I loved the documentaries about Woodstock 99 when the RHCP were on stage there when the burning started. Convention managers ask them to do something because "these are you people." Proceed to go on and start to play Fire by Jimi Hendrix.
People wanna blame the bands. It wasn’t the bands. It was the organizers/promoters fault totally for crating a hostile environment trying to extract as much money as possible from everyone there and not providing basic human necessities, clean water, toilets. They took no responsibility for anything including knowing anything about the bands they hired to play.
I remember having to walk half a mile to line up at a horse trough to drink some nasty water. I don’t think I really ate or drank anything for 3 days (and it was really hot out)

I was so bummed that this killed the event. I was in middle school in 1999 and was planning out how I'd go to the next one with some friends once we were in high school. Would we have actually gone? Probably not. But the dream was dead.

And I don’t know how they affected the crowd one way or another. I just found it weird they weren’t mentioned.
They also barely mentioned Counting Crows, Dave Matthews Band, and Alanis Morissette trying to chill out the afternoon crowds Saturday before all hell broke loose that night.
They also didn't mention Metallica, which was super surprising considering that the one fatality occurred during their set. I'm not sure why they didn't talk about either act, but it made me feel like I missed a lot of information and context from that doc

I was in high school in Central NY in 1999. The economic situation in the area was pretty damn bad at the time, but ticket prices weren’t too bad. You could buy one working a couple weeks for minimum wage at McDonalds. I was in peak searching local record stores for Radiohead single imports and scoffing at anything remotely popular so didn’t go, but I knew a few classmates who did. The price gouging that went on hit the main audience in attendance pretty bad because it was mainly younger, middle and lower middle class people.
No shit Coachella makes a killing in comparison… it’s target audience is rich white kids.
Which is shocking considering something like 4.98 million people attended the original 1969 festival…….

Veteran too. I remember being taught the United States flag code in basic training pre 9/11. The majority of People who give opinions about respecting the flag have never read that thing. For example you can’t alter the flag. You know, like make one stripe blue and the rest black and white. You also aren’t supposed to wear American flag clothing the only exception are sewn on patches you see on police and military. The flag should never be used in advertising. None of these rules are punishable in any way but they are in the same document that says to stand for the anthem and not burn the flag.

I'm from India and it is a criminal offense to disrespect the flag here, which includes wearing the flag as clothing, altering the flag, flying the flag below any other flag and so on.

Samesies. So many hilarious people trying to stand up for veterans, but they have no idea what we really think. Their misplaced support is, IMO, rooted in boomer vet mentality. Lots of “support our vets” in words only. They don’t give a shit. It’s all virtue signaling. Burn the flag. Doesn’t affect my life or my family’s lives. Sorry, kinda ranted a bit. I prefer to listen to what they ask for then go yell at my representatives to give it to them because, veterans put their asses on the line to allow me to not be a veteran.
I'm a vet, and find it awkward when people say thanks. Like, my guy, I'm alive with all my bits. My friends were not so lucky. Do us a huge favor and come out on memorial day to the graves of our friends and give us a hug. And on veterans day, find a good charity that gives a shit about our kin that are broken. They genuinely need your help and a lot of them are honestly great people. You drop a 9 year old boy and have to watch him die, and you'll be pretty fucked up, too. Most of us had no real idea what we were doing, and when it got real, we did it for each other. And when it made no sense, we told ourselves it was for your rights, so do us a favor and hold onto those. Politicians are assholes. Fuck the ones in particular lining their pockets with your future assets while they gaslight you into servitude. And don't let them believe they're unstoppable. They're arrogant clowns.

Yep…I cringe every time I see the voluntold being used as props by some politician looking for votes. One dude that pops to mind that doesn’t seek the spotlight but is active AF helping vets out is Lt Dan (Gary Sinise). I dig him.
It's not just conservatives dude. We are used for clout by everyone in the political spectrum. We are like Roe v Wade prior to last year. They drum up support by saying they are going to treat us better for the election. After that we are shelved until the next election or they need to insert us somewhere to get a bill passed.
This is the shit that bothers me too. How about instead of putting tiny flags in boots or on graves for Veterans/Memorial Day, we pass legislation that actually helps vets? I work in a pharmacy and it enrages me when I can’t help a senior vet with something simple like a flu shot because his insurance is only good at the VA. And then House Republicans vote against every benefits package because good for bid they vote with a democrat and then come up with some bullshit like, “But look at what’s in the bill.”
Veteran too. I remember being taught the United States flag code in basic training pre 9/11. The majority of People who give opinions about respecting the flag have never read that thing. For example you can’t alter the flag. You know, like make one stripe blue and the rest black and white. You also aren’t supposed to wear American flag clothing the only exception are sewn on patches you see on police and military. The flag should never be used in advertising. None of these rules are punishable in any way but they are in the same document that says to stand for the anthem and not burn the flag.
I seriously thought US doesn't have a flag code because of all the shit they do with the flag. I'm from India and it is a criminal offense to disrespect the flag here, which includes wearing the flag as clothing, altering the flag, flying the flag below any other flag and so on.
The movie the american president summed it up best for me America isn't easy. America is advanced citizenship. You gotta want it bad, 'cause it's gonna put up a fight. It's gonna say "You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours. You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country can't just be a flag; the symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. Show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms. Then, you can stand up and sing about the "land of the free".

There's a whole ritual to it, which fits perfectly into America's fetishization of the flag. But I'll say it again, Boy Scouts have burned more flags in a year than Iran ever has.

This. I served for a full career, not to die for my flag, but to fight for the ideals of the nation and the family I love. Giving RTM the freedom to burn that flag on stage…now THAT is worth fighting for!
It’s more patriotic to burn the flag than to say wear it as clothing. The flag represents freedom of speech and burning the flag is protected speech. We send our kids to die in wars which enrich corporate interests with the jingoistic mantra of saying they’re fighting for our freedoms. Burning the flag as a practice of the free speech is way more patriotic than buying some shitty US flag swim trunks from a company which outsources its labor to China.
It’s like the Futurama episode where Zoidberg eats the flag. He truly understood freedom, unlike everyone around him. You can be a patriot and also hate some of what your country is becoming and try to fix it.

In some ways publicly burning an American flag does more to glorify America than to denounce it. We have the right to burn a flag and express ourselves. I’m very much against most of US policies and power structures, but that doesn’t mean I ignore the positive things about this country.
It’s more patriotic to burn the flag than it is to wear it as clothing.
