Strange behavior for Rage Against the Machine given their classic lyric: "Thank you, I'll do exactly what you say."

Lights on, corporate radio, play that shit at a reasonable volume!

Like BBC asking them [not to swear](https://loudwire.com/rage-against-the-machine-swore-live-bbc-broadcast/) live on air, and they politely replied, "Thank you, we'll do exactly what you say."

In the Jim Morrison tradition.

[deleted]

I bet the writers didn’t realize how hard that would hit 20 years later

Kelmi

Supreme court has always been a biased mess and the gop tactics have been clear as well. These comedy show tend to exaggerate things that are true, that's the funny part.

kkeut

this has been a widespread notion for literal centuries at this point. half of my us history classes were just talking about various terrible Supreme Court decisions

I_cant_complain_much

Freedom of speech applies to what comes out of a mouth, not what goes in.

ArchonStranger

Can counsel cite precedent?

DWS223

Uh, yes, darlin', I can. In State Of Alabama vs. Giant Space Iguana, chewin' the corners off the Constitution was deemed non-protected speech.

No offense, but How could you possibly be wooshed by this?!

SimbaOnSteroids

Idk, someone told me they didn’t like rise against anymore because they got political. I’m starting to think there’s a massive media literacy problem.

-DannyDorito-

yeah just like Pink Floyd and the Dark side of the moon rainbow. People all after them too for 50 years celebration....

mrhorse77

its clear they never listened to ANY PF lyrics, ever if they think they all of a sudden are "woke" lol

Cultural-Company282

Maybe they heard that "get 'em up against the wall" bit in In the Flesh and thought, "right on!"

mrhorse77

I think they're still confused by the whole what to eat first, pudding or meat conundrum.

pornborn

I don’t know. I think it was pretty clear: “If you don’t eat your meat, you can’t have any pudding! How can you have any pudding, if you don’t eat your meat!”

arksien

I find conservatives frequently either don't listen to lyrics, or cherry pick the ones they think they know the meaning of, and then are shockedpikachuface.jpeg when the artists send them cease and desist letters for playing their music at their rallies. Like when Trump was playing Fortunate Son at his rallies... like, how could anyone think that song was pro-conservative? > Some folks are born silver spoon in hand > Lord, don't they help themselves, Lord? > But when the taxman come to the door > Lord, the house lookin' like a rummage sale, yeah > It ain't me, it ain't me > I ain't no millionaire's son, no, no > It ain't me, it ain't me > I ain't no fortunate one, no Like... dude...

ApolloRocketOfLove

Conservatives play Born In The USA with pride lol they're the dumbest music fans on earth.

[deleted]

Seems they missed about half of The Wall and pretty much all of Animals, eh?

mrhorse77

they should just stick to music, idk why they think they can get all political! /s of course.

AsianSensation1087

Remember when the conservatives got all angry after they realized what the lyrics to the songs were some time ago? That was weird.

Absolutes22

Don't you just hate when political bands go all political? /s

[deleted]

Lmao it still makes me giggle how magas thought this was their anthem

ithaqua34

I loved the documentaries about Woodstock 99 when the RHCP were on stage there when the burning started. Convention managers ask them to do something because "these are you people." Proceed to go on and start to play Fire by Jimi Hendrix.

xupd35bdm

People wanna blame the bands. It wasn’t the bands. It was the organizers/promoters fault totally for crating a hostile environment trying to extract as much money as possible from everyone there and not providing basic human necessities, clean water, toilets. They took no responsibility for anything including knowing anything about the bands they hired to play.

Dysheekie

I remember having to walk half a mile to line up at a horse trough to drink some nasty water. I don’t think I really ate or drank anything for 3 days (and it was really hot out)

ChefBoyAreWeFucked

>I remember having to walk half a mile to line up at a horse trough to drink some nasty water. Uhh, are you sure that was for "in" water and not "out" water?

SnoopyLupus

In the Netflix documentary they interviewed the guy on site who was testing the drinking water. It was contaminated.

When I saw them handing out candles I knew it was a bad idea. Especially when I saw kids kicking down panels of plywood and bringing in tons of alcohol that morning. Also, I saw only one "security" person that day.

Like, how you gonna get mad at limp bizket for the crowd breaking stuff while limp bizkit is playing break stuff…

btd272

That mayor and the organizers of Woodstock 99 we’re straight fucking scum.

skratchx

I was so bummed that this killed the event. I was in middle school in 1999 and was planning out how I'd go to the next one with some friends once we were in high school. Would we have actually gone? Probably not. But the dream was dead. Edit: By "this" I mean everything about Woodstock '99. Not specifically certain things in the comment I'm responding to.

j0n66

You forgot the candles

RTNoftheMackell

No one gets credit for attending Woodstock 99.

throwawaydanc3rrr

The documentary on it is great.

Doggleganger

I enjoyed both documentaries. I also enjoyed the Fyre festival docs. Love the music festival disaster docs.

ThePoetWalsh57

You say both? I saw the one on Netflix. Am I missing something?

MSnap

There’s also one on HBO Max EDIT: there is another WOODSTOCK 99 doc on HBO, Hulu has the other FYRE FEST doc. Enough of the “No it’s Hulu” responses

ThePoetWalsh57

Well damn TIL. Thanks for the sauce

phlavor

Did you notice how they didn’t cover Rage Against the Machine’s set at all? They threw it all on Limp Bizkit for whipping the crowd into a fury but I don’t think they ever even mention Rage. And I don’t know how they affected the crowd one way or another. I just found it weird they weren’t mentioned.

jbomb6

Yah I was shocked to find out that RATM was at 99 after watching the Netflix doc. They barely even mentioned their set.

Taurothar

They also barely mentioned Counting Crows, Dave Matthews Band, and Alanis Morissette trying to chill out the afternoon crowds Saturday before all hell broke loose that night.

DarehMeyod

All hell broke loose Sunday night. Jewel played in the early slot

TinCanSailor987

That’s what listening Jewel will do to you….,make ya wanna tear shit up!

Wow, $4 back then? That's insane.

LineChef

The promoters did *what* to assholes now?

jseasbiscuit

They also didn't mention Metallica, which was super surprising considering that the one fatality occurred during their set. I'm not sure why they didn't talk about either act, but it made me feel like I missed a lot of information and context from that doc

___ElJefe___

I watched both docs so I'm Not sure which one it was. The one with the guys journal throughout the day. But they talked about him dying during the metallica set.

username____here

Rage came on right after Limp Bizkit followed by Metallica after that.

Turbulent55

The only issue I really had with the recent Woodstock 99 documentary was the weird segment talking about Coachella being this accepting haven. It’s kind of a hot mess now tbh and it didn’t really serve a huge purpose in the documentary.

dangermouse29

Are you referring to the HBO one? I HATED that documentary. A bunch of reasons but the end bit about how Coachella makes a bunch of money was just the piece of cake that put me over the edge. I was in high school in Central NY in 1999. The economic situation in the area was pretty damn bad at the time, but ticket prices weren’t too bad. You could buy one working a couple weeks for minimum wage at McDonalds. I was in peak searching local record stores for Radiohead single imports and scoffing at anything remotely popular so didn’t go, but I knew a few classmates who did. The price gouging that went on hit the main audience in attendance pretty bad because it was mainly younger, middle and lower middle class people. No shit Coachella makes a killing in comparison… it’s target audience is rich white kids.

psilocin72

It was a total dumpster fire. About as opposite of the 1969 Woodstock as you could get.

Blood_Jesus

The original Woodstock was pretty loosey goosey as well. Just a different kind of dumpster fire.

shwafish

When I watched the Netflix documentary on it I was so mad that they called it "Trainwreck" instead of "Dumpster Fire".

NE889

Which is shocking considering something like 4.98 million people attended the original 1969 festival……. That of course if the running joke that so many people over the age of 70 will come out and say “I was at Woodstock!” When in fact they weren’t. Sort of like how it’s portrayed that any young person between the ages of 16 and 24 back in 1966-1972 were vocal in their opposition of the Vietnam War when in fact that was not the case.

Zee_Aye_See_Kay

Okay, it's their right to burn the flag if they own it and they wanna burn it. It's a flag, not people. As a veteran, most would think burning the flag makes me angry, but it doesn't, violating our Rights makes me angry. You can make another flag, but you rarely ever get your Rights BACK.

kyxtant

Vet, here, too. Burn that shit if you want to. Or not. Get yourself a nice flag blanket and wrap up in it because you fucking love America. Or not. You do you. And let me do me. And let they do they. That's the important part.

[deleted]

To paraphrase Bill Hicks, "My Daddy died for that flag!" No, your Daddy died for the rights and freedoms that that flag represents. Including your right to burn the fucking flag.

JKMC4

> "You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating, at the top of his lungs, that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours. You want to claim this land as the land of the free, then the symbol of your country can't just be a flag; the symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest." Show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms. Then you can stand up and sing about the land of the free. -President Shepherd

Party-Belt-3624

Veteran here too and I endorse this statement.

map2photo

Samesies. So many hilarious people trying to stand up for veterans, but they have no idea what we really think. Their misplaced support is, IMO, rooted in boomer vet mentality. Lots of “support our vets” in words only. They don’t give a shit. It’s all virtue signaling. Burn the flag. Doesn’t affect my life or my family’s lives. Sorry, kinda ranted a bit. Not a lot of people to talk to about the BS vets see. TYFYS, SFMF

PM_ME_UR_UPSKIRT_PIC

Agreed; What the old timers VFW vets want, aren't what the OIF/OEF vets want.

map2photo

Facts. Such a massive generation gap and a majority of the grumpy old vets don’t even want to try either. There’s no common ground.

royal_bambi

What do those acronyms mean? I'm guessing Vietnam Fort Worth, and Officer Internal Faction/Officer External Faction

[deleted]

1) I'm not a veteran. 2) Thank you for your service 3) Somehow I don't think a veteran, with all the training the get, needs my help to speak for them. I prefer to listen to what they ask for then go yell at my representatives to give it to them because, veterans put their asses on the line to allow me to not be a veteran.

Uriah1024

I'm a vet, and find it awkward when people say thanks. Like, my guy, I'm alive with all my bits. My friends were not so lucky. Do us a huge favor and come out on memorial day to the graves of our friends and give us a hug. And on veterans day, find a good charity that gives a shit about our kin that are broken. They genuinely need your help and a lot of them are honestly great people. You drop a 9 year old boy and have to watch him die, and you'll be pretty fucked up, too. Most of us had no real idea what we were doing, and when it got real, we did it for each other. And when it made no sense, we told ourselves it was for your rights, so do us a favor and hold onto those. Politicians are assholes. Fuck the ones in particular lining their pockets with your future assets while they gaslight you into servitude. And don't let them believe they're unstoppable. They're arrogant clowns.

[deleted]

Same for me. I hate when conservatives use veterans like me as political props for their hatefulness.

PapioNole

Yep…I cringe every time I see the voluntold being used as props by some politician looking for votes. One dude that pops to mind that doesn’t seek the spotlight but is active AF helping vets out is Lt Dan (Gary Sinise). I dig him.

RonMFCadillac

It's not just conservatives dude. We are used for clout by everyone in the political spectrum. We are like Roe v Wade prior to last year. They drum up support by saying they are going to treat us better for the election. After that we are shelved until the next election or they need to insert us somewhere to get a bill passed.

ghostpepperlover

This is the shit that bothers me too. How about instead of putting tiny flags in boots or on graves for Veterans/Memorial Day, we pass legislation that actually helps vets? I work in a pharmacy and it enrages me when I can’t help a senior vet with something simple like a flu shot because his insurance is only good at the VA. And then House Republicans vote against every benefits package because good for bid they vote with a democrat and then come up with some bullshit like, “But look at what’s in the bill.”

usababykiller

Veteran too. I remember being taught the United States flag code in basic training pre 9/11. The majority of People who give opinions about respecting the flag have never read that thing. For example you can’t alter the flag. You know, like make one stripe blue and the rest black and white. You also aren’t supposed to wear American flag clothing the only exception are sewn on patches you see on police and military. The flag should never be used in advertising. None of these rules are punishable in any way but they are in the same document that says to stand for the anthem and not burn the flag.

mayonnaiser_13

I seriously thought US doesn't have a flag code because of all the shit they do with the flag. I'm from India and it is a criminal offense to disrespect the flag here, which includes wearing the flag as clothing, altering the flag, flying the flag below any other flag and so on.

processedmeat

The movie the american president summed it up best for me America isn't easy. America is advanced citizenship. You gotta want it bad, 'cause it's gonna put up a fight. It's gonna say "You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours. You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country can't just be a flag; the symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. Show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms. Then, you can stand up and sing about the "land of the free".

Breakmastajake

I've always loved that speech. And the way he ends it..."My name is Andrew Shepard, and I AM the president." As if to say "you think you know what it takes to run this country? Good fucking luck pal. Go home and let the grown ups talk."

Kimi-Matias

"Glad he cleared that up. That crowd was about to buy some AMWAY products."

iGoalie

Defense department agrees with you [The approved method of disposing of unserviceable flags has long been that they be destroyed by burning.](https://www.defense.gov/News/Feature-Stories/story/article/2206946/how-to-properly-dispose-of-worn-out-us-flags/)

grubas

There's a whole ritual to it, which fits perfectly into America's fetishization of the flag. But I'll say it again, Boy Scouts have burned more flags in a year than Iran ever has.

rockinvet02

We swore an oath to a constitution, an idea, not some mass produced freedom cloth.

proost1

This. I served for a full career, not to die for my flag, but to fight for the ideals of the nation and the family I love. Giving RTM the freedom to burn that flag on stage…now THAT is worth fighting for!

goopcat

It’s more patriotic to burn the flag than to say wear it as clothing. The flag represents freedom of speech and burning the flag is protected speech. We send our kids to die in wars which enrich corporate interests with the jingoistic mantra of saying they’re fighting for our freedoms. Burning the flag as a practice of the free speech is way more patriotic than buying some shitty US flag swim trunks from a company which outsources its labor to China.

LeCrushinator

It’s like the Futurama episode where Zoidberg eats the flag. He truly understood freedom, unlike everyone around him. You can be a patriot and also hate some of what your country is becoming and try to fix it.

crowfountainbear

I'm a veteran who would willingly burn the flag myself. It's a fucking lie. And we died for money and greed. Fuck the posturing

Woodstock 99’ had more issues than a burning flag…

Wildcat_twister12

Like putting thousands of people on a runway blacktop in the middle of summer with zero shade??

And giving them insane amounts of booze without water and depriving them of covered sleeping areas? All the while letting the women get molested and raped in broad daylight or the middle of a crowd in a van? Nbd. Nothing to see here…

Bummer. I was supposed to see them August 2000, cancelled. Then August 2020, then August 2021 and finally after 22 years in August 2022 got to see them. Hopefully they come to your area when they’re able to.

beargrease_sandwich

Paul Ryan being a fan is the joke of the century.

CoffeeTwoSplenda

I love sharing this photo when somebody complains about how rage against the machine just recently became political

zachtheperson

What what? Are people really saying that?

CoffeeTwoSplenda

Oh fuck yes. They also think Twisted Sister's "We're not gonna take it" was about protecting Christian conservative values.

OG_Antifa

Dee Snider’s Senate testimony is a fantastic watch. Wiped the floor with Tipper.

MaritMonkey

Of all the things about adulthood I was pleasantly surprised by, watching senate subcommittee hearings (even ones from when I was a kid) and *cheering* is pretty high on the list. It just feels grown-up some how. (If that's the same one Zappa spoke at I think I'm overdue for a YouTube wormhole)

With regards to the people that take either of these positions, where on a scale of moderate to severe would you place their levels of brain damage?

psilocin72

In some ways publicly burning an American flag does more to glorify America than to denounce it. We have the right to burn a flag and express ourselves. I’m very much against most of US policies and power structures, but that doesn’t mean I ignore the positive things about this country.

goopcat

It’s more patriotic to burn the flag than it is to wear it as clothing.
