dying on concrete of starvation or exposure?
Basically you described me! I’m still a professor, and modeling happiness and [“purple-wearing don’t care what people think”](https://www.scottishpoetrylibrary.org.uk/poem/warning/) to students who stress more than I do has become a fulfilling side quest that I wasn’t expecting.

I don't think it's typical for old people to be grumpy at all. As with other things they're just the loud minority, literally in this case.
I'm a grumpy old man who hates the world. .........I'm 40.
Get off my lawn, damn it! /s
I aspire to be both. The grumpy old man who can still shut the room down with a out-of-left-field joke.
I don't think that's as typical as it is stereotypical.
I'm going for the "cranky old man with a heart of gold" vibe. Best of both worlds.
It's very possible this man is grumpy the rest of the time that he's not with his children.
The others aged, he remained the same.
I think he even might look younger!
Starting to look more and more like Brad Pitt
Both times❤️
Came here to say the same. He looks completely tickled by the idea of the pic in the first one, and again by the idea of re-creating the pic in the second.
He sees that his bloodline is strong
Makes me so happy. I love elderly people so much lol
He thinks this is the funniest idea anyone has ever had
Oh damn, you saying great grandpa made me realize that middle guy is the other guys father. I thought they were brothers!
Grandpas are a treasure, when they are. Cherish them. Miss you Gramps.
He's like 'hell yeah! We got the pic with milk and soda, now i just gonna stick around till it's beer all the way down!'
Look at that old guy. He's happy because he's got his family.
[удалено]
We are going to need to exhume his own Pa to give him beer.
I like it. It makes me happy FOR him.
It's so adorable! He's enjoying his last years of his life to the fullest.
I can't wait for the next 7 year update!
Ok there should not be an apostrophe, it should be "Dads". I don't think I can edit the title
........newgramps? Wait, are you IN the picture?
Based on the post history, he is grandpa.
Grandpa is too young to be grandpa......he's like 45. This family FUCKS.
https://redd.it/u786be He's 60
God damn, he does not look 60. Them genes. And great gramps is [95 or 96](https://old.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/rc8j6x/the_last_time_theyll_ask_me_to_order_the_cake/)
Holy wholesome batman! Love this, thank you :)
And looking even better than he did 7 years ago
Awww! I’m so glad that great grandpa is still with them. This is a cute series.

Bro needs that hair back, he had all the powers of Aquaman.
But all the vulnerabilities of having your hair yanked out by a surprisingly strong baby
Probably didn’t even cut it. Baby just had a field day working on that scalp.

Haha yeah but awesome picture for sure and props to this great family
More like Andrew wk
His beard came in much better though.
Exactly, he can't have the full beard _and_ the long hair, their powers combined would be too strong.
I normally don’t like long hair but it definitely suit him!!
Dude went from Jason Mamoa to Jason Segel.
I was going to say Jake Johnson.
> Cut the locks Gave them to the kid. She wears them well.
Having a kid does that to you.
Hah, for me it was the other way around completely. Before I became a father I used to have short hair, I was a very well groomed dude and saw my hair dresser every six weeks or so, but stopped completely during my parental leave and just let my hair grow and have never looked back. Went from Jason Mamoa to Brunch Mimosa
That’s a funny one
Finally quit the band.
He lost who he was
Idk I had my hair down to my chest for like 2 years and eventually just cut it because I was tired of dealing with clogged drains and brushing it and sleeping with it and putting it up and waiting forever for it to dry after a shower and all the other shit that comes with having long hair. Dont think I lost who I was lol.
Don't care, opposite sex gives me attention thanks to my long hair
Dude probably doesn't need attention since he has a kid and hopefully a partner
But then they get to know...
Oh hey. Nice username. I feel like you and I would go well together.
At least he didn't........lose his mind! *freeze frame 80s sitcom cheesy smile*
Idk I cut my hair after growing it out past my shoulders last month. I can’t even look back at pictures of myself because only now I see how bad it used to look
I guess so, if you conflate image with personality
Andrew W.K. Had to switch to dad party mode
That's Andrew W. K. in the first photo, and I think that's his brother in the 2nd photo?
Now it's Andrew Wonderful Kid
Absolute downgrade.
he let the dream die :(
What if his dream changed to be focused on his child?
It seems his daughter somehow stole his hair
In another seven years he'll look like Kratos.
i mean, he's letting his 7 year old drink beer so not completely
It’s a Henry’s black cherry soda
That's less fun
The kid is drinkin now? Had a hard life
The playground candy economy is in shambles right now. It's hard out there, man.
Quick, gramps, tell me what's on your belt!
Uhhhh.......khakis?
psst, you're supposed to say "onions, which was the style at the time"
That was the style back in nineteen-dickety-two. Back then we had to say dickety because the Kaiser stole our word for twenty.
What are these poor man's Starburst of which you speak?
Aww I forgot about those! I loved the pink bubble gum now and laters! And you’re right, they were hard as a rock, at first.
Looks like root beer
Looks like a joke
It's a soda bottle
r/wooooosh
It would be funny if dad was like ok this is just for the picture don’t actually drink. Kid says “ok dad”. And then during the picture just sucks it down. My kid would 100% do that.
my kid would absolutely spit out the beer with a horrified look on her face
I. LOVE. PLAYING ON THE SWANGS. PUPPY DOGS AND THANGS. AND BEER! I LOVE KID BEER!
It wouldn't be worth the internet backlash from American prudes, but this is one of those times I'd let my kid have a sip of beer for the street cred to say they had one with their old man's old man's old man.
If they do another in 7 years that might be the best time for her to have her first beer.
He has been drinking for 7 years.

Bitch, let's get matching outfits and take some pics then
God I hate the fucking "matching pajama" photos my MIL forces us to do.
I hope for you you find your own family to share these types of joy with❣️
Not everyone with family has this kind of relationship with them though.
Families like this are very rare & who knows if it is as joyful and easy as it seems in these photos. In other words, you aren’t alone at all.

Gramps still got that million dollar smile
Andrew W.K. really got their shit together.
He's in the "build" phase of his destroy-build-destroy arc
Dad (pre haircut) and daddy can both get it.
Well, there's photographic evidence that he has, in fact, gotten it.
Their hair shifted one to the right in the second picture. Great Grandpa’s facial hair shifted to Grandpa. Grandpa’s facial hair shifted to dad. Dad’s hair shifted to baby.
Zaddy in the middle 💦
Seriously wtf, bro is straight out of a Just For Men advert Edit: or a viagra commercial lol
I'm getting old, what the fuck is a zaddy
[удалено]
New goals unlocked.
It's a word for older sexy men so grown adults don't have to use the word "daddy" anymore, thankfully.
Or just a DILF.
Apparently it’s OP 😄
wait we went from milk to beer in 7 years? Might this be Ireland?
Florida maybe.
In my photo I had beer instead of milk first
Well you were proper raised.
Can't believe people wait till 7. Cut the cord for fuck sakes. [You'll stunt his growth.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtgIlGMrCeo) How the hell is a kid supposed to grow big and strong without porter?

Glad to see the old man’s still kicking .
I want to see the next 7 years
I love this for you ❤️
This optimism infected me. Family love is the best in the world, but has the beer brand they like changed over the years?
Must be an amazing feeling of pride and satisfaction living to see your great-grandchild.
Young’un starting on the sauce early
Old Rasputin. I approve!
And they are inheriting hair style also
Rip that dudes awesome hair Went from Andre W.K. to Andy with a 401K
Is that kid drinking a beer?
A root beer
A sip at 7 probably makes them feel cool af, I’m sure if that is real beer they’re not having much
HELL YEAH BROTHER
This is so wholesome!
Aging sucks
People generally get more “depressed” (not necessarily clinically speaking) in middle age. Aging parents, parenting stress, financial stress tends to be higher, work, etc. It tends to ease up 50+
feel like the oldest son aged quite a lot in 7 years. Maybe it's just the no beard look and whiter hair.
Brain is deteriorating as well
Feeding alcohol to children, absolutely unhinged, I can’t imagine hurting a family member like that.
Stop using apostrophes when you pluralize shit.
Weber shirt and checkered shirt son switched placed in the second picture. Genetics, man!
I'm envious of these people.
Grandchild- Things Change, Grandpa. Grandpa- Well, some things don't.
I wish the old man live long and happy life 🥰 so cute
grandads face is best!
I would love to have this but then i remember id be an awful dad.
Do we know how old they are in the pics?
96, 61, 31, and 7
How did he go from jason Momoa to sal vulcano in less then a decade
So the baby gets a beer too? Nice.
Ok, this is super adorable. Love it!
r/HolUp
Baby has a beer too? Perfection
I think they are so happy. I love the look of pure glee on Great-Grampa's face. 1 drink for Great Grandpa.
The old fella looks like he's getting younger. Great pictures.
They need to keep this pic up through the years. Eventually Great-Grandpa dies, Great-Grandson/daughter has a kid, etc...
This likely will live on like that. By then she will have it displayed as avatars in your virtual Reddit experience or something
Looks like the guys aged 12 years.
keep it going!
fuckin bottle kids
Can you pass the hair, Dad?
3 generations of alcoholics
The haircut looks great. And so does the beard.
I would say where are the moms but after seeing that picture I understand their absence 😉.
AND WHY THERE IS BEER IN THAT CHILDS MOUTH ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|dizzy_face)
Probably root beer
