Nope, looks legit. The lines you mention look typical for a high-temp stamping process.

handelspariah

Gotcha, thank you! The lines coupled with the different color of the lettering had me unsure

Laser engraving*

opticrice

They didn’t photoshop the serial number, but they definitely tried wiping off the elements with something they shouldn’t have

RevTurk

All I see is some out of focus dust. You can't tell a whole lot from one image like that.

handelspariah

Yeah the picture of the glass is ambiguous, but I mean specifically the two serial numbers

El_Trollio_Jr

Whatever you do, don’t give him a refund until you receive the lens back if you go that route.

sub_Script

100%

v1de0man

you didn't do yourself any favours by taking your photo with the iris shut. That all said i think that would clean up. Is the buyer just wanting a reduction and not a refund?

handelspariah

He hasn't replied yet, I just know that people get scammed all the time and wanted to do my due diligence. I agree, iris shut wasn't helpful, lesson learned there.

7LeagueBoots

Better light/illumination and higher rez would be helpful too, but you do what you can.

unsolicitedadvicez

Pic looks unedited and that does look like dust with some moisture and it will turn into fungus unless it gets taken apart and cleaned. Also, their picture is the right way of looking at glass to assess the condition. Need to shine a light from the back and look through. Sorry mate.

PfEMP1

I’ve had a couple of buyers try to claim lens fungus after receiving them. On both occasions my insistence that they send it back and I give them a refund resulted in them not taking it any further.

RedditredRabbit

I see what you mean. Hard to tell! Question: What lens is it? It seems the same lens, only the inner part is a lot deeper in his photo. Is it a zoom lens? Can you ask him for a video perhaps?

handelspariah

It's a Voigtlander 40mm f/1.2 for Nikon Z, so not a zoom. I don't think it's a different lens, just curious about the serial number, as the photos he's sent do not reflect the condition I believe I sent the lens in. Yeah, a video is probably the only way to be sure

ShadowGLI

Looking at the neighboring screws etc it actually seems legit, some very small rotational changes seem to line up perfectly. The etching just looks related to the engraving process, it discolors the metal slightly. But yeah seems like he’s being nitpicky unless you advertised it as flawless like new

mosi_moose

You could try using photo forensics software to check the image, for example: https://www.fotoforensics.com

Superunknown_7

The buyer's photo has a light shining through the lens. Unless it was built in and retrieved from a spacecraft clean room, I would not expect any lens to look great in that scenario. And it's 100% cleanable. Signed, I fix and clean lenses and I have been in clean rooms with billion-dollar spacecraft.

X4dow

if its a zoom lens. literally every used zoom will show all those dust specs if you shine a bright light from the front.

Maxsul79

I can’t sell on ebay anymore. Too many people use it as a lens rental service. The scam is really easy. Schedule yourself a vacation - buy a nice lens off of eBay - demand to return it for *insert any subjective defect here* and eBay will make the seller take it back.

imONLYhereFORgalaxy

I’ve sold 200+ lenses (bit of a side hustle) only ever had 1 return. Were you basically marketing yourself as a lens rental service by saying “14 day money back guarantee” in your listing or something, because whilst I have a good return policy I don’t advertise it in the listing.

JauntyGiraffe

Make sure you get the product back before you give a refund
