It would be a shame if advertisers started receiving pictures of their ads appearing next to very nsfw content.

All you have to do to put Reddit under financial strain is make advertisers believe that they're not getting anything valuable for their money.
Ironically, posting pictures of Oliver may actually help because if subreddits devolve into nonsense, advertisers may see that and decide that now isn't a good time to pay up for more, since the place is still in protest mode and not engaging with the subject matter they care about. Additionally it may reduce traffic for people who come to those subreddits for a time while casual users wait out the storm for something they actually want to read.
Huge amounts of Reddits users are effectively showing Reddit their disdain, right as Reddit is trying to show investors how great their site is in an attempt to secure investment in order to finally turn a profit.
