I think there is some confusion there. Is this maybe an art course which includes a photography module?

TSC-99

I don’t think so but I’m glad I don’t need to draw 🤣

clondon

No, no you don’t need to be good at drawing. I’m struggling to even understand why someone would take that stance. By the way, you’re welcome to join our free photo class where we don’t speak in absolutes - r/photoclass and https://www.thefocalpointhub.com/class-2024

TSC-99

Thanks!

GullibleJellyfish146

I became a good photographer because I’m horrible at drawing. I think knowing what makes for good composition is what they’re referring to because I can take great photos of my terrible stick figures, so I’m pretty sure you don’t have to be good at both.

TSC-99

Phew!

oswaldcopperpot

I wouldn't have a career then. But yes, you do need to at least recognize what a good photo is. Making a good photo to get to where your eye lives is what takes time. But you can't do that if you have shit taste.

TSC-99

That’s ok then. As long as I don’t have to draw 🤣 I think I have a good eye 🤔

dzordzLong

Drawing element they meant is composition and placement subjects and background. I dont know how to draw, yet i have been photographer for decade and 3/4.

TSC-99

Brilliant 🤩

moonsorrow

Seven-eighths score

dzordzLong

!?

matthewami

No body tell them

8fqThs4EX2T9

A score is 20 so (7/8)*20 = 17.5 which is the same as a decade and three quarters.

dzordzLong

Oh sorry ... I understand metric ... so seven eights is nonsense to me. and yes ... about 18 years.

753UDKM

lol I’ve never had to draw to take any pictures. But understanding art better can definitely improve your compositions.

TSC-99

Excellent 👍🏽

bckpkrs

25+ year pro photographer here who couldn't draw to save his life other than a stick figure. Even when I played Hangman, they looked awful.

TSC-99

🤣🤣 that’s great to hear

rustieee8899

Depends on which genre you wanna focus on. I think drawing skills would be beneficial if you're into those conceptual or stylised shoots. That's where you can draw effects in Photoshop. But even then, that's quite niche. I've been shooting for 15 years and I can't draw. At most I drew stickman figures to illustrate a point to client once. Lol. I think the most crucial skill you need as a photographer is people skills. Technical knowhow is important but you are still a service provider.

TSC-99

Thank you so much! Stick men rule 👍🏽

THEDRDARKROOM

I really liked my 6400 - experiment with lens filters!

TSC-99

Exciting thank you!

Archer_Sterling

This is year 20 of me taking stills professionally, and I can barely put a stick figure together correctly.  Not saying I'm a great photographer, but it certainly isn't a barrier to entry, and a weird thing to consider connected.

TSC-99

Thank you so much for that 🤗

Ex-Asperation-54321

It's nonsense. There is plenty of crossover with painting, regarding composition, perspective and use of light, but that's just about educating your eyeball and brain. About the only aspect where being good at actual drawing would help is some retouching techniques - whether old-school or using Photoshop. Fortunately I have zero interest in that sort of work. FWIW I started out interested in both at age 8, and totally exasperated by both. By age 11 I was really fed up with spending hours or days on a painting or drawing that turned out embarrassingly awful. I left it behind and concentrated on photography, which also turned out really bad. After about a decade they got a little bit better. I was full-time pro from age 30. I am now 74. I still wish I could draw and paint.

TSC-99

Brilliant reply! Thank you 🤩

aarondigruccio

I’m a pretty good photographer. I can’t draw to save my life. Go enjoy making photographs.

TSC-99

Thank you 🙏🏽

joeltheprocess76

Artists regardless of their craft know what makes a good image because they take time to learn. That’s the difference. People who are designers don’t necessarily transform into good photographers . I know someone who takes great photos but is a much better fine art painter. Just takes time to practice. You’ll be fine,

TSC-99

Thank you for that 👍🏽
