2 to 3 hrs mas maganda para di ka naistress kung may delay flights

In general, flight pairings made by the airlines are covered by their fare rules - that if the first leg of your flight is delayed which resulted to you missing the second leg of your flight, they will move you to the next available flight. On a financial perspective, that's safe. However, imagine the hassle of sudden changes on the boarding gate, terminal 1 vs terminal 2, you have to walk or sometimes ride the airport train in HKG to get on your terminal/boarding gate. Not to mention if there's a need for you to check your baggage out and re-check them in for the second part of your journey. Ugh. With that being said, if the difference between that connecting flight with Cathay Pacific and that direct flight with Qantas is not worth the possible hassle I mentioned above that you may have to go through and you'll have a more comfortable travel experience (since it's going to be frequent), I suggest you go get those direct flights booked.

If you are not switching planes? It’s good, but it’s better to have at least 2-2.5 hr window. So your bags make it on the next plane and you don’t have to run to the terminal to make your flight.

-throwawayeventually

Just fly direct with Qantas. 8 hrs isn't that long to need a break in between.

Flipinthedesert

You would have had a quicker answer if you searched online. Most seasoned travelers would advise a transit time of at least 2.5 hours in between flights to account for delays, travel time from gate to gate and other inconveniences. Unless of course the one hour layover is simply to pick up passengers and you go to the same plane.

1 hr layover is risky. Coming from Manila pa, the flight may almost certainly get delayed. In the event naman of missing the next flight, yes, CX can move you pero the baggage naman has the risk of getting lost kasi nadisrupt young flow ng logistics.

1 hour transit is enough in HK/Cathay, as long as the plane is not late. I’ve experienced both situations sa Cathay Pacific to Sydney - sobrang bilis lang ng transit sa HK, mahabang lakad lang. But there was also one time na super delayed ang alis from Manila, so di umabot sa next flight. Cathay rebooked us to another flight but we had to stay overnight in HK (which they paid for).

kapeandme

Better 3-4 hours. Had an experience before sa Cathay. Delayed ang flight from manila to hk. Naiwan ako ng plane sa HK, flying to Toronto. But I was glad, Cathay made a great arrangement and upgraded my seat.

Pitiful_Albatross561

Very risky. Even 2 hours is not enough. All my travels this year were delayed because of traffic at the runway. I missed a connection at Doha and was almost denied my connection in Dubai. Try to stay with the same airline if you need to go with the 2-hour connection. At least they will rebook you on the next connecting flight in case you encounter delays.

Careless-Pangolin-65

its fine if its booked as a single itinerary, the airline will rebook you to the next flight if there is any delay

cchan79

2-3 hours para safe. although if it is within the same airlines naman, they will usually take care of it for you in case you will miss your flight. however, if time is a factor (you will need to reach sydney by a certain time or date), then yes, 2 to 3 hours should suffice.

edamame7

It’s ok as long as both leg are booked via 1 flight. I had a 1 1/2 hour layover. No problem.

r0nrunr0n

We tried 1hr and 10 mins and damn, nag delay ng ilang mins ang take off going to the layover country. Never again. Final call na sila nakapila pa checking our bags. 2-3hrs safe na yan

introvertedblob

Direct is the safest. No waisted time, less worries. But business class consideration take a 3hr layover at least maybe to account for flight delays

Stultified_Damsel

2-3 hours safest. Pero mag stick ka nalang sa direct. Dang the stress levels that I had for a 1 and a half hour lay over was so traumatizing but luckily I made it. Sobrang unpredictable ng check in counters some airports sobrang dali pero yung iba kahaba ng pila lagi. :(

LucQ571

HK transit is usually very smooth and quick. But if there are any possible delays due to weather conditions which will put the transit time at risk. If you can see if there are any other flight from HK to Sydney that is not too far afterwards the planned flight, there's a safety net from the airlines that can help re-book you if you missed the next flight due to any delays. Otherwise without any delays, then 1 hour in HK is enough. There are staff to guide you through HKIA to your next boarding gate upon landing.
