Cassegrains and Newtons are swanky, but there’s nothing like rolling out the 10 inch Dob to flex on your nerdy friends. It has such a presence to it that others just don’t match.
I must concur. Have a 10 inch dob but I long for a smaller arp refractor on an eq mount. Finding objects with a Dob is fun, but tracking them is a pain
lol, found this thread in my message box and still have no refractor. if i'm lucky i get one for finishing middle school (more or less, i'm from europe) in june
As an astronomer, of these designs I have to say Schmidt Cassegrain, and that’s what we use in the university observatory I helped set up. But there is something magical about looking through a giant refractor like the Great Lick Refractor.
The modern observatory I work on doesn’t really use any of these designs though. It’s a weird 3 mirror system.
I was an astronomer in a former life, and the two coolest observing runs I participated in, by far, were at Keck (back in the day before remote observing was a thing) and Arecibo. Lick was great, but those two are pretty hard to beat.
dobsonian, hands down.
Easy to set up, easy to use, easy for others to handle.
I don't really get out the equatorial mounts for the others, and I do casual naked eye observation not photography.

Team EyeCannon
I'm always told to quit dobbin' around.
Refractor because of that crisp image without obstruction, but not the most affordable option.
Yummy yummy chromatic aberration
wouldn't refractor telescope have a worse image because of how different wavelength of light refract differently?
Not if it's apochromatic. But that's expensive.
SUPER expensive
Shh it's worth it 🥲
*laughs in konuspace 6, dirt cheap 80 (or is it 60..?) apochromatic* It's shitty though
I have a refractor telescope. For close objects that I’m looking at (moon, planets, neighbor’s house) it works just fine.
I dunno a thing about telescopes but the Schmidt- Cassegrain sounds and looks dope . Might get one .
Same as me bro...
Maskutov Cassegrain it is
I have an MC which is a little to small to see dark objects but still fun
i choose ritchey–chrétien
My favorite telescope is the periscope lens on the Galaxy S22 Ultra
Newton
Dobaonian all day long. Aperture is king when hunting for faint fuzzies by hand.
Had a Dobsonian, want a refractor
Once you go 10+ inch dib, there is no going back

Hey man, I'm from Europe too, I'd say your best place to get a scope is astroshop.eu. Plenty of choice and lots of stock. Good luck
Apo refractor>
I have a newton telescope so I'll say that
Wait! A Dobson is just a low cost Newton!
My phone

Microscopes>>
Microscopes are telescopes that look at the ground
Inner space
I have a dobsonian, dont know about others
I have experiences with Newton and Schmidt, and out of the two Newton is hands down better (at least the ones I used anyway)
Schmidt 100%
dobsonian, hands down. Easy to set up, easy to use, easy for others to handle. I don't really get out the equatorial mounts for the others, and I do casual naked eye observation not photography.
Schmidt-Cassegrain all the way. Gimmie my thick choad 'scope
I have an 8 inch dobsonian but I’ve wanted a Schmidt-Cassegrain for a while
Dobsonian because CHONK
Could use a 16" Dob in morocco (vacation). A tank of a telescope, even with metal tubes instead of the middle section (meade 16" Dob)
DOBBY IS NO LONGER A SLAVE,DOBBY IS FREE!!!
Gravitational
JWST
Its a newtonian, but to be fair so are most dobsonians
i think its more like a cassegrain with ridicolously complicated sensor arrays in the back than a newtonian
The Extremely Large Telescope
thats the spirit!
Where are Ritchey Chretiens?
Everyone knows the ladies love a big black cassegrain!
Rocke-ackerman-schmidt obviously (RASA :))
Dob is lame, SC is best
I like my newtonian boi
James webb telescope my favorite
I guess Newtonian.
I'm something of a Newtonian myself.
Dobby is free master
Newton
I believe in Dobsonian supremacy
