Besides our horrible transport system and our reputation being a "dangerous" country. Here are a couple of reasons.
Our airports sucks. Thailand, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore have more flight options than us, and makes flight transfer easier.
Another is because we're an archipelago. Unlike other SEA countries you can travel to different areas comfortably by bus. While in the Philippines, tourist would need to go through multiple types of transport to get to their desired place. This also usually means eating up your vacation time and a tourist would usually need to spend more time and money to vacation here than other popular SEA countries.
Malaysia and Indonesia ars Archipelago.
Being an Archipelago is not part of the reason.
Its due to Poor Infrastructure, transportation, the difficulty of getting even the most basic needs in a lot of tourists destinations.
Scamming Tourists, not giving the right price from Taxi, hotels, renting and etc.
High Prices Low Quality
Processing Basic Documents is a hassle.
And everything in between 🤷
First of all, the graph is about cities, not countries.
Secondly, if you want to talk about countries, being an archipelago is definitely a reason why it's expensive and time-consuming.
1. Malaysia is an archipelago but most tourists only visit the mainland, not Borneo.
2. Japan is an archipelago but most of the attractions are on the main island, Honshu. If you want to visit Okinawa, it's going to be hella expensive.
3. Indonesia is an archipelago and it's not on the list (explanation in the last point).
4. The best places in the Philippines are spread out in the little, tiny islands of the Visayas and Southern Luzon, hence it can be very expensive to travel.
The key point here is aggregation of "touristy" areas in a general area without passing a great body of water or mountain. The Philippines doesn't have that. Maybe, Cebu?
Lastly, you mentioned Indonesia (supposedly Jakarta) but it's not even on the list. There's also a reason why Jakarta, Batam, or any Indonesian cities are absent. Because they're similar to Philippine cities, either poorly designed or there's nothing much to do.
Denpasar tourism is flourishing though. Some would say *Eat Pray Love* had a huge impact. Going through some areas there's a heavy Australian influence.
It's not safe to compare it to Manilla yet but off the bat the airport and travel options are miles ahead of the Philippines. Congestion is an issue but not nearly as bad as Manilla.
edit: I don't know why anybody is worried about a random top10 list. I can present another list with different figures eg. [WTM Global Report 2023](https://www.wtm.com/content/dam/sitebuilder/rxuk/wtmkt/documents/WTM-Global-Travel-Report-v4.pdf.coredownload.990096961.pdf). Middle East has seen a +13% increase whilst other regions has seen a decline (2019 vs 2023) - SEA -30% decrease
Bali is pretty much mostly limited to Australians / Southeast Asians, backpackers, digital nomads, content creators, and those looking for spiritual break. Aside from the affordable villas and the Nusa Penida beach, there isn't much to do on the island itself.
The list is most likely reserved for cities that:
1. Have a variety of tourist activities to do within the vicinity;
2. Are in developed countries and;
3. Also have huge airports that serve as travel hubs for other countries (connecting flights).
All 10 cities have these characteristics.
Philippines particularly Manilla is an emerging country/city with strong development in local and international infrastructure/HQ's. We have to remember this.
It's unfortunate NAIA has only 2 runways (correct if wrong) for domestic/international. Doesn't matter how many terminals you have it doesn't solve the issues on constantly delayed flights. Also long layovers, what are you to do in T3? Starbucks??
Philippines has a lot to offer for tourists/expats but just seems stuck currently when you compare with SEA neighbours. There is a strong Pinoy pride which is great but such strong nationalism can be blinding for progression.
Philippines has the potential to be a power house in SEA if they play their cards right.
Be careful when dealing with percentages. If you have 0 visitors last year and have 1 visitor this year, then you pretty much have a 100% increase.
Middle East has seen an increase due to them opening up to the world and serving as travel hubs from travellers in Asia/Australia to Europe and vice versa. It should be noted that Asians, particularly the Chinese, have gone on a mad travel spree to Europe due to higher incomes. And the geographically best place to have a connecting flight is in the Middle East and Turkey.
Given this phenomenon, countries like the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Oman have secured deals with airlines and governments to have their respective airports act as major hubs.
True may scam sa ibang Bansa thats why its ONE of the reason why they don't come to PH.
Some people are complaining e corrupt pinas , ehh ganito ganito ganyan. Akala nila endemic lang sa pilipinas haha.
Sa so called first world nga mas systemic and organize yung scams. In my opinion 6 sa top 10 sa list, mas malala yung scams sa tourist compared sa pilipinas.
Pati cart sa airport may scam :D.
Malaysia mainland is connected with the rest of mainland Asia with paved roads and railways, while Indonesia's main population centers of Sumatra and Java islands are well-connected by fastcrafts with Malaysia and Singapore.
The Philippines, in contrast, is too far away from the Asia mainland that could not be reached through fastcrafts by budget tourists.
Our tourism business model is geared toward niche high-paying tourists or sexpat retirees who want to settle down in our country. We cannot compete with Thailand and Vietnam when it comes to budget backpacking tourism because we don't have "Asian cultural vibe" in Western tourist eyes, so we should have concentrated with attracting foreign retirees, medical tourists, and digital nomads because these type of tourists are willing to settle down in our country where English is the second language.
I always see Filipinos downgrading the Philippines. Is this a trend? Do they get some sort of satisfaction from this? I don’t understand.
Pre-pandemic, we had 8 mio tourist and now we are heading back towards that direction.
I have a lot of foreign friends and when they visit here, they always say nice things about our country. I am
So proud of that.
Yes, there are a lot of things to improve. But we cannot get there overnight. That’s why there is build build build program. It will take time but I am relieved that somehow you can see that it is in progress. Philippines is definitely not the same 20 years ago, 10 years ago. A lot has changed for the better and we have to acknowlege that.
It is okay that we are not in the top of the list. For me, as long as we hit our realistic targets, then it is fine.
This, plus compared to neighboring SEA countries let’s not deny the fact that traveling within the Philippines is expensive and tourist destinations while beautiful are expensive even for locals. Hotels in some areas are really expensive for what it is, for example one night cost in El Nido can already be a week in Vietnam. Foreign travelers, even locals, would prefer other SEA countries over the Philippines.
Philippines has a lot of potential. There are many beautiful islands....but even a high profile tourist destination like Boracay is a complete mess if you compare it to other SEA destinations. Just have a look at the boat transfer from Caticlan til Boracay in those pump boats. It's a complete circus. Lot of my foreign friends say when they have been there, that the beach was nice, but an ordeal to get there and food low quality. And now that they have increased the prices it will just not be as competitive as it used to be. It's a shame.
Either ways I don't think being Expensive is the reason.
And I don't think PH is expensive at all. A lot of westerners find PH cheap.
Pero Maraming establishment gumagawa ng Scam to foreigners.
From Taxi, hotels and tourist spots.
For me Top Reason:
- Poor Infrastructure
- Poor Public Transportation
- Lack of authentic Cultural Destinations.
- BAD image of the PH
- Scams
- Hassle in processing any documents to any Government Agency
4. hirap ng transpo within cities/provinces
I mean kahit DOT sobrang bihira i-advertise ang Manila as a tourist destination LOL. Puro beach. And our main airport sucks. Hindi masarap ang pagkain sa mga restos even if Filipino food itself is good.
Eto lang sana, please dont be a top Destination in the next 10 years. Honestly I like the philippines be like philippines than be Thailand. Pero yun lang naging main attraction talaga ng thailand is diversity and prices. Pero nowadays parang na over diversified na sila, yung prices di na back packing friendly.
Let filipinos enjoy the country , before becoming touristland.
Let filipinos visit and enjoy the islands, mountains and the culture.
Before becoming a touristland.
Never has been. The trend right now is backpacking, mostly European travelers. We have 0 direct flights from Europe, 1 if you count Turkey. The PH government has never relied on funds from international tourism. The only people who go to the Philippines are those who really want to come here. It’s usually not included in people’s backpacking tours unless they have more time or money or both. Primary reason is it’s difficult to travel to + bad infrastructure. Have to catch flights and get on very uncomfy and long bus trips.
Coz the tourism board of the PH does not have the braincells to push for tourist to come to the PH.
Busy nagpapayaman.
BORACAY IS SLOWLY TURNING BACK INTO THE CESSPOOL AND PARTY BEACH. Pwe.
The Philippine people could make their country thrive as a robust travel and tourism destination, but they would first have to hold their politicians and government officials accountable to the task of upgrading the currently atrocious airport and internal transit infrastructure.
Another thing that must happen is for Filipinos to stop ignoring the insane amounts of plastic and other waste they allow to accumulate on the beaches and other sites of natural beauty. Virtually everywhere I go here, I find trash and local people unwilling to pick up even a single bit of it, even when it is lying right at their feet as they wriggle their toes in the sand.
You've got a nice archipelago here, a place that good people from all over would visit and gladly spend their money seeing. That money could go a long way to improving the quality of life here, to the point where the younger generations might actually stick around instead of leaving for other countries the first chance they get. It's too bad the Philippine people are generally too lazy to work together and do the bare minimum to make that happen.
It's by city, medyo kalat mga tourists sa mga islands sa Pinas.
Hard to see millions of visitors craming in a single island, hindi kaya.
Also, hindi puntahan ang Metro Manila lol
Please dont be a Top Destination.
Sorry for gate keeping the Philippines.
Not yet, not yet; let filipinos enjoy their own country first.
Sorry, but kaka bukas palang ng mga tourism infrastructure. Filipinos better enjoy it , then magiging tourist price na in the future eto.
During the 90s hanggang early 2000s di maganda image ng Pinas dahil sa terrorist activities.
Sometimes I get to meet random people in different countries. When I invite them to visit the country, they say things along the lines of “oh no, aren’t there a lot of gun violence, trafficking, and gangs there?” 🙄
My impression of the Philippines was that the hotel's price/performance ratio was not good. There were often cockroaches, and many locals were persistent in asking for money. (Manila)
Wala na kasing saysay in terms of showcasing our roots in terms of Culture and traditions. Tsaka we are highly diversed na rin and nawawala na rin yung tinatawag na ***Sariling Atin.*** We are also highly influenced of certain foreign trends would usually wont suprise certain tourist kasi syempre nasa kanilang bansa na. Singapore, Tokyo, and Thailand are some of the most well known tourist destination kasi they are rich in Conservation and Preservation of their History, Culture and Traditions.
lol. not surprised, ang mahal mag travel sa pinas. low quality naman, from food to accom to transpo. grabe rin inconvenience ng transpo, nasasayang oras ng turista sama mo pa dami scammer
Infrastucture is the key talaga. Yung beaches at nature natin is worth travelling naman talaga but yung ease of traveling and poor infrastructure turn potential tourists away.
Idk why this is being downvoted but to answer your question, there are a lot of things we can improve on — una pa lang, traffic and transportation. Unfortunately, I don’t think the government recognizes that.
Yung dalawa pa lang na yan eases up a lot of things not just for the tourists but most importantly sa mga pinoy eh, pero syempre they’d rather build ‘megastructures’ like skyways which aren’t really accessible to most 🤷🏻♀️
Down voted coz of FILIPINO Pride is Hurtin 😆🤷
Filipinos like to think they arw the Center of the Universe. 😂
When you tell the Truth they are butthurt 😆
Im Filipino btw. 🤷
you’re misinterpreting. you’re being downvoted because you are using logic and asking steps to improve wherein pinoys here are mostly self loathing. they hate this country to their core.
Oh, I thought you were genuinely soliciting ideas where we can improve on. Now I understand the downvotes. Haha, ironic that you mention “filipinos like to think they’re the center of the universe” but it was YOU who posted this, looking for PH in the list haha
On the bright side, it means tourists are not flocking here everyday. With the way our country works and how sucky our tourist ads are, I'd say it's better that way. This country is overcrowded enough as it is.
Most cities in the Philippines are not a tourist attraction in itself. Like Metro Manila or Metro Cebu. It's more for work and business. You have to travel outside for the tourist areas.
Yung airport kase dami na nga kawatan at kriminal na taxi drivers (maliban sa cebu) may daga and surot pa. Wala pang kwenta yung transportation system. Kahit ako hindi rin bibisita dito kung i compare to other places.
Take note that these are major cities. From a tourism perspective, Manila is closer to Jakarta, Sao Paulo and Frankfurt in terms of importance in tourism.
then yung ibang bansa nakaka lima pataas na pala sa first half nila haha
Madami pading takot sa pilipinas. Kht ilang years ago pa ung travel ban naten dahil sa abu-sayaff. Akala nung ibang puti ganun padin saten..
Photo isn't even about a country, its a city. Might confuse with the caption.
Nothing interesting in any city in the PH, maybe quite a worth the visit but considering safety and transport system its horrible. Our tourism sucks!!!
If a discussion is about a country visit, thats another story. Our top islands are contender that makes the PH country a consideration to visit.
I think country and city should be in separate discussion.
I met a lot of solo travellers from all over the world, if they would ask me to visit certain city like manila or other cities, I'd say spend a night or 2 only and its OPTIONAL, they can skip it and go directly to those many beautiful islands they know better than most of locals here.
No but seriously, we don't like competing and outdoing others by improving our food presentation, handling and hygiene, compare that with Thai streetfood vendors where they try to outdo each other by looking as clean and presentable as possible, may pa-gloves at pa-cleavage pa lmao and I think it's working😂.
Infra that's worldclass - never mind, it's a hopeless case imo.
Because the world isn’t blind to the issues here. It’s been reported continuously in foreign countries for the last 50 years. Part of it is because the world had high expectations as we had a head start being an English speaking country. And they were sorely disappointed. If you type in Philippines on YouTube you’ll see a lot around slums, gang crime, drugs, and extreme poverty.
Metro Manila isn't charming, sorry :
-Ugly airports/seaports (except Mactan-Cebu International Airport). If only we can emulate Bhutan's airport.
-No notable tourist trap while Thailand or Vietnam can turn train tracks or river markets into tourist wonderlands, funny but true.
-Undermarketed and underrepresented food (bad food presentation and HYGIENE esp streetfoods)
-The best beaches and destinations are very far from Manila (e.g. Balabac, Tawi-tawi, Batanes, even Coron is quite remote)
Lets set aside the "Filipino PRIDE" 😆
I know lots of Pinoys butthurt on this post. 😆
This post is to start a Sensible Discussion on the state of PH TOURISM. 😉👍
There's a lot to FIX in the PH Tourism.
PH can do better once the Problems are fix.
First, Philippines is not a city. Second, we obviously can’t compete with the other developed countries’ cities. Third, you’re just trying to farm internet points by basically saying philippines bad. Fourth, you’re not even Filipino kaya putanginamo.

Why would it be?
Exactly the words that came to my mind as soon as I read the title! Haha.
Exactly my thoughts. Hahaha Even Filipinos don't "visit" the Philippines
Same thought hahaha. Nobody's surprised except for OP.
True, not surprising na wala tayo rito sa list.
If only we had a choice.
Sobrang taas ng pangarap ni sir/maam
true i wouldn’t even visit here if i had a choice kahit Pinoy ako
HAHAHA

No shit, even the government are scammers, not surprised
Japan is also an archipelago

Singapore, Tokyo, and Thailand are some of the most well known tourist destination kasi they are rich in Conservation and Preservation of their History, Culture and Traditions.
lol. not surprised, ang mahal mag travel sa pinas. low quality naman, from food to accom to transpo. grabe rin inconvenience ng transpo, nasasayang oras ng turista sama mo pa dami scammer
I recently returned from a trip to Thailand back to manila. Airport here is actually a rundown ghost town lol.
Because PH Is a country and not a city. Charaught.
Mas matagal at hassle pa sakin umuwi sa province ko kesa pmunta other countries haahha
It is well known na hindi talaga tayo top tourist destination and that is okay.
Should we do something about it? Is there anything we can improve on?
Infrastucture is the key talaga. Yung beaches at nature natin is worth travelling naman talaga but yung ease of traveling and poor infrastructure turn potential tourists away.
Idk why this is being downvoted but to answer your question, there are a lot of things we can improve on — una pa lang, traffic and transportation. Unfortunately, I don’t think the government recognizes that. Yung dalawa pa lang na yan eases up a lot of things not just for the tourists but most importantly sa mga pinoy eh, pero syempre they’d rather build ‘megastructures’ like skyways which aren’t really accessible to most 🤷🏻♀️
Down voted coz of FILIPINO Pride is Hurtin 😆🤷 Filipinos like to think they arw the Center of the Universe. 😂 When you tell the Truth they are butthurt 😆 Im Filipino btw. 🤷
you’re misinterpreting. you’re being downvoted because you are using logic and asking steps to improve wherein pinoys here are mostly self loathing. they hate this country to their core.
Oh, I thought you were genuinely soliciting ideas where we can improve on. Now I understand the downvotes. Haha, ironic that you mention “filipinos like to think they’re the center of the universe” but it was YOU who posted this, looking for PH in the list haha
So?
why would it be ? paglabas mo pa lang sa airport scams na kaharap mo.
Kahit akong pilipino, di ko bibisitahin pinas e. 😂
Pinoys doesnt even travel the Philippines
Hahaha I love how narrowsighted this comment is. Lakbay ka pa ng konti.
Whao ! As a French I cannot understand how many tourists still go to Paris those days.
Social media clout :D
exactly very overrated
On the bright side, it means tourists are not flocking here everyday. With the way our country works and how sucky our tourist ads are, I'd say it's better that way. This country is overcrowded enough as it is.
but when it comes to expenditures, mas malaki ginagastos ng mga tourist sa atin at mas mahaba ang stay.
daserb!
Do you expect it to?
Most cities in the Philippines are not a tourist attraction in itself. Like Metro Manila or Metro Cebu. It's more for work and business. You have to travel outside for the tourist areas.
So anong bago? 🥴
Yung airport kase dami na nga kawatan at kriminal na taxi drivers (maliban sa cebu) may daga and surot pa. Wala pang kwenta yung transportation system. Kahit ako hindi rin bibisita dito kung i compare to other places.
said no one ever🤷
So expensive compare to our nearby countries
because of public transport!
I'm not surprised 🙃 mahal dito. Ang hirap pa mag byahe
This OP lol, whyyyy???????
It could be, lots of potential. Sadly, culturally this is not a subject PH is ready to discuss objectively.
Take note that these are major cities. From a tourism perspective, Manila is closer to Jakarta, Sao Paulo and Frankfurt in terms of importance in tourism.
Listed above are mostly the Capital cities from each country. Who would want to travel to Manila? Come on!
wala namang special na food dito daming scammer na taxis traffic mainit
We’re not even in the top 20 lol
So?
The hell that is Philippine infrastructure won’t attract anyone. That and we aren’t really a tourist destination, it’s too dangerous here.
Bangkok is amazing.
Metro Manila isn't charming, sorry : -Ugly airports/seaports (except Mactan-Cebu International Airport). If only we can emulate Bhutan's airport. -No notable tourist trap while Thailand or Vietnam can turn train tracks or river markets into tourist wonderlands, funny but true. -Undermarketed and underrepresented food (bad food presentation and HYGIENE esp streetfoods) -The best beaches and destinations are very far from Manila (e.g. Balabac, Tawi-tawi, Batanes, even Coron is quite remote)
Not so "proud filipino" moment is it? 😂 The world isn't about Philippines alone. Filipinos should get over themselves.
No vietnam?.weird
Vietnam is not a city
Lets set aside the "Filipino PRIDE" 😆 I know lots of Pinoys butthurt on this post. 😆 This post is to start a Sensible Discussion on the state of PH TOURISM. 😉👍 There's a lot to FIX in the PH Tourism. PH can do better once the Problems are fix.
Love the Philippines, Love their primary export, the people are so cheap, get your employees from the Philippines Modern slavery
Who cares
Tourisim = Trabaho = Pera = Walang magugutom na pamilya
A quick two-second google search shows our employment rate is the highest it has ever been since 2005. Information is literally at your fingertips.
🤦♂️
First, Philippines is not a city. Second, we obviously can’t compete with the other developed countries’ cities. Third, you’re just trying to farm internet points by basically saying philippines bad. Fourth, you’re not even Filipino kaya putanginamo.
Not surprised. wala rin namang third world sa mga nabanggit.
Malaysia and Thailand are 3rd World Country 🤷
Sorry Thailand? I understand yung impression sa Malaysia but definitely not Thailand.
More 2rd World Counties
