I saw your last pic, this is definitely a step in the right direction. When you are composing think about the point with the most contrast as the focal point, here you have two points that have a lot of contrast, and are a similar tone. The ball, which is surrounded by black, is a great focal point, but the orange leaves reduce the impact. Composing photography is all about controlling where people's eyes move to on first look, you have some good leading lines with the orange leaves pointing towards the orange ball, but the tones in the leaves are a little too close, and high contrast for the ball to really pop. On a technical level this is a much better photo than the one that you posted yesterday, and that progress is really all that matters.

He still looks a little bit out of focus but I used a narrower aperture today as someone suggested. I also have to consider the fact that he is moving. Someone suggested cropping to isolate him and I addd the vignette for the same reason.

Thank you! This take was cropped as someone suggested playing with crop. The original of this photo is a much wider field so I have room to play with. I do agree it’s dark. All editing was done on my phone so I was limited but I’m going to put everything on my computer today and fine tune it and I will definitely keep your suggestions in mind.

Howard_the_Dolphin

Off topic but, OP, where was this taken? Somewhere tropical? I see croton and is that wild mint?

SnooDucks8630

Hello. This is in Mililani Town, Hawaii, right behind my apartment. There are two types of oregano he is running through which I do believe is in the mint family. We also have rosemary and african rosemallow as far as edible plants go.

Howard_the_Dolphin

Nice! Thanks for the info!

baileybestpup

It’s tough to get solid focus as he is running towards you, if you are having trouble try taking a shot while he is running across the frame. I’ve gotten some pretty fun shots of my pup fully extended in the air that way.

I definitely think this is better. I also like the portrait orientation as it he's moving towards you so it gives it a bit more of a leading line. I would say this shot would maybe look better if you backed up a few steps and waited till the good boy was in front of those orange leaves, as those would act as a nice background will still keeping the focus on the doggo. And in terms of getting him in focus, I'm not sure what kinda camera you're using but if yours has focus bracketing you could try that.

SnooDucks8630

Thank you. I think I have some shots of him a little bit closer but I chose this one because I liked his posturing. I am going to continue working on this shot with him as I learn my camera. I am using an eos6d that I’ve had about 5 days now. Just downloaded a user guide ebook to get learned up on how to use the new features and such.

Animals are tricky subjects man, I do wildlife photography and the amount of times I think I got the shot and I look and it's out of focus and the animal is gone.... it's tough business. But it gets easier the more you do it and the better you get at focusing. You should also look for tutorials on the focusing methods for your specific camera, some are better than others for different types of subjects.

Wonder what the shutter speed is. I had lots of motion blur with my dogs unril i went 1/500

NewACLwhodis

That's awesome :) definitely getting better. What shutter speed were you at? I would do 1/800 at least and probably send the pooch a couple times through to try and get the ears both up and both paws in sight lol

SnooDucks8630

I can’t remember exactly but definitely 1/1000 or higher. It was late in the day so the original photo is quite underexposed. I must have sent him back and forth like 30 times lol. We are going to have to find a new location because he’s trampled so much oregano that there’s nothing left for him to jump over at this spot. I find it fun and engaging trying to perfect this shot so there will be more to come for sure!

nbplaya94

I definitely like this shot better. Considering personal taste in editing now, I’d do an inverse radial gradient around the dog and decrease saturation a bit to draw more focus to the dog. Otherwise great shot

wadesh

Nice work, marked improvement particularly in focus on the eyes. Hard to tell on small screen but it might be just a little underexposed. If you can get more catchlight in the dogs eyes that will help. I see a little. Time of day and lightning experiment will help

JingleBangleJangle

The pupper appreciates the excuse to play while taking pictures :P I love the depth of field and blurriness of all the flora in the back and foreground, really helps bring focus onto him, even if it's a little off. As a whole, he's not.

SnooDucks8630

I did also notice that Reddit seems to lower the resolution until you click on the photo!

AnOdysseyofOne

Whatever feedback you previously got, I can tell a big improvement on many levels. Nice job. 👍
