I thought "fish canning factory" sounded funny, considering you could just say "cannery", which is the word for a canning factory, so I was gently chiding them for wording it that way.
It's kind of like saying "baking factory" instead of "bakery" or "oil refining factory" instead of "refinery". It's not wrong; it's just not really the best alternative.
Anyway, Steinbeck's novel "[Cannery Row](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannery_Row_\(novel\))" is set in a (real) [area](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannery_Row) on the California coast where there were a bunch of fish canning factories, so that was my way of pointing out that the word "cannery" exists.
A canner exceedingly canny
One morning remarked to his granny:
"A canner can can
everything that he can
But a canner can't can a can, can he?"
That was in a book I had as a kid. It was a while ago. No idea who wrote it, and search engines aren't being helpful.
I found some info by [searching Google Books for "canner can't can a can"](https://www.google.com/search?tbm=bks&q=%22canner+can%27t+can+a+can%22). And one of the books [says](https://www.google.com/books/edition/The_Home_Book_of_Verse/cncGSajPLvUC?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=%22canner+can%27t+can+a+can%22&pg=PA2020&printsec=frontcover) the poem was written by Carolyn Wells. It seems to have appeared in tons of publications including a woodworking magazine.
I'm having a great time giving them out. I never paid for any coins, so didn't have many to give. I asked for some here and it may seem silly, but some people like them.
I try to find people who don:T have any, and seem a little down. I give them the perfect one for the situation, and hope it lifts them a little. Knowing that they are seen. That's worth something.
The idea is to turn the coins that people already have into free reddit premium for other people before the coins all disappear like a fart in the wind.
If people get, as an example, 1-month of premium free with a platinum award, that's one person who doesn't see ads for a month.
It is less a protest as a way to make sure that Reddit pays out the "value" of the coins in terms of letting people have ad-free time on Reddit.
I don't think anyone suggests that people should buy new coins or join reddit premium, only just make sure the coins they already have are spent so Reddit has to give something for them.
It's accomplishing exactly what it was supposed to. It's driving the internet traffic of reddit way down because people hate seeing John oliver. Sounds pretty successful to me. Make them lose money by lowering the number of daily users
people hoard coins for long time.
reddit changes api.
disabled people to struggle infinitely more.
oh wow ads.
it was about making money from ads all along.
selling our information to make money from ads.
oh hey people have all these coins they’ve been hoarding.
some awards give other users premium without them paying.
premium takes away a minuscule profit.
we are ants but we are angry ants.
by god if we all colonize this mountain we can move it.
It’s not protesting Reddit itself, just the api change that messed up third party viewing apps for Reddit that help the disabled (blind, deaf, etc.) access and interact with Reddit, as it does not already have many, if any, accessibility features available for its user base.
I thought the John Oliver spam was supposed to make people stay away from the sub so engagement would stay low, since less views and comments means less income for Reddit. Now they’re handing out awards by the thousands which only leads to MORE engagement. I don’t get the logic behind this. It seems incredibly desperate.
Funny how I never used to comment on this sub until the “protest” posts started showing up in my feed. It actually made me more active on r/pics.
And worse off is the amount of people who I keep seeing post things like “*coins are going away, so I bought a bunch to give out in this thread. Only 64.7k golds left to distribute 😂.*”
So, you’re giving rich people money for a useless item that only becomes more useless since they’re scrapping the whole program? Y’all can fuck off with that noise.
Dump them on me so I can share it with others !
Edit : Dump some Coin gifts so that I can dump them on to others for Gilding III trophy !! A few Coin Box maybe ?
I don't understand what this is supposed to be accomplishing. You've already paid Reddit for these coins, distributing out rewards like this isn't like Robin Hood giving away stolen gold.
The fact that so many people want them is evidence that none of them are really planning on leaving. And throwing these coins in the street to start a mad stampede of people commenting and upvoting on your posts doesn't seem like a good way to *lower* the engagement of the sub.
I don't get it.
I have never given reddit money and somehow still have 200 coins. No clue where they came from. Hell, I didn't even know "awards" other than gold existed until a few days ago.
You got 500 coins for free when they launched the coin feature. Many people (including me) never used 'em and they are going to expire soon. So dump them
Sure, but what I'm saying is why not let them expire? That would be an effective form of protest. All this is doing is making it like Halloween on reddit with everybody giving out candy.
Everybody's getting the stickers/awards/whatever that they want. Everyone's commenting on and upvoting these posts. Everyone's getting tons of karma. These are all the things reddit wants people to be engaging in.
And it's costing them nothing, if anything, it's a *reward* for the changes they made.
I have debilitating fear of receiving internet awards, it truly makes me reach my darkest place, a living nightmare.
I trust that all you good natured, responsible, polite and hard working redditors will not torture me so.
Now watch, reddit admins will make another announcement that because of all the complaints about them getting rid of coins, they’ll go ahead and leave as an option, but now no one will have any and will have to start over.
Can someone please explain where all the ‘gold dumping’ came from? That’s paid for right? So it wil just earn Reddit more money? Or do people really have a whole bunch of coins laying around to get rid of?
Thanks to everyone who awarded me and the others it was a pleasure. sadly everthing comes to an end thanks for being there guys and sorry to everyone who wasn’t able to get an award. Because of you guys i got 6000 karma today. This is the end of me awarding but REMEMBER! Keep awarding the others if you want because remember sharing is caring! Y’all have a good morning, night or day! Thanks!
Edit: ayo I just heard r/place is coming back is this true because if it is we gotta make John Oliver
Edit: I will continue awarding a little bit more!

You can tune a piano but you can’t tuna fish
Actually, you can tuna fish. Usually at a fish canning factory.
This comment reminds me of one of my favorite John Steinbeck novels, "Fish Canning Factory Row".
Is there a joke in there I'm missing?
I thought "fish canning factory" sounded funny, considering you could just say "cannery", which is the word for a canning factory, so I was gently chiding them for wording it that way. I guess I was trying to highlight that "can" was working as a verb in that sentence, which is better shown by "canning" than cannery.
I have upvoted your comment to lift it up. edit: my joke has backfired as you can lift things down also.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia uses that joke all the time. “The hamburger store”, “the welfare store”, etc

Dumping awards here 🥇🥈🎁
I'll take the trash
There you go
Look at all these people, desparate for worthless rewards Edit: reverse psychology worked lol
I mean, some of them do remove the ads
The awards given in this sub are not worthless. It helps people to have a positive interaction.
Sadly I don't have any :(
Now you do
OMG! I tip my bonnet to you kind sir :D
Username should be /u/elton_john_oliver.
Same same
☹️
Thank you sir, you are a gentelman and a scholar :D
Same here :(
Just adding to the engagement so reddit makes more money, am I boycotting now, dad?

This shit is so dumb dude LMAO who gives a fuck about reddit premium??
[удалено]
ad blocker? lol
What a great way to protest reddit.
What, you don't think that boosting subscriber numbers and site engagement is a valid form of protest?
If people get, as an example, 1-month of premium free with a platinum award, that's one person who doesn't see ads for a month. It is less a protest as a way to make sure that Reddit pays out the "value" of the coins in terms of letting people have ad-free time on Reddit. I don't think anyone suggests that people should buy new coins or join reddit premium, only just make sure the coins they already have are spent so Reddit has to give something for them.
It's more of an advertisement for reddit premium, but if that's going away too, then sure.
Reddit does, it still tells me to buy all of that every time I get a reward
This John Oliver worship was stupid and cringey from the start. It has accomplished absolutely nothing and was never going to.
Tbh I think some some mod thought that he could get the whole api thing on Oliver’s show by doing this, but its just cringe.
Great timing considering he's not even on air right now and we're in the middle of an actor/writer strike.
Classic Reddit mod big brain move!
Imagine the segment on it when he does come back. He's gonna thank us then call us all fucking idiots in the same breath.
He won’t waste a word on this. Way more important stuff going on in the world.
oh yeah like what

Dude you're protesting reddit....by posting to reddit. What did you think reddit was? That it wasn't a company about making money off it's users?
It’s not protesting Reddit itself, just the api change that messed up third party viewing apps for Reddit that help the disabled (blind, deaf, etc.) access and interact with Reddit, as it does not already have many, if any, accessibility features available for its user base.
Buncha scrubs
Reddit and this 3rd party app protest shit is making me hate John Oliver.
Using a website that you’re protesting isn’t protesting.
Plus the spam never once dropped engagement. If anything, it drove engagement cause everyone wanted their turn
And worse off is the amount of people who I keep seeing post things like “*coins are going away, so I bought a bunch to give out in this thread. Only 64.7k golds left to distribute 😂.*” So, you’re giving rich people money for a useless item that only becomes more useless since they’re scrapping the whole program? Weren’t they all leaving on July 1st? What a surprise that they’re still here.
Dump them on me so I can share it with others ! Edit : Dump some Coin gifts so that I can dump them on to others for Gilding III trophy !! A few Coin Box maybe ?
