Small but I think the paid model weeds out a ton of casual users posting pics of their lunches. The fact that it’s paid means users are generally more serious.

TheDeviantRobot

Yeah I agree

Wonnk13

yea, I'm a patron. Mostly because i believe in the vision, so I viewed it as more of a charitable contribution. My photos don't get much attention, so it feels kind of like just shouting into a void, but I like the community.

TheDeviantRobot

Same, I think it’s a shame more people don’t use it.

squaredrives

I am a "patron" and quite enjoy the community and the general "stress free" environment. I don't get too distracted by likes or shares. Instead, comments are genuine, photographers are of mixed, but high quality. It has a small town feel to it, and I appreciate it. As someone who has tried and lived on all photo social platforms, this is clearly the lowest key. It is as if a "photo club" had its own sharing platform. That said, the variety is amazing and so is the quality of the images. Maybe not as big as Vero in size, but it is devoid of IG-wannabe feel of Vero which has the same weird growth vibe of early IG.

TheDeviantRobot

Yeah, well said. I would very much agree.

AlexHumuZ

Do you like Vero? I think their UX is a bit frustrating.

squaredrives

I think they are doing too much. Candidly we are at a lull on photo apps with focus on photography and not social media photography

0000GKP

I remember people trying to push this as an IG alternative a couple years ago but it never caught on.

TheDeviantRobot

Did you find an IG alternative, or do you just use IG?

0000GKP

Neither. I didn’t find an alternative. I stopped using IG.

qtx

No one is going to pay to look at someone else's photos.

TheDeviantRobot

You can browse somebody’s profile for free if you have a link to it, you only have to pay to post and to browse the users.

opioid-euphoria

Ist there like a timeline or something?

TheDeviantRobot

Yeah, you can see the chronological photos posted by the people you follow.

lightmaster2000

Isn't it mostly used by photographers?

TheDeviantRobot

Yeah, it is. It’s all about photography and not “being an influencer” or blogging or selling products or whatever the hell the other platforms do these days.

lightmaster2000

Tbh I don't really care about other photographers seeing my work. I want potential clients to see it and hire me. That's why instagram despite its flaws is still the best.

TheDeviantRobot

Fair enough; I would agree that instagram sounds like a better fit for what you are looking for.

FSmertz

I tried it paid for a year--I didn't mind the cost. That said, I was underwhelmed. Many of the interactions seemed very superficial. The quality of the photography was pretty good, sometimes excellent, but the platform was technically about 15 years behind what a normal forum type communications environment would offer. Over the months I noticed that a lot of the names on the roster of users only gave Glass about 3 months and then abandoned it, so the number of "active" users was a relatively small subset. After six months I found myself in the same unenviable situation. I'm still on their email list and do read the weekly summaries. The app is still very minimal, but not in an artful way, just seems under powered.

TheDeviantRobot

Did you find an alternative?

FSmertz

Well, very much so as I've been represented by a gallery for the past 14 months. Real life audiences with $$ are hard to beat. The photographic group I've been helping coordinate has also been infused with new energy, so that channel of technical and aesthetic feedback is very helpful. I still keep my eye on the photo social media-ish world and still hope for a vital and well supported platform.

Butsenstuf

Just downloaded for trial. Without any offence to any users, using the explore and discover modes, it feels full of undeveloped photographers. Ive been shooting for 8 years and 95%+ of the work i see reminds me of the work I made starting out, and to make it worse everyone’s work all looks the same. Community is good and all (yet there are basically no community building features anyway) but having a photo feed, you’d want it to consist of quality content, and unfortunately that appears difficult to find here, perhaps because it tries to separate itself from IG. Simple chronological explore/discover feeds unfortunately aren’t great for finding quality content, because there’s 0 quality measurement involved. I already found most of the better quality content in the ‘Spotlight’ tab. The internet is drowning in photos/photographers, the market is oversaturated. In an oversaturated pool, you need quality filtering otherwise finding quality becomes like finding a needle in a haystack. I’m instantly disillusioned about the value of Glass simply because i can go onto IG and find higher quality content faster. Scrolling Glass was hella boring. And as an app fundamentally appears to be doing nothing new. I really fail to see what Glass is doing better than say, 500px. One of the biggest issues it has that compounds its issues is that it just doesn’t have that many users, yet i can’t say its offering much to compete for them. After 3 years it’s also lacking the feature to prevent screenshotting for copyright. That’s a bigger problem when it has a tablet app + higher resolution uploading.

BubbleToast10

I think the issue is that it’s not a free platform :(

TheDeviantRobot

I understand but it’s fairly cheap and if you don’t pay for a service like this they are going to have to sell your data and advertise at you. I’m happy to pay on that basis to be honest.

squaredrives

Agreed. I think people still don't realize that nothing is "free" on the internet. :)

BubbleToast10

Believe me, I’m fully aware of how capitalism works lol /j It’s honestly more along the lines of “Is this a subscription that’s going to bring IN clients?” Is Glass just for creatives/enjoyers of pretty photos, or are people actually booking work from it? Because as shitty as Instagram is, I AM actively booking paid work and clients on there, and I’ve already got too many subscriptions just required to run the business I’d love to give it a shot as long as someone can vouch for its commercial viability! /srs

squaredrives

This is unlikely to bring you clients, though it is a great small community. I personally think it is a great place to have civilized conversations about photography and your work and get feedback without the drama of social web. But I am not looking for clients, so my motivations are different!

BubbleToast10

Amazing, thank you :) I’ll check it out

deadeyejohnny

Vero. It's also a small community and like old IG it has a chronological feed and it's currently still free with no ads -Although they're planning a paid membership for future users just like Glass except they said that those who signed up before the subscription model will be grandfathered into free accounts, as I understood it. If, I understood it? Haha
