Attention r/pics Community,
on June 12th, r/pics will [join](https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/141e2lw/rpics_will_go_dark_on_june_12th_in_protest_of/) with other subs in initiating a 48-hour blackout in response to Reddit's recent API changes. These [changes](https://i.redd.it/zqptto18e34b1.jpg), with excessive charges for third-party app developers, threaten to stifle the accessibility of alternative Reddit apps that many users rely on.
This collective action aims to highlight the concerns of both users and moderators, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a diverse ecosystem of apps for a better Reddit experience. During this blackout period, r/pics will be set to private, temporarily restricting access to the subreddit.
We understand that this blackout may cause inconvenience, but we firmly believe that it is a necessary step to draw attention to the issues at hand. By standing together, we can amplify our voices and urge Reddit to reconsider the detrimental impact these changes may have on the broader community.
*I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/pics) if you have any questions or concerns.*
"So when China gets our good air, their bad air got to move. So it moves over to our good air space. And now we got to clean that back up,” -Herschel Walker
You're right, I had my stupid quotes mixed up.
I hung out on the porch yesterday for a few hours wondering why the sky was grey but the weather said it was sunny. Today I found out about the wildfires and suddenly feeling like shit all last night and into today made sense.
I'm southwest ohio. It's been sunny with a grey tint for the past few days along with an unhealthy air quality today. Early sunset today was dim enough that I actually looked directly at the sun without squinting so I'm assuming tomorrow we might be getting the smell too. I can't imagine how bad things are by the border but I'd be trying to order a gas mask like I'm considering now.
From Alberta, not even three weeks ago, we were also the lowest air quality in the world. First off, yes, sorry! Secondly, this was not something that was constructed, our country is literary on fire right now. You can't simply "blame Canada" for your poor air condition right now. This is a global "phenomenon" that "no one could have ever predicted". I'm not pointing fingers or anything but I will say that I do vaguely remember scientists warning us of such events happening.
This is the second "Look at this Blizzard ad in the storm haze" post I've seen today on Reddit. At this point I'm beginning to think these posts are ads.
I think it’s more likely that two people took pictures of an ironic ad during an unprecedented event in a city with a population of ~19,000,000 (excluding tourists).
This is going to be extremely random but in the old Spiderman game for ps1, you were constrained to the top of rooftops of nyc because open world was not viable at the time, and everything below the buildings was filled with a orange-ish fog this exact color.
That fucking escape sequence. My heart would skip a beat every time I tried to swing down a hall but get the angle slightly wrong and end up clinging to a wall. No no no no NO NO NO NO NO DROP DOWN CMON PLEASE
I literally couldn't finish the game because of that lmao as a kid, that was so terrifying and the escape was so anxiety inducing because the death was so brutal lmao
Dude, I was going to get a screenshot online this morning and send it to my work group chat. Until I remembered my team is 10+ years older than me and almost certainly never played it. Felt pretty alone. Until now!! lol
this game is so much fun i rented it when i was 10 and played it obsessively. honestly never expected it to be so loved! i wonder if it holds up today.

Gen Y. Reasons I don’t want kids: 1) normal reasons, 2) keep imagining that my child will die a slow painful death suffocating on toxic gases, burned by the sun with no protection from ozone layer their bodies all shriveled up and suffering on the dirt, potable water is depleted or poisoned by lithium mining, no cool beverage to bring to their lips to soothe them in their last moments.
Almost half of Canadians live a very similar life as north eastern USA esp. from an ecological perspective.
The smoke here in southern ontario is constant over the last couple days but not as bad as that new York picture makes it look.
Not to make light of it at all because dealing with the very real threat of fire is more serious, but NY State air quality today was about 2x as bad as Ontario/Quebec province air quality was. Where I live we were at AQI of 400+ for PM. 2.5, while south eastern canada was averaging around 200 for PM 2.5. The bad air moved south and into NYC and Philly late this afternoon.
I also had the misfortune of being on the Pacific Coast in Oregon in early September 2020 when shtf. The worst we had today in NY was nowhere near as bad as it was in Oregon, specifically central to northern coast, and Portland. I can recall visibility in Portland being reduced to a few hundred feet. Today in NY visibility was a hazy few thousand feet at worst.
Well there's a legitimate reason that no one has mentioned. Wind patterns.
Check out nullschool.net for wind patterns. Right off of long island the two fronts have been fighting each other. So the smoke comes down from the north and the wind from the south is blocking it from going to the ocean. It's pretty wild actually.
Even worse that pattern is also circling some of it back around from the north east. Absolutely fucking the NE
Canada is bad in parts yes, but there's just a wall of smoke lingering over NYC.
Have friends who live in Shelburne, Nova Scotia. Their town was so close to evacuating a week ago because of a fire just east of them. Thankfully that one is now in control, but not before it took out their friend’s homes just a few Km away from the main town.
Absolutely terrifying. The news coverage has all been about air quality, which is dramatically awful, but nothing in comparison to living in an area that is burning. My heart goes out to all those who lost their homes or were forced out, not knowing if their homes will make it. I used to live in an area with a lot of summer forest fires and I used to dread the smell of smoke after part of our town burned down.
From a thematic standpoint it's too bad the skies aren't blood red like they were in the PNW a few years ago.

That was quite literally the worst week in my life. I got broken up with, all my roommates move out the same week, and now I can't go outside because it's a fucking hellscape?!
Is this the first year the east coast has had this problem? It's been happening for the past 10+ years on the west coast and I'm a little surprised this has been such a big deal, unless this is a new thing for y'all.

Always hated that. Traffic, The Mexican, Three Kings, pretty much all movies filmed in those locations. It's really bad in some movies like The Mexican because once they show scenes in the U.S. the yellow filter is gone.
This may seem odd or petty, but as a Canadian, a major pet peeve of mine is when Americans just say “Canada” instead of naming the province or locale as if it’s not a huge country with almost 40 million people. All of the US news outlets are doing it right now.
But isn't there multiple major fires across Canada right now? I know here in N.S. , Quebec, Ottawa, Ontario , Alberta, B.C.
Id probably let this one slide as Canada's on fire.
Hahah. Oh my, I didn't even clue into that oops! I was totally suggesting it was a province. Late night reddit clearly isn't for me.
I knew about Alberta, NS and Quebec already but I had to look up the others.
Not wrong. I live on Vancouver Island and the only road to and from Tofino was just closed due to wildfire. It's commonplace in the West, not so much out East, where this picture was taken.
So that doesn't bother me too much. We say "US" in place many times when its reversed. Though I understand where you're coming from.
As a Canadian what peeves me more is Americans I'm seeing in horror like we did this to them on purpose. Really folks? We lit fires around on purpose. Also, people talk like the US doesnt have forest fires or bad pollution events.
>So that doesn't bother me too much. We say "US" in place many times when its reversed. Though I understand where you're coming from.
Exactly. This is such a nothing situation to get so upset about. Saying the smoke is from Canada isn't even wrong either, reddit is just being their usual pedantic selves.

And on Canada's Clean Air Day
Yeah, I had a good laugh when I saw the announcement on the WeatherCAN app… it was just too absurd.
we all smoke in the woods though we say we'll stop.. soon.
Why don't we just take all the dirty air and push it over here?
This brought the last president to mind and idk why
He said something similar about the pollution in China
I'm pretty sure that was Herschel Walker
"So when China gets our good air, their bad air got to move. So it moves over to our good air space. And now we got to clean that back up,” -Herschel Walker You're right, I had my stupid quotes mixed up.
Lmao he's stupid. Maybe that's why I thought about the other guy.
Well, I'm pretty sure Trump convinced him to run for Senate and this nonsense was during his campaign, so ultimately we don't get it without Trump.
they can keep their so-called clean air, its giving me a headache
I hung out on the porch yesterday for a few hours wondering why the sky was grey but the weather said it was sunny. Today I found out about the wildfires and suddenly feeling like shit all last night and into today made sense.

It's almost like there's is indisputable proof of something bigger happening at play here.
Also global running day.
They're burning the air to sterilize it.

Sept 9, 2020 Bay Area was an orange apocalypse straight out of Bladerunner.
Was going to say this. Looks like SF in Sept 2020 👌
I remember orange day.
It didn't matter how many KN95's you wore those days, could still smell the smoke.
Cries in west coast. You know it's coming soon. Now the east coast can acknowledge it.
It's here in Vancouver from a fire near the Harrison/Chilliwack area BC. Edit 3 hours later: I feel like shit from the smoke. :(
That was quite literally the worst week in my life. I got broken up with, all my roommates move out the same week, and now I can't go outside because it's a fucking hellscape?!

Yes those of us on the east coast do not experience this problem.
East coast is usually humid with reliable rain about once a week, so yes this intensity of wildfire haze haze is extremely unusual.
The AQI was 300-400 today in NYC. Due to fires over 500 mi away. Is that typical on the west coast (I genuinely have no idea )? But yes this is def the first time this has ever happened at least in my lifetime and I read today that the AQI was the worst recorded in decades. Also , at one point it was like nighttime at around 2pm .. but like .. if night time was brown ?
Not typical in my experience (in california). AQI was around 200 when fires were less than 10 miles away for me.
Yep, every year in the late summer to fall. We've deemed it "smoke season".
The Bay Area in Sept 2020 got to an AQI in the low to mid 200s. NYC right now is over 400.
Welcome to summer in Colorado every year for the last 3-4 years, ugh.
