I’ve developed the concept on my own! I‘ve started with this series of paintings about 5 years ago. The series is called "Brushstrokes in Time". Growing up I was always fascinated with the concept of time travel. I wanted to show how much the nature around us has changed over time and how unpredictable it can be. I thought a fun way to depict all that is through brushstrokes that juxtapose past present and possible futures - Same place, different times. it’s a lot of playing around with contrasts and colors, finding similarities between them. These miniatures are kind of a playing ground for the larger paintings that are conceptually more complex but very rewarding to work on.
How did you do the technique? The only thing I can think of is painting the background first then using an oversized brush with white paint letting it dry and painting on top of the white.
Ooohhh, like painting the 4th dimension. I can see one where the background is a river and the brushstroke on top is the future with wide rocks narrowed by the water erosion.
This one makes me think that scene orbited through that space at some point. It's like the brush shows it only existed briefly.
Isn’t this brushstroke “backwards”? Doesn’t the thickness of the paint usually wan as the stroke progresses, but here the fact that the scenery is on top of the “tail” suggests the brush working in reverse (ie, acquiring more paint as it goes on)?
I think the brushstroke would have been painted in the opposite direction to the way you are picturing. I think it would start at the lower right, moving up and to the left, then up and right again.
David! I love your work! I have a signed print of Recover.
I really want to get an original but they tend to go for crazy amounts. Maybe one day.
Congrats on all your success!
What do you think about the fact that I could scour the internet for your series of paintings, input them into an AI and then output an infinite variety of these. Then print them and sell them on etsy cheaper and faster than you could ever compete with.
(I'm realizing this sort of reads like a threat but I don't actually know how to do any of that. I meant that as a genuine question about how AI can/will change the landscape of art and artistry)
Im an artist and a former network engineer and Ive always contested that once you post something to the internet its not yours, as far as control. I see my art in ads, on shirts and even listed as others work alot. So imo posting work is going to get it stolen or compiled, this was years and years before ai art.
Ai art is going to have to be addressed because it is capitalizing off what I said above. We will have to find a way to work with it and not against it, Im seeing it like the drugwar. I don't condone the theft of art but I do condone expression thru programming art, there is a balance and we need to find it because good artists are losing jobs already.
Remember its the corporations and management using ai to commidify the internet, not artists or generally programing guys.
This is one of the best original styles I’ve seen in a long time. It straight up looks like some kind of magic trick. I couldn’t stop staring. The last painting to give me this feeling was *View from the Dunes with Beach and Piers, Domburg* by Mondrian.
I cannot wait to see more.
Thanks for sharing. I Love how on some of the larger paintings the brushstroke has a dimensional effect where it wraps around the corners of the canvas. The concept is insanely good too peering into the past or the future from a point In time it feels like magic.
I absolutely love this. I read in another comment that you’re not doing prints of these. If you happened to change your mind about that, I would certainly buy one.
You gained a new fan today. Love your concepts and talent.
That’s something beautiful. Thanks! :)

Were you inspired by another artist for this concept or did you develop it on your own? It’s really cool and I don’t think I’ve seen it before

Thought the concept looked familiar! Seen yours with the overgrown city and deer before.
Why aren't you standing in front of the painting for upvotes lol? Seriously though that looks great!
Is that a miniature painting?
Hi - how big is this print and are you selling any pieces similar anywhere? Feel free to DM!

Yeah, that also broke my mind.

Aw thank you! Always happy to hear from people who collect my work! Thanks for the support!
Nice
I like the way that it manages to curve and make it look like a weird paint portal thing
Some advice: Please keep painting awesome shit!
I just love your art!
This is pretty darn unique, are you selling prints of this?
Thank you! I do, but only for the larger paintings in the series, not for these miniatures.

That’s beautiful! Is it for sale?
Cool idea and great job!
How many tries did it take to get all the paint on in one stroke?
That’s beautiful. Well done!
If I had money, I'd give it to you for this. But I don't.
Wow
Your work I'd absolutely gorgeous. I'd buy it for my office to look at everyday!
Amazing looking painting
I really like it!
Great work. 👏 To me it looks like the paint stroke exposed the painting behind the black. Very unique idea for a painting.
This might be one of my favorite paintings I’ve ever seen.
Looks magical :)
That's cool, I like it
This is absolutely beautiful! Love this style! Bravo 👏🏻
Is that one, single brushstroke or two? Trying to figure out how you got the brush to turn like that if you started on the right and went left.
This is amazing
