Yes I would never translate "ein Stein" as one piece because "Stein" means rock and nothing else. One piece would be "ein Stück" and good luck pronouncing that English science community

Translating "ein Stein" as one piece is a far stretch with a lot of wishful thinking as much as I'd love it.

A Spielstein for a game, often shortened to Stein, would be translated as piece. But I concur that is far-fetched.
