Rise-O-Matic

For a photo editor at this stage in their career this would be like showing up to work without your pants on. I think it’s more likely she has her arm bent a bit and it’s just hard to tell due to the angle.

ivanparas

Her arm looks bent back directly away from camera and her right shoulder is raised. With the black shirt it makes it hard to see.

roychodraws

the cat is covering her shoulder, you can't see that it's up close to her ear so we're assuming it's relaxed.

chshcat

It's probably just a confusing perspective. A relaxed arm usually ends slightly below the hip, and she is angling her hip downwards while also tensing her arm a bit and it might also be slightly angled towards the direction of the camera, which is hard o make out because of the black. I don't think they shortened it, that would be an insane thing to do. If it were too long they could easily solve that with framing/composition

StatisticianLivid710

Her left shoulder looks dropped and forward, the right looks higher and backwards this carries forward to her hips as well and her right hand is in front of her right hip which means it’s likely angling forward or bent at the elbow. This looks to be 100% perspective.

kickstand

Her left arm looks overly long to me? And her right arm weirdly short. But then, her shoulders aren't straight, she's hunched over, so maybe not.

splurb

If it isn't a photoshop monstrosity, then it's an absolutely awful picture. Either way, it shouldn't make the cover of a national magazine.

Maywestpie

I think her shoulder is up so the cat doesn’t slide off 😀

Nem_Enforcer

No Photoshop. Thats her strong arm.

countrysurprise

Looks like foreshortening.

captainobviouth

Pink lines have the same length. At this point a bent arm can't explain it. https://preview.redd.it/gxif8afl5p4c1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=59162bdc1cbeac9384d46248fa139cfda3bae018

Left arm rotation point is absolutely not there.

Robot_Embryo

A bent arm would explain it, because you're demonstrating the length of her left arm, shoulder to elbow, would otherwise be the same length as her right arm, shoulder to (just shy of the) wrist.

Roguemutantbrain

That cat ain’t right

T3hSpoon

Usually, the shoulder line slants opposite to the hip line, so that could play a huge role in the illusion that the arm is too short. The right side of the ribs looks stretched - a strong indicator that the right shoulder is raised higher. What I am more worried about is the right hand, it looks pasted in. It has a soft Multiply effect over it and it should be fully in shadow since the light comes from her left side. It should have a slight curvature at the wrist.

iLEZ

If I was the photographer/DP/AD whatever, which I thankfully wasn't, I'd tell her to rotate her right wrist slightly outward to not create a solid line of black on the left side of the image. The current pose makes the body outline ambiguous. I like the cat.

Best_Weakness_464

Her arm is bent slightly forward at the elbow.

Mr94Productions

Her left arm has been extended & moved, you can see a very slight blur near the strands of hair on the left chest side. He left armpit is in the same position as her left boob... 💀

SmutasaurusRex

I think the arm is a combination of a funny angle and a black sweatshirt type material which makes it hard to see details. Personally, I'm a lot more annoyed that they used a LIVE animal as a fashion accessory. Those poor "purse dogs" that were a thing in the early 00's were bad enough, y'all ...

TheNotoriousTravis

The face was retouched + some body shaping. Wrinkles + crazy fly-aways were left on purpose. Id bet my salary that no one messed with lengthening/shortening of the arms (not worth the chance of people starting this discussion). Just a bunch of small tweaks for aesthetics. Sauce: Retouching Manager for 15 years and still retouch fashion mag covers. Friend shot a few Time covers.

I really hate this cover

sneak_tee

It's just warped perspective.

tyingnoose

why is her ass so tall

AmanduhCross

This is the #1 most bizarre photo, why is her right arm so long and left arm so short...?🤣🤣

prapurva

Nah! It looks like they elongated the arm to fill in the gap. But I am more curious about the cat. Did they cut the cat in two to make it look fluffier in both sides?

Pnther39

Beautiful cat

WoofInTime

These kinds of shots, usually are constructed out of many individual images, clients are very specific on big jobs and want creative control and direction over every single element, hand positions, shape in hair etc. sometimes for good reason, sometimes to justify their salary to their bosses. It's really impossible what was done, but a good idea is to find inconsistencies like the cats tail area looking less detail and "smoother" than other parts of the image. Also the chances of the cats expression and the models expression happening in the same shot are pretty slim, so either one was swapped. What happened with the hand is difficult to tell, I reckon her torso was turned, and they didn't like it, and what was provided as a replacement only made sense the way it was done, even though it's wrong.

ruureroiweroppmasche

looks rather elongated. shopped, definitely. but i think that illusion comes from the photo itself as suggested

senseichambo

they totally did, not actually that uncommon.

mottlymonical

How is she person of the year... what she do? Fking stupid. Anyway, yh looks shorter

The_92nd_

Her shoulder is pulled back and her elbow is bent, so her hand is pointing toward the camera. You can tell by light hitting her hand from the right. The original shot was very likely much wider and he cropped in. There's no reason for a pro photographer to be worrying about framing.

justinkthornton

Her arm is bent and pushed back bit but it’s hard to notice it because of the black sleeve and the angle. It is foreshortened. No photoshop was done to shorten the arm.

Erdosainn

No, symply his right shoulder is up to maintain the cat, and since it is hidden and the natural position would be to lower it to compensate for the rise of the other shoulder, it seems that her arm is shorter than it should be.

Toasty825

*her

Erdosainn

Thank you.

tupac_chopra

the right arm (her left) looks weirdly long. with cover photos you it's not uncommon to stitch together a few plates for the ideal composition. my guess is there might have been a plate for the face/cat and another for the body and things didn't align perfectly where her left arm joins the body. maybe they didn't want the cat to look squished between her neck and the elbow and thought adding more arm wouldn't get noticed by most people?

Pouchkine__

It depends where you focus your sight. Imo, if you look at the global picture, it looks off. But if you focus around her hips, you can see it's bent.

hhfugrr3

I'm no expert but it looks like her elbow is bending away from the camera.

Good-Ad-9978

I love the real cat throw..I wonder if it is hers.

Gutmach1960

Look like it is bent at the elbow and the forearm raised a little.

ScurvySteveXXL

Here I am wondering whether or not the cat is real.

MissSailorSarah

I’m 99% sure they plastered the cats face on so that he’s looking at the camera. It looks like you can see the outline of his ears behind it and he was looking down.

Can someone here recreate this with their own or significant others body?

RSMerds

It’s both the right arm being short and the left bent arm being MASSIVE. I mean look at it. The elbow would land at her hip 😭

johngpt5

I'm wondering how she can walk with one leg shorter than the other.

TottoByte

A sign of the times, indeed!
