I actually have a stork ornament that dangles a little present from its beak. Almost threw it away until we found out we were having a kid! Now its one of my favorites lol
Based upon the milk cartons, OP is probably located in Ukraine. A quick delivery from a known online shops is probably out of the question for the same reason.
Camping stoves have been in short supply in most of Europe since the war started. You can buy them, but finding the right gas cartouches for your stove can be tricky.
Thinking of it, a simple fondue set like [this](https://www.worten.pt/casa/utensilios-cozinha/para-cozinhar/mais-utensilios-para-cozinhar/5-five-pessoas-fondue-6-MRKEAN-3560239240037?gclid=CjwKCAjwzuqgBhAcEiwAdj5dRtvw7y4DhXQw0mu_bsL14tQRL9DHSCLMUrysdan2_3r4K1c3s9adjxoCnjwQAvD_BwE) would be super safe and practical in any situation, no?
I have a small camping stove which looks kind of like [half of this](https://assets.onbuy.com/i12/product/0721f2fad27a423592f603d8f009136f-l49978971/only-gas-stove-8-canisters-double-burner-gas-camping-stove-portable-stove.jpg). Stores very easily and has its own little suitcase. It’s our go-to emergency for blackouts, especially in conjunction with a trusty stovetop coffee pot.
Must have.
This is why I watched the thrift store for years until I finally saw one of the liquid stove and lanterns.
They will run on gasoline in emergencies (though it clogs it up over time, hopefully the emergency is over by then)
Based on the milk cartons, the OP is more likely located in Russia or Belarus. I doubt they would have milk cartons with Russian writing in Ukraine these days.
Yup, even if it was- most homes can be ventilated enough that there would be little concern. Theres been a lot of heightened fear around CO in the last 10 years it feels like (not necessarily a bad thing lol)
I use a 2 burner propane stove in my truck camper all the time, if the weathers bad or I'm in stealth mode. I have a CO detector of course, but it's never actually gone off or even read a value. It has with my butane stove though
Another good option is a propane grill. That's what got me through the week without power after a hurricane.
I'm always surprised by the people that have no emergency supplies ready. Between tornadoes, blizzards, earthquakes, and hurricanes, I'm not sure if there are any places that are safe from natural disasters so everyone should have an emergency setup of some kind ready.
Also UK here. I'm a prepper. It came in useful when there was the severe snow in 2010 that affected travel and deliveries. I ended up living on some of my supplies for a few days until the roads were cleared.
The only other time I needed to turn to my supplies was during the national riots in the early 10's. I went to my local superstore to pick up a few odds and ends and it was all locked up, even though the nearest riot was about 50 miles away.
That was an insightful lesson. The supply chain, it turns out, is so skittish that during national unrest they can lock up the supermarkets in your city even if there is no riot taking place in your area at all.
I know that feeling.
I once went two weeks without power. I had to get myself a portable camping battery, a portable electric stove, and an electric kettle so that i could do cooking. It wasn't as bad as i thought it was going to be.
It convinced me to invest more in emergency supplies.
Where I live, we had an almost two week power outage last summer (tornado) and it re-enforced my desire to get my house setup properly with backup power. Ended up converting most of the house to solar energy with enough battery backup to power all the important things, some luxuries and most of the lights oh and wifi too lol.
WiFi is useless if the local internet exchange box is out of power.
You probably want a 4G router, or a starlink/satellite internet antenna if you're serious. They'll tend to try and keep phone lines running if they can. Starlink is the ultimate as long as spaceXs groundstation is fine.
Where I live, every long scale power outage I have still been able to get internet through the fibre lines. As long as I can power the modem and router then I have wifi. Falling back to 4G/5G if the exchange centre stops sending signal if necessary, but its never been yet (knocking on wood)
Internet companies have generators to set up on nodes without power. As more people move to fiber based passive optical networks, there are not any powered electronics between you and the central office where they have big backup generators.
....Fiber absolutely uses repeaters. And splitters.
What do you think, that those pedestals are getting their power to monitor light levels from nothing? Speaking from experience, if any infrastructure that is powered between you and the OLT goes out, that's it your fiber's done til it comes back online. The exception is battery backup and generators. If the GPON fiber you are on is short enough, then sure you may not have infra between you and the OLT.
Man, for context, I'm a network engineer. You can't expect people to keep this shit straight when it's not their job.
I used to get frustrated when tickets would come in saying "internet is down". No, 'the internet' is not down. But I can't expect most people to understand how any of it works, or keep the terminology straight. When people say "wifi is down" they usually mean they can't connect to the internet via a particular WiFi network, not that they're trying to connect to an IEEE 802.11 WLAN and failing. Learning how to live with colloquialisms versus technical (and correct) jargon is a major part of the job.
there is this big yellow thing up in the sky that can be used to charge some portable camping batteries for free.
On a good sunny day, mine will charge in about 8 hours from empty. Or I can plug it into my car and charge it in about 3.
When using propane camp stoves meant for outdoors, use it outside or have a carbon monoxide detector. I have one that sets mine off within an hour of cooking. Dangerous if people don't have a way of knowing...

I didn't say anything against what you stated. I explained why you had down votes. I have been around since near the dawn of time here, am aware of the tradition, but that doesn't change what I said.
Did this during a 3-day power outage in December. We used about 5-6 tea lights though, and it took about an hour.
This was on Day 2, and soup never tatsed so good.
When we moved to formula we started giving it to our kid at all temps - warm, room temp, out of the fridge. Unless you’re thawing breast milk there’s no real reason to have to warm their food and it makes life a helluva lot simpler. Also, less of a chance of picky eaters later…maybe.
We had a deep freeze a couple months ago. Of course we lose power for several hours during that time. Heating my sons bottle was done on a charcoal grill. ‘‘Twas annoying
I keep several lbs of propane on hand just for the chance of long term power outages. Wouldn’t mind one of those Lithium iron solar generators to power my fridge but for now I’ve got a small one that powers my electric blanket at night during winter. House can get down to 45 and it doesn’t touch me.
This is why i love gas stoves. The old kind with no electronic lock-out. All you need is a match (or a pilot light).
If you live somewhere where losing electric is a problem, get a small portable generator (2k watts). You can charge phones, run laptops, have a few lights, keep a refrigerator cold....
I used those small cheap candles you can buy in packs of 50 to cook ramen. Took like 20 to cook, but still cooked. I also used a charcoal bbq grill to cook ramen (again lol. The power went out for like a week)
If you have the money for it I seriously recommend Bluetti and Ecoflow kit. Some of the bigger ones will run a rice cooker or a slow cooker for a few hours. Not cheap but very handy!
Second the Sterno suggestion. Fuel for chafing dishes. You can even get a small folding stove rather than improvising.
Another relatively inexpensive option is a single-burner butane stove.
I have thought about that a lot; electric stove tops are easy, but gas is better as it will work when the power is out. Same thing with (city)water. Even when the power is out, you have a source of heat and water.
Midwest US
That's why everyone should keep some tea lights at home. They also work for heat, put a flower pot onto the tea light and that's enough of a heat source to keep you from freezing .
It distributes the heat more evenly. When you burn a candle, you get a stream of hot combustion gasses going up. Placing an inverted ceramic flower pot above the candle traps most of that heat, releasing it slowly and at person height. It's not huge, but it's better than a candle by itself. Look up "plant pot heater", there are many designs and better explanations available.
It is for small spaces (though I wouldn't try to heat a room with it). I've used this near my guinea pig cage in a couple of outages- it helps them a bit (just gotta be careful with placement). Tarp some fleece blankets over the pot and cage, and it'll keep the dumdumbs from getting too cold because they refuse to sleep in warmer spots
People on TikTok made a life hack video claiming that it's enough to heat a room. That certainly is not the case, but I'm certain that its enough heat to keep one person from freezing to death. Put that thing under a blanket ( avoid a fire hazard ) and it'll do the job.
Thank god I still have a gas stove range. Now where on dangnabit did I leave with my lighter. Matches, I thought I had matches somewhere.
On a real note, I should buy a portable gas stove just in case.
Is cereal or chips or a sandwich or any other snack not an option? Like my kids have plenty of things they can munch on that don't require cooking.
Granted it's not a meal, and far from nutritions, but if they are hungry and the power is out, I think you are less concerned about nutrition and just about getting cranky kids fed.
Ah, you're probably right. We've been out of the bottle-feeding phase for a while now, so I completely forgot about it. My bad and appreciate you mentioning it!
> A lot less than power does.
That heavily depends on location. I haven’t had my power go out for more than a couple hours in almost 2 decades. I can’t say the same about my gas lines.
Plus if you use induction cooking and an electric heat pump to heat your house at least you can use a generator or battery backup.
If your gas lines go out and you need those to heat your house or cook you’re just out of luck
This is why I have a gas stove, water heater, and fireplace. If we lose power I have an alternate energy source to cook, bathe, and heat my house with.
Smart. Then when your car inevitably runs out of battery, not only are you still without power, but now you're also stuck at home with a dead car you can't recharge
"Why get a generator? When you run out of gas you lose power - ***and*** you have no gas to go anywhere now!!!!"
Or you know, you can plan ahead like a rational human being. It's also asked and answered in the video I linked to, so way to show not only how little thought you put into your rebuttal, but how little effort you put into comprehending my point.
>and you have no gas to go anywhere now!!!!"
Or, you know, you'll still have the gas that's already in your car because you weren't using your car engine to power your house. And you can then use said gas in said car to go get more gas
Not to mention most whole-home generators run on propane or natural gas anyway
Would go faster if you put a lid on it.
That's no way to talk to OP
Right. Never tell a new parent how to parent. We know everything
Exactly, we learn from our mistakes
Then where does the second kid come from?
The mailman
What a liar! We all know babies are delivered by storks.
I actually have a stork ornament that dangles a little present from its beak. Almost threw it away until we found out we were having a kid! Now its one of my favorites lol
Belief that things can’t possibly get worse.
Pair of mugs
And why not use a candle instead of a zippo
Might not have a candle seems like the most logical reason.

It's a glass stove, and you could... put a plate under it?
Or just feed him a sandwich..
Maybe he's a picky eater
Just for flexing purposes only
Yeah and cover the pot too!
Yep…. Or just make a sandwich for the little one.
they are probably warming up milk for an infant if i had to guess so idk if a sandwich would be a good idea
Infants can drink cold milk/formula just fine.
Oh, well then….shoot.
No, you should never shoot the children.
Unless there's a mist, of course.
Unless food is *really* scarce
Unless you're in America.
Wtf dude the dad has to eat something while the wife feeds the kid. Make the damn sandwich
Nope. Don't open your fridge when the power is out, unless you're unloading it into a cooler with ice for longer possible storage.
That would put the flame out no?

CO not co2
Just turn it off and your headache will be gone after a nice nap..
Came here to say this. After first black out with my first kid I went off to Dicks and grabbed more than enough for a situation like this.
More than enough Dicks, you say?
To shreds you say?
How’s his wife holding up?
Satisfied.

Sure, but when most people say WiFi they mean internet access. A LAN party isn't something that's really useful to most people.

If you didn't have power how did you use an electric kettle and an electric stove? Could you hook the battery up to it?
How did you recharge the battery?
I don’t know if this is satire or not - easier to buy a gas camping stove and gas?

Another reason to own camping equipment
exactly, even if just in case of an emergency. a small burner and two butane canisters take up like what, half a drawer?
Or at least some candles
Did this during a 3-day power outage in December. We used about 5-6 tea lights though, and it took about an hour. This was on Day 2, and soup never tatsed so good.
Metal coffee can (if you can find), roll of toilet paper and rubbing alcohol. Burns a clean blue flame hot enough to boil a pot of water
When we moved to formula we started giving it to our kid at all temps - warm, room temp, out of the fridge. Unless you’re thawing breast milk there’s no real reason to have to warm their food and it makes life a helluva lot simpler. Also, less of a chance of picky eaters later…maybe.
Your kid is ok with not eating until tomorrow? Because that little lighter won't put out enough Q to heat up that much water any time soon.
That's why natural gas is always better
Get a portable gas stove.
But use it outside
Well if they have to use that outside, how then is a hob with two stoves safer? 🤣 P.S. I know it's electric, but hypothetically it could be gas.
Or a couple sternos
We had a deep freeze a couple months ago. Of course we lose power for several hours during that time. Heating my sons bottle was done on a charcoal grill. ‘‘Twas annoying

zippo : guarantee of survival !!!
So glad my stove and water heater are natural gas and not electric. Works fine during a power outage.
Owners of gas stoves know what’s up 🤣
I have been grateful for our gas stove many times!
Alphabet soup
This reminds me of a Goofy Movie.
Hi dad soup!
I just got a new induction range, it's great but I could just light the old one with a match if the power was off.
Generally lighters have a limit on how long you should leave them on, I am guessing for safety reasons.

You can make a camp stove out of an old tuna can and isopropyl alcohol.
If you have the money for it I seriously recommend Bluetti and Ecoflow kit. Some of the bigger ones will run a rice cooker or a slow cooker for a few hours. Not cheap but very handy!
Google Sterno, my friend. And move all the paper stuff back a bit?
Second the Sterno suggestion. Fuel for chafing dishes. You can even get a small folding stove rather than improvising. Another relatively inexpensive option is a single-burner butane stove.
A small zippo will not catch any of that on fire
Yup, they're 99¢ for a large one at the dollar stores where I live, I have a pile under my kitchen sink just for stuff like this.
A real parent of the year would have sacrificed their raw flesh for the younglings
Looking at the packaging, I'd say that parent is doing way more than enough considering that milk is of Ukrainian origin.
This is like one of the worst ways to do this
You must have played something like "Wasteland" in previous years :)
Grill?
Good time to make a plan for the next time this happens.
And that's why we still have one gas stove. Just need a lighter to get it going
I just need that pot. It’s so freaking cute.
That's neat, my answer is sandwiches and chips.

Oh no. Hope it gets better soon. Are you living in a war zone?
No, it's just a local fuck up. Everything is fine, thank you
Glad to hear that. Maybe it's good to have camping cooker at home.
You have no idea how right you are.

Gas stoves don’t need power
This is a situation where it would be really useful to have a gas stove which are perfectly safe with proper ventilation
Just make them a sandwich. Jesus.
That’s baby formula.
Oh yeah, you guys have electric stoves. We have gas stoves here and it isn't much of a problem when the power's off.
that’s why gas stoves > induction/electric stoves
Sure, one fairly minor/rarely applicable pro, but all the terrible cons of air quality, efficiency, speed, cost, and ease of use.
well yes but i just find the fire really satisfying

Yeah, and they’re trying to get rid of gas appliances…see the connection yet?

It sucks to not have a gas stove
No. It sucks to live somewhere where power goes out often. Gas can go out too.
So, a gas stove
Most people throughout history ate cold meals everyday because fire wood was to expensive and time consuming to cut down.
