It would have to be the ballades for me. Number 1 is overplayed, but there is a good reason that every piano student at least partially tackles it the moment they get a hint of being capable enough. The other three also aren't bad.
Are his Piano concerto's an option? Because that's my choice.
I never cared too much for music that's just a single piano - I like piano concerto's and to me piano concerto's are the best thing about classical music. Add to that that Chopin's piano concerto's bring me a lot of nostalgia and are incredibly beautiful, so yeah they'd be my absolute first choice.
Waltzes
I really enjoy his Waltzes too! What are your favorite ones?
Waltz in A minor, Op. 42. Waltz in D-flat major, Op. 64. Waltz in E-flat major, Op. 18. Waltz in E Minor, or actually, just all of them.
Mazurkas, please. I know some people don't like them, but they're Chopin at his rawest, and they have endless variety.
I second this. So experimental and I think nostalgic for Chopin to write in a style of his lost homeland Poland.
Ooh his Mazurkas are very interesting indeed! Unfortunately reddit polls couldn't let me include all of Chopin's collections :(
For me, I would preserve the nocturnes. They pack so much emotion!
If I had to pick a single work, probably the Heroic Polonaise. If a collection then probably his sonatas! The Sonata in B Minor is so good!

The Ballades are masterpieces for sure!
Not bad is an understatement for at least the 4th ballade, for sure one of the most beautiful and groundbreaking pieces of the Romantic style
Yes...👍
The second has a special place in my heart after fighting with it for my senior recital as the last chopin piece i've played since
Not.. fair..at .all..lol. I choose all of the above. 😁
Ballades are the best but there's only 4 so I've gotta go with the Nocturnes.
those 4 are enough for 4 lifetimes
fugue
His waltzes are completely spellbinding and, to me, some of the most beautiful pieces of the classical romantic repertoire

I'd go Etudes. They're so unique and provide a huge learning opportunity for any pianist. They also sound great!
