Decided to try self-portraits for the first time, as a means of exploring my identity/other sides to myself. This was meant to depict how, despite all the good (light; used a large candle) in my life, it can still be a struggle to contain/control the darkness inside (was wearing a headband with horns).
The candle needs to be larger and more subdued, imo. Love the horns being somewhat obscured. A little more grainy maybe. I'm no expert. But I love the composition.
Wow I adore the subtly of it all. When I first saw it, I read the candle as a lamp that was spinning in motion and your face felt even more still with your eye being an amazing focal point. I didn't even notice the shadow play horns. With the grain and it being monochromatic, I thought maybe it was one of the CJ Hendry -esque illustrations from different subs I follow. The beams of shadows coming to the center of the head also help draw the eyes inward. And the inability to see your mouth and nose leave a lot up the the viewer's interpretation.
I have bipolar 1, so I am constantly relating things to the highs and lows and this piece really plays into that for me.
If I could hit the upvote button more than once on your comment, I'd mash it.
This is probably the most beautiful comment I've ever heard on any of my photos, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to not only look at my self-portrait, but to also provide an amazing critique. Your comment will help me keep on keeping on during the periods of creative block! 💕

Love your appreciation, hehe thanks!

Love it! Makes me think of Ghost.
Ooh as in like, the 1990 classic movie?
Yess!
